Copper based wood preservatives are among the most important wood preservatives for heavy-duty applications. Wood treated with copper-based preservatives performs excellently if applied according to preservative specifications. If used improperly, premature failures can appear. In order to elucidate the properties of copper treated wood in use, utility poles and posts treated with copper-based preservatives were investigated. Poles were cut into smaller specimens, and copper and chromium penetration, retention, mechanical properties, extractive content, short-term water uptake and fungicidal properties were then determined. The results clearly showed that wood retains its properties if treated with sufficient amounts of copper-based wood preservatives. Insufficient amounts of preservatives applied result in premature failures of wood commodities. Regardless of the type of wood preservative used, the central part of spruce wood poles and piles is the weakest point, where the majority of the failures occurs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sweet chestnut ( Castanea sativa ) heartwood is one of the most durable European commercial wood species. Various aspects that could potentially influence the durability were studied in the present research: presence of extractives, ring width and weathering. The properties of wood that had been in outdoor use for 35 years were also examined. The results indicate that ring width and weathering (outdoor use) did not influence the durability. None of the fungi used were able to degrade sweet chestnut heartwood in a modified EN 113 experiment. After extraction with methanol or water, specimens lost between 11% and 15% of total mass by leaching of extractives. However, extraction only slightly decreased the durability of the leached wood. This indicates that other components (in addition to water and methanol soluble extractives) could be responsible for durability. Furthermore, analysis of 35-year-old wood showed that not all relevant properties of the old sweet chestnut wood deteriorated within the mentioned time frame. Copper-based compounds are some of the most important biocides for the protection of wood in heavy duty applications. In the past, copper was combined with chromium compounds to reduce copper leaching, but a recent generation of copper-based preservatives uses ethanolamine as a fixative. To elucidate the leaching of copper biocides from wood, Norway spruce (Picea abies) wood was treated with a commercial copper-ethanolamine solution with two different copper concentrations (cCu = 0.125% and 0.25%). The aim of this research was to compare the laboratory leaching standards (ENV 1250-2, CEN/TS 15119-1, and CEN/TS 15119-2) with the field leaching studies in ground and above ground. The results indicated that the first leaching peak appears in the initial phases of leaching, both in laboratory and field studies. The degree of copper leaching is also affected by the method of treatment; copperethanolamine preservative solutions, when applied with superficial treatments, are more prone to leaching than is vacuum-pressure treated wood. Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the mechanical and fungicidal properties of three different wood species (English oak (Quercus sp.), common beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Norway spruce (Picea abies)) that had been in indoor use for several decades, compared to control specimens of freshly cut timber. The collected material was cut into smaller samples prior to further analysis. Extractive content, mechanical, fungicidal and sorption properties were determined according to standard procedures. The obtained results showed that the mechanical properties of oak wood do not deteriorate over the investigated time frame. On the other hand, the resistance of oak wood against fungi decreases over time. The reason for this is yet to be confirmed; it may be due to degradation of secondary metabolites. Similar results have been reported for spruce wood. There were no statistically significant differences in the mechanical properties of old and new spruce wood. In contrast to oak wood, there were also no significant differences in fungicidal properties, bearing in mind that spruce wood has lower durability than oak wood. Aging of beech wood resulted in a considerable decrease in the tested mechanical properties but showed no significant differences in fungicidal properties. Old beech wood specimens were moderately deteriorated by insects and fungi, which was the reason for the loss of bending and compressive strength. Our results confirm that most of the relevant properties do not deteriorate with time and that wood can be reused for a variety of other applications even after decades in service. Copper-ethanolamine-based wood preservatives are still the most important solutions for protecting wood in ground applications in Europe. Wood in the ground is exposed to a variety of organisms that can act synergistically. In order to simulate these conditions in the laboratory, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) specimens impregnated with copper- ethanolamine preservative of three different concentrations (cCu = 0.125%, 0.25%, and 0.5%) were exposed to three different soils according to procedure ENV 807, for periods between 12 and 32 weeks. After the relevant period of exposure, samples were isolated, and their mass loss, bending strength, and modulus of elasticity were determined. In the final step, the remaining copper in the samples was determined. The results showed that, in spite of significant copper leaching, the tested copper-ethanolamine-treated wood exhibited good performance in ground applications. