Mammary tumors in female dogs are the most frequent and corresponds to half of the canine tumors. The objectives of this study were to determine the risk factors associated with the occurrence of mammary tumors in female dogs and to evaluate the macroscopic characteristics of these neoformations, using 386 dogs from the “Outubro Rosa Pets” events done within the cities of Uberlândia and Patos de Minas, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in 2015 (n=194), 2016 (n=105) and 2017 (n=87). For the determination of risk factors, the binary logistic regression test (P5cm). At least 15.4% (14/91) of the dogs had one of the regional lymph nodes increased. In conclusion, the occurrence of mammary tumors in the evaluated population was 23.6% and that age, overweight and non-realization of ovariohysterectomy are risk factors associated with the development of mammary tumors.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos do tipo de parto (eutócico vs. distócico) e do período do ano (chuvoso vs. seco) sobre a prevalência de retenção de placenta (RP) e de endometrite subclínica (ES), verificar a relação entre as duas patologias, e os efeitos dessas sobre a taxa de descarte, o período de serviço (PS) e número de IA/concepção. A RP foi avaliada no primeiro dia pós-parto (DPP). A citologia endometrial foi realizada entre 30 e 80 DPP, considerando positivos casos contendo acima de 5% de neutrófilos. Os dados foram analisados por regressão logística e análise de variância no programa Minitab (P0,05). Conclui-se que a retenção de placenta tende a ser um fator de risco para endometrite subclínica, distocia predispõe à retenção de placenta e partos ocorridos no período chuvoso aumentam os casos de endometrite subclínica. Há um impacto negativo na eficiência reprodutiva de vacas leiteiras mestiças acometidas por retenção de placenta.

Cancer is the main cause of death among pet animals. FeLV, the feline leukemia virus, increases the odds of domestic felines’ developing lymphoma or leukemia 62 fold. The cardiac lymphoma is a rare neoplasia and little is known about it in Veterinary Medicine. Therefore, it has been sought to report a case of cardiac lymphoma in a two-year-old, FeLV-positive feline patient, who presented dyspnea, lack of appetite, progressive loss of weight, and apathy. By means of supplementary examination, the presence of a mass attached to the heat would be verified, and lymphoma was diagnosed upon histopathological examination. It is thus concluded that this neoplasia was associated to the feline leukemia virus and that, in spite of the supplementary examinations’ having been utterly important for a correct diagnosis, the lack of an early definition aggravated the clinical picture of the patient and hindered the implementation of specific treatment. O câncer é a principal causa de morte nos animais de companhia. O FeLV, vírus da leucemia felina, aumenta em 62 vezes a chance de felinos domésticos infectados desenvolverem linfoma ou leucemia. O linfoma cardíaco é uma neoplasia rara, e na Medicina Veterinária pouco se sabe sobre ele. Portanto, objetivou-se relatar um caso de linfoma cardíaco em um paciente felino de dois anos de idade e soropositivo para FeLV, que apresentava dispneia, inapetência, emagrecimento progressivo e apatia. Através dos exames complementares foi verificada a presença de uma massa aderida ao coração, diagnosticando-se linfoma a partir do histopatológico. Conclui-se então, que esta neoplasia foi associada ao vírus da leucemia felina e que, apesar dos exames complementares terem sido extremamente importantes para um correto diagnóstico, a sua não definição precoce agravou o quadro clínico do paciente e dificultou a implantação de um tratamento específico.

