A control diet (CON) was formulated without inclusion of a fibre source. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-12-01 Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) The effect of extruded foods intake with different contents of starch, protein and hydroxyproline were evaluated on water balance, oxalate renal excretion, urine chemical composition and the relative urine supersaturation with calcium oxalate (RSSCaOx) in cats. Three complete and balanced diets were formulated with different proportions of starch, protein and hydroxyproline: STARCH, high starch and low protein and hydroxyproline content diet; SOY, high protein and low hydroxyproline and starch content diet; HYDROX, high hydroxyproline and protein, and low starch content diet. Twenty-four cats were used, with 8 replicate cats per diet. Animals were submitted to an adaptation period of 10 days, followed by 7 days for total feces and urine collection and 1 day for blood collection. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and means compared by Tukey's test (P < 0.05). Non-normal data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (P < 0.05). According to each treatment, cats had significantly different intake of starch, crude protein and hydroxyproline (P < 0.05). For diets higher in protein and lower in starch, coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), and gross energy (GE) were higher (P < 0.05). The daily urinary volume and water intake via drinking bowl (P < 0.001) were higher for cats fed with high protein foods (SOY and HYDROX) (P < 0.05). Renal excretion of Cl, S, uric acid and urea increased for animals receiving SOY and HYDROX diets compared with cats on the STARCH diet (P < 0.05), following the increase in intake of protein and these minerals. Although high protein consumption is generally associated with low urinary pH, on the present study cats fed the SOY diet produced urine with higher pH values than those fed the STARCH diet, although the former is higher in protein (P = 0.004). Oxalate urine concentration and RSSCaOx were higher (P < 0.001) and oxalate renal excretion tended to be higher (P = 0.109) for cats fed STARCH and HYDROX diets than those fed with the SOY food, suggesting higher hepatocyte production of oxalate after higher starch and hydroxyproline consumption by cats. In conclusion, although the limitation of the use of practical diets with differences on chemical composition, elevated starch intake with low protein consumption reduced urine production, and the high starch and hydroxyproline increased oxalate urine concentration and RSSCaOx. However, none of these diets induced the production of supersaturated urine with calcium oxalate, because all cats produced urine in the undersaturated zone. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Citrus pulp pellets (CPP) and orange fiber (OF) are coproducts of the citrus juice industry. OF is a novel fiber source that contains elevated amounts of soluble fiber and has not yet been studied in dog nutrition. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the inclusion of CPP and OF in dog foods and their effects on the extrusion parameters, the coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of nutrients, fermentation end products, and palatability. A control diet (CO) without an added fiber source tested was formulated, and the experimental diets were composed of 30 g/kg, 60 g/kg and 120 g/kg CPP or 60 g/kg OF inclusion (as-fed basis). Extrusion parameters were recorded to determine extruder energy balance and kibble macrostructure. Thirty beagle dogs (3.2 ± 0.7 years; 12.4 ± 1.5 kg body weight) were distributed in a randomized block design with 6 dogs per group to evaluate the CTTAD of nutrients and the fermentation products in feces. The results were analyzed by analysis of variance, and means were compared by polynomial and orthogonal contrasts. The inclusion of CPP and OF reduced motor amperage (P < 0.001), mass pressure (P = 0.002), and specific mechanical energy transference (P < 0.001). Kibble macrostructure was affected by a decrease in expansion and an increase in hardness by CPP and OF inclusions (P < 0.001). Starch gelatinization was reduced by CPP (P < 0.001) but not by OF inclusion (P > 0.05). Total dietary fiber (TDF) intake increased (P < 0.001) with the addition of CPP, with a linear reduction in CTTAD of nutrients and energy (P < 0.05). The OF treatment, however, presented similar CTTAD values of DM and CP to those of the CO diet (P > 0.05). The TDF CTTAD was higher for 60 g/kg OF than for 60 g/kg CPP (P = 0.028). The fecal pH decreased, and total short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), acetic acid, butyric acid, and lactate concentrations increased with CPP and OF inclusion (P < 0.05). However, the diet supplemented with OF induced the production of feces with a lower pH and higher total SCFA concentrations than those of feces produced from CPP inclusion (P < 0.001). The OF diet presented a higher preference (65%) than the CO diet (35%) by dogs (P < 0.05). The CPP