Atelier Biodiversité en Océanie, Nouméa, NCL, 24-/06/2019 - 25/06/2019; En quoi la biodiversité de l’Océanie est-elle si singulière et donc si remarquable ? Avec quel niveau de gravité est-elle affectée par la crise mondiale de biodiversité et par les conséquences délétères des différentes activités humaines ? Quelles relations entretiennent les peuples océaniens avec la nature et en quoi les savoirs traditionnels complètent les connaissances scientifiques ? Telles sont les principales questions qui ont animé les débats de cet atelier qui a abordé les écosystèmes marins ainsi que les écosystèmes terrestres et d’eaux douces. Plus de cinquante experts ont dressé un diagnostic de l’état de la biodiversité et des différentes pressions qu’elle subit et ont proposé des solutions et des recommandations spécifiques.

Abstract

Workshop Biodiversity en Oceania, Nouméa, NCL, 24-/06/2019 - 25/06/2019; Why is Oceania's biodiversity so unique and therefore so remarkable? How severely is it affected by the global biodiversity crisis and the deleterious consequences of various human activities? What is the relationships between the peoples of Oceania and nature and how can traditional knowledge complement scientific knowledge? These were the main questions that guided the discussions in this workshop, focused on marine ecosystems , on the one hand, and terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, on the other. More than fifty experts diagnosed the current state of biodiversity and the various pressures it faces in order to propose specific solutions and recommendations.

22. Insulin secretion and action in North Indian women during pregnancy

Abstract

AIM: The relative roles(s) of impaired insulin secretion vs. insulin resistance in the development of gestational diabetes mellitus depend upon multiple risk factors and diagnostic criteria. Here, we explored their relative contribution to gestational diabetes as defined by the WHO 1999 (GDM1999) and adapted WHO 2013 (GDM2013) criteria, excluding the 1-h glucose value, in a high-risk Indian population from Punjab.METHODS: Insulin secretion (HOMA2-B) and insulin action (HOMA2-IR) were assessed in 4665 Indian women with or without gestational diabetes defined by the GDM1999 or adapted GDM2013 criteria.RESULTS: Gestational diabetes defined using both criteria was associated with decreased insulin secretion compared with pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance. Women with gestational diabetes defined by the adapted GDM2013, but not GDM1999 criteria, were more insulin resistant than pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance, and furthermore displayed lower insulin secretion than GDM1999 women. Urban habitat, illiteracy, high age and low BMI were independently associated with reduced insulin secretion, whereas Sikh religion, increasing age and BMI, as well as a family history of diabetes were independently associated with increased insulin resistance.CONCLUSIONS: Gestational diabetes risk factors influence insulin secretion and action in North Indian women in a differential manner. Gestational diabetes classified using the adapted GDM2013 compared with GDM1999 criteria is associated with more severe impairments of insulin secretion and action.

Abstract

The first public product of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is its Conceptual Framework. This conceptual and analytical tool, presented here in detail, will underpin all IPBES functions and provide structure and comparability to the syntheses that IPBES will produce at different spatial scales, on different themes, and in different regions. Salient innovative aspects of the IPBES Conceptual Framework are its transparent and participatory construction process and its explicit consideration of diverse scientific disciplines, stakeholders, and knowledge systems, including indigenous and local knowledge. Because the focus on co-construction of integrative knowledge is shared by an increasing number of initiatives worldwide, this framework should be useful beyond IPBES, for the wider research and knowledge-policy communities working on the links between nature and people, such as natural, social and engineering scientists, policy-makers at different levels, and decision-makers in different sectors of society

Abstract

Nasoata Island is a predominantly mangrove island located near the outflow and delta of the Rewa River, Fiji’s largest and longest river. The river originates on the eastern slopes of Mt. Tomaniivi in the Central Highlands of Viti Levu. The island has been selected as an integral coastal site for Fiji’s PABITRA Gateway Transect. Information is provided on: (1) the reasons it was selected as a PABITRA site; (2) geographical, geological, climatic, and edaphic setting; (3) the vegetation; and (4) brief notes on the fauna, with particular focus on the avifauna. Because of its rich flora and fauna, Nasoata Island is an excellent ‘‘prototype’’ coastal and mangrove site for enhancing our understanding of the complexities of island biodiversity, both within Fiji and in relation to other small off shore islands within the broader PABITRA network.

Abstract

The areas of focus of the Santa Barbara and Riverside groups in conducting water demand studies are the central and southern California regional test sites, respectively. Within each test site, sub-areas have been selected for use in the making of detailed investigations. Within each of these sub-areas an in-depth evaluation is being made as to the capability of remote sensing systems to provide pertinent data relative to water demand phenomena. These more limited sub-areas are: (1) Kern County and the San Joaquin Basin; (2) Chino-Riverside Basin; and (3) the Imperial Valley. Rational for the selection of these subareas included the following: Much of the previous remote sensing research had been conducted in these areas and therefore a great deal of remote sensing imagery and pertinent ground truth for the areas was already available.

Abstract

The results of research are reported on the information content in simulated space photographs derivable as a function of various levels of image resolution. Whenever certain resource features could not be consistently identified on simulated low-resolution imagery, attempts were made to define the required level of image resolution that would allow a skilled interpreter to discriminate one feature from another. The results of this research, conducted within a chaparral-hardwood-grassland environment in California, indicate that simulated ERTS data contain sufficient information to allow an interpreter to discriminate between woody vegetation, grassland, and water bodies. However, if more detailed information is desired, the imagery must have a ground resolution of at least 50 ft, showing shape, size, texture, and shadow characteristics within each vegetation type. Spaceborne data, therefore, often will have to be supplemented by higher resolution aircraft imagery, depending on the types of resource information being sought.

Abstract

The information content of simulated space photos as a function of various levels of image resolution was determined by identifying major vegetation-terrain types in a series of images purposely degraded optically to different levels of ground resolution resolvable distance. Comparison of cumulative interpretation results with actual ground truth data indicates that although there is definite decrease in interpretability as ground resolvable distance increases, some valuable information is gained by using even the poorest aerial photography. Developed is the importance of shape and texture for correct identification of broadleaf or coniferous vegetation types and the relative unimportance of shape and texture for the recognition of grassland, water bodies, and nonvegetated areas. Imagery must have a ground resolvable distance of at least 50 feet to correctly discriminate between primary types of woody vegetation.
