The reaction p(e,e'p)pi^0 has been studied at Q^2=0.2 (GeV/c)^2 in the region of W=1232 MeV. From measurements left and right of q, cross section asymmetries \rho_LT have been obtained in forward kinematics \rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=20deg) = (-11.68 +/- 2.36_stat +/- 2.36_sys)$ and backward kinematics \rho_LT(\theta_\pi^0=160deg) =(12.18 +/- 0.27_stat +/- 0.82_sys). Multipole ratios \Re(S_1+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 and \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 were determined in the framework of the MAID2003 model. The results are in agreement with older data. The unusally strong negative \Re(S_0+^* M_1+)/|M_1+|^2 required to bring also the result of Kalleicher et al. in accordance with the rest of the data is almost excluded.

Asymmetries in quasi-elastic 3 He ( e → , e ′ p ) have been measured at a momentum transfer of 0.67 (GeV/ c ) 2 and are compared to a calculation which takes into account relativistic kinematics in the final state and a relativistic one-body current operator. With an exact solution of the Faddeev equation for the 3 He -ground state and an approximate treatment of final state interactions in the continuum good agreement is found with the experimental data.

Large-area horizontal drift chambers have been built for use in a proton polarimeter. A gas mixture of 20% argon and 80% ethane is used. The left–right assignment is achieved by measuring the difference of the signals induced on neighboring potential wires. A spatial resolution of 300 μm is achieved.

Precise data on the neutron magnetic form factor G_{mn} have been obtained with measurements of the ratio of cross sections of D(e,e'n) and D(e,e'p) up to momentum transfers of Q^2 = 0.9 (GeV/c)^2. Data with typical uncertainties of 1.5% are presented. The recoil proton polarization has been measured in the $p(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}){\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ reaction in parallel kinematics around $W\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1232\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$, ${Q}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.121\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(\mathrm{GeV}/c{)}^{2}$, and $\ensuremath{\epsilon}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.718$ using the polarized cw electron beam of the Mainz Microtron. All three proton polarization components, ${P}_{x}/{P}_{e}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(\ensuremath{-}11.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.4)%$, ${P}_{y}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(\ensuremath{-}43.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.2)%$, and ${P}_{z}/{P}_{e}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(56.2\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.6)%$, could be measured simultaneously. The Coulomb quadrupole to magnetic dipole ratio, $\mathrm{CMR}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(\ensuremath{-}6.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.7}_{\mathrm{stat}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.8}_{\mathrm{syst}})%$, was determined from ${P}_{x}$ in the framework of the Mainz Unitary Isobar Model. The consistency among the reduced polarizations and the extraction of the ratio of longitudinal-to-transverse response is discussed.

Polarization transfer in the 4He ( e → ,e′ p → ) 3 H reaction at a Q2 of 0.4 (GeV/c)2 was measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The ratio of the transverse to the longitudinal polarization components of the ejected protons was compared with the same ratio for elastic ep scattering. The results are consistent with a recent fully relativistic calculation which includes a predicted medium modification of the proton form factor based on a quark–meson coupling model.

We have measured the neutron electric form factor ${G}_{\mathrm{en}}$ via ${}^{3}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{He}}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{e}{,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}n)\mathrm{pp}$ at ${Q}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.67(\mathrm{GeV}/c{)}^{2}$ using the 3-spectrometer facility of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron and a dedicated neutron detector. High pressure polarized ${}^{3}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{He}}$ gas was used as a target of polarized neutrons. ${G}_{\mathrm{en}}$ is determined from the ratio of the asymmetries ${A}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}{/A}_{\ensuremath{\parallel}}$ measured in quasifree kinematics with the target spin perpendicular and parallel to the momentum transfer. We find ${G}_{\mathrm{en}}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.052\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.011\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$.