and OF were fermentable fiber sources, increasing SCFA and butyric acid concentrations in feces. The OF was more fermentable than CPP, with a limited impact on kibble formation, starch cooking, and CTTAD of nutrients and showing good acceptance on diets by dogs. The present study compared the effects of diets formulated with fibers of different fermentability and protein sources of animal or vegetable origins on old and adult dogs. The experiment was organized in a 3 (diets) × 2 (ages) factorial arrangement, totaling 6 treatments. Thirty-six Beagle dogs were used (18 old dogs [10.2 ± 1.0 yr] and 18 young adult dogs [2.6 ± 0.9 yr]), with 6 dogs per treatment. Three diets with similar compositions were used: a nonfermentable insoluble fiber source (sugarcane fiber) and chicken byproduct meal (nonfermentable fiber [NFF] diet), a fermentable fiber source (beet pulp) and chicken byproduct meal (fermentable fiber [FF] diet), and soybean meal as a protein and fiber source (soybean meal [SM] diet). Data were evaluated using the MIXED procedure and considering the effects and interactions of block, animal, diets, and age. Means were compared using Tukey's test ( < 0.05). Age × diet interactions were evaluated when < 0.1. Old dogs had a reduced coefficient of total tract apparent digestibility of DM, which was explained by the age and diet interaction of CP and fat digestibility that was lower for old than for adult dogs fed the FF diet ( < 0.05). The SM diet obtained higher DM, OM, CP, and fiber digestibility compared with the NFF diet ( < 0.05). The feces of dogs fed the NFF diet had increased DM content ( < 0.05). The short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) did not change by age group and were higher for dogs fed the FF and SM diets compared with dogs fed the NFF diet ( < 0.05). An age and diet interaction was observed for lactate and was increased in the feces of old dogs compared with adult dogs fed the FF diet ( < 0.05). Fecal putrescine, cadaverine, and spermine were increased for old dogs compared with adult dogs ( < 0.05), and the spermidine fecal concentration was increased for dogs fed the SM diet regardless of age ( < 0.05). Old dogs had reduced peripheral T and B lymphocytes ( < 0.05). An age and diet interaction was observed for fecal IgA ( < 0.001). Adult dogs fed the SM diet had increased IgA in feces compared with animals fed the NFF and FF diets ( < 0.05). However, for old dogs, both the FF and SM diets induced increased IgA compared with the NFF diet ( < 0.05). In conclusion, beet pulp may reduce digestibility and induce increased lactate in the feces of old dogs. The protein and oligosaccharides of soybean meal are digestible by dogs, induce the production of SCFA and spermidine, and increase fecal IgA. Old dogs had increased putrecine, cadaverine, and spermine fecal concentrations.

Recently, new purified and soluble preparations have been developed in an attempt to increase their biological actions. Two YCW preparations, one conventional and another with higher solubility of the mannan oligosaccharide fraction, were evaluated on dogs. One food formulation was used, divided into the following treatments: CON–control, without yeast cell wall addition; YCW–addition of 0.3% of a conventional yeas cell wall extract; YCWs–addition of 0.3% of a yeast cell wall extract with high mannan oligosaccharide solubility. Twenty-four beagle dogs were used, eight per food, distributed on a block design. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-01-01 Previous studies have shown that beef cattle can be adapted for 14 days to high-energy diets; however, the effects of adaptation periods less than 14 days on feedlot performance have not been documented in the literature. In the present study, the effects of restricted intake of the final finishing diet as a means of dietary adaptation compared with diets increasing in concentrate content (step-up) over periods of 9 days and 14 days on feedlot performance, feeding behavior, blood gas profile rumen morphometrics, nutrients digestibility and carcass characteristics of Nellore cattle were evaluated. One-hundred twenty 24 month-old Nellore bulls (361 ± 30 kg) were randomly allocated in 24 pens and fed for 84 days in a completely randomized block design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments: adaptation using both 9-day and 14-day step-up protocol, and 9-day and 14-day restriction protocol. Each treatment was replicated 6 times. One bull per pen was slaughtered at the end of adaptation period for ruminal evaluations. Overall, no main effect of protocols or adaptation length was observed for any of feedlot performance or carcass traits variables evaluated, with the exception of gain to feed ratio (G:F). Bulls on restriction protocol had improved G:F (P = 0.04) when compared to cattle adapted by step-up protocol. Regarding rumenitis score, there was no main effect of protocols and adaptation length (P > 0.05). For rumen morphometrics, an interaction between the effect of adaptation length and period was observed (P = 