Stacking van der Waals magnets holds promise for creating new hybrid materials with properties that do not exist in bulk materials. Here we investigate orthogonally twisted stacks of the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrSBr, aiming to exploit an extreme misalignment of magnetic anisotropy across the twisted interface.Using nitrogen-vacancy centre microscopy, we construct vector maps of the magnetisation, and track their evolution under an external field, in a range of twisted compensated and uncompensated configurations differing by the number of layers. We show that twisted stacking consistently modifies the local magnetic switching behaviour of constituent flakes, and that these modifications are spatially non-uniform. In the case of compensated component flakes (even number of layers), we demonstrate that the combination of dipolar coupling and stacking-induced strain can reduce the switching field by over an order of magnitude. Conversely, in uncompensated component flakes (odd number of layers), we observe indications of a non-zero interlayer exchange interaction between twisted flakes during magnetization reversal, which can persistently modify magnetic order. Optically addressable solid-state spins have been proposed as robust radiofrequency (RF)-optical transducers sensitive to a specific RF frequency tuned by an external static magnetic field, but often require precise field alignment with the system's symmetry axis. Here we introduce an isotropic solid-state spin system, namely weakly coupled spin pairs in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which acts as an RF-optical transducer independent of the direction of the tuning magnetic field, allowing greatly simplified experimental design. Using this platform, we first demonstrate a single-frequency RF receiver with frequency tunability from 0.1 to 19 GHz. We next demonstrate an instantaneous wideband RF spectrum analyser by applying a magnetic field gradient to encode RF frequency into spatial position. Finally, we utilise the spectrum analyser to detect free-space-transmitted RF signals matching the strength and frequency of typical Wi-Fi signals. This work exemplifies the unique capabilities of isotropic spins in hBN to operate as RF sensors, while circumventing the challenging requirement of precisely aligned magnetic fields facing conventional solid-state spins.

Optically addressable solid-state spins are an important platform for practical quantum technologies. Van der Waals material hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a promising host as it contains a wide variety of optical emitters, but thus far observations of addressable spins have been sparse, and most of them lacked a demonstration of coherent spin control. Here we demonstrate robust optical readout of spin pairs in hBN with emission wavelengths spanning from violet to the near-infrared. We find these broadband spin pairs exist naturally in a variety of hBN samples from bulk crystals to powders to epitaxial films, and can be coherently controlled across the entire wavelength range. Furthermore, we identify the optimal wavelengths for independent readout of spin pairs and boron vacancy spin defects co-existing in the same sample. Our results establish the ubiquity of the optically addressable spin pair system in hBN across a broad parameter space, making it a versatile playground for spin-based quantum technologies.

Widefield quantum diamond microscopy is a powerful technique for imaging magnetic fields with high sensitivity and spatial resolution. However, current methods to approach the ultimate spatial resolution ($<500\,$nm) are impractical for routine use as they require time-consuming fabrication or transfer techniques to precisely interface the diamond sensor with the sample to be imaged. To address this challenge, we have designed a co-axial sensor holder that enables simple, repeatable sensor-sample interfacing while being compatible with high numerical aperture (NA) optics. With our new design we demonstrate low standoffs $<500\,$nm with a millimetre sized sensor. We also explore the relationship between spatial resolution and NA spanning from 0.13 to 1.3. The spatial resolution shows good agreement with the optical diffraction limit at low NA but deviates at high NA, which is shown to be due to optical aberrations. Future improvements to our design are discussed, which should enable magnetic imaging with $<500\,$nm resolution in an accessible, easy-to-use instrument.

Optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) has been observed from emitters in hexagonal boron nitride across a broad range of wavelengths, but so far an understanding of their microscopic structure and the physical origin of ODMR has been lacking. Here we perform comprehensive measurements and modelling of the spin-resolved photodynamics of ensembles and single emitters, and uncover a universal model that accounts, and provides an intuitive physical explanation, for all key experimental features. The model assumes a pair of nearby point defects -- a primary optically active defect and a secondary defect. Charge transfer between the two defects creates a metastable weakly coupled spin pair with ODMR naturally arising from selection rules. Our optical-spin defect pair (OSDP) model resolves several previously open questions including the asymmetric envelope of the Rabi oscillations, the large variability in ODMR contrast amplitude and sign, and the wide spread in emission wavelength. It may also explain similar phenomena observed in other wide bandgap semiconductors such as GaN. The presented framework will be instrumental in guiding future theoretical and experimental efforts to study and engineer solid-state spin pairs and unlock their potential for quantum technology applications.