Precision studies of the reaction [sup 3]He( e,thinspe[sup [prime]]p) using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI are presented. All data are for quasielastic kinematics at [vert bar][rvec q][vert bar]=685 MeV/c . Absolute cross sections were measured at three electron kinematics. For the measured missing momenta range from 10 to 165 MeV/c , no strength is observed for missing energies higher than 20thinspthinspMeV. Distorted momentum distributions were extracted for the two-body breakup and the continuum. The longitudinal and transverse nature of the cross sections is well described by a widely used prescription of the off-shell electron-nucleon cross section. We have measured the absolute unpolarized cross sections for photon electro-production off the proton ep → epγ with the Three-Spectrometer-Setup at MAMI at a momentum transfer q=600 MeV/c and a virtual photon polarization ɛ=0.62. The momentum q ′ of the outgoing real photon range from 33 to 111 MeV/c. We extracted two combinations of the recently introduced generalized polarizabilities [1,2].

The reaction 12C(e,e'Δ0)11C →12C(e,e'pπ−)11C was investigated at the Mainz Microtron MAMI in a triple coincidence measurement using the three spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration. The good missing mass resolution of σm= 0.27 MeV/c2 allowed to select the events belonging to the ground state of 11C. Cutting on these events the excitation energy spectra of 12CΔ0 show evidence for two peaks of about 4 MeV width (FWHM) at 282 MeV and 296 MeV with a significance of about 4.5 standard deviations. The peaks are interpreted in a simple weak coupling model as bound Δ0 states in 12CΔ0.

The neutron magnetic form factor Gmn has been determined via a measurement of the ratio of cross sections D(e,e′n) and D(e,e′p). The absolute detection efficiency of the neutron detector was measured with high accuracy using tagged neutrons produced from H(n,p)n elastic scattering by means of a high intensity neutron beam. The reaction $p({e,e}^{\ensuremath{'}}p){\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ has been studied very close to threshold $\ensuremath{\Delta}W\ensuremath{\le}4\mathrm{MeV}$ and at 4-momentum transfer ${Q}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.1(\mathrm{GeV}/c{)}^{2}$. The scattered electron and the kinematically focused recoil proton were detected in coincidence using the 3-magnetic spectrometer setup at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The transverse and longitudinal as well as the longitudinal-transverse and the transverse-transverse interference structure functions have been determined. From the data the $s$-wave multipoles ${E}_{0+}$ and ${L}_{0+}$ have been extracted. The experimental results are compared to recent calculations in chiral perturbation theory.

Two-proton correlations were studied in close to 4 π geometry using the reaction 12 C (e,e′pp) . The beam energy was 705 MeV, the energy transfer 225 MeV, and the three-momentum transfer 412 MeV/c. The electrons were observed in a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with protons observed in a BGO crystal ball. Missing energy and momentum, relative momentum and angular distributions were derived and compared with a factorized two-nucleon emission model. Soft-core correlation functions are favoured by the data.

A set-up of three high-resolution magnetic spectrometers, for simplicity named A, B and C, has been built as the central facility for the precise determination of double and triple coincidence cross sections of hadron knock-out and meson production through the scattering of electrons at the Mainz microtron MAMI. The spectrometers A and C with point-to-point optics in the dispersive plane and parallel-to-point optics in the non-dispersive plane have a solid angle of 28 msr and a momentum acceptance of 20 and 25%, respectively. They each consist of a quadrupole, a sextupole and two dipole magnets, reaching maximum momenta of 735 and 550 MeV/c, respectively. The spectrometer B has a solid angle of 5.6 msr and a somewhat reduced momentum acceptance of 15%, but it reaches a maximum momentum larger than that of the MAMI electron beam (855 MeV/c). It consists of a single-clamshell dipole magnet with point-to-point optics in both planes. Each spectrometer is equipped with a position-sensitive detector system consisting of four planes of vertical drift chambers, two planes of plastic scintillators and a threshold gas Cherenkov detector. The operational experiences demonstrate that all three spectrometers exceed the specifications. Selected results of double (e, e′ x ) and triple (e, e′ x 1 x 2 ) coincidence experiments, x 1 and x 2 standing for charged hadrons, are presented, which demonstrate the performance of the whole set-up.

The differential coincident pion electroproduction cross section in the 3 He(e,e π + ) 3 H reaction has been measured with high resolution with the three-spectrometer set-up at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) electron accelerator. Measurements were performed at the four incident energies E 0 = 855, 675, 600, and 555 MeV at fixed four-momentum transfer Q 2 = 0.045 GeV 2 , with the pions detected in parallel kinematics. This enables a separation of the measured cross section into the transverse and longitudinal structure functions by means of the Rosenbluth method. The experimental data are compared to model calculations, in which the elementary pion production amplitude includes the standard Born-amplitudes and also delta and higher resonance terms. Three-body Fadeev wave functions are used and the final state interaction of the outgoing pion is taken into account. The calculation describes the data only after medium modifications of the delta and of the pion are included.

