Moreover, as compared with eosinophilic asthma, non-eosinophilic asthma less frequently benefits from the latest therapeutic advances. This study aimed to highlight differences between non-eosinophilic and eosinophilic asthma as they may help the development of new therapeutic agents.Patients and Methods: Data from 1075 adult patients with severe asthma (GINA treatment: 4/5) collected during the cross-sectional non-interventional FASE-CPHG study were analyzed. Two groups of patients (EOS-/EOS+) were constituted based on blood eosinophil counts (cutoff value: 300 G/l). Characteristics of EOS- (N = 500) and EOS+ (N = 575) patients were described; EOS- patients were also described according to their allergic profile based on skin allergy or allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) assays (cutoff value: 150 IU/mL).Results: Percentages of patients with obesity (29%), allergen sensitization (57%), or ≥ 2 annual exacerbations in the last 12 months (68%) were similar in both groups. As compared with EOS+ patients, EOS- patients less frequently reported chronic rhinitis (41.1% vs 50.5%, p < 0.01) or nasal polyposis (13.6% vs 27.5%, p < 0.01), and more frequently reported GERD (45.2% vs 37.1%, p < 0.01), anxiety (45.5% vs 38.1%, p = 0.01), or depression (18.3% vs 13.3%, p = 0.02). EOS- patients had lower serum total IgE levels (median: 158 vs 319 IU/mL, p < 0.01) and were less frequently treated with long-term oral corticosteroid therapy (16.0% vs 23.7%; p < 0.01). Their asthma was more frequently uncontrolled (48% vs 40%, p < 0.01). Similar results were found with a cutoff value for blood eosinophil counts at 150 G/l. EOS- patients with allergic profile less frequently reported high serum IgE levels (35.6% vs 57.9%, p < 0.01). EOS- and EOS+ patients treated with long-term oral corticosteroids had similar profiles.Conclusion: In our patients with severe asthma, EOS- asthma was approximately as frequent as EOS+ asthma; EOS- asthma was frequently poorly controlled or uncontrolled, confirming the need for a better management. Abstract

Trees structure the Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations 1–6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth’s 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories 7, we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Although they do not detract from the importance of rare species, our results open new opportunities to understand the world’s most diverse forests, including modelling their response to environmental change, by focusing on the common species that constitute the majority of their trees.

Abstract

Background During the Covid-19 pandemic fake news has been circulating impacting on the general population’s opinion about a vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2. Health literacy measures the capacity of navigating health information. Methods We used data from a prospective national online cohort of 1647 participants. Descriptive statistics, Chi2 and ANOVA independence tests and two multivariable multinomial regression models were performed. Interactions between each variable were tested. Results Detection of fake news and health literacy scores were associated with intention to get vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 (p Conclusions To promote acceptance of a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, it is recommended to increase individuals’ ability to detect fake news and health literacy through education and communication programs.

Abstract

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] was domesticated in China, and cultivated landraces were initially distributed throughout Asia and more recently extended to Europe and America. Previous studies of genetic diversity suggest a strong genetic bottleneck between Asian and North American soybean genetic pools. However, little is known about the potentially useful genetic diversity present in European soybean germplasm. We evaluated genetic diversity by phenotypic characterization and by comparing nuclear and cytoplasmic microsatellites in 301 genotypes of an INRA soybean collection with those of 31 European breeding lines and 17 ancestors from American cultivars (representing 83% of the North America diversity). We showed that the INRA collection contains 14 and 8% more diversity than the European breeding lines and American ancestors, respectively, based on Nei diversity (He). The genetic structure of this INRA collection does not correlate with either geographic origin or phenotypic differentiation. We generated a core collection composed of 50 accessions from the INRA collection and European breeding lines. This core collection contains 203 of the 226 microsatellite marker alleles available for this germplasm and is also representative of the diversity of morphological traits in temperate regions (maturity 000 to Ill), which will be useful for future breeding programs.

BACKGROUND: In asthma, short- and long-acting ß-agonists (SABAs and LABAs) should be used together with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), and regular use is inappropriate. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between patterns of use of therapy and asthma exacerbations (AEx). METHODS: Patients with asthma (6-40 years) were enrolled in France and the United Kingdom. Prescribing data, computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATIs), and text messages assessed medication use and AEx over a maximum period of 24 months. Generalized linear mixed models provided AEx risks associated with therapy. RESULTS: Among the 908 patients (median age: 20.0 years, 46.6% women, 24.5% children) answering a total of 4248 CATIs over 486 (±235) days, regular (ie, daily) use was more frequent for single LABAs and fixed dose combinations (FDCs) than for single ICS (75.6%, 70.1%, and 65.4% of investigated periods of use, respectively). Regular (ie, daily or almost daily) SABA use was observed for 21.1% of periods of use. Altogether, 265 patients (29.2%) experienced 1 or more AEx. The ORs for AEx risk related to regular vs no use of FDCs, single ICS, and single LABAs were 0.98 (95% CI = [0.73-1.33]), 0.90 (95% CI = [0.61-1.33]), and 1.29 (95% CI = [0.76-2.17]), respectively, after adjustment for cotherapy, sociodemographic, and disease characteristics. The OR was 2.09 (95% CI = [1.36-3.21]) in regular SABA users. CONCLUSION: Inhaled corticosteroids and FDCs were often used intermittently, whereas SABAs and LABAs could be used regularly, and exacerbations were frequent. Compared with non-users, the risk of exacerbation increased moderately under regular use of single LABAs, whereas it doubled, significantly, in regular SABA users, likely in relationship with poor overall asthma control.

CONCLUSIONS: Using carefully developed questionnaires and advanced psychometric analyses, this study suggests that involving practice nurses, making social expectations visible, and providing more training to enhance skills and confidence in asthma care delivery could enhance the amount and consistency of asthma primary care. This needs to be corroborated in a future intervention trial.

OBJECTIVE: This study presents the development and validation of MIS-A (Medication Intake Survey-Asthma), a new self-report instrument measuring key adherence properties during long-term asthma treatment. DESIGN: Within a longitudinal asthma cohort study in France and the United Kingdom, adult patients and caregivers of children responded to computer-assisted telephone interviews. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Scores for distinct adherence properties (taking adherence, correct dosing, therapeutic coverage, drug holidays, overuse) and composite measures were computed for several time intervals. We examined distributions, longitudinal variation, associations between adherence scores and concordance with adherence calculated from medication prescribing or dispensing records. RESULTS: Nine hundred and two participants reported on adherence to 4481 medications on 4140 occasions. About 59.47 and 70.36% revealed 1 week in the last 4 months. Adherence varied within patients during the follow-up (intra-class correlation = . 41-.71).