Magnetic imaging based on ensembles of diamond nitrogen-vacancy quantum sensors has emerged as a useful technique for the spatial characterisation of magnetic materials and current distributions. However, demonstrations have so far been restricted to laboratory-based experiments using relatively bulky apparatus and requiring manual handling of the diamond sensing element, hampering broader adoption of the technique. Here we present a simple, compact device that can be deployed outside a laboratory environment and enables robust, simplified operation. It relies on a specially designed sensor head that directly integrates the diamond sensor while incorporating a microwave antenna and all necessary optical components. This integrated sensor head is complemented by a small control unit and a laptop computer that displays the resulting magnetic image. We test the device by imaging a magnetic sample, demonstrating a spatial resolution of 4 $\mu$m over a field of view exceeding 1 mm, and a best sensitivity of 45 $\mu$T/$\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ per ($5\,\mu$m)$^2$ pixel. Our portable magnetic imaging instrument may find use in situations where taking the sample to be measured to a specialist lab is impractical or undesirable.

Boron vacancy centre ($V_{\rm B}^-$) ensembles in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have attracted recent interest for their potential as two-dimensional solid-state quantum sensors. Irradiation is necessary for $V_{\rm B}^-$ creation, however, to date only limited attention has been given to optimising the defect production process, especially in the case of bulk irradiation with high-energy particles, which offers scalability through the potential for creating ensembles in large volumes of material. Here we systematically investigate the effect of electron irradiation by varying the dose delivered to a range of hBN samples, which differ in their purity, and search for an optimum in measurement sensitivity. We find that moderate electron irradiation doses ($\approx 5\times 10^{18}$~cm$^{-2}$) appear to offer the best sensitivity, and also observe a dependence on the initial crystal purity. These results pave the way for the scalable and cost-effective production of hBN quantum sensors, and provide insight into the mechanisms limiting $V_{\rm B}^-$ spin properties., Comment: 8pages, 5 figures

Quantum Diamond Microscopy using Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) defects in diamond crystals has enabled the magnetic field imaging of a wide variety of nanoscale current profiles. Intimately linked with the imaging process is the problem of reconstructing the current density, which provides critical insight into the structure under study. This manifests as a non-trivial inverse problem of current reconstruction from noisy data, typically conducted via Fourier-based approaches. Learning algorithms and Bayesian methods have been proposed as novel alternatives for inference-based reconstructions. We study the applicability of Fourier-based and Bayesian methods for reconstructing two-dimensional current density maps from magnetic field images obtained from NV imaging. We discuss extensive numerical simulations to elucidate the performance of the reconstruction algorithms in various parameter regimes, and further validate our analysis via performing reconstructions on experimental data. Magnetic van der Waals materials are often proposed for use in future spintronic devices, aiming to leverage the combination of long-range magnetic order and near-atomic thinness to produce energy-efficient components. One class of material that has been discussed in this context are the iron halides FeCl$_2$ and FeBr$_2$, which are A-type antiferromagnets with strong uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. However, despite characterization of the bulk materials, the possibility for sustaining the magnetic behaviors that would underpin such applications in thin flakes has not been investigated. In this work, we use nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center microscopy to quantitatively image magnetism in individual exfoliated flakes of these iron halides, revealing the absence of magnetic remanence, a weak induced magnetization under bias field and variable behavior versus temperature. We show that our results are consistent with the antiferromagnetic behavior of the bulk material with a soft ferromagnetic uncompensated layer, indicating that extended ($>1~\mu$m) ferromagnetic domains are not sustained even at low temperatures (down to 4 K). Finally, we find that the magnetic order is strongly affected by the sample preparation, with a surprising diamagnetic order observed in a thin, hydrated sample., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Optically addressable spin defects hosted in two-dimensional van der Waals materials represent a new frontier for quantum technologies, promising to lead to a new class of ultrathin quantum sensors and simulators. Recently, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has been shown to host several types of optically addressable spin defects, thus offering a unique opportunity to simultaneously address and utilise various spin species in a single material. Here we demonstrate an interplay between two separate spin species within a single hBN crystal, namely $S=1$ boron vacancy defects and visible emitter spins. We unambiguously prove that the visible emitters are $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spins and further demonstrate room temperature coherent control and optical readout of both spin species. Importantly, by tuning the two spin species into resonance with each other, we observe cross-relaxation indicating strong inter-species dipolar coupling. We then demonstrate magnetic imaging using the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ defects, both under ambient and cryogenic conditions, and leverage their lack of intrinsic quantization axis to determine the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility of a test sample. Our results establish hBN as a versatile platform for quantum technologies in a van der Waals host at room temperature.

