We report a spectral-line survey of the extreme carbon star IRC+10216 carried out between 293.9 and 354.8 GHz with the Submillimeter Array. A total of 442 lines were detected, more than 200 for the first time; 149 are unassigned. Maps at an angular resolution of ~3" were obtained for each line. A substantial new population of narrow lines with an expansion velocity of ~4 km/s (i.e. ~ 30% of the terminal velocity) was detected. Most of these are attributed to rotational transitions within vibrationally excited states, emitted from energy levels above the v=0, J=0 ground state with excitation energy of 1000-3000 K. Emission from these lines appears to be centered on the star with an angular extent of <1". We use multiple transitions detected in several molecules to derive physical conditions in this inner envelope of IRC+10216., Comment: 90 pages, 13 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJSS

Using the Submillimeter Array we have detected the J=3-2 and 2-1 rotational transitions from within the first vibrationally excited state of CO toward the extreme carbon star IRC+10216 (CW Leo). The emission remains spatially unresolved with an angular resolution of ~2" and, given that the lines originate from energy levels that are ~3100 K above the ground state, almost certainly originates from a much smaller (~10^{14} cm) sized region close to the stellar photosphere. Thermal excitation of the lines requires a gas density of ~10^{9} cm^{-3}, about an order of magnitude higher than the expected gas density based previous infrared observations and models of the inner dust shell of IRC+10216., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

A spectral-line survey of IRC+10216 in the 345 GHz band has been undertaken with the Submillimeter Array. Although not yet completed, it has already yielded a fairly large sample of narrow molecular emission lines with line-widths indicating expansion velocities of ~4 km/s, less than 3 times the well-known value of the terminal expansion velocity (14.5 km/s) of the outer envelope. Five of these narrow lines have now been identified as rotational transitions in vibrationally excited states of previously detected molecules: the v=1, J=17--16 and J=19--18 lines of Si34S and 29SiS and the v=2, J=7--6 line of CS. Maps of these lines show that the emission is confined to a region within ~60 AU of the star, indicating that the narrow-line emission is probing the region of dust-formation where the stellar wind is still being accelerated., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

It is dedicated as before to the discovery and characterization of new astrophysical molecules. The four years (two of the original grant plus two years extension) have been extremely productive, yielding many new discoveries of astronomical interest at both radio and optical wavelengths, and the publication or submission of the 49 papers listed below. These articles have appeared or will soon appear in the leading refereed journals of astrophysics, chemical physics, physics, or molecular spectroscopy. One is a major invited review (#27) for Moleculur Physics. One of our other invited reviews published in Spectrochimica Acta in 2001 was recently awarded the Sir Harold Thompson Memorial Award, annually given to the best paper in that journal. Michael McCarthy has recently been awarded the Broida Prize.

It is dedicated as before to the discovery and characterization of new astrophysical molecules. This year, like the two before, has been extremely productive, yielding many new discoveries of astronomical interest at both radio and optical wavelengths, and the publication or submission of the 15 papers listed below. Nearly all of these articles have or will soon appear in the leading refereed journals of astrophysics, chemical physics, physics, or molecular spectroscopy. One is a major invited review for Molecular Physics. One of our other invited reviews published in Spectrochimica Acta in 2001 was recently awarded the Sir Harold Thompson Memorial Award, annually given to the best paper in that journal. During the past year significant advances have been made by our group in the laboratory study of exotic silicon and carbon molecules of astronomical interest. The most exciting discoveries include the pure silicon cluster Si3, several novel silicon hydrides, and the detection of phenyl radical, CsH5, a fundamental reactive organic ring. In addition, the rotational spectra of many carbon chains terminated with Si, N, O, and other heteroatoms have also been detected for the first time. The laboratory astrophysics of the whole set is complete in the sense that the entire radio spectrum of each species has now been measured or can be calculated to very high accuracy. Nearly all of these newly found molecules are plausible candidates for the detection by radio astronomers in the interstellar gas or in circumstellar sources because they are similar in structure and composition to known astronomical species, and because most are calculated to possess large permanent dipole moments.

