Abstract

The objective of the present study was to analyze the morphometric and meristic variations of an estuarine fish, Etroplus suratensis, in five locations along the South Indian coastal region. In total, 651 individuals were collected and 16 morphometric and six meristic counts were taken. The results of univariate (ANOVA) and multivariate (Principal Component Analysis, PCA) analyses showed that the east coast stocks (Machilipatnam, Mudasalodai, Rajakkamangalam) have overlapping morphological characteristics, whereas the west coast stock (Cochin) was distinctly different, but there were no significant differences observed in meristic characters among the five stocks. Therefore, it was presumed that Machilipatnam, Mudasalodai, and Rajakkamangalam were the same stock. The morphometric data discriminated E. suratensis into two stocks, i.e., those of the east and west coasts. However, further molecular-based analysis is very much needed to validate these stocks.

22. Population genetic structure of Etroplus suratensisBloch, 1790 in South India: preliminary evidence of founder haplotypes shared among populations

Abstract

Indian estuarine and coastal water habitats have reduced in recent decades because of anthropogenic activities such as coastal development. The pearlspot cichlid Etroplus suratensisis designated as Least Concern, given its wide distribution and presumably large overall population size in South India, despite the declining trend observed in wild populations. To assess the genetic diversity and connectivity among South Indian coastal populations, mitochondrial displacement loop sequence analysis was conducted to provide fundamental information for future conservation studies and an understanding of population dynamics by calculating the haplotype diversity of local populations. The haplotype (h) and nucleotide (π) diversity were very low at most localities, with values ranging from 0.56061 to 0.87879 and from 0.0014 to 0.0046, respectively, which may have resulted from recent population bottlenecks or founder events. The results also revealed a clear genetic differentiation between East and West coast populations, suggesting the existence of a gene flow barrier between them. As the maintenance of genetic connectivity is a prerequisite for local population stability, the preservation of extant habitats and the restoration of water bodies along the coast of India may be the most effective measures for the sustainable maintenance of this species.

36. Genetic Fitness and Bottleneck of Threadfin (Sea Catfish), Arius arius(Hamilton, 1822) in South Indian Coastline

Abstract

To resolve the taxonomy and assess the population structure of threadfin (sea catfish), Arius ariusin south Indian coastal regions this study was designed using morphometric and molecular markers. The analyses found homogeneity among the populations, which was characterized by high gene flow and no isolation by distance. Genetic continuity was consistently observed between east and west coasts of Indian populations, which were confirmed by different estimates of genetic structure. Further more, the observed low nucleotide diversity with high haplotype diversity could be the attribute of genetic bottleneck with rapid population expansion of this species in recent years. The present study underlies the importance of understanding the biological significance of genetic differentiation to establish management strategies for the exploited A. ariuspopulations.

Abstract

Neogastropoda, highly diversed group of predatory marine snails, often been confused by shell colour and design pattern for identification. Gastropod resources which became economically important in India during the last decade are the whelk. The species Babylonia zeylanica of the family Babyloniidae began to be fished and exported from the country to China, Singapore, Thailand and Europe. This paper reports the molecular study of the group published to date with eight families of neogastropod taxa. For this study the 18S rRNA gene of B. zeylanica and other published data were collected from the GenBank. Kimura-2-Parameter genetic distance, nucleotide composition and neighbour joining analyses were conducted in all the eight families. The result clearly shows that Babyloniidae is clustered closely with Columbellidae of super family of Buccinoidea. Further additional gene data and increased sampling is warranted to give new insights into the phylogenetic relationships of Neogastropoda. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
