About 300,000 used and refurbished lab instruments - worth almost $1 billion - were sold all over the world in 2009 as start-ups and biotech firms furnish their laboratories with these cheaply-obtained instruments. As pharmaceutical companies enforce lab closures and layoffs, the supply of used lab instruments grow. How instrumentation companies respond to this trend is discussed.