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of bacteria Escherichia coli ATCC 35218, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and yeast Pichia membranifaciens ZIM 2417 to adhere to wooden surfaces such as poplar (Populus sp.), Norway spruce (Picea abies), European beech (Fagus sylvatica), beech coated with the commercial Belinka oil food contact and disinfectant P3-oxonia active 150, and investigate their survival on the beech wood surface under different relative humidities (RH; 65%, 75%, 85%, 98%) and temperatures (10 °C, 20 °C, 27 °C/37 °C). To extend the research goals, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was also performed. The adhesion was determined by the number of colony-forming units per mm2 of sample (CFU/mm2). Results showed that all tested bacteria and yeast were able to adhere to the wooden surfaces, although differences were observed according to strains and type of wood. It was evident that number of adhered cells of S. aureus was lower on spruce (3.62 × 103 CFU/mm2) compared to poplar and beech (1.09 × 105 and 2.11 × 104 CFU/mm2, respectively). Furthermore, oil and disinfectant promoted the adhesion of P. aeruginosa (155.93 and 130.50%, respectively) on the beech surfaces, while they had a strong inhibitory effect on the other tested microorganisms E. coli (87.44 and 88.44%, respectively), S. aureus (91.24 and 96.80%, respectively) and P. membranifaciens (92.45 and 87.24%, respectively). These findings are consistent with SEM micrographs. The current data also indicated that relative humidity and temperature significantly affected the adhesion of tested bacteria and yeast. The highest degree of adhesion was observed at a relative humidity of 98% and temperature of 20 and 37 °C for bacteria, or 20 and 27 °C for yeast. Thus, the knowledge of how these microorganisms adhere to wooden surfaces and which factors affect this phenomenon proves to be of great importance in order to avoid their colonization. Microclimatic conditions (relative humidity and temperature) were monitored in a shipment of Norway spruce (Picea abies) wood inside an intermodal container on its 66-day transport from Slovenia to Japan. In parallel, the susceptibility of Norway spruce wood to moulding fungi was determined and a dynamic vapour sorption analysis was performed. Considerable moulding developed on specimens that were exposed to a climate with relative humidity above 93%. The results of the laboratory assessment correlated with the observations of mould development in the container. Wood is one of the most important construction materials and its use in building applications has further expanded in recent decades. In order to enable even more extensive and reliable use of wood in outdoor applications, factors affecting wood’s service life need to be understood. It is well known that fungal degradation of wood is predominantly affected by temperature (T) and moisture content (MC). In order to elucidate the influence of these two factors, long term monitoring of T, relative humidity (RH) and MC at four locations was carried out: a model house made of thermally modified wood in Mozirje (1), the WWII partisan hospital Franja (2), a hayrack in Pokljuka (3) and a house in the north of Slovenia in Vrba (4). The results clearly showed that fungal degradation of wood is influenced by MC and T. In addition, the influence of micro-climatic conditions on fungal decay was shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite increased interest in the timing and dynamics of phloem formation, seasonal changes in the structure of phloem sieve elements remain largely unexplored. To understand better the dynamics of phloem formation and the functioning of sieve tubes in the youngest phloem in Fagus sylvatica L. we investigated repeatedly taken phloem samples during the growing season of 2017 by means of light microscopy, and transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Phloem formation started with the expansion of the overwintered early phloem sieve tubes adjacent to the cambium and concurrent cambial cell production. The highest phloem growth rate was observed in general 1 week after the onset of cambial cell production, whereas the transition from early to late phloem occurred at the end of May. Cambial cell production ceased at the end of July. The final width of the phloem increment was 184 ± 10 μm, with an early phloem proportion of 59%. Collapse of older phloem tissue is a progressive process, which continuously occurred during the sampling period. Collapse of early phloem sieve tubes started shortly after the cessation of cambial cell production. Prior to the onset of radial growth, late phloem from the previous year represented 80% of the total non-collapsed part; during the growth period, this percentage decreased to 20%. Differences were observed in both sieve tube ultrastructure and sieve plate geometry between the youngest and older phloem. However, sieve plates were never completely occluded by callose, suggesting that processes affecting the functionality of sieve tubes may differ in the case of regular collapse or injury. The youngest parts of the phloem increment from the previous year (i.e. previous late phloem) continue functioning for some time in the current growing season, but the two-step development of overwintered phloem cells also ensures a sufficient translocation pathway for photosynthates to the actively growing tissues. Relevant properties of stone pine ( Pinus pinea ) wood have been only fragmentarily addressed in the past, which has been recognized as a limiting factor for its potential applications. The sorption properties, permeability to water, extractives content and durability against fungi of Pinus pinea sapwood and heartwood were therefore determined in the present research. A SEM analysis was also performed. The Meyer-Veltrup model for material resistance was used to test relevant data. The results showed that sapwood of P. pinea fits into durability class 5 (very susceptible wood), while heartwood meets the requirements of durability class 2 (durable wood), if the mass loss after fungal exposure is considered as the sole criteria for classification. Heartwood contains up to 15% of lipophilic compounds, contributing to its hydrophobicity and influencing its sorption properties. In contrast, sapwood is very permeable and hence takes up a lot of water, while heartwood, with a higher resin content, exhibits better water performance. The higher durability of stone pine heartwood against wood decaying fungi can be linked to the presence of phenolic extractives and hydrophobic properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal modification is the most important commercial modification procedure. Thermally modified (TM) wood has improved durability, but its performance does not meet expectations predominately under moist conditions. To reduce water uptake of TM wood, Norway spruce specimens were treated with suspensions of a natural wax by dipping impregnation (DipI) or by vacuum-pressure impregnation (VPI). Wax-treated specimens were subsequently TM at 185, 200, 215, and 230°C. Control specimens were heated up to 100°C only. Contact angle (CA), short-term and long-term water uptake, bending strength, and performance against wood decay fungi of the resulting material were determined. The results show that a combination of wax treatment and thermal modification have a synergistic effect that considerably improves hydrophobicity, reduces liquid water uptake, slows down water vapor uptake, and improves the resistance against fungal decay of the treated material.