0.02) for absorptive surface area (ASA), where at the end of the adaptation period, Nellore bulls adapted for 14 days presented larger ASA than the ones adapted for 9 days; however, at the end of the finishing period, ASA from animals adapted for 14 days was similar to the ones adapted for 9 days. Thus, Nellore yearling bulls should be adapted in 14 days regardless of the protocol adopted (step-up or restriction). It is believed that active fractions of mannoproteins (AFMs) obtained through extraction and fractionation of yeast cell walls (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) may beneficially modulate the immune system. However, studies that have evaluated this component and the effects of ageing on the immune system of dogs are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the immunological effects of AFMs in adult and elderly dogs. Three extruded iso-nutrient experimental diets were formulated: without addition of AFM (T0); with AFM at 400 mg/kg (T400); and with AFM at 800 mg/kg (T800). Thirty-six beagle dogs were used, and six experimental treatments, resulting in combinations of age (adult and elderly) and diet (T0, T400, and T800), were evaluated. On days zero, 14, and 28, blood samples were obtained for leucocyte phenotyping and phagocytosis assays. On days zero and 28, a lymphoproliferation test, quantification of reactive oxygen (H2O2) and nitrogen (NO) intermediate production, evaluation of faecal immunoglobulin A (IgA) content, and a delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity test (DCHT) were performed. Statistical analyses were performed with SAS software. Repeated measure variance analyses were performed, and means were compared by the Tukey test. Values of P ≤ 0.05 were considered significant, and values of P ≤ 0.10 were considered tendencies. Dogs fed T400 tended to have higher neutrophilic phagocytic activity than dogs fed T800 (P = 0.073). Regarding reactive oxygen intermediates, bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated neutrophils from animals that were fed T400 had a tendency to produce more H2O2 than those from animals fed the control diet (P = 0.093). Fibre has been studied to reduce the postprandial glucose response of dogs, but the results are inconsistent. Starch intake, however, was not properly considered in the published studies. The effects of starch and fibre intake on the postprandial glucose response were studied in non-obese adult dogs. Cellulose (CEL), carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), pea fibre (PE) and sugarcane fibre (SCF) were combined to form six diets with starch contents ranging from 33% to 42%: SCF+CEL and PE+CEL diets, both with high insoluble fibre (IF=22%) and low soluble fibre (SF=2.5%) content; SCF+CMC and PE+CMC diets with high SF (SF=4.5%; IF=19%) content; and CMC and CEL diets with low dietary fibre (14%) content. The diets were fed in two amounts, providing an intake of 9.5g or 12.5g of starch (kg0.75)-1 day-1, totaling 12 treatments. Each diet was fed to six dogs conditioned to consume all of the daily food in 10min. Their plasma glucose levels were measured before and during 480min after food intake. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-09-01 The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of specific thermal energy (STE) application at the extrusion preconditioning stage on the processing parameters, starch gelatinization, kibble macrostructure, nutrient digestibility, feces characteristics, and palatability of a dog food formulation. Two experiments were conducted, and both used the same dog food recipe. In the first experiment, six amounts of STE were applied by changing steam infusion in the preconditioner to obtain the following discharge mass temperatures: 45 °C, 55 °C, 65 °C, 75 °C, 85 °C, and 95 °C. After evaluating the processing and kibble characteristics, the diets were fed to 36 dogs (six dogs per diet), and nutrient digestibility was determined by total feces collection. Palatability comparisons were carried out with 36 dogs using the two-pan method. Results were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA), and means evaluated by polynomial contrasts according to the STE application (P < 0.05). In the second experiment, three treatments were produced. The extruder was operated with preconditioner mass temperature of 45 °C, and the amperage documented. On the sequence, the preconditioner mass temperature was increased to 95 °C, and the reduction on amperage was recorded. The extruder feed rate was them increased until a motor amperage equivalent to that of treatment 45 °C was observed but keeping constant preconditioner mass temperature at 95 °C. Processing and kibble characteristics were evaluated. Results were analyzed by ANOVA with means separated by Tukey's test (P < 0.05). In experiment one, a quadratic reduction of specific mechanical energy (SME) implementation with increasing STE was verified (P = 0.004), with a linear increase in total specific energy application to mass (P < 0.001). Regarding the relationship of