Abstract

The new scientific decade (2023-2032) of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) aims at searching for sustainable solutions to undesired water conditions–whether it be too little, too much or too polluted. Many of the current issues originate from global change, while solutions to problems must embrace local understanding and context. The decade will explore the current water crises by searching for actionable knowledge within three themes: global and local interactions, sustainable solutions and innovative cross-cutting methods. We capitalise on previous IAHS Scientific Decades shaping a trilogy; from Hydrological Predictions (PUB) to Change and Interdisciplinarity (Panta Rhei) to Solutions (HELPING). The vision is to solve fundamental water-related environmental and societal problems by engaging with other disciplines and local stakeholders. The decade endorses mutual learning and co-creation to progress towards UN sustainable development goals. Hence, HELPING is a vehicle for putting science in action, driven by scientists working on local hydrology in coordination with local, regional, and global processes.

25. Technical note : Investigating the potential for smartphone-based monitoring of evapotranspiration and land surface energy-balance partitioning

Abstract

Evapotranspiration plays a key role in the terrestrial water cycle, climate extremes, and vegetation functioning. However, the understanding of spatio-temporal variability of evapotranspiration is limited by a lack of measurement techniques that are low cost and that can be applied anywhere at any time. Here we investigate the estimation of evapotranspiration and land surface energy-balance partitioning by only using observations made by smartphone sensors. Individual variables known to effect evapotranspiration as measured by smartphone sensors generally showed a high correlation with routine observations during a multiday field test. In combination with a simple multivariate regression model fitted on observed evapotranspiration, the smartphone observations had a mean RMSE of 0.10 and 0.05 mm h-1 during validation against lysimeter and eddy covariance observations, respectively. This is comparable to an error of 0.08 mm h-1 that is associated with estimating the eddy covariance ET from the lysimeter or vice versa. The results suggests that smartphone-based ET monitoring could provide a realistic and low-cost alternative for real-time ET estimation in the field.

26. Soil Moisture-Temperature Coupling Increases Population Exposure to Future Heatwaves

Abstract

Heatwaves have significant effects on ecosystems and human health. Human habitability is impacted severely as human exposure to heatwaves is projected to increase, however, the contribution of soil moisture effects to the increased exposure is unknown. We use data from four climate models, in which two experiments are used to isolate soil moisture effects and in this way to examine projected changes of soil moisture contributions to projected increases in heatwave events. Contributions from soil moisture to future population exposure to heatwaves are also investigated. With soil moisture effects combined with global warming, the longest yearly heatwaves are found to increase by up to 20 days, intensify by up to 2°C in mean temperature, with an increasing of frequency by 15% (the percentage relative to the total number of days for a year) over most mid-latitude land regions by 2040–2070 under the SSP585 high emissions scenario. Furthermore, soil moisture changes are found to have a significant role in projected increases of multiple heatwave characteristics regionally compared with the global land area and contribute to more global population exposed to heatwaves.

Abstract

Water-related conflicts in river catchments occur due to both internal and external pressures that affect catchment water availability. Lack of common understanding of human-water perspectives by catchment stakeholders increases the complexity of human-water issues at the river catchment scale. Among a range of participatory approaches, the development and use of serious games gained prominence as a tool to stimulate discussion and reflection among stakeholders about sustainable resource use and collective action. This study designed and implemented the ENGAGE (Exploring New Gaming Approach to Guide and Enlighten) game that mimics the dynamics observed during the dry season in the upper Ewaso Ngiro catchment, northwest of Mount Kenya. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential role of serious gaming in subsequent steps of strengthening stakeholder engagement (agenda setting, shared understanding, commitment to collective action, and means of implementation) toward addressing complex human-water challenges at the catchment scale. We assessed the type of decisions made during gameplay, the communication dynamics, the active participation, and the implication of decisions made on water availability. The results of three game sessions show that the ENGAGE game raised awareness and provided a recognizable hydrologic background to conflicts while guiding community discussions toward implementable decisions. The results revealed increasing active participation, knowledge gain, and use of plural pronouns and decreasing individual interests and conflicts among game participants. This study presents important implications for creating a collective basis for water management and can inform human-water policies and modification of the process behind water allocation rules in a river catchment.

Abstract

Heat extremes have severe implications for human health, ecosystems, and the initiation of wildfires. While they are mostly introduced by atmospheric circulation patterns, the intensity of heat extremes is modulated by terrestrial evaporation associated with soil moisture availability. Thereby, ecosystems provide evaporative cooling through plant transpiration and soil evaporation, which can be reduced under water stress. While it has been shown that regional ecosystem water limitation is projected to increase in the future, the respective repercussions on heat extremes remain unclear. In this study, we use projections from 12 Earth system models to show that projected changes in heat extremes are amplified by increasing ecosystem water limitation in regions across the globe. We represent the ecosystem water limitation with the ecosystem limitation index (ELI) and quantify temperature extremes through the differences between the warm-season mean and maximum temperatures. We identify hotspot regions in tropical South America and across Canada and northern Eurasia where relatively strong trends towards increased ecosystem water limitation jointly occur with amplifying heat extremes. This correlation is governed by the magnitude of the ELI trends and the present-day ELI which denotes the land–atmosphere coupling strength determining the temperature sensitivity to evaporative cooling. Many regions where ecosystem functioning is predominantly energy-limited or transitional in the present climate exhibit strong trends towards increasing the water limitation and simultaneously experience the largest increases in heat extremes. Sensitivity of temperature excess trends to ELI trends is highest in water-limited regions, such that in these regions relatively small ELI trends can amount to drastic temperature excess trends.