Detecting magnetic noise from small quantities of paramagnetic spins is a powerful capability for chemical, biochemical, and medical analysis. Quantum sensors based on optically addressable spin defects in bulk semiconductors are typically employed for such purposes, but the 3D crystal structure of the sensor inhibits the sensitivity by limiting the proximity of the defects to the target spins. Here we demonstrate the detection of paramagnetic spins using spin defects hosted in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a van der Waals material which can be exfoliated into the 2D regime. We first create negatively charged boron vacancy (V$_{\rm B}^-$) defects in a powder of ultrathin hBN nanoflakes ($<10$~atomic monolayers thick on average) and measure the longitudinal spin relaxation time ($T_1$) of this system. We then decorate the dry hBN nanopowder with paramagnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ions and observe a clear $T_1$ quenching, under ambient conditions, consistent with the added magnetic noise. Finally, we demonstrate the possibility of performing spin measurements including $T_1$ relaxometry using solution-suspended hBN nanopowder. Our results highlight the potential and versatility of the hBN quantum sensor for a range of sensing applications, and pave the way towards the realisation of a truly 2D, ultrasensitive quantum sensor., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Van der Waals (vdW) magnets are appealing candidates for realising spintronic devices that exploit current control of magnetization (e.g. switching or domain wall motion), but so far experimental demonstrations have been sparse, in part because of challenges associated with imaging the magnetization in these systems. Widefield nitrogen-vacancy (NV) microscopy allows rapid, quantitative magnetic imaging across entire vdW flakes, ideal for capturing changes in the micromagnetic structure due to an electric current. Here we use a widefield NV microscope to study the effect of current injection in thin flakes ($\sim10$nm) of the vdW ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ (FGT). We first observe current-reduced coercivity on an individual domain level, where current injection in FGT causes substantial reduction in the magnetic field required to locally reverse the magnetisation. We then explore the possibility of current-induced domain-wall motion, and provide preliminary evidence for such a motion under relatively low current densities, suggesting the existence of strong current-induced torques in our devices. Our results illustrate the applicability of widefield NV microscopy to imaging spintronic phenomena in vdW magnets, highlight the possibility of efficient magnetization control by direct current injection without assistance from an adjacent conductor, and motivate further investigations of the effect of currents in FGT and other vdW magnets., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

The recent isolation of two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic materials has uncovered rich physics that often differs from the magnetic behaviour of their bulk counterparts. However, the microscopic details of fundamental processes such as the initial magnetization or domain reversal, which govern the magnetic hysteresis, remain largely unknown in the ultrathin limit. Here we employ a widefield nitrogen-vacancy (NV) microscope to directly image these processes in few-layer flakes of magnetic semiconductor vanadium triiodide (VI$_3$). We observe complete and abrupt switching of most flakes at fields $H_c\approx0.5-1$ T (at 5 K) independent of thickness down to two atomic layers, with no intermediate partially-reversed state. The coercive field decreases as the temperature approaches the Curie temperature ($T_c\approx50$ K), however, the switching remains abrupt. We then image the initial magnetization process, which reveals thickness-dependent domain wall depinning fields well below $H_c$. These results point to ultrathin VI$_3$ being a nucleation-type hard ferromagnet, where the coercive field is set by the anisotropy-limited domain wall nucleation field. This work illustrates the power of widefield NV microscopy to investigate magnetization processes in van der Waals ferromagnets, which could be used to elucidate the origin of the hard ferromagnetic properties of other materials and explore field- and current-driven domain wall dynamics., Comment: includes SI