starch gelatinization with increasing STE, a quadratic increase after preconditioning and a linear increase in kibbles after drying were verified (P < 0.001). Kibble expansion increased (bulk density, expansion rate, specific length), and hardness decreased with increasing STE (P < 0.001). Apparent nutrient digestibility and food palatability did not change according to STE application. Feces dry matter increased (P = 0.003), but pH and fermentation product content did not change. In experiment two, increasing STE was able to substantially elevate the mass production of the extrusion system while keeping the electric energy consumption constant. In conclusion, an increase in STE application decreased the SME required to process the food and increased the kibble expansion, starch gelatinization and in vitro digestibility of organic matter (OM), allowing a substantial increase in extruder productivity without increasing electric energy consumption, an important economic consideration for dog food production efficiency. Summary The effects of resistant starch (RS) intake on nutrient digestibility, microbial fermentation products, faecal IgA, faecal pH, and histological features of the intestinal mucosa of old dogs were evaluated. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo e três tratamentos, que foram: sem fonte adicional de lipídeo (CONTR); com fonte de lipídeo natural (torta de algodão) (GDESP); e com fonte de lipídeo protegido e rico em ácidos graxos poli-insaturados (GPROT). O estudo foi dividido em duas fases: pré-condicionamento e confinamento de 120 bovinos Nelore inteiros (24 baias, 5 animais por baia e 8 repetições por tratamento). O tratamento GDESP proporcionou maior ganho de peso na fase de pré-condicionamento, e, durante o período de confinamento, não houve diferenças entre os tratamentos quanto ao desempenho, às características de carcaça e ao acometimento de enfermidades. As concentrações plasmáticas de TNFα, IL-1β, haptoglobina e ceruloplasmina foram superiores no tratamento CONTR. The objective of this work was to evaluate the addition of natural and protected lipid sources on the performance and immune responses of Nelore cattle feedlot. A completely randomized design was carried out with repeated measures in time and three treatments, which were: without additional source of lipid (CONTR); with natural lipid source (cottonseed cake) (GDESP); and with rumen protected lipid source, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (GPROT). The study was divided into two phases: preconditioning and feedlot of 120 noncastrated Nelore cattle (24 pens, 5 animals per pen, and 8 pens per treatment). The GDESP treatment provided greater weight gain in the preconditioning phase, and, during the feedlot period, there were no differences among treatments for performance, carcass traits, and disease incidence. The highest plasma concentrations of TNF alpha, IL-1(beta), haptoglobin, and ceruloplasmin occurred in the CONTR treatment. Lipid supplementation to the diet, regardless of the source, improves the performance and enhances the immunological system of confined Nellore cattle. Soya bean protein concentrate (SPC) with two particle sizes were evaluated on extrusion parameters, kibble formation, digestibility and palatability of dog foods. Eight diets were extruded: PBM-control diet based on poultry by-product meal (PBM); GM-a diet in which corn gluten meal (GM) replaced 45% of the diet protein; cSPC15%, cSPC30% and cSPC45%-diets in which SPC of coarse particle size (600 μm) replaced 15%, 30% and 45% of the diet protein; and sSPC15%, sSPC30% and sSPC45%-diets in which SPC of small particle size (200 μm) replaced 15%, 30% and 45% of the diet protein. The digestibility of nutrients was evaluated for the PBM, GM, cSPC45% and sSPC45% diets, using six dogs per food. The PBM, GM and cSPC45% diets were compared for palatability. Data were submitted for analysis of variance, and the means were compared by polynomial contrasts or Tukey's test (p < .05). The cSPC increased the specific mechanical energy (SME) application, extrusion temperature and pressure linearly, resulting in lower kibble density and higher expansion and starch gelatinization (SG) (p < .01). When comparing the PBM, GM, cSPC45% and sSPC45% diets, higher SME, extrusion temperature and pressure, SG and kibble expansion were verified for the cSPC45% diet (p < .05). The DM, fat and crude protein digestibility were similar among diets. Faecal pH, ammonia and lactate did not differ, demonstrating that the removal of oligosaccharides and soluble non-starch polysaccharides of SPC produces an ingredient with mostly non-fermentable fibre. Dogs preferred the PBM to the GM diet (p < .05), but consumed the PBM and cSPC45% foods equally. In conclusion, SPC exhibited good extrusion functionality, favouring kibble expansion and SG, with high digestibility, similar to that of PBM. The removal of soluble compounds from soya beans resulted in an ingredient with low fermentable fibre content, which did not alter faecal formation or characteristics.

