We present our numerical results for certain unsteady flows past oscillating cylinders and aerofoils. The computations are based on the stabilized space-time finite element formulation. The implicit equation systems resulting from the space-time finite element discretizations are solved using iterative solution techniques. One of the problems studied is flow past a cylinder which is forced to oscillate in the horizontal direction. In this case we observe a change from an unsymmetric mode of vortex shedding to a symmetric one. An extensive study was carried out for the case in which a cylinder is mounted on lightly damped springs and allowed to oscillate in the vertical direction. In this case the motion of the cylinder needs to be determined as part of the solution, and under certain conditions this motion changes the vortex-shedding pattern of the flow field significantly. This nonlinear fluid-structure interaction exhibits certain interesting behavior such as 'lock-in' and 'hysteresis', which are in good agreement with the laboratory experiments carried out by other researchers in the past. Preliminary results for flow past a pitching aerofoil are also presented.

Among the solution techniques presented for FEM computation of incompressible flows are stabilized formulations designed to prevent the numerical oscillations that may be generated by (1) the presence of dominant advection terms in the governing equations, or (2) the failure to use an acceptable combination of interpolation functions to represent velocity and pressure fields. It is shown that the space-time formulation, in conjunction with the Galerkin-least squares methods, can be used to compute steady incompressible flows involving moving boundaries and interfaces; it is recommended that iteration methods be used to reduce the associated computational costs.

While the methods thus far developed for vorticity-streamfunction formulation are thus far restricted to 2D flows, they are applicable to both viscous and inviscid flows, including problems with multiply-connected domains. The present solution techniques for the velocity-pressure formulation can be extended to 3D problems. Attention is given to (1) two multistep formulations that use piecewise bilinear functions for the velocity and piecewise constant functions for the pressure, and (2) a novel multistep velocity-pressure formulation based on the equal-order interpolation of velocity and pressure.

Quadrilateral velocity-pressure elements with constant and linear pressure interpolations are examined in the context of time-accurate finite element computation of unsteady incompressible flows. These elements involve streamline-upwind/Petrov-Galerkin stabilization and are implemented in conjunction with the one-step and multi-step temporal integration of the Navier-Stokes equations. The two test cases chosen for the performance evaluation of the formulations are the standing vortex problem and flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 100.

The influence of the location of the outflow computational boundary on the unsteady incompressible flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds number 100 is examined. The vorticity-streamfunction formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is used in all computations. Two types of outflow boundary conditions are subjected to a series of tests in which the domain length is gradually reduced. The traction-free condition performs well in most cases and allows the outflow boundary to be located as close as 6.5 cylinder diameters from the body. The other boundary condition type is not as forgiving, but has the advantage of being simpler to implement and can still provide reasonably accurate solutions. It is also observed that both condition types can influence the flow field strongly and globally when the boundary is brought closer than 2.5 diameters from the body. In such cases the temporal periodicity of the solution is lost.

Downstream boundary conditions equivalent to the homogeneous form of the natural boundary conditions associated with the velocity-pressure formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations are derived for the vorticity-stream function formulation of two-dimensional incompressible flows. Of particular interest are the zero normal and shear stress conditions at a downstream boundary.

Finite element computation of compressible Euler equations is presented in the context of the streamline-upwind/Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) formulation. The SUPG formulation, which is based on adding stabilizing terms to the Galerkin formulation, is further supplemented with a shock capturing operator which addresses the difficulty in maintaining a satisfactory solution near discontinuities in the solution field. The shock capturing operator, which has been derived from work done in entropy variables for a similar operator, is shown to lead to an appropriate level of additional stabilization near shocks, without resulting in excessive numerical diffusion. An implicit treatment of the impermeable wall boundary condition is also presented. This treatment of the no-penetration condition offers increased stability for large Courant numbers, and accelerated convergence of the computations for both implicit and explicit applications. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the ability of this method to solve the equations governing compressible fluid flow.

A review of the solution techniques of Tezduyar et al. (1988 and 1989) for the vorticity-streamfunction formulation of two-dimensional incompressible flows is presented. While both the viscous and inviscid cases are considered, the derivation of the proper finite-element formulations for multiply connected domains is emphasized. In all formulations associated with the vorticity transport equation, the streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin method is used. The adaptive implicit-explicit and grouped element-by-element solution strategies are employed to maximize the computational efficiency. The solutions obtained in all test cases compare well with solutions from previously published investigations. The convergence and benchmark studies performed in this paper show that the solution techniques presented are accurate, reliable, and efficient.

