Dispersion measures (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) probe the density of electrons in the intergalactic medium (IGM) along their lines-of-sight, including the average density versus distance to the source and its variations in direction. While previous study focused on low-redshift, FRBs are potentially detectable out to high redshift, where their DMs can, in principle, probe the epoch of reionization (EOR) and its patchiness. We present the first predictions from large-scale, radiation-hydrodynamical simulation of fully-coupled galaxy formation and reionization, using Cosmic Dawn (``CoDa")~II to model the density and ionization fields of the universe down to redshifts through the end of the EOR at $z_{re}\approx6.1$. Combining this with an N-body simulation CoDa~II--Dark Matter of the fully-ionized epoch from the EOR to the present, we calculate the mean and standard deviation of FRB DMs as functions of their source redshift. The mean and standard deviation of DM increase with redshift, reaching a plateau by $z(x_{HII}\lesssim0.25)\gtrsim8$, i.e. well above $z_{re}$. The mean-DM asymptote $\mathcal{DM}_{max} \approx 5900~\mathrm{pc\, cm^{-3}}$ reflects the end of the EOR and its duration. The standard deviation there is $\sigma_{DM, max}\approx497 ~\mathrm{pc\, cm^{-3}}$, reflecting inhomogeneities of both patchy reionization and density. Inhomogeneities in ionization during the EOR contribute $\mathcal{O}(1$ per cent) of this value of $\sigma_{DM,max}$ from FRBs at redshifts $z\gtrsim 8$. Motivated by the early excess of bright galaxies seen by \textit{JWST}, we run zoom-in cosmological simulations of a massive galaxy at Cosmic Dawn (MDG), in a halo of $10^{11} M_\odot$ at $z = 9$, using the hydro-gravitational code RAMSES at an effective resolution $\sim 10~{\rm pc}$. We investigate physical mechanisms that enhance the star-formation efficiencies (SFEs) under the unique conditions of high gas density ($\sim 3\times 10^3~{\rm cm^{-3}}$, $\sim 10^4~M_\odot/{\rm pc^2}$). Our fiducial star formation recipe uses a physically-motivated, turbulence-based, multi-freefall model, avoiding ad-hoc extrapolation from lower redshifts. By $z = 9$, our simulated galaxy is a clumpy, thick, rotating disc with a high stellar mass of a few $10^9~M_\odot$ and high star formation rate of $\sim 100~M_\odot/{\rm yr}$. The high gas density makes supernova (SN) feedback less effective at suppressing star formation, producing a relatively high local SFE $\gtrsim 10\%$. The global SFE is dominated by feedback-driven outflows and is only weakly correlated with the local SFE. Photoionization heating can enhance the effects of SN feedback on the local SFE by making more SNe explode in diffuse environments, but the global SFE remains high even in our simulations with the strongest feedback. Intense accretion at Cosmic Dawn seeds strong turbulence, which reduces the local SFE for the same gas conditions due to turbulent pressure support. This prevents star-forming clouds from catastrophically collapsing, but this only weakly affects the global SFE. The star formation histories of our simulated galaxies are in the ballpark of the MDGs seen by \textit{JWST}, despite our limited resolution. They set the stage for future simulations which treat radiation self-consistently and use a higher effective resolution $\sim 1~{\rm pc}$ which captures the physics of star-forming clouds., Comment: 30 pages, 19 figures. Recently, NIRSpec PRISM/CLEAR observations by JWST have begun providing rest-frame UV continuum measurements of galaxies at $z\gtrsim7$, revealing signatures of Ly$\alpha$ damping-wing (DW) absorption by the intergalactic medium (IGM). We develop a methodology to constrain the global ionization fraction of the IGM $(Q_{\rm HII})$ using low-resolution spectra, employing the random forest classification (RFC) method. We construct mock spectra using the simulated galaxies and the IGM from the Cosmic Dawn II simulation and train RFC models to estimate $Q_{\rm HII}$ at the redshift of the source and to detect the presence of a damped Ly$\alpha$ absorber (DLA). We find that individual galaxy spectra with spectral bins between 1220 and 1270 {\AA} and with signal-to-noise ratios greater than 20 can place tight constraints on $Q_{\rm HII}$, provided the UV continuum is accurately modeled. This method is particularly effective for the early phase of reionization ($Q_{\rm HII}<50\%$), when the IGM opacity is high in the DW. As a demonstration, we apply our model to existing NIRSpec PRISM/CLEAR spectra, placing upper bounds of $Q_{\rm HII}=59.6\%$, $5.6\%$, and $18.5\%$ at $z=7.7,~9.4,$ and $10.6$, respectively, with $68\%$ confidence, though several modeling uncertainties remain to be discussed. These constraints favor late-starting reionization models, where $\gtrsim 80\%$ of the IGM is ionized after $z=8$. Traditional star formation subgrid models implemented in cosmological galaxy formation simulations, such as that of Springel & Hernquist (2003, hereafter SH03), employ adjustable parameters to satisfy constraints measured in the local Universe. In recent years, however, theory and spatially-resolved simulations of the turbulent, multiphase, star-forming ISM have begun to produce new first-principles models, which when fully developed can replace traditional subgrid prescriptions. This approach has advantages of being physically motivated and predictive rather than empirically tuned, and allowing for varying environmental conditions rather than being tied to local Universe conditions. As a prototype of this new approach, by combining calibrations from the TIGRESS numerical framework with the Pressure-Regulated Feedback-Modulated (PRFM) theory, simple formulae can be obtained for both the gas depletion time and an effective equation of state. Considering galaxies in TNG50, we compare the "native" simulation outputs with post-processed predictions from PRFM. At TNG50 resolution, the total midplane pressure is nearly equal to the total ISM weight, indicating that galaxies in TNG50 are close to satisfying vertical equilibrium. The measured gas scale height is also close to theoretical equilibrium predictions. The slopes of the effective equations of states are similar, but with effective velocity dispersion normalization from SH03 slightly larger than that from current TIGRESS simulations. Because of this and the decrease in PRFM feedback yield at high pressure, the PRFM model predicts shorter gas depletion times than the SH03 model at high densities and redshift. We investigate the spatial offsets between dust and ultraviolet (UV) emission in high-redshift galaxies using the Cosmic Dawn III (CoDa III) simulation, a state-of-the-art fully coupled radiation-hydrodynamics cosmological simulation. Recent observations have revealed puzzling spatial disparities between ALMA dust continuum and UV emission as seen by HST and JWST in galaxies at z=5-7, compelling us to propose a physical interpretation of such offsets. Our simulation, which incorporates a dynamical dust model, naturally reproduces these offsets in massive, UV-bright galaxies (log$_{10}$(M$_{\rm{DM}}$/M$_{\odot}$)>11.5, M$_{\rm{AB1500}}$<-20). We find that dust-UV offsets increase with halo mass and UV brightness, reaching up to $\sim 2$ pkpc for the most massive systems, in good agreement with observational data from the ALPINE and REBELS surveys. Our analysis reveals that these offsets primarily result from severe dust extinction in galactic centers rather than a misalignment between dust and stellar mass distributions. The dust remains well-aligned with the bulk stellar component, and we predict the dust continuum should therefore align well with the stellar rest-frame