This study investigated the occurrence of canine distemper virus (CDV) by evaluating the presence of viral RNA within urine samples of dogs from Uberlândia, MG, with clinical manifestations suggestive of infection by CDV by targeting the CDV N gene. Of the clinical samples collected ( n =33), CDV viruria was detected in 45.5%. Five dogs died spontaneously; all had characteristic CDV-associated histopathological alterations and demonstrated CDV viruria. Statistical analyses revealed that the age, gender, breed, or the organ system of the dog affected had no influence on the occurrence of canine distemper. Myoclonus and motor incoordination were the most significant neurological manifestations observed. A direct association was observed between keratoconjunctivitis and dogs with CDV viruria. These findings suggest that CDV viruria in symptomatic dogs might not be age related, and that symptomatic dogs can demonstrate clinical manifestations attributed to CDV without viruria identified by RT-PCR. Additionally, the results of the sequence identities analysed have suggested that all Brazilian wild-type strains of CDV currently identified are closely related and probably originated from the same lineage of CDV. Nevertheless, phylogenetic analyses suggest that there are different clusters of wild-type strains of CDV circulating within urban canine populations in Brazil. RESUMO A presença do ácido nucleico (RNA) do vírus da cinomose canina (CDV) foi avaliada por meio da amplificação parcial do gene N pela técnica RT-PCR realizada em urina de cães provenientes de Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, que apresentavam sinais clínicos sugestivos de cinomose. Das 33 amostras de urina avaliadas, o CDV foi identificado em 45,5%. Em cinco cães que morreram espontaneamente, além da excreção do CDV na urina, foram observadas alterações histopatológicas associadas à infecção por esse vírus. Análises estatísticas demonstraram que a idade, gênero, raça e o sistema orgânico comprometido dos cães avaliados não exerceram influência no diagnóstico da cinomose canina. CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior A oncologia veterinária se destaca como uma especialidade crescente na atualidade. Dessa forma, os objetivos desta tese foram relacionados à implantação do Serviço de Clínica e Cirurgia Oncológica - SECCON do Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (HV-UFU), de acordo com as normas para manipulação de agentes antineoplásicos determinadas pela Agência de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA). Para a execução do projeto, decidiuse por adaptar uma área já existente no local de 29 m², a qual foi dividida em cinco salas distintas: A- ambulatório; B- sala de administração de quimioterapia antineoplásica; C- sala de higienização; D- sala de paramentação e E- sala de manipulação de drogas citotóxicas. Além disso, padronizou-se a abordagem do paciente no SECCON por meio da criação de ficha clínica específica para o atendimento de pacientes oncológicos. O SECCON foi o primeiro Serviço de Oncologia Veterinária no estado de Minas Gerais, bem como foi pioneiro nas Universidades brasileiras que seguiram as orientações técnicas de funcionamento dos serviços de terapia antineoplásica recomendadas pela ANVISA, o que permite concluir que as adequações de um serviço de oncologia veterinária às normas legislativas brasileiras para a manipulação de drogas antineoplásicas são factíveis. Concomitantemente ao planejamento e execução do SECCON, estudo paralelo foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar os fatores de risco para neoplasia mamária em cadelas recrutadas em três eventos consecutivos do “Outubro Rosa Pets”, nos municípios de Uberlândia e Patos de Minas, nos anos de 2015, 2016 e 2017. Para tal delineou-se um estudo retrospectivo transversal, com o levantamento e análise das fichas clínicas de atendimento preenchidas durante as edições do evento de prevenção do câncer de mamas em cadelas. Os resultados obtidos reforçam que a idade avançada, obesidade e a não realização da ovariohisterectomia são fatores relacionados a presença de tumores de mama e que, portanto, quando presentes, podem estar associados ao risco ao desenvolvimento desta importante neoplasia. As a medical and surgical specialty Veterinary Oncology is growing and stands out nowadays. Taking this into account, the present thesis aimed described the process of design and implementation of Clinical and Oncological Surgery Service - SECCON at Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia (HV-UFU), according to the standards for manipulation of antineoplastic agents determined by the Brazilian Agency of Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA). An already existing area of 29 m² was subdivided into five distinct rooms: A - clinical ambulatory; B - antineoplastic chemotherapy administration room; C - cleaning