Finite element procedures and computations based on the velocity-pressure and vorticity-stream function formulations of incompressible flows are presented. Two new multistep velocity-pressure formulations are proposed and compared with the vorticity-stream function and one-step formulations. The example problems chosen are the standing vortex problem and flow past a circular cylinder. Benchmark quality computations are performed for the cylinder problem. The numerical results indicate that the vorticity-stream function formulation and one of the two new multistep formulations involve much less numerical dissipation than the one-step formulation.

A comparative investigation, based on a series of numerical tests, of various velocity-pressure elements used for incompressible flow computations is presented. These elements are implemented in conjunction with one-step and multi-step temporal integration of unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. The test cases chosen are the standing vortex problem, the lid-driven cavity flow, and flow past a circular cylinder.

Adaptive implicit-explicit (AIE), grouped element-by-element (GEBE), and generalized minimum residuals (GMRES) solution techniques for incompressible flows are combined. In this approach, the GEBE and GMRES iteration methods are employed to solve the equation systems resulting from the implicitly treated elements, and therefore no direct solution effort is involved. The benchmarking results demonstrate that this approach can substantially reduce the CPU time and memory requirements in large-scale flow problems. Although the description of the concepts and the numerical demonstration are based on the incompressible flows, the approach presented here is applicable to larger class of problems in computational mechanics.

Studies on the adaptive implicit-explicit (AIE) method for large-scale problems are presented. The AIE method is based on dynamic grouping of the elements into the implicit and explicit subsets as dictated by the element level stability and accuracy considerations. The method has been applied to various flow problems including the incompressible flow and convection-diffusion problems, and it has been demonstrated that substantial savings in CPU time and memory can be achieved.

Finite element computations and laboratory experiments were carried out to study the mutual wake interaction behind two plates placed side by side. The computations are based on the vorticity-stream function formation of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The flow visualization studies indicate independent vortex sheddings at large gap sizes and metastable biased flow at smaller gap sizes. The computational results exhibit a similar behavior.

A three-step Petrov-Galerkin (PG)/operator spliting scheme for the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is proposed. Each time step is split into two Stokes problems and one nonlinear convection-diffusion problem. Using a PG technique on the two outer Stokes problems ensures a stable scheme despite equal-order interpolation, while using a streamline upwind PG scheme on the inner convection-diffusion problem ensures a numerically stable solution at high Reynolds numbers. Numerical tests of this method have been carried out.

Adaptive implicit-explicit (AIE) and grouped element-by-element (GEBE) iteration schemes are presented for the finite element solution of large-scale problems in computational mechanics and physics. The AIE approach is based on the dynamic arrangement of the elements into differently treated groups. The GEBE procedure, which is a way of rewriting the EBE formulation to make its parallel processing potential and implementation more clear, is based on the static arrangement of the elements into groups with no inter-element coupling within each group. Various numerical tests performed demonstrate the savings in the CPU time and memory.

Preconditioner algorithms to reduce the computational effort in FEM analyses of large-scale fluid-dynamics problems are presented. A general model problem is constructed on the basis of the convection-diffusion equation and the two-dimensional vorticity/stream-function formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations; this problem is then analyzed using element-by-element, implicit-explicit, and adaptive implicit-explicit approximation schemes. Numerical results for the two-dimensional advection and rigid-body rotation of a cosine hill, flow past a circular cylinder, and driven cavity flow are presented in extensive graphs and shown to be in good agreement with those obtained using implicit methods.

The adaptive implicit-explicit (AIE) approach is presented for the finite-element solution of various problems in computational fluid mechanics. In the AIE approach, the elements are dynamically (adaptively) arranged into differently treated groups. The differences in treatment could be based on considerations such as the cost efficiency, the type of spatial or temporal discretization employed, the choice of field equations, etc. Several numerical tests are performed to demonstrate that this approach can achieve substantial savings in CPU time and memory.

New finite element procedures based on the streamline-upwind/Petrov-Galerkin formulations are developed for time-dependent convection-diffusion-reaction equations. These procedures minimize spurious oscillations for convection-dominated and reaction-dominated problems. The results obtained for representative numerical examples are accurate with minimal oscillations. As a special application problem, the single-well chemical tracer test (a procedure for measuring oil remaining in a depleted field) is simulated numerically. The results show the importance of temperature effects on the interpreted value of residual oil saturation from such tests.

