This work explores the implementation of an adaptive strategy to design sparse ensembles of oceanic simulations suitable for constructing polynomial chaos surrogates. We use a recently developed pseudo-spectral algorithm that is based on a direct application of the Smolyak sparse grid formula and that allows the use of arbitrary admissible sparse grids. The adaptive algorithm is tested using an existing simulation database of the oceanic response to Hurricane Ivan in the Gulf of Mexico. The a priori tests demonstrate that sparse and adaptive pseudo-spectral constructions lead to substantial savings over isotropic sparse sampling in the present setting., United States. A broad partnership of institutions is collaborating in developing and demonstrating the performance and application of eddy-resolving, real-time global and basin-scale ocean prediction systems using the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). These systems are to be transitioned for operational use by the U.S. Navy at both the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO), Stennis Space Center, MS, and the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC), Monterey, CA, and by NOAA at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), Washington, D.C. The systems will run efficiently on a variety of massively parallel computers and will include sophisticated, but relatively inexpensive, data assimilation techniques for assimilation of satellite altimeter sea surface height (SSH) and sea surface temperature (SST) as well as in-situ temperature, salinity, and float displacement. The partnership represents a truly broad spectrum of the oceanographic community, bringing together academia, federal agencies, and industry/commercial entities, spanning modeling, data assimilation, data management and serving, observational capabilities, and application of HYCOM prediction system outputs. The institutions participating in this Partnership have long histories of supporting and carrying out a wide range of oceanographic and ocean prediction-related research and data management. All institutions are committed to validating an operational hybrid-coordinate ocean model that combines the strengths of the vertical coordinates used in the present generation of ocean models by placing them where they perform best., The original document contains color images.

This research seeks to develop a data-assimilating capability for HYCOM, the hybrid-coordinate version of the University of Miami's Isopycnic Coordinate Ocean Model. The objectives of the research are as follows: (1) to develop a methodology for assimilating temperature and salinity profiles from XBT, CTD, and ARGO float data that accommodates the peculiarities of HYCOM's hybrid vertical coordinates, allowing density to be corrected at fixed pressure levels where the coordinate is pressure-like, allowing interface pressures to be corrected when the coordinate is density-like, and allowing both to be corrected in the transition zone; (2) to estimate salinity profiles for XBT data so that density can be estimated for determining the nature of HYCOM's hybrid layers; (3) to compare the model state to observations and infer error statistics and influence functions; and (4) to give an evolving view of the ocean over the recent past. Temperature and salinity profiles will be used to estimate density profiles from which data for layer-interface pressures and layer potential-densities can be obtained. At first, error statistics, which govern the nature of the data-based corrections to the model state, are to be postulated so that assimilation codes can be made functional; later, they are to be based on model-data comparisons. The method is to be sufficiently flexible to allow for incorporation of other types of data, in particular those from satellite-based observations., A National Oceanographic Partnership Program Award.