room; D - paramentation room and E - cytotoxic drug manipulation room. In addition, the patient's approach to SECCON was standardized through the creation of a specific clinical record for patients with cancer. SECCON was the first Veterinary Oncology Service in the state of Minas Gerais, as well as a pioneer Oncology Service that followed the technical guidelines of ANVISA's recommended antineoplastic therapy services in a Brazilian University, which allows to conclude that the adequacy of an oncology service legislation for the manipulation of antineoplastic drugs are feasible. Simultaneously with the design and execution of SECCON, a parallel study was conducted with the objective of evaluating risk factors for breast cancer in dogs that were recruited at three consecutive events called "Outubro Rosa Pets", which ones occurred in Uberlândia and Patos de Minas, in 2015, 2016 and 2017. A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted by analysis of the clinical records filled out during the event of the prevention of breast cancer in bitches. The obtained results reinforce that advanced age, overweight and the failure to perform ovariohysterectomy are considered risk factors related to the presence of breast cancer in bitches and may be associated with the risk to the development of this important neoplasia in dogs. This study evaluated the prevalence of cervicitisÂand endometritisÂand their interrelationsÂin crossbred dairyÂcowsÂthat were more than 60Âdays inÂmilk (DIM), and the efficiency of the cytology techniqueÂ(cytobrush)ÂandÂhistology as diagnosticÂmethodsÂfor these diseases. The reproductive tracts (n=149) derived from cows were collected from a slaughterhouse and grossly evaluated to determine uterine involution and the phase of the estrous cycle. Subsequently, cervical and uterine cytological evaluations were done to characterize the inflammatory response as cervicitis (with a neutrophilic count greater than 5%) or endometritis (with more than 6% neutrophils). Additionally, randomly obtained samples from the cervix and uterus were collected for histological evaluation. Cytological evaluation revealed that the frequency of cervicitis was 6% (9/149), and endometritis was diagnosed in 8.1% (12/149) of the samples; both inflammatory reactions were diagnosed 2.1% (3/149) in three of these. Histological evaluation revealed that of the cows diagnosed with cervicitis by cytology, 66.6% (6/9) had no inflammatory reaction in the cervical mucosa, and 33.3% (3/9) had mild inflammation in this region. Histological evaluation of the uterine horn revealed that of the 12 cows diagnosed with endometritis by cytology, 50% (6/12) of these had a histological diagnosis of mild and moderate inflammatory responses, 8.3% (1/12) of these demonstrated a severe inflammatory response, while no inflammatory reaction was identified in 41.7% (5/12) of the endometrial biopsies evaluated. In conclusion, the endometrial and cervical inflammatory response diagnosed by the cytobrush technique persisted in 12.1% of the cows. Comparatively, the frequency of the inflammatory responses at the cervix and uterus was reduced by histological analysis relative to cytological evaluation with the cytobrush technique. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a prevalência de cervicite e endometrite citológicas e suas inter-relações em vacas leiteiras mestiças com mais de 60 dias pós-parto (DPP), bem como avaliar as técnicas de citologia (cytobrush) e histologia como métodos diagnósticos para estas doenças. Foram utilizados 149 tratos reprodutivos de vacas com mais de 60 DPP de abatedouro e avaliados macroscopicamente para determinar a involução uterina e a fase do ciclo estral. Posteriormente, realizou-se citologia cervical e uterina para o diagnóstico de inflamação utilizando como ponto de corte, contagem de polimorfonucleares (PMN) superior a 5% e 6%, respectivamente, para cervicite e endometrite citológica. Também foram coletadas amostras de cérvix e útero para histologia. Do total de vacas, identificaram-se 6% (9/149) com cervicite e 8,1% (12/149) com endometrite citológica, sendo três destes animais (2,1%) com ambas asinflamações. Histologicamente, dos animais com cervicite citológica, 66,6% (6/9) não apresentaram infiltrado inflamatório na mucosa cervical e 33,3% (3/9) apresentaram inflamação leve. A histologia uterina mostrou que de 12 vacas com endometrite citológica, 50% (6/12) apresentaram infiltrados inflamatórios leves a moderados, 8,3% (1/12) grave e 41,7% (5/12) não tinham Inflamação endometrial. Concluiu-se que a inflamação endometrial e cervical, por meio da técnica de citologia, persistiu em 12,1% das vacas com mais de 60 DPP. Quando se utiliza a histologia como método de diagnóstico, a detecção de inflamação cervical e uterina é inferior ao detectado pela técnica de citologia por meio do esfregaço endometrial (cytobrush).