The reactione+p →> e+π ++n at c.m. energyW=1125MeV and momentum transfer Q2=0.117GeV2/c2 has been measured. The transverse and longitudinal structure functions have been separated by varying the polarization of the virtual photon (Rosenbluth plot) with a 3 to 4% error. In addition the longitudinal-transverse interference term has been determined measuring the right-left asymmetry with an accuracy of 3%. The experimental data are compared to model calculations, and the sensitivity of the results to the axial and pion formfactors is discussed.

Forward-angle coincident electroproduction cross sections of charged pions from ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ have been measured at electron energies ${E}_{0}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}855$, 675, 600, and 555 MeV. The overall features of the data for energy transfers of $\ensuremath{\omega}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}370$ to 430 MeV with pions detected along the momentum transfer axis are reproduced in terms of a microscopic model, including pole terms, final state rescattering and produced and preformed $\ensuremath{\Delta}$ resonances. Separation of the cross section into its longitudinal and transverse parts was performed at ${Q}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.045\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(\mathrm{GeV}/c{)}^{2}$. The longitudinal part of the cross section in the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ channel does not contradict with the assumption of a preformed ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}$.

We have investigated that part of the proton momentum distribution of 16O that is linked through the (e, e′p) reaction to low-lying discrete states in 15N. The MAMI facility with its new generation of 100%-duty-cycle electron accelerator has allowed to cover in this experiment the previously not accessible momentum range of 265

A method for the separation of structure functions in (e, e′ p) experiments is proposed, which is an extension of the traditional Rosenbluth-type techniques of [1,2]. In our approach, we use a very flexible Ansatz to describe the structure functions within an extended kinematical regionG and determine its free parameters with a x2 minimization. The procedure is tested by pseudo data (12C(e, e′p)11Bg.s.) in the quasi-free region.

Cross sections for the ^3He(e,e′pn)^1H reaction were measured for the first time at energy transfers of 220 and 270 MeV for several momentum transfers ranging from 300 to 450 MeV/c. Cross sections are presented as a function of the momentum of the recoil proton and the momentum transfer. Continuum Faddeev calculations using the Argonne V18 and Bonn-B nucleon-nucleon potentials overestimate the measured cross sections by a factor 5 at low recoil proton momentum with the discrepancy becoming smaller at higher recoil proton momentum.

The interference response function f{sub LT}(R{sub LT}) of the {sup 2}H(e,e{sup '}p)n reaction has been determined at squared four-momentum transfer Q{sup 2}=0.33 (GeV/c){sup 2} and for missing momenta up to p{sub m}=0.29 GeV/c. The results have been compared to calculations that reproduce f{sub LT} quite well but overestimate the cross sections by 10-20% for missing momenta between 0.1 GeV/c and 0.2 GeV/c.

This paper reports on measurements of the 3He(e, epp) reaction measured at AmPS and the 3He(e, epn) reaction measured at MAMI. The measurements were performed in similar kinematics to allow a comparison to be made between the cross sections of the two reactions. Results are shown for both reactions together with a comparison for the 3He(e, e epp) data with continuum Faddeev calculations.

The differential cross sections \sigma_0=\sigma_T+\epsilon \sigma_L, \sigma_{LT}, and \sigma_{TT} of \pi^0 electroproduction from the proton were measured from threshold up to an additional center of mass energy of 40 MeV, at a value of the photon four-momentum transfer of Q^2= 0.05 GeV^2/c^2 and a center of mass angle of \theta=90^\circ. By an additional out-of-plane measurement with polarized electrons \sigma_{LT'} was determined. This showed for the first time the cusp effect above the \pi^+ threshold in the imaginary part of the s-wave. The predictions of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory are in disagreement with these data. On the other hand, the data are somewhat better predicted by the MAID phenomenological model and are in good agreement with the dynamical model DMT., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