Microscopic imaging based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond, a tool increasingly used for room-temperature studies of condensed matter systems, has recently been extended to cryogenic conditions. However, it remains unclear whether the technique is viable for imaging temperature-sensitive phenomena below 10 K given the inherent laser illumination requirements, especially in a widefield configuration. Here we realise a widefield NV microscope with a field of view of 100 $\mu$m and a base temperature of 4 K, and use it to image Abrikosov vortices and transport currents in a superconducting Nb film. We observe the disappearance of vortices upon increase of laser power and their clustering about hot spots upon decrease, indicating that laser powers as low as 1 mW (4 orders of magnitude below the NV saturation) are sufficient to locally quench the superconductivity of the film ($T_c = 9$ K). This significant local heating is confirmed by resistance measurements, which reveal the presence of large temperature gradients (several K) across the film. We then investigate the effect of such gradients on transport currents, where the current path is seen to correlate with the temperature profile even in the fully superconducting phase. In addition to highlighting the role of temperature inhomogeneities in superconductivity phenomena, this work establishes that, under sufficiently low laser power conditions, widefield NV microscopy enables imaging over mesoscopic scales down to 4 K with a submicrometer spatial resolution, providing a new platform for real-space investigations of a range of systems from topological insulators to van der Waals ferromagnets.

The application of imaging techniques based on ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) sensors in diamond to characterise electrical devices has been proposed, but the compatibility of NV sensing with operational gated devices remains largely unexplored. Here we fabricate graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) directly on the diamond surface and characterise them via NV microscopy. The current density within the gated graphene is reconstructed from NV magnetometry under both mostly p- and n-type doping, but the exact doping level is found to be affected by the measurements. Additionally, we observe a surprisingly large modulation of the electric field at the diamond surface under an applied gate potential, seen in NV photoluminescence and NV electrometry measurements, suggesting a complex electrostatic response of the oxide-graphene-diamond structure. Iron biomineralisation is critical for life. Nature capitalises on the physical attributes of iron biominerals for a variety of functional, structural and sensory applications. Although magnetism is an integral property of iron biominerals, the role it plays in their nano-assembly remains a fundamental, unanswered question. This is well exemplified by the magnetite-bearing radula of chitons. Chitons, a class of marine mollusc, create the hardest biomineral of any animal in their abrasion-resistant, self-sharpening teeth4. Despite this system being subjected to a range of high resolution imaging studies, the mechanisms that drive mineral assembly remain unresolved. However, the advent of quantum imaging technology provides a new avenue to probe magnetic structures directly. Here we use quantum magnetic microscopy, based on nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond, to attain the first subcellular magnetic profiling of a eukaryotic system. Using complementary magnetic imaging protocols, we spatially map the principal mineral phases (ferrihydrite and magnetite) in the developing teeth of Acanthopleura hirtosa with submicron resolution. The images reveal previously undiscovered long-range magnetic order, established at the onset of magnetite mineralisation. This is in contrast to electron microscopy studies that show no strong common crystallographic orientation. The quantum-based magnetic profiling techniques presented in this work have broad application in biology, earth science, chemistry and materials engineering and can be applied across the range of systems for which iron is vital.

Diamond materials are central to an increasing range of advanced technological demonstrations, from high power electronics, to nano-scale quantum bio-imaging with unprecedented sensitivity. However, the full exploitation of diamond for these applications is often limited by the uncontrolled nature of the diamond material surface, which suffers from Fermi-level pinning and hosts a significant density of electro-magnetic noise sources. These issues occur despite the oxide-free and air-stable nature of the diamond crystal surface, which should be an ideal candidate for functionalization and chemical-engineering. In this work we reveal a family of previously unidentified and near-ubiquitous primal surface defects which we assign to differently reconstructed surface vacancies. The density of these defects is quantified with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, their energy structures are elucidated by ab initio calculations, and their effect on near-surface quantum probes is measured directly. Subsequent ab-initio calculation of band-bending from these defects suggest they are the source of Fermi-level pinning at most diamond surfaces. Finally, an investigation is conducted on a broad range of post-growth surface treatments and concludes that none of them can reproducibly reduce this defect density below the Fermi-pinning threshold, making this defect a prime candidate as the source for decoherence-limiting noise in near-surface quantum probes., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures; SI: 10 pages, 10 figures