NIR component, less affected by dust attenuation. To understand the impact of star formation models on galaxy evolution, we perform cosmological zoom-in radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of a dwarf dark matter halo with virial mass 1e9 Msun at z=6. Two different star formation models are compared, a model based on a local gravo-thermo-turbulent condition and a model based on a sink particle algorithm. Using idealized tests of collapsing isothermal spheres and giant molecular clouds with different turbulent structures, we determine the optimal accretion radius to be twice the cell size and the resolution required to achieve reasonable convergence in star formation efficiency to 0.3 pc for the sink algorithm. As a first study in this series, we use cosmological zoom-in simulations with different spatial resolutions and find that star formation is more bursty in the runs with the sink algorithm, generating stronger outflows than in the runs with the gravo-thermo-turbulent model. The main reason for the increased burstiness is that the gas accretion rates on the sinks are high enough to form stars on very short timescales, leading to more clustered star formation. As a result, the star-forming clumps are disrupted more quickly in the sink run due to more coherent radiation and supernova feedback. The difference in burstiness between the two star formation models becomes even more pronounced when the supernova explosion energy is artificially increased. Motivated by the need for realistic, dynamically self-consistent, evolving galaxy models that avoid the complexity of full, and zoom-in, cosmological simulations, we have developed NEXUS, an integral framework to create and evolve synthetic galaxies made of collisionless and gaseous components. NEXUS leverages the power of publicly available, tried-and-tested packages: the stellar-dynamics, action-based library AGAMA; and the adaptive mesh refinement, N-body/hydrodynamical code RAMSES, modified to meet our needs. In addition, we make use of a proprietary module to account for galaxy formation physics, including gas cooling and heating, star formation, stellar feedback, and chemical enrichment. NEXUS' basic functionality consists in the generation of bespoke initial conditions (ICs) for a diversity of galaxy models, which are advanced in time to simulate the galaxy's evolution. The fully self-consistent ICs are generated with a distribution-function based approach, as implemented in the galaxy modelling module of AGAMA -- up to now restricted to collisionless components, extended in this work to treat two types of gaseous configurations: hot halos and gas discs. NEXUS allows constructing equilibrium models with disc gas fractions $0~\leq~f_{\rm gas}~\leq~1$, appropriate to model both low- and high-redshift galaxies. Similarly, the framework is ideally suited to the study of galactic ecology, i.e. the dynamical interplay between stars and gas over billions of years. As a validation and illustration of our framework, we reproduce several isolated galaxy model setups reported in earlier studies, and present a new, `nested bar' galaxy simulation. We investigate the gas-grain relative drift velocity distributions of charged astrophysical dust grains in MHD turbulence. We do this using a range of MHD-PIC simulations spanning different plasma-$\beta$, sonic/Alfv\'en Mach number, and with grains of varying size and charge-to-mass ratio. We find that the root-mean-square drift velocity is a strong function of the grain size, following a power law with a 1/2 slope. The r.m.s. value has only a very weak dependence on the charge-to-mass ratio. On the other hand, the shape of the distribution is a strong function of the grain charge-to-mass ratio, and in compressible turbulence, also the grain size. We then compare these results to simple analytic models based upon time-domain quasi-linear theory and solutions to the Fokker-Planck equation. These models explain qualitatively the r.m.s. drift velocity's lack of charge-to-mass ratio dependence, as well as why the shape of the distribution changes as the charge-to-mass ratio increases. Finally we scale our results to astrophysical conditions. As an example, at a length scale of one parsec in the cold neutral medium, 0.1 $\mu$m grains should be drifting at roughly 40% of the turbulent velocity dispersion. These findings may serve as a basis for a model for grain velocities in the context of grain-grain collisions, non-thermal sputtering, and accretion of metals. We introduce the DREAMS project, an innovative approach to understanding the astrophysical implications of alternative dark matter models and their effects on galaxy formation and evolution. The DREAMS project will ultimately comprise thousands of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations that simultaneously vary over dark matter physics, astrophysics, and cosmology in modeling a range of systems -- from galaxy clusters to ultra-faint satellites. Such extensive simulation suites can provide adequate training sets for machine-learning-based analyses. This paper introduces two new cosmological hydrodynamical suites of Warm Dark Matter, each comprised of 1024 simulations generated using the Arepo code. One suite consists of uniform-box simulations covering a $(25~h^{-1}~{\rm M}_\odot)^3$ volume, while the other consists of Milky Way zoom-ins with sufficient resolution to capture the properties of classical satellites. For each simulation, the Warm Dark Matter particle mass is varied along with the initial density field and several parameters controlling the strength of baryonic feedback within the IllustrisTNG model. We provide two examples, separately utilizing emulators and Convolutional Neural Networks, to demonstrate how such simulation suites can be used to disentangle the effects of dark matter and baryonic physics on galactic properties. The DREAMS project can be extended further to include different dark matter models, galaxy formation physics, and astrophysical targets. High-order finite volume and finite element methods offer impressive accuracy and cost efficiency when solving hyperbolic conservation laws with smooth solutions. However, if the solution contains discontinuities, these high-order methods can introduce unphysical oscillations and severe overshoots/undershoots. Slope limiters are an effective remedy, combating these oscillations by preserving monotonicity. Some limiters can even maintain a strict maximum principle in the numerical solution. They can be classified into one of two categories: \textit{a priori} and \textit{a posteriori} limiters. The former revises the high-order solution based only on data at the current time $t^n$, while the latter involves computing a candidate solution at $t^{n+1}$ and iteratively recomputing it until some conditions are satisfied. These two limiting paradigms are available for both finite volume and finite element methods. In this work, we develop a methodology to compare \textit{a priori} and \textit{a posteriori} limiters for finite volume solvers at arbitrarily high order. We select the maximum principle preserving scheme presented in \cite{zhang2011maximum, zhang2010maximum} as our \textit{a priori} limited scheme. For \textit{a posteriori} limiting, we adopt the methodology presented in \cite{clain2011high} and search for so-called \textit{troubled cells} in the candidate solution. We revise them with a robust MUSCL fallback scheme. The linear advection equation is solved in both one and two dimensions and we compare variations of these limited schemes based on their ability to maintain a maximum principle, solution quality over long time integration and computational cost. ...