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of propolis use on hematological and serum bio- chemical parameters in Blue-fronted Amazons (Ama- zona aestiva). For this, 12 adult birds were distributed randomly into individual cages, divided into treatments with different propolis levels (A = 0.0%; B = 0.5%; and C = 1.0%), in 3 distinct phases (I, II, and III), with 15-d duration for phases I and III and 30 d for phase II, totaling 60 d. In phases I and III, all birds received treatment A ration, and in phase II received A, B, or C (4 birds per treatment). At the end of each phase, blood was collected for biochemical and hematological evaluations. The variables were analyzed by ANOVA (P < 0.05). Results suggest that 0.5% propolis reduced lactate dehydrogenase levels, whereas treatment B augmented hemoglobin concentrations and eosinophil count. It is concluded that 0.5% propolis improves lev- els of lactate dehydrogenase, hemoglobin, and eosino- phils.

The present study evaluated the effect of fiber type and particle size on extrusion processing parameters and kibble macrostructure of dog foods. In treatment 1, guava fiber was added to a control formula (CO) at different inclusion levels: 3% (GF3), 6% (GF6), and 12% (GF12). In treatment 2, two fiber types (sugarcane and wheat bran) and two fiber particle sizes were compared to a control (CO) product. Foods were manufactured using a single screw extruder. Hairball formation may induce vomiting and intestinal obstruction in predisposed cats. Some insoluble fibres as sugarcane fibre and cellulose can prevent hairball formation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of beet pulp consumption, a moderate soluble and fermentable fibre source, on faecal trichobezoars excretion in adult shorthaired cats fed kibble diets. Eighteen mixed-breed shorthaired cats and three extruded diets were used as follows: a basal diet without added fibre source (PB0-8.8% dietary fibre); BP8-8% inclusion of beet pulp (17.5% of dietary fibre); BP16-16% inclusion of beet pulp (23.8% of dietary fibre). The cats were fed during 31 days and faeces quantitatively collected during three periods of 3 days each (from days 3-5; 15-17; 26-28). Gastrointestinal transit time was determined in the last 3 days of study (from days 29-31). The trichobezoars were separated from faeces, collected, dried and washed in ether for complete removal of all faecal material. The results were submitted to repeated-measure analysis of variance and means evaluated by polynomial contrast (p 0.05). Beet pulp increased faecal production (p 0.001) and reduced gastrointestinal transit time (p = 0.003). No alterations were found on trichobezoar faecal excretion, both as considered in number per cat per day of mg per cat per day (p 0.05). Beet pulp intake did not reduce the number or the size of hairballs eliminated via faeces of shorthaired cats.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da adição de fontes de lipídeos naturais e protegidos da degradação ruminal na dieta de bovinos Nelore confinados sobre características da carne, concentrações de lipoproteínas sanguíneas e perfil de ácidos graxos da gordura do músculo Longissimus dorsi. Foram utilizados 120 bovinos Nelore, não castrados (366,9±28,7kg), com aproximadamente 24 meses. The effects of age on microbiota composition, gut fermentation end-product formation and peripheral lymphocyte numbers were compared between old and young adult Beagle dogs fed four kibble diets differing in yeast cell wall contents. The experiment had a double 4 × 4 Latin square design, one with four mature dogs (4 years old) and the other with four old dogs (10 years old), with four replicates (diets) per dog. In each period a 15 d adaptation period preceded a 5 d total collection of faeces for the digestibility trial. On day 21, fresh faecal samples were collected for the determination of bacterial enumeration, pH, biogenic amine and short-chain fatty acid. Flow cytometry was used for immunophenotypic evaluation. Dogs were fed four kibble diets with similar composition with 0, 0·15, 0·30 and 0·45 % of yeast cell wall (as-fed), respectively. Data were evaluated using general linear models of Statistical Analysis Systems statistical software (P Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, ClostridiumandEscherichia coli:P>0·15). Faecal concentrations of butyrate, histamine, agmatine and spermine were lower (P ≤ 0·05) and faecal pH was higher (P = 0·03) in older dogs than in mature adult dogs, suggesting an alteration in bacterial metabolic activity, or in the rate of intestinal absorption of these compounds. Concentrations of T-lymphocytes, T-cytotoxic lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes were also lower (P ≤ 0·01) in older dogs than in mature adult dogs. The study confirmed alterations in peripheral lymphocytes and revealed a reduced concentration of some fermentation end products in the colon of old dogs.