Precise control of the resonant frequency of a spin qubit is of fundamental importance to quantum sensing protocols. We demonstrate a control technique on a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond where the applied magnetic field is modified by fine-tuning a permanent magnet's magnetisation via temperature control. Through this control mechanism, nanoscale cross-relaxation spectroscopy of both electron and nuclear spins in the vicinity of the NV centre are performed. We then show that through maintaining the magnet at a constant temperature an order of magnitude improvement in the stability of the NV qubit frequency can be achieved. This improved stability is tested in the polarisation of a small ensemble of nearby $^{13}$C spins via resonant cross-relaxation and the lifetime of this polarisation explored. The hyperpolarisation of nuclear spins within target molecules is a critical and complex challenge in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Hyperpolarisation offers enormous gains in signal and spatial resolution which may ultimately lead to the development of molecular MRI and NMR. At present, techniques used to polarise nuclear spins generally require low temperatures and/or high magnetic fields, radio-frequency control fields, or the introduction of catalysts or free-radical mediators. The emergence of room temperature solid-state spin qubits has opened exciting new pathways to circumvent these requirements to achieve direct nuclear spin hyperpolarisation using quantum control. Employing a novel cross-relaxation induced polarisation (CRIP) protocol using a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond, we demonstrate the first external nuclear spin hyperpolarisation achieved by a quantum probe, in this case of $^1$H molecular spins in poly(methyl methacrylate). In doing so, we show that a single qubit is capable of increasing the thermal polarisation of $\sim 10^6$ nuclear spins by six orders of magnitude, equivalent to an applied magnetic field of $10^5$\,T. The technique can also be tuned to multiple spin species, which we demonstrate using both \C{13} and $^1$H nuclear spin ensembles. Our results are analysed and interpreted via a detailed theoretical treatment, which is also used to describe how the system can be scaled up to a universal quantum hyperpolarisation platform for the production of macroscopic quantities of contrast agents at high polarisation levels for clinical applications. These results represent a new paradigm for nuclear spin hyperpolarisation for molecular imaging and spectroscopy, and beyond into areas such as materials science and quantum information processing., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The coherent control of spin qubits forms the basis of many applications in quantum information processing and nanoscale sensing, imaging and spectroscopy. Such control is conventionally achieved by direct driving of the qubit transition with a resonant global field, typically at microwave frequencies. Here we introduce an approach that relies on the resonant driving of nearby environment spins, whose localised magnetic field in turn drives the qubit when the environmental spin Rabi frequency matches the qubit resonance. This concept of environmentally mediated resonance (EMR) is explored experimentally using a qubit based on a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond, with nearby electronic spins serving as the environmental mediators. We demonstrate EMR driven coherent control of the NV spin-state, including the observation of Rabi oscillations, free induction decay, and spin-echo. This technique also provides a way to probe the nanoscale environment of spin qubits, which we illustrate by acquisition of electron spin resonance spectra of single NV centres in various settings., Comment: 12 pages including SI