In this fourth paper from the AGORA Collaboration, we study the evolution down to redshift $z=2$ and below of a set of cosmological zoom-in simulations of a Milky Way mass galaxy by eight of the leading hydrodynamic simulation codes. We also compare this CosmoRun suite of simulations with dark matter-only simulations by the same eight codes. We analyze general properties of the halo and galaxy at $z=4$ and 3, and before the last major merger, focusing on the formation of well-defined rotationally-supported disks, the mass-metallicity relation, the specific star formation rate, the gas metallicity gradients, and the non-axisymmetric structures in the stellar disks. Codes generally converge well to the stellar-to-halo mass ratios predicted by semi-analytic models at $z\sim$2. We see that almost all the hydro codes develop rotationally-supported structures at low redshifts. Most agree within 0.5 dex with the observed MZR at high and intermediate redshifts, and reproduce the gas metallicity gradients obtained from analytical models and low-redshift observations. We confirm that the inter-code differences in the halo assembly history reported in the first paper of the collaboration also exist in CosmoRun, making the code-to-code comparison more difficult. We show that such differences are mainly due to variations in code-dependent parameters that control the time-stepping strategy of the gravity solver. We find that variations in the early stellar feedback can also result in differences in the timing of the low-redshift mergers. We analyze and compare the satellite halo populations at $z\sim2$ in the high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of a $10^{12}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ target halo ($z=0$ mass) carried out on eight widely-used astrophysical simulation codes ({\sc Art-I}, {\sc Enzo}, {\sc Ramses}, {\sc Changa}, {\sc Gadget-3}, {\sc Gear}, {\sc Arepo-t}, and {\sc Gizmo}) for the {\it AGORA} High-resolution Galaxy Simulations Comparison Project. We use slightly different redshift epochs near $z=2$ for each code (hereafter ``$z\sim2$') at which the eight simulations are in the same stage in the target halo's merger history. After identifying the matched pairs of halos between the {\it CosmoRun} simulations and the DMO simulations, we discover that each {\it CosmoRun} halo tends to be less massive than its DMO counterpart. When we consider only the halos containing stellar particles at $z\sim2$, the number of satellite {\it galaxies} is significantly fewer than that of dark matter halos in all participating {\it AGORA} simulations, and is comparable to the number of present-day satellites near the Milky Way or M31. The so-called ``missing satellite problem' is fully resolved across all participating codes simply by implementing the common baryonic physics adopted in {\it AGORA} and the stellar feedback prescription commonly used in each code, with sufficient numerical resolution ($\lesssim100$ proper pc at $z=2$). We also compare other properties such as the stellar mass$-$halo mass relation and the mass$-$metallicity relation. We analyze the circumgalactic medium (CGM) for eight commonly-used cosmological codes in the AGORA collaboration. The codes are calibrated to use identical initial conditions, cosmology, heating and cooling, and star formation thresholds, but each evolves with its own unique code architecture and stellar feedback implementation. Here, we analyze the results of these simulations in terms of the structure, composition, and phase dynamics of the CGM. We show properties such as metal distribution, ionization levels, and kinematics are effective tracers of the effects of the different code feedback and implementation methods, and as such they can be highly divergent between simulations. This is merely a fiducial set of models, against which we will in the future compare multiple feedback recipes for each code. Nevertheless, we find that the large parameter space these simulations establish can help disentangle the different variables that affect observable quantities in the CGM, e.g., showing that abundances for ions with higher ionization energy are more strongly determined by the simulation's metallicity, while abundances for ions with lower ionization energy are more strongly determined by the gas density and temperature., Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures. Star formation has been observed to occur at globally low yet locally varying efficiencies. As such, accurate capture of star formation in numerical simulations requires mechanisms that can replicate both its smaller-scale variations and larger-scale properties. Magnetic fields are thought to play an essential role within the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) and affect molecular cloud collapse. However, it remains to be fully explored how a magnetised model of star formation might influence galaxy evolution. We present a new model for a sub-grid star formation recipe that depends on the magnetic field. We run isolated disk galaxy simulations to assess its impact on the regulation of star formation using the code RAMSES. Building upon existing numerical methods, our model derives the star formation efficiency from local properties of the sub-grid magnetised ISM turbulence, assuming a constant Alfv\'en speed at sub-parsec scales. Compared to its non-magnetised counterpart, our star formation model suppresses the initial starburst by a factor of two, while regulating star formation later on to a nearly constant rate of $\sim 1~M_{\odot}~\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$. Differences also arise in the local Schmidt law with a shallower power law index for the magnetised star formation model. We present the first cosmological constraints using only the observed photometry of galaxies. Villaescusa-Navarro et al. (2022; arXiv:2201.02202) recently demonstrated that the internal physical properties of a single simulated galaxy contain a significant amount of cosmological information. These physical properties, however, cannot be directly measured from observations. In this work, we present how we can go beyond theoretical demonstrations to infer cosmological constraints from actual galaxy observables (e.g. optical photometry) using neural density estimation and the CAMELS suite of hydrodynamical simulations. We find that the cosmological information in the photometry of a single galaxy is limited. However, we combine the constraining power of photometry from many galaxies using hierarchical population inference and place significant cosmological constraints. With the observed photometry of $\sim$20,000 NASA-Sloan Atlas galaxies, we constrain $\Omega_m = 0.323^{+0.075}_{-0.095}$ and $\sigma_8 = 0.799^{+0.088}_{-0.085}$., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJL, comments welcome

Recent work has pointed out the potential existence of a tight relation between the cosmological parameter $\Omega_{\rm m}$, at fixed $\Omega_{\rm b}$, and the properties of individual galaxies in state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. In this paper, we investigate whether such a relation also holds for galaxies from simulations run with a different code that made use of a distinct subgrid physics: Astrid. We find that also in this case, neural networks are able to infer the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$ with a $\sim10\%$ precision from the properties of individual galaxies while accounting for astrophysics uncertainties as modeled in CAMELS. This tight relationship is present at all considered redshifts, $z\leq3$, and the stellar mass, the stellar metallicity, and the maximum circular velocity are among the most important galaxy properties behind the relation. In order to use this method with real galaxies, one needs to quantify its robustness: the accuracy of the model when tested on galaxies generated by codes different from the one used for training. We quantify the robustness of the models by testing them on galaxies from four different codes: IllustrisTNG, SIMBA, Astrid, and Magneticum. We show that the models perform well on a large fraction of the galaxies, but fail dramatically on a small fraction of them. We discover analytic equations that can infer the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$ from the positions and velocity moduli of halo and galaxy catalogues. The equations are derived by combining a tailored graph neural network (GNN) architecture with symbolic regression. We first train the GNN on dark matter halos from Gadget N-body simulations to perform field-level likelihood-free inference, and show that our model can infer $\Omega_{\rm m}$ with $\sim6\%$ accuracy from halo catalogues of thousands of N-body simulations run with six different codes: Abacus, CUBEP$^3$M, Gadget, Enzo, PKDGrav3, and Ramses. By applying symbolic regression to the different parts comprising the GNN, we derive equations that can predict $\Omega_{\rm m}$ from halo catalogues of simulations run with all of the above codes with accuracies similar to those of the GNN. We show that by tuning a single free parameter, our equations can also infer the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$ from galaxy catalogues of thousands of state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations of the CAMELS project, each with a different astrophysics model, run with five distinct codes that employ different subgrid physics: IllustrisTNG, SIMBA, Astrid, Magneticum, SWIFT-EAGLE. Furthermore, the equations also perform well when tested on galaxy catalogues from simulations covering a vast region in parameter space that samples variations in 5 cosmological and 23 astrophysical parameters. We train graph neural networks to perform field-level likelihood-free inference using galaxy catalogs from state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations of the CAMELS project. Our models are rotational, translational, and permutation invariant and do not impose any cut on scale. From galaxy catalogs that only contain $3$D positions and radial velocities of $\sim 1, 000$ galaxies in tiny $(25~h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$ volumes our models can infer the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$ with approximately $12$ % precision. More importantly, by testing the models on galaxy catalogs from thousands of hydrodynamic simulations, each having a different efficiency of supernova and AGN feedback, run with five different codes and subgrid models - IllustrisTNG, SIMBA, Astrid, Magneticum, SWIFT-EAGLE -, we find that our models are robust to changes in astrophysics, subgrid physics, and subhalo/galaxy finder. Furthermore, we test our models on $1,024$ simulations that cover a vast region in parameter space - variations in $5$ cosmological and $23$ astrophysical parameters - finding that the model extrapolates really well. Our results indicate that the key to building a robust model is the use of both galaxy positions and velocities, suggesting that the network have likely learned an underlying physical relation that does not depend on galaxy formation and is valid on scales larger than $\sim10~h^{-1}{\rm kpc}$., Comment: 34 pages, 12 figures. When the first galaxies formed and starlight escaped into the intergalactic medium to reionize it, galaxy formation and reionization were both highly inhomogeneous in time and space, and fully-coupled by mutual feedback. To show how this imprinted the UV luminosity function (UVLF) of reionization-era galaxies, we use our large-scale, radiation-hydrodynamics simulation CoDa II to derive the time- and space-varying halo mass function and UVLF, from $z\simeq6$-15. That UVLF correlates strongly with local reionization redshift: earlier-reionizing regions have UVLFs that are higher, more extended to brighter magnitudes, and flatter at the faint end than later-reionizing regions observed at the same $z$. In general, as a region reionizes, the faint-end slope of its local UVLF flattens, and, by $z=6$ (when reionization ended), the global UVLF, too, exhibits a flattened faint-end slope, `rolling-over' at $M_\text{UV}\gtrsim-17$. CoDa II's UVLF is broadly consistent with cluster-lensed galaxy observations of the Hubble Frontier Fields at $z=6$-8, including the faint end, except for the faintest data point at $z=6$, based on one galaxy at $M_\text{UV}=-12.5$. According to CoDa II, the probability of observing the latter is $\sim5\%$. However, the effective volume searched at this magnitude is very small, and is thus subject to significant cosmic variance. We train graph neural networks on halo catalogues from Gadget N-body simulations to perform field-level likelihood-free inference of cosmological parameters. The catalogues contain $\lesssim$5,000 halos with masses $\gtrsim 10^{10}~h^{-1}M_\odot$ in a periodic volume of $(25~h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$; every halo in the catalogue is characterized by several properties such as position, mass, velocity, concentration, and maximum circular velocity. Our models, built to be permutationally, translationally, and rotationally invariant, do not impose a minimum scale on which to extract information and are able to infer the values of $\Omega_{\rm m}$ and $\sigma_8$ with a mean relative error of $\sim6\%$, when using positions plus velocities and positions plus masses, respectively. More importantly, we find that our models are very robust: they can infer the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$ and $\sigma_8$ when tested using halo catalogues from thousands of N-body simulations run with five different N-body codes: Abacus, CUBEP$^3$M, Enzo, PKDGrav3, and Ramses. Surprisingly, the model trained to infer $\Omega_{\rm m}$ also works when tested on thousands of state-of-the-art CAMELS hydrodynamic simulations run with four different codes and subgrid physics implementations. Using halo properties such as concentration and maximum circular velocity allow our models to extract more information, at the expense of breaking the robustness of the models. We present a new numerical scheme which combines the Spectral Difference (SD) method up to arbitrary high order with \emph{a-posteriori} limiting using the classical MUSCL-Hancock scheme as fallback scheme. It delivers very accurate solutions in smooth regions of the flow, while capturing sharp discontinuities without spurious oscillations. We exploit the strict equivalence between the SD scheme and a Finite-Volume (FV) scheme based on the SD control volumes to enable a straightforward limiting strategy. At the end of each stage of our high-order time-integration ADER scheme, we check if the high-order solution is admissible under a number of numerical and physical criteria. If not, we replace the high-order fluxes of the troubled cells by fluxes from our robust second-order MUSCL fallback scheme. We apply our method to a suite of test problems for the 1D and 2D Euler equations. We demonstrate that this combination of SD and ADER provides a virtually arbitrary high order of accuracy, while at the same time preserving good sub-element shock capturing capabilities., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The formation and evolution of galaxies have proved sensitive to the inclusion of stellar feedback, which is therefore crucial to any successful galaxy model. We present INFERNO, a new model for hydrodynamic simulations of galaxies, which incorporates resolved stellar objects with star-by-star calculations of when and where the injection of enriched material, momentum, and energy takes place. INFERNO treats early stellar kinematics to include phenomena such as walkaway and runaway stars. We employ this innovative model on simulations of a dwarf galaxy and demonstrate that our physically motivated stellar feedback model can drive vigorous galactic winds. This is quantified by mass and metal loading factors in the range of $10-100$, and an energy loading factor close to unity. Outflows are established close to the disc, are highly multi-phase, spanning almost $8$ orders of magnitude in temperature, and with a clear dichotomy between mass ejected in cold, slow-moving ($T\lesssim5\times10^4\,{\rm K}$, $v<100\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$) gas and energy ejected in hot, fast-moving ($T>10^6\,{\rm K}$, $v>100\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$) gas. In contrast to massive disc galaxies, we find a surprisingly weak impact of the early stellar kinematics, with runaway stars having little to no effect on our results, despite exploding in diffuse gas outside the dense star-forming gas, as well as outside the galactic disc entirely. We demonstrate that this weak impact in dwarf galaxies stems from a combination of strong feedback and a porous interstellar medium, which obscure any unique signatures that runaway stars provide., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We present a suite of high-resolution simulations of an isolated dwarf galaxy using four different hydrodynamical codes: {\sc Gizmo}, {\sc Arepo}, {\sc Gadget}, and {\sc Ramses}. All codes adopt the same physical model which includes radiative cooling, photoelectric heating, star formation, and supernova (SN) feedback. Individual SN explosions are directly resolved without resorting to sub-grid models, eliminating one of the major uncertainties in cosmological simulations. We find reasonable agreement on the time-averaged star formation rates as well as the joint density-temperature distributions between all codes. However, the Lagrangian codes show significantly burstier star formation, larger supernova-driven bubbles, and stronger galactic outflows compared to the Eulerian code. This is caused by the behavior in the dense, collapsing gas clouds when the Jeans length becomes unresolved: gas in Lagrangian codes collapses to much higher densities than in Eulerian codes, as the latter is stabilized by the minimal cell size. Therefore, more of the gas cloud is converted to stars and SNe are much more clustered in the Lagrangian models, amplifying their dynamical impact. The differences between Lagrangian and Eulerian codes can be reduced by adopting a higher star formation efficiency in Eulerian codes, which significantly enhances SN clustering in the latter. Numerical simulations of magneto-convection have greatly expanded our understanding of stellar interiors and stellar magnetism. Recently, fully compressible hydrodynamical simulations of full-star models have demonstrated the feasibility of studying the excitation and propagation of pressure and internal gravity waves in stellar interiors, which would allow for a direct comparison with asteroseismological measurements. However, the impact of magnetic fields on such waves has not been taken into account yet in three-dimensional simulations. We conduct a proof of concept for the realization of three-dimensional, fully compressible, magneto-hydrodynamical numerical simulations of stellar interiors with the RAMSES code. We adapted the RAMSES code to deal with highly subsonic turbulence, typical of stellar convection, by implementing a well-balanced scheme in the numerical solver. We then ran and analyzed three-dimensional hydrodynamical and magneto-hydrodynamical simulations with different resolutions of a plane-parallel convective envelope on a Cartesian grid. Both hydrodynamical and magneto-hydrodynamical simulations develop a quasi-steady, turbulent convection layer from random density perturbations introduced over the initial profiles. The convective flows are characterized by small-amplitude fluctuations around the hydrodynamical equilibrium of the stellar interior, which is preserved over the whole simulation time. Using our compressible well-balanced scheme, we were able to model flows with Mach numbers as low as $\mathcal{M} \sim 10^{-3}$, but even lower Mach number flows are possible in principle. In the magneto-hydrodynamical runs, we observe an exponential growth of magnetic energy consistent with the action of a small-scale dynamo. (Abridged), Comment: accepted for publication on A&A