Element-by-element approximate factorization, implicit-explicit and adaptive implicit-explicit approximation procedures are presented for the finite-element formulations of large-scale fluid dynamics problems. The element-by-element approximation scheme totally eliminates the need for formation, storage and inversion of large global matrices. Implicit-explicit schemes, which are approximations to implicit schemes, substantially reduce the computational burden associated with large global matrices. In the adaptive implicit-explicit scheme, the implicit elements are selected dynamically based on element level stability and accuracy considerations. This scheme provides implicit refinement where it is needed. The methods are applied to various problems governed by the convection-diffusion and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In all cases studied, the results obtained are indistinguishable from those obtained by the implicit formulations.

Finite element procedures for the Navier-Stokes equations in the primitive variable formulation and the vorticity stream-function formulation have been implemented. For both formulations, streamline-upwind/Petrov-Galerkin techniques are used for the discretization of the transport equations. The main problem associated with the vorticity stream-function formulation is the lack of boundary conditions for vorticity at solid surfaces. Here an implicit treatment of the vorticity at no-slip boundaries is incorporated in a predictor-multicorrector time integration scheme. For the primitive variable formulation, mixed finite-element approximations are used. A nine-node element and a four-node + bubble element have been implemented. The latter is shown to exhibit a checkerboard pressure mode and a numerical treatment for this spurious pressure mode is proposed. The two methods are compared from the points of view of simulating internal and external flows and the possibilities of extensions to three dimensions.

The paper presents procedures for the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in the vorticity-stream function form. The difficulties involved are related to the convection term in the vorticity transport equation and to the lack of boundary conditions for voritcity at no-slip surfaces. The use of a streamline-upwind/Petrov-Galerkin finite element formulation for the solution of the vorticity transport equation. In the present scheme, the weighting functions are dependent on both spatial and temporal discretizations. A proper numerical treatment of the boundary conditions leading to an implicit treatment of the vorticity at no-slip surfaces is presented. These procedures have successfully been employed to simulate various flows of engineering interest.

A new Petrov-Galerkin finite element formulation has been proposed for transient convection-diffusion problems. Most Petrov-Galerkin formulations take into account the spatial discretization, and the weighting functions so developed give satisfactory solutions for steady state problems. Though these schemes can be used for transient problems, there is scope for improvement. The schemes proposed here, which consider temporal as well as spatial discretization, provide improved solutions. Electrophoresis, which involves the motion of charged entities under the influence of an applied electric field, is governed by equations similiar to those encountered in fluid flow problems, i.e., transient convection-diffusion equations. Test problems are solved in electrophoresis and fluid flow. The results obtained are satisfactory. It is also expected that these schemes, suitably adapted, will improve the numerical solutions of the compressible Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations.

The present investigation is concerned with a fully discrete accuracy and stability analysis of the one-dimensional heat equation, taking into account the evaluation of two-pass explicit schemes which simultaneously employ lumped and coupled capacity matrices. Schemes of the considered characteristics are not amenable to uncoupled semidiscrete and ordinary differential equation analyses. The obtained results illustrate that superior behavior may be achieved by schemes of the employed type when compared with the performance of the standard one-pass explicit schemes. The key idea in the considered approach is related to the utilization of a reduced-quadrature capacity matrix in the evaluation of the right-hand-side residual.

Multi-dimensional generalizations of a one-dimensional finite element shock capturing scheme are proposed. A scalar model problem is used to emphasize that 'preferred directions' are important in multi-dimensional applications. Schemes are developed for the two-dimensional Euler equations. One, based upon characteristics, employs the Mach lines and streamlines as preferred directions.

A Petrov-Galerkin finite element formulation is presented for first-order hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with particular emphasis on the compressible Euler equations. Applications of the methodology are made to one- and two-dimensional steady and unsteady flows with shocks. Results obtained suggest the potential of the type of methods developed.

The present investigation is concerned with some basic results for a predictor-multicorrector algorithm applied to the one-dimensional wave equation, giving particular attention to so-called 2-pass explicit schemes in which both lumped and coupled mass matrices are employed. In an assessment of the accuracy and stability properties of the algorithms, use is made of the one-dimensional, second-order wave equation. The maximum stable time step of the lumped right-hand-side mass, 2-pass explicit algorithm is twice that of the 1-pass explicit algorithm. Improved accuracy is obtained by employing higher-order, or consistent, right-hand-side, mass.
