Abstract: A new method to correct the emulsion deformation, mainly produced in the development process, is developed to recover the high accuracy of nuclear emulsion as a tracking device. The method is based on a precise photomask and a careful treatment of the emulsion films. A position measurement accuracy of 0.6 {\mu}m is obtained over an area of 5 cm x 7 cm. The method allows to measure positions of track segments with submicron accuracy in an ECC brick with as few as 10 reference tracks for alignment. Such a performance can be important for hybrid emulsion experiments at underground laboratories where only a small number of reference tracks for alignment are available., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies. An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of (6.5 +/- 7.4(stat.)((+8.3)(-8.0)sys.))ns was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light (v-c)/c =(2.7 +/-3.1(stat.)((+3.4)(-3.3)(sys.))x10^(-6). The above result, obtained by comparing the time distributions of neutrino interactions and of protons hitting the CNGS target in 10.5 microseconds long extractions, was confirmed by a test performed at the end of 2011 using a short bunch beam allowing to measure the neutrino time of flight at the single interaction level., Comment: 34 pages, 22 figures This version replaces all previous ones

Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the charge ratio dependence on the primary composition. The measured charge ratio values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy". A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: We have observed $23.2 \pm 6.0_{-0.9}^{+1.0}$ purely-leptonic decays of $D_s^+ -> \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ from a sample of muonic one prong decay events detected in the emulsion target of Fermilab experiment E653. Using the $D_s^+ -> \phi \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ yield measured previously in this experiment, we obtain $B(D_s^+ --> \mu^+ \nu_\mu) / B(D_s^+ --> \phi \mu^+ \nu_\mu) =0.16 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.03$. In addition, we extract the decay constant $f_{D_s}=194 \pm 35 \pm 20 \pm 14 MeV$., Comment: 15 pages including one figure

Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS collecting about 10 6 neutrino interactions. A measurement of ?¯µ-induced charm production is performed by using the presence of a 5% ?¯µ component in the ?µ beam. The measurement takes advantage of the capability to observe the decay topology in the emulsion. The analysis is based on a sample of charged-current interactions with at least one identified muon. About 100000 were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed. By requiring a positive muon charge as determined by the CHORUS muon spectrometer, 32?¯µ-induced charm events were observed with an estimated background of 3.2 events. At an average antineutrino energy in the neutrino beam of 18 GeV, the charm production rate induced by antineutrinos is measured to be ?(?¯µN›µ+c¯X)/?(?¯µN›µ+X) =(5.0-0.9+1.4(stat)±0.7(syst))%. The ratio between neutral and charged charm production rates in this process is (2.6-1.0+1.7(stat)±0.8(syst)). The charm production rate as a function of the antineutrino energy is found to be in good agreement with previous results derived from di-lepton data. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract: The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory has measured the velocity of neutrinos from the CERN CNGS beam over a baseline of about 730 km. The measurement is based on data taken by OPERA in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dedicated upgrades of the CNGS timing system and of the OPERA detector, as well as a high precision geodesy campaign for the measurement of the neutrino baseline, allowed reaching comparable systematic and statistical accuracies. An arrival time of CNGS muon neutrinos with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of (6:5 ± 7:4 (stat:) +8.34 -8.0(sys:)) ns was measured corresponding to a relative difference of the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light (v - c)=c = (2:7 ± 3:1 (stat:) +3.4 -3:3 (sys:)) × 10 -6. Abstract: The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) has been designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode through the study of the v(mu) -> v(tau) channel. The hybrid apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2008 and 2009. After a brief description of the beam, the experimental setup and the procedures used for the analysis of the neutrino events, we describe the topology and kinematics of a first candidate v(tau) charged-current event satisfying the kinematical selection criteria. Abstract: The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) has been designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode through the study of the νμ→ντ channel. The hybrid apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2008 and 2009. After a brief description of the beam, the experimental setup and the procedures used for the analysis of the neutrino events, we describe the topology and kinematics of a first candidate ?? charged-current event satisfying the kinematical selection criteria. The background calculations and their cross-check are explained in detail and the significance of the event is assessed.

Abstract: New methods for efficient and unambiguous interconnection between electronic counters and target units based on nuclear photographic emulsion films have been developed. The application to the OPERA experiment, that aims at detecting oscillations between mu neutrino and tau neutrino in the CNGS neutrino beam, is reported in this paper. In order to reduce background due to latent tracks collected before installation in the detector, on-site large-scale treatments of the emulsions ("refreshing") have been applied. Changeable Sheet (CSd) packages, each made of a doublet of emulsion films, have been designed, assembled and coupled to the OPERA target units ("ECC bricks"). A device has been built to print X-ray spots for accurate interconnection both within the CSd and between the CSd and the related ECC brick. Sample emulsion films have been extensively scanned with state-of-the-art automated optical microscopes. Efficient track-matching and powerful background rejection have been achieved in tests with electronically tagged penetrating muons. Further improvement of in-doublet film alignment was obtained by matching the pattern of low-energy electron tracks. Abstract: The OPERA neutrino experiment in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the νμ → ντ channel, the ντ signature being the identification of the τ-lepton created in its charged current interaction. The hybrid apparatus consists of a large mass emulsion film/lead target complemented by electronic detectors. Placed in the LNGS, it is exposed to the high-energy long-baseline CERN Neutrino beam to Gran Sasso (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. The observation of a first ντ candidate event was reported in 2010. In this paper, we discuss the result of the analysis of the data taken during the first two years of operation (2008–2009) underlining the major improvements brought to the analysis chain and to the Monte Carlo simulations. The statistical significance of the one event observed so far is then evaluated to 95%.