This report details the work of NASA grant NAG5-9379 which is concerned with the discovery and characterization of new astrophysical molecules. Numerous papers have been or will be published on the laboratory detection of 21 molecules of astrophysical interest, nearly all not previously observed, and nearly all of astrophysical interest as plausible candidates for the interstellar gas and circumstellar shells. Also of interest include the laboratory detection of of optical molecular band exactly coinciding in frequency with the strongest and most widely studied optical diffuse interstellar band which remains an enigma in astrophysical spectroscopy. A new laser spectrometer has been developed and is now undergoing testing.

Great strides been made during the past three years in our laboratory investigation of molecules of astrophysical interest. Between 20 and 30 new molecules have been discovered each year of the grant with our ultrasensitive Fourier-transform microwave (FTM) spectrometer, bringing the total found during the last three years to 83. Six of these have already been discovered by us and colleagues in at least one astronomical source in the Galaxy, and a seventh, the molecular ion HC3NH+, has been detected by a Japanese group at Nobeyama Observatory. It is likely that most or many of the remaining 76 will be found with the powerful radio and far infrared telescopes now under construction or planned. The 32 papers published or submitted during the grant period are listed.

Over the course of this grant we used various spacecraft surveys of the Galaxy and M31 in conjunction with our extensive CO spectral line surveys to address central problems in galactic structure and the astrophysics of molecular clouds. These problems included the nature of the molecular ring and its relation to the spiral arms and central bar, the cosmic ray distribution, the origin of the diffuse X-ray background, the distribution and properties of x-ray sources and supernova remnants, and the Galactic stellar mass distribution. For many of these problems, the nearby spiral M31 provided an important complementary perspective. Our CO surveys of GMCs (Galactic Molecular Clouds) were crucial for interpreting Galactic continuum surveys from satellites such as GRO (Gamma Ray Observatory), ROSAT (Roentgen Satellite), IRAS (Infrared Astronomy Satellite), and COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite) because they provided the missing dimension of velocity or kinematic distance. GMCs are a well-defined and widespread population of objects whose velocities we could readily measure throughout the Galaxy. Through various emission and absorption mechanisms involving their gas, dust, or associated Population I objects, GMCs modulate the galactic emission in virtually every major wavelength band. Furthermore, the visibility. of GMCs at so many wavelengths provided various methods of resolving the kinematic distance ambiguity for these objects in the inner Galaxy. The past three years have been a period of great progress in our laboratory investigation of molecules of astrophysical interest-the most productive by far in the 20-year history of a research program which has led to the discovery of over 20% of the 123 known interstellar and circumstellar molecules. Most of the discoveries made during this period have been the result of the construction in late 1995 and early 1996 of a Fourier transform microwave spectrometer working in the centimeter-wave band. The sensitivity of this instrument from the moment that it was turned on has exceeded our expectations by an order of magnitude. The Table below shows the 46 new molecules which have been discovered. Most are carbon chains, the dominant type of molecule which has been found in space. Several comments with respect to these molecules should be made: 1. There are probably no mistakes in any of the identifications, since these have been confirmed by the standard, powerful assays and tests used to check spectroscopic identifications: isotopic substitution, quantum calculations of the expected molecular structures, detection of hyperfine structure, Zeeman effect, etc. 2. The radio laboratory astrophysics of the entire set is complete for the time being, in the sense that essentially all the astronomically interesting radio transitions (including hfs when present) are either directly measured or can now be calculated from the derived spectroscopic constants to better than 1 part per million (or 0.3 km s-1 in radial velocity, and often much better than that). 3. Six of the forty six new molecules have already been identified in space, in every case but one on the basis of our laboratory measurements. 4. Sensitive as they are, our laboratory techniques are far from fundamental limits on sensitivity, and 5. One of the principal motivations of our research is to close the fairly small mass and size gap, now only a factor of a few, between the smallest postulated interstellar grains and the largest identified interstellar molecules.

Over the past five years we have used our extensive CO surveys of the Galaxy and M31 in conjunction with spacecraft observations to address central problems in galactic structure and the astrophysics of molecular clouds. These problems included the nature of the molecular ring and its relation to the spiral arms and central bar, the cosmic ray distribution, the origin of the diffuse X-ray background, the distribution and properties of x-ray sources and supernova remnants, and the Galactic stellar mass distribution. For many of these problems, the nearby spiral M31 provided an important complementary perspective.