An initially planar shock wave propagating into a medium of non-uniform density will be perturbed, leading to the generation of post-shock velocity perturbations. Using numerical simulations we study this phenomenon in the case of highly-non-uniform density (order-unity normalized variance, $\sigma_{\rho}/\overline{\rho} \sim 1$) and strong shocks (shock Mach numbers $\overline{M}_s \gtrsim 10$). This leads to a highly disrupted shock and a turbulent post-shock flow. We simulate this interaction for a range of shock drives and initial density configurations meant to mimic those which might be presently achieved in experiments. Theoretical considerations lead to scaling relations, which are found to reasonably predict the post-shock turbulence properties. The turbulent velocity dispersion and turbulent Mach number are found to depend on the pre-shock density dispersion and shock speed in a manner consistent with the linear Richtymer-Meshkov instability prediction. We also show a dependence of the turbulence generation on the scale of density perturbations. The post-shock pressure and density, which can be substantially reduced relative to the unperturbed case, are found to be reasonably predicted by a simplified analysis that treats the extended shock transition region as a single normal shock., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

Turbulence in the interstellar medium (ISM) is crucial in the process of star formation. Shocks produced by supernova explosions, jets, radiation from massive stars, or galactic spiral-arm dynamics are amongst the most common drivers of turbulence in the ISM. However, it is not fully understood how shocks drive turbulence, in particular whether shock driving is a more solenoidal(rotational, divergence-free) or a more compressive (potential, curl-free) mode of driving turbulence. The mode of turbulence driving has profound consequences for star formation, with compressive driving producing three times larger density dispersion, and an order of magnitude higher star formation rate than solenoidal driving. Here, we use hydrodynamical simulations of a shock inducing turbulent motions in a structured, multi-phase medium. This is done in the context of a laser-induced shock, propagating into a foam material, in preparation for an experiment to be performed at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Specifically, we analyse the density and velocity distributions in the shocked turbulent medium, and measure the turbulence driving parameter $b=(\sigma^{2 \Gamma}_{\rho /\langle \rho \rangle}-1)^{1/2} (1-\sigma_{\rho \langle \rho \rangle}^{-2})^{-1/2}\mathcal{M}^{-1}\Gamma^{-1/2}$ with the density dispersion $\sigma_{\rho / \langle \rho \rangle}$, the turbulent Mach number $\mathcal{M}$, and the polytropic exponent $\Gamma$. Purely solenoidal and purely compressive driving correspond to $b \sim 1/3$ and $b \sim 1$, respectively. Using simulations in which a shock is driven into a multi-phase medium with structures of different sizes and $\Gamma < 1$, we find $b \sim 1$ for all cases, showing that shock-driven turbulence is consistent with strongly compressive driving., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures

Supernova ejecta and stellar winds are believed to produce interstellar dust grains with relatively large sizes. Smaller grains can be produced via the shattering of large grains that have been stochastically accelerated. To understand this stochastic acceleration, we have implemented novel magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)-particle-in-cell(PIC) methods into the astrophysical fluid code RAMSES. We treat dust grains as a set of massive ``superparticles'' that experience aerodynamic drag and Lorentz force. We subject our code to a range of numerical tests designed to validate our method in different physical conditions, as well as to illustrate possible mechanisms by which grains can be accelerated. As a final test as well as a foundation for future work, we present the results of decaying dusty MHD turbulence simulations with grain parameters chosen to resemble 1-2 $\mu$m grains in typical cold neutral medium conditions. We find that in these conditions, these grains can be effectively accelerated to well beyond their shattering velocities. This is true for both electrically charged and neutral grains. While the peak of the gas-grain relative drift velocity distribution is higher for neutral grains, the drift velocity distribution of charged grains exhibits an extended exponential tail out to much greater velocities. Even so, the shapes of the distributions are such that the extra gas-grain coupling provided by the Lorentz force offers grains relative protection from shattering. Recent determinations of the mean free path of ionising photons (mfp) in the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $\rm z=6$ are lower than many theoretical predictions. To gain insight into this issue, we investigate the evolution of the mfp in our new massive fully coupled radiation hydrodynamics cosmological simulation of reionization: Cosmic Dawn III (CoDaIII). CoDaIII's scale ($\rm 94^3 \, cMpc^3$) and resolution ($\rm 8192^3$ grid) make it particularly suitable to study the evolution of the IGM during Reionization. The simulation was performed with RAMSES-CUDATON on Summit, and used 131072 processors coupled to 24576 GPUs, making it the largest Reionization simulation, and largest RAMSES simulation ever performed. A superior agreement with global constraints on Reionization is obtained in CoDaIII over CoDaII especially for the evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction and the cosmic photo-ionization rate, thanks to an improved calibration, later end of reionization ($\rm z=5.6$), and higher spatial resolution. Analyzing the mfp, we find that CoDaIII reproduces the most recent observations very well, from $\rm z=6$ to $\rm z=4.6$. We show that the distribution of the mfp in CoDaIII is bimodal, with short (neutral) and long (ionized) mfp modes, respectively, due to the patchiness of reionization and the co-existence of neutral versus ionized regions during Reionization. The neutral mode peaks at sub-kpc to kpc scales of mfp, while the ionized mode peak evolves from $\rm 0.1 Mpc/h$ at $\rm z=7$ to $\sim 10$ Mpc/h at $\rm z=5.2$. Computing the mfp as the average of the ionized mode provides the best match to the recent observational determinations. We investigate the evolution of the dark matter density profiles of the most massive galaxy clusters in the Universe. Using a `zoom-in' procedure on a large suite of cosmological simulations of total comoving volume of $3\,(h^{-1}\,\rm Gpc)^3$, we study the 25 most massive clusters in four redshift slices from $z\sim 1$ to the present. The minimum mass is $M_{500} > 5.5 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ at $z=1$. Each system has more than two million particles within $r_{500}$. Once scaled to the critical density at each redshift, the dark matter profiles within $r_{500}$ are strikingly similar from $z\sim1$ to the present day, exhibiting a low dispersion of 0.15 dex, and showing little evolution with redshift in the radial logarithmic slope and scatter. They have the running power law shape typical of the NFW-type profiles, and their inner structure, resolved to $3.8\,h^{-1}$ comoving kpc at $z=1$, shows no signs of converging to an asymptotic slope. Galaxies can be characterized by many internal properties such as stellar mass, gas metallicity, and star-formation rate. We quantify the amount of cosmological and astrophysical information that the internal properties of individual galaxies and their host dark matter halos contain. We train neural networks using hundreds of thousands of galaxies from 2,000 state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations with different cosmologies and astrophysical models of the CAMELS project to perform likelihood-free inference on the value of the cosmological and astrophysical parameters. We find that knowing the internal properties of a single galaxy allow our models to infer the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$, at fixed $\Omega_{\rm b}$, with a $\sim10\%$ precision, while no constraint can be placed on $\sigma_8$. Our results hold for any type of galaxy, central or satellite, massive or dwarf, at all considered redshifts, $z\leq3$, and they incorporate uncertainties in astrophysics as modeled in CAMELS. However, our models are not robust to changes in subgrid physics due to the large intrinsic differences the two considered models imprint on galaxy properties. We find that the stellar mass, stellar metallicity, and maximum circular velocity are among the most important galaxy properties to determine the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$. We believe that our results can be explained taking into account that changes in the value of $\Omega_{\rm m}$, or potentially $\Omega_{\rm b}/\Omega_{\rm m}$, affect the dark matter content of galaxies. That effect leaves a distinct signature in galaxy properties to the one induced by galactic processes. By means of high resolution hydrodynamical, three-dimensional calculations with nested-meshes, we evaluate the eccentricity reached by a low-mass, luminous planet embedded in an inviscid disc with constant thermal diffusivity and subjected to thermal forces. We find that a cell size of at most one tenth of the size of the region heated by the planet is required to get converged results. When the planet's luminosity is supercritical, we find that it reaches an eccentricity of order $10^{-2}$--$10^{-1}$, which increases with the luminosity and broadly scales with the disc's aspect ratio. Restricting our study to the case of pebble accretion, we incorporate to our model the dependence of the accretion rate of pebbles on the eccentricity. There is therefore a feedback between eccentricity, which determines the accretion rate and hence the planet's luminosity, and the luminosity, which yields the eccentricity attained through thermal forces. We solve for the steady state eccentricity and study how this quantity depends on the disc's turbulence strength parameter $\alpha_z$, on the dimensionless stopping time of the pebbles $\tau_s$, on the inward mass flux of pebbles and on the headwind (the difference between the gas velocity and the Keplerian velocity). We find that in general low-mass planets (up to a few Earth masses) reach eccentricities comparable to the disc's aspect ratio, or a sizeable fraction of the latter. Eccentric, low-mass protoplanets should therefore be the norm rather than the exception, even if they orbit far from other planets or from large scale disturbances in the disc.