This paper reports on the first measurement of the ^16O(e,e'pn)^14N reaction. Data were measured in kinematics centred on a super-parallel geometry at energy and momentum transfers of 215 MeV and 316 MeV/c. The experimental resolution was sufficient to distinguish groups of states in the residual nucleus but not good enough to separate individual states. The data show a strong dependence on missing momentum and this dependence appears to be different for two groups of states in the residual nucleus. The electric form factor of the neutron, G_En, has been measured at the Mainz Microtron by recoil polarimetry in the quasielastic D(e_pol,e'n_pol)p reaction. Three data points have been extracted at squared four-momentum transfers Q^2 = 0.3, 0.6 and 0.8 (GeV/c)^2. Corrections for nuclear binding effects have been applied., 9 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. New, high-precision measurements of the 3He(e,ep) reaction using the A1 Collaboration spectrometers at the Mainz microtron MAMI are presented. These were performed in antiparallel kinematics at energy transfers below the quasielastic peak, and at a central momentum transfer of 685 MeV/c. Cross sections and distorted momentum distributions were extracted and compared to theoretical predictions and existing data. The longitudinal and transverse behavior of the cross section was also studied. Sizable differences in the cross-section behavior from theoretical predictions based on the plane wave impulse approximation were observed in both the two- and three-body breakup channels. Full Faddeev-type calculations account for some of the observed excess cross-section, but significant differences remain. (Less)

We have measured the 4He(e,e'p)3H reaction at missing momenta of 130-300 MeV/c using the three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz microtron MAMI. Data were taken in perpendicular kinematics to allow us to determine the response function Rlt and the asymmetry term Atl. The charge form factor of the neutron has been determined from asymmetries measured in quasi--elastic pol.3He(pol e,e'n) at a momentum transfer of 0.67(GeV/c)^2. In a p((e) over right arrow, e' p)pi(0) out-of-plane coincidence experiment at the three-spectrometer setup of the Mainz Microtron MAMI, the beam-helicity asymmetry has been precisely measured around the energy of the Delta(1232) resonance and Q(2) = 0.2(GeV/c)(2). The results are in disagreement with three up-to-date model calculations. This is interpreted as a lack of understanding of the nonresonant background, which in dynamical models is related to the pion cloud.

In a p((--)e,e'p)pi(0) out-of-plane coincidence experiment at the three-spectrometer setup of the Mainz Microtron MAMI, the beam-helicity asymmetry has been precisely measured around the energy of the Delta(1232) resonance and Q(2) = 0.2(GeV/c)(2). New data are presented on the p(e,e'p)pi(0) reaction at threshold at a four-momentum transfer of Q(2) = 0.05 GeV(2)/c(2). The data were taken with the three-spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The complete center of mass solid angle was covered up to a center of mass energy of 4 MeV above threshold. Combined with measurements at three different values of the virtual photon polarization epsilon, the structure functions sigma(T), sigma(L), sigma(TT), and sigma(TL) are determined. The results are compared with calculations in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and with a phenomenological model. The measured cross section is significantly smaller than both predictions.

In a kinematically complete experiment at the Mainz microtron MAMI, pion angular distributions of the $^3$He(e,e'$\pi^+)^3$H reaction have been measured in the excitation region of the $\Delta$ resonance to determine the longitudinal ($L$), transverse ($T$), and the $LT$ interference part of the differential cross section. The data are described only after introducing self-energy modifications of the pion and $\Delta$-isobar propagators. Using Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) to extrapolate the pion self energy as inferred from the measurement on the mass shell, we deduce a reduction of the $\pi^+$ mass of $\Delta m_{\pi^+} = (-1.7^{+ 1.7}_{- 2.1})$ MeV/c$^2$ in the neutron-rich nuclear medium at a density of $\rho = (0.057^{+ 0.085}_{- 0.057})$ fm$^{-3}$. Absolute differential cross sections for the reaction (e+p -> e+p+gamma) have been measured at a four-momentum transfer with virtuality Q^2=0.33 GeV^2 and polarization \epsilon = 0.62 in the range 33.6 to 111.5 MeV/c for the momentum of the outgoing photon in the photon-proton center of mass frame. The experiment has been performed with the high resolution spectrometers at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. From the photon angular distributions, two structure functions which are a linear combination of the generalized polarizabilities have been determined for the first time., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) off the proton below pion threshold allows access to generalized polarizabilities of the proton. These observables measure the response of the nucleon to low energy electromagnetic field perturbations. This paper presents a comparison with Real Compton Scattering and also results for the first dedicated VCS experiment performed at the Mainz Microtron MAMI with high resolution spectrometers at Q2 = 0.33 GeV2.