During the last six months of the period of performance, the diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Monoceros region was reanalyzed and one of the important conclusions was revised as a result. The reanalysis incorporated newly-available data from recent EGRET viewing periods and revealed a previously-uncataloged gamma-ray point source near the plane in Monoceros. The effect of incorporating this source in the diffuse emission model was significant, as its flux was comparable to that from a large interstellar cloud complex in the Perseus arm. In the updated model, a greatly reduced gamma-ray emissivity was found in the Perseus arm. This finding alters the previous conclusion that we had found evidence for an enhanced emissivity in the arm, which had supported the hypothesis that cosmic rays are coupled to the interstellar medium on the scale of spiral arms. Our updated findings are consistent with our previous results for the emissivity toward the Cepheus region (Digel et al. 1996), where a monotonic gradient of emissivity in the outer Galaxy was found. The updated analysis of Monoceros was presented at the June, 1998 meeting of the American Astronomical Society, and a journal publication should be ready for submission soon.

The past year has been a period of spectacular progress in our investigation of exotic molecules of astrophysical interest. During this period an entirely new spectrometer for the investigation of reactive molecules was finished: a Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer with a supersonic molecular beam. The instrument is operating almost flawlessly, and during the above period of less than two years has discovered the 23 new carbon chain and ring-chain molecules. Seventeen research papers, nearly all in leading refereed journals such as the Astrophysical Journal and the Journal of Chemical Physics have been published. At least five more papers are being prepared for publication. Already four of our new molecules have been detected in space with large radio telescopes. In many ways the most interesting of these is HC(11)N, which now ranks as the largest molecule definitely identified beyond the solar system. Nearly all the other new molecules are candidates for astronomical detection, and we will be disappointed if a number of them are not found as more sensitive receivers and larger telescopes are constructed. During the next year we expect this wave of discovery to continue, and to insure rapid progress we have designed an even more sensitive spectrometer which will operate at the temperature of liquid helium. The goal of this system is to enhance the sensitivity of Fourier-transform spectroscopy by a further factor of 20 to 50, achieving this by reducing the amplifier and thermal noise to levels routinely achieved in radio astronomy. This new instrument offers a number of technical challenges in cryogenic and microwave engineering, but none of these appears to be insurmountable, and our current schedule is to have the helium cooled system operating within the next six months. A number of investigations continued with our conventional free space spectrometer, which remains a powerful complement to our new FTM instrument.

The application of molecular radio astronomy to the study of the large-scale structure of the Galaxy is reviewed and the distribution and characteristic properties of the Galactic population of Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs), derived primarily from analysis of the Columbia CO survey, and their relation to tracers of Population 1 and major spiral features are described. The properties of the local molecular interstellar gas are summarized. The CO observing programs currently underway with the Center for Astrophysics 1.2 m radio telescope are described, with an emphasis on projects relevant to future comparison with high-energy gamma-ray observations. Several areas are discussed in which high-energy gamma-ray observations by the EGRET (Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope) experiment aboard the Gamma Ray Observatory will directly complement radio studies of the Milky Way, with the prospect of significant progress on fundamental issues related to the structure and content of the Galaxy.

Results are presented from a systematic search for CO emission from regions around 34 young open clusters in the outer Galaxy. The clusters have well-determined distances ranging from about 1 to 5 kpc and ages not greater than about 100 Myr. It was found that some moderately young clusters have no associated CO emission. All the surveyed clusters younger than about 5 Myr have associated with them at least one molecular cloud more massive than 10,000 solar mass, while the molecular clouds associated with clusters older than about 10 Myr are not more massive than a few thousands solar masses. It was also found that molecular clouds are receding from young clusters at a rate of about 10 km/sec, and that they seem to be destroyed by their interaction with the stars. Sites of ongoing star formation were identified in a number of clouds associated with young clusters.

Observations of CO and H I revealed that in Ursa Major the high-latitude far-infrared 'cirrus' emission discovered by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite comes from molecular and atomic clouds. These clouds differ sufficiently from the large clouds in the Galactic plane so that the ratio of H2 column density to velocity-integrated CO radiation temperature, N(H2)/W(CO), derived from Galactic plane surveys, may not apply to them. On the assumption of a constant gas-to-dust ratio, it is argued that the cirrus emission in Ursa Major is a good mass tracer, since both the atomic and the molecular gas are probably optically thin at visual wavelengths, and the grains are heated not by local sources but by the background field of Galactic starlight. The N(H2)/W(CO) ratio thus derived for those diffuse clouds, is significantly lower than the ratio applicable to Galactic plane surveys.