Magnetic fields have been included in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation only recently, due to advances in numerical techniques and a better understanding of the galaxy formation physics. In this paper, we develop a new subgrid model for the turbulent dynamo that takes place in the supersonic interstellar medium in star-forming galaxies. It is based on a mean-field approach that computes the turbulent kinetic energy at unresolved scales (the so-called subgrid scales) and modifies the induction equation to account for the corresponding $\alpha$ dynamo. Our subgrid model depends on one free parameter, the quenching parameter, that controls the saturation of the subgrid dynamo. Thanks to this mean-field approach, we can now model the fast amplification of the magnetic field inside turbulent star-forming galaxies, without relying on artificially strong initial fields or without using prohibitively expensive high-resolution simulations. We show that the evolution of the magnetic field in our zoom-in Milky Way-like galaxy is consistent with a simple picture, in which the field is in equipartition with the turbulent kinetic energy inside the star-forming disc, with a field strength around 10 $\mu$G at low redshift, while at the same time strong galactic outflows fill the halo with a slightly weaker magnetic field, whose strength (10 nG) is consistent will the ideal MHD dilution factor. Our results are in good agreement with recent theoretical and numerical predictions. We also compare our simulation with Faraday depth observations at both low and high redshift, seeing overall good agreement with some caveats. Our model naturally predicts stronger magnetic fields at high redshift (around 100 $\mu$G in the galaxy and 1 $\mu$G in the halo), but also stronger depolarisation effects due to stronger turbulence at early time., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We implement EuclidEmulator (version 1), an emulator for the non-linear correction of the matter power spectrum, into the MCMC forecasting code MontePython. We compare the performance of Halofit, HMCode, and EuclidEmulator1, both at the level of power spectrum prediction and at the level of posterior probability distributions of the cosmological parameters, for different cosmological models and different galaxy power spectrum wave number cut-offs. We confirm that the choice of the power spectrum predictor has a non-negligible effect on the computed sensitivities when doing cosmological parameter forecasting, even for a conservative wave number cut-off of $0.2\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. We find that EuclidEmulator1 is on average up to $17\%$ more sensitive to the cosmological parameters than the other two codes, with the most significant improvements being for the Hubble parameter of up to $42\%$ and the equation of state of dark energy of up to $26\%$, depending on the case. In addition, we point out that the choice of the power spectrum predictor contributes to the risk of computing a significantly biased mean cosmology when doing parameter estimations. For the four tested scenarios we find biases, averaged over the cosmological parameters, of between 0.5 and 2$\sigma$ (from below $1\sigma$ up to $6\sigma$ for individual parameters). This paper provides a proof of concept that this risk can be mitigated by taking a well-tailored theoretical uncertainty into account as this allows to reduce the bias by a factor of 2 to 5, depending on the case under consideration, while keeping posterior credibility contours small: the standard deviations are amplified by a factor of $\leq1.4$ in all cases., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures

ALMA observations of $z>6$ galaxies have revealed abnormally high [OIII]$_{\rm 88\mu m}$/[CII]$_{\rm 158\mu m}$ ratios and [CII]$_{\rm 158\mu m}$ deficits compared to local galaxies. Numerous solutions have been proposed including differences in C and O abundance ratios, observational bias, and differences in ISM properties. In order to elucidate the underlying physics that drives this high-redshift phenomenon, we employ SPHINX$^{20}$, a state-of-the-art, cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulation, that resolves detailed ISM properties of thousands of galaxies in the epoch of reionization. We find that the observed $z>6$ [OIII]-SFR and [CII]-SFR relations can only be reproduced when the C/O abundance ratio is $\sim8\times$ lower than Solar and the total metal production is $\sim4\times$ higher than that of a Kroupa IMF. This implies that high-redshift galaxies are potentially primarily enriched by low-metallicity core-collapse supernovae with a more top-heavy IMF. As AGB stars and type-Ia supernova begin to contribute to the galaxy metallicity, both the [CII]-SFR and [CII] luminosity functions are predicted to converge to observed values at $z\sim4.5$. While we demonstrate that ionisation parameter, LyC escape fraction, ISM gas density, and CMB attenuation all drive galaxies towards higher [OIII]/[CII], observed values at $z>6$ can only be reproduced with substantially lower C/O abundances compared to Solar. The combination of [CII] and [OIII] can be used to predict the values of ionisation parameter, ISM gas density, and LyC escape fraction and we provide estimates of these quantities for nine observed $z>6$ galaxies. Finally, we demonstrate that [OI]$_{\rm 63\mu m}$ can be used as a replacement for [CII] in high-redshift galaxies where [CII] is unobserved and argue that more observation time should be used to target [OI] at $z>6$. We present a suite of high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations to $z=4$ of a $10^{12}\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ halo at $z=0$, obtained using seven contemporary astrophysical simulation codes widely used in the numerical galaxy formation community. Physics prescriptions for gas cooling, heating, and star formation, are similar to the ones used in our previous {\it AGORA} disk comparison but now account for the effects of cosmological processes. In this work, we introduce the most careful comparison yet of galaxy formation simulations run by different code groups, together with a series of four calibration steps each of which is designed to reduce the number of tunable simulation parameters adopted in the final run. After all the participating code groups successfully completed the calibration steps, we reach a suite of cosmological simulations with similar mass assembly histories down to $z=4$. With numerical accuracy that resolves the internal structure of a target halo, we find that the codes overall agree well with one another in e.g., gas and stellar properties, but also show differences in e.g., circumgalactic medium properties. We argue that, if adequately tested in accordance with our proposed calibration steps and common parameters, the results of high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations can be robust and reproducible. New code groups are invited to join this comparison by generating equivalent models by adopting the common initial conditions, the common easy-to-implement physics package, and the proposed calibration steps. We address the puzzling observational indications for very "cold" galactic discs at redshifts $z \gtrsim 3$, an epoch when discs are expected to be highly perturbed. Using a high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulation, we identify such a cold disc at $z\sim 3.5$, with a rotation velocity to velocity dispersion ratio of $v_\phi/\sigma_r \simeq 5$ for the total gas. It forms as a result of a period of intense accretion of co-planar, co-rotating gas via cold cosmic-web streams. This thin disc survives for $\sim 5$ orbital periods, after which it is disrupted by mergers and counter-rotating streams, longer but consistent with our estimate that a galaxy of this mass ($M_\star\sim10^{10}\mathrm{M_\odot}$) typically survives merger-driven spin flips for $\sim 2-3$ orbital periods. We find that $v_\phi/\sigma_r$ is highly sensitive to the tracer used to perform the kinematic analysis. While it is $v_\phi/\sigma_r \simeq 3.5$ for atomic HI gas, it is $v_\phi/\sigma_r \simeq 8$ for molecular CO and H$_2$. This reflects the confinement of molecular gas to cold, dense clouds that reside near the disc mid-plane, while the atomic gas is spread into a turbulent and more extended thicker disc. The proposed mechanisms is a theoretical proposal that has not been validated yet with proper statistical measurements and it remains unclear whether it occurs frequently enough to explain the multiple discoveries of cold gas disks in high-z galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, published in MNRAS