We measured the absolute cross sections for photon electro-production off the proton, ep to ep gamma , with the high resolution spectrometers at MAMI at momentum transfer q=600 MeV/c and photon polarization epsilon =0.62. We covered the momentum range for the outgoing real photon q'=33/111 MeV/c. From the extracted virtual Compton scattering amplitude we deduce values for two structure functions related to the generalized polarizabilities of the proton.

Virtual Compton scattering, i.e. the exclusive reaction γ ∗ p → γ′p′ with γ ∗ denoting a virtual photon, provides new insights on the internal structure of the proton. Below π 0 production threshold, this experiment measures the generalized polarizabilities of the proton as defined by Guichon et al [1], [2] and Drechsel et al [3]. These new electromagnetic observables, functions of Q 2 , enlarge the concept of electric (α0 and magnetic (β) polarizabilities in Real Compton Scattering ( Q 2 =0) [4]. The first VCS experiment [5] of this kind was measured at the three spectrometer facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI for Q 2 =0.33 GeV 2 and we present in this paper the preliminary results.

The virtual Compton scattering (VCS) is the electron scattering on a proton which radiates a real photon before being detected. The new observables, called Generalized Polarizabilities (GP), extracted from this VCS at threshold can be understood as the deformation of the charge and current distributions of the proton [1]. These GP are functions of the mass of the virtual photon Q2. In real Compton scattering (Q2 = 0), some polarizabilities of the nucleon are already measured [2]. With the VCS, we will generalize these observables by measuring them at different values of Q2.

In the frame of the A1-Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron a test measurement of doubly polarized 3He(e,e′n) scattering from a high pressure target was performed in July aiming for the determination of the neutron electric form factor Gen at high momentum transfer (Q2=0.7(GeV/c)2). Due to the small value of Gen compared to Gmn a preferred procedure is to determine the asymmetry in the exclusive quasi elastic scattering of polarized electrons (P≈70%, I⩾2μA) from polarized 3He. The scattered electrons are detected in a high resolution magnetic spectrometer while the scattering angles of the outgoing neutrons are measured in a plastic scintillator. In this reaction the polarized 3He nucleus serves as an effective polarized neutron target. Because of the large magnetic field gradients caused by the spectrometer and limited space at the target place, the 3He gas is polarized elsewhere and transported to the target place in specially prepared glass cells. The glass cells are designed for high pressure (up to 10 bar) and with thin windows to prevent background. To reduce the relaxation due to the magnetic field gradients a μ-metal shielded guiding field of 4 Gauss is used. The guiding field is generated by three independent coils which permit the rotation of the target spin in any direction desired, especially perpendicular and parallel with respect to q. So we are able to take the ratio of the asymmetries A⊥/A∥, which in first order depends only on kinematical factors and the ratio Gen/Gmn. The method of metastable optical pumping is used to polarize the 3He at about 1 mbar with a LNA laser (≈6W). Subsequently the gas is compressed by means of a two-stage-piston compressor up to 6 bar with a polarization of roughly 45%.In the frame of the A1-Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron a test measurement of doubly polarized 3He(e,e′n) scattering from a high pressure target was performed in July aiming for the determination of the neutron electric form factor Gen at high momentum transfer (Q2=0.7(GeV/c)2). This paper reports on the first measurement of the 16O(e, e'pn)14N reaction. Data were measured in kinematics centred on a super-parallel geometry at energy and momentum transfers of 215MeV and 316MeV/c. The experimental resolution was sufficient to distinguish groups of states in the residual nucleus but not good enough to separate individual states. The data show a strong dependence on missing momentum and this dependence appears to be different for two groups of states in the residual nucleus. Theoretical calculations of the reaction using the Pavia code do not reproduce the shape or the magnitude of the data.