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-06-01 In places characterized with high temperatures and rain occurrence in great intensity in the summer, but with dry winter, the major limitations for the sustainability of no tillage systems are low production of straw during fall-spring period and the fast decomposition during the rain season. To try to solve the problem, intercropped cultures of grains with forage species has presented reliable results; because offer vegetal covering to the next sowing, giving sustainability to the no tillage system. However, being a recent technology, its needed further studies in different areas involved for this system of production. Thus, this study had the objective 1) to evaluate the production of corn grain at different periods of intercropping with Brachiaria brizantha and Panicum maximum in no tillage system, and 2) aimed to evaluate the performance of forage at different periods of intercropping and the responses to nitrogen fertilization after the harvest of the corn, assessing mass productivity and quality. The experiment was carried out at the Lageado experimental farm, School of Agricultural Sciences, Botucatu campus belonged to São Paulo State University (UNESP) in structuralized Red Nitosol (Afisol). The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replications. The treatments were composed for four systems of no tillage involving corn: 1) single corn; 2) corn with Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu intercropped in the sowing; 3) corn with Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu intercropped with the fertilization of covering; 4) corn with Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça intercropped in the sowing and 5) corn with Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça intercropped with the fertilization of covering. After the harvest of the corn, it was applied, in equivalent quantities of nitrogen, ammonium nitrate in covering in doses of 0, 30, 60 and 120 kg ha-1, determining the forage mass productivity and quality. The simultaneous tillage of corn with P. maximum cv. Mombaça in the sowing compromises the grain productivity. When sowed in intercropping, B. brizantha presents a fiber concentration reduction and greater TDN concentration during the fall-spring period. Regarding benefits of intercropped cultures seeking to use in systems of production like agriculture-pasture integration, the best intercropping to be utilized is corn sown simultaneously with B. brizantha cv. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 2 x 2, com medidas repetidas no tempo, sendo os fatores a inclusão ou não de MON e PAP avaliados em dois períodos, em que 72 bovinos machos da raça Brangus, não castrados, foram alocados em 24 baias (três animais/baia), totalizando seis repetições por tratamento. Não foi observado efeito (P>0,05) da inclusão do PAP para nenhuma das varáveis de desempenho e características de carcaça. Contudo, foi observado efeito (P0,05) dos aditivos para o PAG e a CLS. Assim, a inclusão do PAP não foi boa alternativa à substituição da MON. Por outro lado, a inclusão do PAP não afetou negativamente os itens estudados. This study was designed to test the effects of polyclonal antibody preparation (PAP) against several rumen bacteria and/or monensin (MON) on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, fatty acid profile and blood lipoprotein concentrations in yearling bulls. Seventy-two Brangus yearling bulls were distributed in a completely randomized design with 2 x 2 factorial arrangements of treatments with six replications; factors were the inclusion or not of PAP or MON, measured over two phases. No significant (P>0.05) PAP main effects were observed for any of the feedlot performance and carcass trait variables. However, significant (P>0.05) MON main effects were observed, where animals receiving MON had higher (P0.05) main effects due to feed additives were observed for carcass fatty acid profile and blood lipoprotein concentrations. Therefore, the inclusion of PAP was not a good alternative to replace MON. On the other hand, feeding PAP did not negatively impact the items studied. The pollen spectrum of propolis is a good indicative of the phytogeographical origin of the bee product and the local flora available for bee visiting. The present study aimed to perform pollen analysis of propolis produced by Apis mellifera L., in the Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Propolis samples were directly obtained from beekeepers and slides were prepared for qualitative and quantitative analysis of pollen after propolis extraction. According to the results twenty-eight types of pollen were found and distributed in fifteen botanical families. Pollens from Mimosoideae and Myrtaceae types were found in all samples. In Sao Paulo State, there is a wide variety of vegetal sources which are components of the final propolis composition.