Resumo O hemangioma e o hemangiossarcoma são neoplasias mesenquimais originárias do endotélio vascular e o cão é o animal doméstico mais frequentemente acometido. Os registros do Laboratório de Patologia Animal do Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia de 2002 a 2014 foram revisados. Os dados epidemiológicos e a frequência de cães com diagnóstico de hemangioma e hemangiossarcoma foram verificados e estatisticamente comparados. Foram identificados 64 casos de hemangioma e 128 casos de hemangiossarcoma. Para os hemangiomas, não houve diferença na frequência de acordo com sexo e raça. Quanto à localização, os hemangiomas não viscerais foram os mais frequentes em relação aos viscerais. As cadelas e animais adultos e idosos foram frequentemente acometidos por hemangiossarcoma, assim como a raça Pitbull. Os hemangiossarcomas apresentaram predominantemente tamanho médio e localização cutânea, ou seja, não visceral. Abstract The hemangioma and hemangiosarcoma are mesenchymal neoplasms from the vascular endothelium, and the dog is the domestic animal more commonly affected. At the veterinary hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia, we reviewed the files from the Animal Pathology Laboratory from 2002 to 2014. The epidemiological data and the frequency of dogs diagnosed with hemangioma and hemangiosarcoma were verified, correlated, and statistically tested. 64 cases of hemangioma and 128 cases of hemangiosarcoma were identified. For hemangiomas, there was no difference in frequency regarding sex and breed. The cutaneous hemangiomas were more frequent than visceral hemangiomas. Female dogs and adult animals were often affected by hemangiosarcoma, as well as the Pitbull breed. The hemangiosarcomas had been predominantly cutaneous and medium size tumour was the most frequent for this neoplasm.

Diseases of the reproductive system are common in both sexes in the most varied of species. In female dog, these diseases produce different degrees of morbidity and mortality and are influenced by environmental conditions, reproductive history, and previous drug treatments. Reproductive disease may have different consequences, ranging from the absence of clinical signs to the impairment of fertility. The objective of this study was to determine the causes of reproductive diseases in female dogs admitted to the Veterinary Hospital, Federal University of Uberlândia, during a six-year period (2012-2017) and to identify the most frequently occurring diseases. Information relative to the species, age, breed, and sex of 32,944 were obtained for animals. Of these, 16,480 were female dogs and 1,185 were diagnosed with alterations to the reproductive system. The animals were divided into four groups according to age (puppies, young adults, adults, and old) and disease of the reproductive system (Group 1 - vaginal and vulvar alterations; Group 2 - alterations to the estrous cycle, ovary, and uterus; Group 3 - alterations to the gestational period and parturition). The highest occurrence of diagnoses (47%) was recorded in young adult female dogs (1 to 5 years old). The most frequent alterations in female dogs were pyometra (48.8%), dystocia (13.6%), and transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) (12.6%). Crossbred dogs were the most affected with alterations to the reproductive system, representing 60% of all the female dogs diagnosed with any pathologic alteration. In conclusion, a 7.2% occurrence of reproductive disorders shows the relevance of these diseases in small animals and suggests that new methods are needed for the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of these disorders.

Com objetivo de estabelecer valores de referência para a citologia endometrial e avaliar histologicamente o endométrio de gatas clinicamente saudáveis e sem patologias uterinas, foram coletados 22 úteros de gatas que passaram por ovariohisterectomia eletiva. Após avaliação macroscópica dos úteros, coletou-se amostra para citologia endometrial pela técnica de escova endometrial (cytobrush) e fragmento para avaliação histológica. Quanto à apresentação das glândulas endometriais, 31,8% (7/22) das gatas apresentaram lâmina própria com poucas camadas de glândulas tubulares simples, revestidas por epitélio simples cúbico ou cilíndrico baixo, com diâmetro reduzido e sem secreção no seu lúmen. Proliferação glandular com algumas glândulas apresentando conteúdo no lúmen foi observada em 36,4% (8/22) dos animais. Presença de intensa proliferação glandular com glândulas revestidas por epitélio simples pavimentoso, a maioria com atividade secretora, foi observada em 31,8% (7/22) das gatas, sendo que em cinco destas verificou-se aparência cística com pronunciada dilatação glandular. A citologia endometrial, na leitura de 200 células, obteve os seguintes resultados: neutrófilos (10,77 ± 7,51), eosinófilos (1,93 ± 2,67), basófilos (0), linfócitos (6,58 ± 8,49), macrófagos (0,79 ± 2,05) e células de descamação (79,93 ± 11,44). Concluiu-se que em gatas clinicamente saudáveis há maior proporção de leucócitos na citologia endometrial quando comparado com outras espécies, mesmo quando não se evidencia inflamação na avaliação histológica. A colheita de material para citologia endometrial pela técnica de cytobrush apresenta celularidade satisfatória e sem presença de debris celulares em gatas.