We investigate the effect of the Biermann battery during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) using cosmological Adaptive Mesh Refinement simulations within the framework of the SPHINX project. We develop a novel numerical technique to solve for the Biermann battery term in the Constrained Transport method, preserving both the zero divergence of the magnetic field and the absence of Biermann battery for isothermal flows. The structure-preserving nature of our numerical method turns out to be very important to minimise numerical errors during validation tests of the propagation of a Str\"omgren sphere and of a Sedov blast wave. We then use this new method to model the evolution of a 2.5 and 5 co-moving Mpc cosmological box with a state-of-the-art galaxy formation model within the RAMSES code. Contrary to previous findings, we show that three different Biermann battery channels emerge: the first one is associated with linear perturbations before the EoR, the second one is the classical Biermann battery associated with reionization fronts during the EoR, and the third one is associated with strong, supernova-driven outflows. While the two former channels generate spontaneously volume-filling magnetic fields with a strength on the order or below $10^{-20}$ G, the latter, owing to the higher plasma temperature and a marginally-resolved turbulent dynamo, reaches a field strength as high as $10^{-18}$ G in the intergalactic medium around massive haloes., Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We present the first results from SPHINX-MHD, a suite of cosmological radiation-magnetohydrodynamics simulations designed to study the impact of primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) on galaxy formation and the evolution of the intergalactic medium during the epoch of reionization. The simulations are among the first to employ multi-frequency, on-the-fly radiation transfer and constrained transport ideal MHD in a cosmological context to simultaneously model the inhomogeneous process of reionization as well as the growth of PMFs. We run a series of $(5\,\text{cMpc})^3$ cosmological volumes, varying both the strength of the seed magnetic field ($B_0$) and its spectral index ($n_B$). We find that PMFs that have $n_B > -0.562\log_{10}\left(\frac{B_0}{1{\rm n}G}\right) - 3.35$ produce electron optical depths ($\tau_e$) that are inconsistent with CMB constraints due to the unrealistically early collapse of low-mass dwarf galaxies. For $n_B\geq-2.9$, our constraints are considerably tighter than the $\sim{\rm n}G$ constraints from Planck. PMFs that do not satisfy our constraints have little impact on the reionization history or the shape of the UV luminosity function. Likewise, detecting changes in the Lya forest due to PMFs will be challenging because photoionisation and photoheating efficiently smooth the density field. However, we find that the first absorption feature in the global 21cm signal is a sensitive indicator of the properties of the PMFs, even for those that satisfy our $\tau_e$ constraint. Furthermore, strong PMFs can marginally increase the escape of LyC photons by up to 25\% and shrink the effective radii of galaxies by $\sim44\%$ which could increase the completeness fraction of galaxy surveys. Finally, our simulations show that surveys with a magnitude limit of ${\rm M_{UV,1500}=-13}$ can probe the sources that provide the majority of photons for reionization out to $z=12$., Comment: 29 pages, 27 figures, accepted MNRAS

The high abundance of disc galaxies without a large central bulge challenges predictions of current hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation. We aim to shed light on the formation of these objects by studying the redshift and mass dependence of their intrinsic 3D shape distributions in the COSMOS galaxy survey below redshift $z=1.0$. This distribution is inferred from the observed distribution of 2D shapes, using a reconstruction method which we test using hydrodynamic simulations. Our tests reveal a moderate bias for the inferred average disc circularity and relative thickness, but a large bias on the dispersion of these quantities. Applying the reconstruction method on COSMOS data, we find variations of the average disc circularity and relative thickness with redshift of around $\sim1\%$ and $\sim10\%$ respectively, which is comparable to the error estimates on these quantities. The average relative disc thickness shows a significant mass dependence which can be accounted for by the scaling of disc radius with galaxy mass. We conclude that our data provides no evidence for a strong dependence of the average circularity and absolute thickness of disc-dominated galaxies on redshift and mass that is significant with respect to the statistical uncertainties in our analysis. These findings are expected in the absence of disruptive merging or feedback events that would affect galaxy shapes. They hence support a scenario where present-day discs form early ($z>1.0$) and subsequently undergo a tranquil evolution in isolation. We present a novel set of stellar feedback models, implemented in the moving-mesh code Arepo, designed for galaxy formation simulations with near-parsec (or better) resolution. These include explicit sampling of stars from the IMF, allowing feedback to be linked to individual massive stars, an improved method for the modelling of H II regions, photoelectric heating from a spatially varying FUV field and supernova feedback. We perform a suite of 32 simulations of isolated $M_\mathrm{vir} = 10^{10}\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ galaxies with a baryonic mass resolution of $20\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ in order to study the non-linear coupling of the different feedback channels. We find that photoionization and supernova feedback are both independently capable of regulating star formation to the same level, while photoelectric heating is inefficient. Photoionization produces a considerably smoother star formation history than supernovae. When all feedback channels are combined, the additional suppression of star formation rates is minor. However, outflow rates are substantially reduced relative to the supernova only simulations. We show that this is directly caused by a suppression of supernova clustering by the photoionization feedback, disrupting star forming clouds prior to the first supernovae. We demonstrate that our results are robust to variations of our star formation prescription, feedback models and the gas fraction of the disk. Our results also imply that the burstiness of star formation and the mass loading of outflows may be overestimated if the adopted star particle mass is considerably larger than the mass of individual stars because this imposes a minimum cluster size., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 37 pages (including appendices), 23 figures. We introduce a new method to mitigate numerical diffusion in adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulations of cosmological galaxy formation, and study its impact on a simulated dwarf galaxy as part of the 'EDGE' project. The target galaxy has a maximum circular velocity of 21 km/s but evolves in a region which is moving at up to 90 km/s relative to the hydrodynamic grid. In the absence of any mitigation, diffusion softens the filaments feeding our galaxy. As a result, gas is unphysically held in the circumgalactic medium around the galaxy for 320 Myr, delaying the onset of star formation until cooling and collapse eventually triggers an initial starburst at z=9. Using genetic modification, we produce 'velocity-zeroed' initial conditions in which the grid-relative streaming is strongly suppressed; by design, the change does not significantly modify the large scale structure or dark matter accretion history. The resulting simulation recovers a more physical, gradual onset of star formation starting at z=17. While the final stellar masses are nearly consistent ($4.8 \times 10^6\,M_\odot$ and $4.4\times 10^6\,M_\odot$ for unmodified and velocity-zeroed respectively), the dynamical and morphological structure of the z=0 dwarf galaxies are markedly different due to the contrasting histories. We study in this paper three variants of the high-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with Runge-Kutta (RK) time integration for the induction equation, analysing their ability to preserve the divergence free constraint of the magnetic field. To quantify divergence errors, we use a norm based on both a surface term, measuring global divergence errors, and a volume term, measuring local divergence errors. This leads us to design a new, arbitrary high-order numerical scheme for the induction equation in multiple space dimensions, based on a modification of the Spectral Difference (SD) method [1] with ADER time integration [2]. It appears as a natural extension of the Constrained Transport (CT) method. We show that it preserves $\nabla\cdot\vec{B}=0$ exactly by construction, both in a local and a global sense. We compare our new method to the 3 RKDG variants and show that the magnetic energy evolution and the solution maps of our new SD-ADER scheme are qualitatively similar to the RKDG variant with divergence cleaning, but without the need for an additional equation and an extra variable to control the divergence errors. The interplay of star formation and supernova (SN) feedback in galaxy formation is a key element for understanding galaxy evolution. Since these processes occur at small scales, it is necessary to have sub-grid models that recover their evolution and environmental effects at the scales reached by cosmological simulations. We simulate the same spiral galaxy inhabiting a Milky Way (MW) size halo in a cosmological environment changing the sub-grid models for SN feedback and star formation. We test combinations of the Schmidt law and a multi-freefall based star formation with delayed cooling feedback or mechanical feedback. We reach a resolution of 35 pc in a zoom-in box of 36 Mpc. For this, we use the code RAMSES with the implementation of gas turbulence in time and trace the local hydrodynamical features of the star-forming gas. Finally, we compare the galaxies at redshift 0 with global and interstellar medium observations in the MW and local spiral galaxies. The simulations show successful comparisons with observations. Nevertheless, diverse galactic morphologies are obtained from different