The statistical significance of the one event observed so far is then assessed. Abstract: The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7., 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: During the years 1994-97, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events which was based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 1048 charged-current interactions with a D^0 in the final state were selected by a pattern recognition program and confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. The ratio of decay branching fractions of the D^0 into four-charged particles to two charged particles was measured to B(D^0 -> V4) / B(D^0 -> V2) = 0.207+- 0.004. The inclusive measurement of the observed production rate of the D^0 with a decay into four charged prongs in combination with external measurements of this topological branching ratio was used to determine the total D^0 production rate by neutrinos without additional assumption on the branching fractions. The value of this rate relative to the charged-current cross-section was found to be \sigma(D^0) / \sigma(CC) = 0.0269 +- 0.0018 +- 0.0013. In addition, the same normalization method was used to deduce the inclusive topological decay rate into final states with neutral particles only. A value of 0.218 +- 0.049 +- 0.036 was found for this branching fraction. From an observed number of three charged six-prongs events the branching ratio into six charged particles was determined to be (1.2^1.3_-0.9 +- 0.2) x 10^-3. A measurement of the energy dependence of the D^0 production by neutrinos relative to the total charged-current cross-section is also reported. This measurement was used to deduce for m_c, the effective charm-quark mass, a value of (1.42 +- 0.08) GeV/c^2.

Abstract: During the years 1994-1997, the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS. In total about 100 000 charged-current neutrino interactions were located in the nuclear emulsion target and fully reconstructed. From this sample of events which was based on the data acquired by new automatic scanning systems, 1048 D0 events were selected by a pattern recognition program. They were confirmed as neutral-particle decays through visual inspection. Fragmentation properties of deep-inelastic charm production were measured using these events. Distributions of the D0 momentum, Feynman x (xF), z and tan?out, the transverse angle out of the leptonic plane defined by the muon and the neutrino, are presented. The mean value of z was measured to be =0.63±0.03(stat)±0.01(syst). From fits to the z distribution, values for the Peterson parameter ?P=0.108±0.017(stat) ±0.013(syst) and the Collins-Spiller parameter ?CS=0.21-0.04+0. 05(stat)±0.04(syst) are found. For the average value of xF we find =0.38±0.04(stat)±0.03(syst) and for the forward-backward asymmetry A=0.79±0.14(stat)±0.05(syst). Abstract: A measurement of $\Lambda_c^+$ production in neutrino nucleon charged-current interactions is presented. In a sub-sample of about 50 000 interactions located in the emulsion target of the CHORUS detector exposed to the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS, candidates for decays of short lived particles were identified using new automatic scanning systems and later confirmed through visual inspection. Criteria based on the flight length allowed a statistical separation among the different charm species thus enabling a sample particularly rich in $\Lambda_c^+$ to be defined. At an average neutrino energy of $27$ \GeV, the product ${\sigma(\Lambda_c^+)}/{\sigma(CC)} \times BR(\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow 3p) $ was measured to be $(0.37 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.02(syst) ) \times 10^{-2}$, while the values of $(1.54\pm0.35(stat)\pm0.18(syst) ) \times 10^{-2} $ and of $0.24 \pm 0.07(stat) \pm 0.04(syst)$ were obtained for ${\sigma(\Lambda_c^+)}/{\sigma(CC)}$ and $BR(\Lambda_c^+ \rightarrow 3p)$ respectively.

Abstract: A first analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. The search for $\nut$ charged current events has been performed for both leptonic and hadronic decays of the $\tauu$ lepton. No $\tauu$ candidate has been found. A $\numtonut$ mixing is excluded down to $\sin2t$ = $6.8 \times 10^{-4}$ for large $\dm2$ (90\%~C.L.).

Abstract: We report on the first direct observation of a neutrino induced charged-current interaction with two subsequent decays of short-lived particles close to the interaction vertex. This rare double- kink signature in the CHORUS emulsion target is interpreted as a $D_s^{*+}$ production followed by the decay chain $D_s^{*+} \rightarrow D_s^+ \gamma, D_s^+ \rightarrow \tau^+ \nu_\tau ,$ \linebr eak $\tau^+\rightarrow \mu^+\nu_\mu\bar{\nu_\tau}$. The event is characterised by small $Q^2$ and small four-momentum transfer squared $t$ to the target nucleon, which indicates a diffractive pr oduction mechanism. A complete analysis of the event is presented.

Abstract: Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for $\nu_{\tau}$ charged current interactions followed by the $\tau$ lepton deca y into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for $\numtonut$ oscillation. A sample of 6,844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the s election criteria, no $\tau^-$ candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for $\nu_\tau$ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36,182 events with an identified muon), a 90\% C.L. limit on the mixing angle $\sin2t < 1.8\cdot 10^{-3}$ (at large $\Delta m^2$) has been derived.

Abstract: CHORUS is an experiment searching for $\numtonut$ oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a {\sl hybrid} setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for $\nu_\tau$ charged current interactions where the $\tau$ lepton decays to $\mu \bar{\nu}_\mu\nu_\tau$. In a sample of 31,423 $\num$ charged current interactions, no $\nu_\tau$ candidates were found. For large $\dm2$ values, a limit on the mixing angle of $\sin2t < 3.5 \times 10^{-3}$ at $90\%$ C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result.

Abstract: A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for $\nu_{\mu}~\rightarrow~\nu_{\tau}$ oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.