numerical implementations. We highlight the importance of detailed modelling of the star formation and feedback processes, especially when increasing the resolution of simulations. Galactic outflows driven by stellar feedback are crucial for explaining the inefficiency of star formation in galaxies. Although strong feedback can promote the formation of galactic discs by limiting star formation at early times and removing low angular momentum gas, it is not understood how the same feedback can result in diverse objects such as elliptical galaxies or razor thin spiral galaxies. We investigate this problem using cosmological zoom-in simulations of two galaxies forming within $10^{12}~\mathrm{M_\odot}$ halos with almost identical mass accretion histories and halo spin parameters. However, the two resulting galaxies end up with very different bulge-to-disc ratios at $z = 0$. At $z>1.5$, the two galaxies feature a surface density of star formation $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}\simeq 10~\mathrm{M_\odot}~{\rm yr}^{-1}~{\rm kpc}^{-2}$, leading to strong outflows. After the last starburst episode, both galaxies feature a dramatic gaseous disc growth from 1~kpc to 5~kpc during 1~Gyr, a decisive event we dub "the Grand Twirl". After this event, the evolutionary tracks diverge strongly, with one galaxy ending up as a bulge-dominated galaxy, whereas the other ends up as a disc-dominated galaxy. The origins of this dichotomy are the angular momentum of the accreted gas, and whether it adds constructively to the initial disc angular momentum. The build-up of this extended disc leads to a rapid lowering of $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$ by over two orders of magnitude with $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} \lesssim 0.1~\mathrm{M_\odot}~{\rm yr}^{-1}~{\rm kpc}^{-2}$, in remarkable agreement with what is derived from Milky Way stellar populations. As a consequence, supernovae explosions are spread out and cannot launch galactic outflows anymore, allowing for the persistence of a thin, gently star forming, extended disc., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, published in MNRAS

Cosmic Dawn ("CoDa") II yields the first statistically-meaningful determination of the relative contribution to reionization by galaxies of different halo mass, from a fully-coupled radiation-hydrodynamics simulation of the epoch of reionization large enough ($\sim$ 100 Mpc) to model global reionization while resolving the formation of all galactic halos above $\sim 10^8 M_\odot$. Cell transmission inside high-mass haloes is bi-modal -- ionized cells are transparent, while neutral cells absorb the photons their stars produce - and the halo escape fraction $f_{esc}$ reflects the balance of star formation rate ("SFR") between these modes. The latter is increasingly prevalent at higher halo mass, driving down $f_{esc}$ (we provide analytical fits to our results), whereas halo escape luminosity, proportional to $f_{esc} \times$SFR, increases with mass. Haloes with dark matter masses within $6.10^{8} M_\odot < M_h < 3.10^{10} M_\odot$ produce $\sim 80$% of the escaping photons at z=7, when the Universe is 50% ionized, making them the main drivers of cosmic reionization. Less massive haloes, though more numerous, have low SFRs and contribute less than 10% of the photon budget then, despite their high $f_{esc}$. High mass haloes are too few and too opaque, contributing $<10$% despite their high SFRs. The dominant mass range is lower (higher) at higher (lower) redshift, as mass function and reionization advance together (e.g. at z$=8.5$, x$_{\rm HI}=0.9$, $M_h < 5.10^9 M_\odot$ haloes contributed $\sim$80%). As part of the AGORA High-resolution Galaxy Simulations Comparison Project (Kim et al. 2014, 2016) we have generated a suite of isolated Milky Way-mass galaxy simulations using 9 state-of-the-art gravito-hydrodynamics codes widely used in the numerical galaxy formation community. In these simulations we adopted identical galactic disk initial conditions, and common physics models (e.g., radiative cooling and ultraviolet background by a standardized package). Subgrid physics models such as Jeans pressure floor, star formation, supernova feedback energy, and metal production were carefully constrained. Here we release the simulation data to be freely used by the community. In this release we include the disk snapshots at 0 and 500Myr of evolution per each code as used in Kim et al. (2016), from simulations with and without star formation and feedback. An accurate modelling of baryonic feedback effects is required to exploit the full potential of future weak-lensing surveys such as Euclid or LSST. In this second paper in a series of two, we combine Euclid-like mock data of the cosmic shear power spectrum with an eROSITA X-ray mock of the cluster gas fraction to run a combined likelihood analysis including both cosmological and baryonic parameters. Following the first paper of this series, the baryonic effects (based on the baryonic correction model of Schneider et al. 2019) are included in both the tomographic power spectrum and the covariance matrix. However, this time we assume the more realistic case of a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology with massive neutrinos, and we consider several extensions of the currently favoured cosmological model. For the standard $\Lambda$CDM case, we show that including X-ray data reduces the uncertainties on the sum of the neutrino mass by $\sim30$ percent, while there is only a mild improvement on other parameters such as $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$. As extensions of $\Lambda$CDM, we consider the cases of a dynamical dark energy model (wCDM), a $f(R)$ gravity model (fRCDM), and a mixed dark matter model ($\Lambda$MDM) with both a cold and a warm/hot dark matter component. We find that combining weak lensing with X-ray data only leads to a mild improvement of the constraints on the additional parameters of wCDM, while the improvement is more substantial for both fRCDM and $\Lambda$MDM. Ignoring baryonic effects in the analysis pipeline leads to significant false-detections of either phantom dark energy or a light subdominant dark matter component. Overall we conclude that for all cosmologies considered, a general parametrisation of baryonic effects is both necessary and sufficient to obtain tight constraints on cosmological parameters., Comment: Accepted version (JCAP)

Classical theories for the stellar initial mass function (IMF) predict a peak mass which scales with the properties of the molecular cloud. In this work, we explore a new theory proposed by Lee & Hennebelle (2018). The idea is that the tidal field around first Larson cores prevents the formation of other collapsing clumps within a certain radius. The protostar can then freely accrete the gas within this radius. This leads to a peak mass of roughly $10 \, M_{\mathrm{1LC}}$, independent of the parent cloud properties. Using simple analytical arguments, we derive a collapse condition for clumps located close to a protostar. We then study the tidal field and the corresponding collapse condition using a series of numerical simulations. We find that the tidal field around protostars is indeed strong enough to prevent clumps from collapsing unless they have high enough densities. For each newly formed protostar, we determine the region in which tidal screening is dominant. We call this the tidal bubble. The mass within this bubble is our estimate for the final mass of the star. Using this formalism, we are able to construct a very good prediction for the final IMF in our simulations. Not only do we correctly predict the peak, but we are also able to reproduced the high and low mass end of the IMF. We conclude that tidal forces are important in determining the final mass of a star and might be the dominant effect in setting the peak mass of the IMF.

Baryonic feedback effects lead to a suppression of the weak lensing angular power spectrum on small scales. The poorly constrained shape and amplitude of this suppression is an important source of uncertainties for upcoming cosmological weak lensing surveys such as Euclid or LSST. In this first paper in a series of two, we use simulations to build a Euclid-like tomographic mock data-set for the cosmic shear power spectrum and the corresponding covariance matrix, which are both corrected for baryonic effects following the baryonification method of Schneider et al. (2019). In addition, we develop an emulator to obtain fast predictions of the baryonic power suppression, allowing us to perform a likelihood inference analysis for a standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology with both cosmological and astrophysical parameters. Our main findings are the following: (i) ignoring baryonic effects leads to a greater than 5$\sigma$ bias on the cosmological parameters $\Omega_m$ and $\sigma_8$; (ii) restricting the analysis to the largest scales, that are mostly unaffected by baryons, makes the bias disappear, but results in a blow-up of the $\Omega_m$-$\sigma_8$ contour area by more than a factor of 10; (iii) ignoring baryonic effects on the covariance matrix does not significantly affect cosmological parameter estimates; (iv) while the baryonic suppression is mildly cosmology dependent, this effect does not noticeably modify the posterior contours. Overall, we conclude that including baryonic uncertainties in terms of nuisance parameters results in unbiased and surprisingly tight constraints on cosmology., Comment: Accepted version (JCAP)