The implementation of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at the nanoscale is a major challenge, as conventional systems require relatively large ensembles of spins and limit resolution to mesoscopic scales. New approaches based on quantum spin probes, such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre in diamond, have recently achieved nano-NMR under ambient conditions. However, the measurement protocols require application of complex microwave pulse sequences of high precision and relatively high power, placing limitations on the design and scalability of these techniques. Here we demonstrate a microwave-free method for nanoscale NMR using the NV centre, which is a far less invasive, and vastly simpler measurement protocol. By utilising a carefully tuned magnetic cross-relaxation interaction between a subsurface NV spin and an external, organic environment of proton spins, we demonstrate NMR spectroscopy of $^1$H within a $\approx(10~{\rm nm})^3$ sensing volume. We also theoretically and experimentally show that the sensitivity of our approach matches that of existing microwave control-based techniques using the NV centre. Removing the requirement for coherent manipulation of either the NV or the environmental spin quantum states represents a significant step towards the development of robust, non-invasive nanoscale NMR probes., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Since its first isolation in 2004, graphene has been found to host a plethora of unusual electronic transport phenomena, making it a fascinating system for fundamental studies in condensed-matter physics as well as offering tremendous opportunities for future electronic and sensing devices. However, to fully realise these goals a major challenge is the ability to non-invasively image charge currents in monolayer graphene structures and devices. Typically, electronic transport in graphene has been investigated via resistivity measurements, however, such measurements are generally blind to spatial information critical to observing and studying landmark transport phenomena such as electron guiding and focusing, topological currents and viscous electron backflow in real space, and in realistic imperfect devices. Here we bring quantum imaging to bear on the problem and demonstrate high-resolution imaging of current flow in graphene structures. Our method utilises an engineered array of near-surface, atomic-sized quantum sensors in diamond, to map the vector magnetic field and reconstruct the vector current density over graphene geometries of varying complexity, from mono-ribbons to junctions, with spatial resolution at the diffraction limit and a projected sensitivity to currents as small as 1 {\mu}A. The measured current maps reveal strong spatial variations corresponding to physical defects at the sub-{\mu}m scale. We investigate the photo-induced spin dynamics of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond near the electronic ground state level anti-crossing (GSLAC), which occurs at an axial magnetic field around 1024 G. Using optically detected magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we first find that the electron spin transition frequency can be tuned down to 100 kHz for the \NV{14} centre, while for the \NV{15} centre the transition strength vanishes for frequencies below about 2 MHz owing to the GSLAC level structure. Using optical pulses to prepare and readout the spin state, we observe coherent spin oscillations at 1024 G for the \NV{14}, which originate from spin mixing induced by residual transverse magnetic fields. This effect is responsible for limiting the smallest observable transition frequency, which can span two orders of magnitude from 100 kHz to tens of MHz depending on the local magnetic noise. A similar feature is observed for the \NV{15} centre at 1024 G. As an application of these findings, we demonstrate all-optical detection and spectroscopy of externally-generated fluctuating magnetic fields at frequencies from 8 MHz down to 500 kHz, using a \NV{14} centre. Since the Larmor frequency of most nuclear spin species lies within this frequency range near the GSLAC, these results pave the way towards all-optical, nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, using longitudinal spin cross-relaxation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We demonstrate a wide-band all-optical method of nanoscale magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy under ambient conditions. Our method relies on cross-relaxation between a probe spin, the electronic spin of a nitrogen-vacancy centre in diamond, and target spins as the two systems are tuned into resonance. By optically monitoring the spin relaxation time ($T_1$) of the probe spin while varying the amplitude of an applied static magnetic field, a frequency spectrum of the target spin resonances, a $T_1$-MR spectrum, is obtained. As a proof of concept, we measure $T_1$-MR spectra of a small ensemble of $^{14}$N impurities surrounding the probe spin within the diamond, with each impurity comprising an electron spin 1/2 and a nuclear spin 1. The intrinsically large bandwidth of the technique and probe properties allows us to detect both electron spin transitions -- in the GHz range -- and nuclear spin transitions -- in the MHz range -- of the $^{14}$N spin targets. The measured frequencies are found to be in excellent agreement with theoretical expectations, and allow us to infer the hyperfine, quadrupole and gyromagnetic constants of the target spins. Analysis of the strength of the resonances obtained in the $T_1$-MR spectrum reveals that the electron spin transitions are probed via dipole interactions, while the nuclear spin resonances are dramatically enhanced by hyperfine coupling and an electron-mediated process. Finally, we investigate theoretically the possibility of performing $T_1$-MR spectroscopy on nuclear spins without hyperfine interaction and predict single-proton sensitivity using current technology. Quantum sensors based on solid-state spins provide tremendous opportunities in a wide range of fields from basic physics and chemistry to biomedical imaging. However, integrating them into a scanning probe microscope to enable practical, nanoscale quantum imaging is a highly challenging task. Recently, the use of single spins in diamond in conjunction with atomic force microscopy techniques has allowed significant progress towards this goal, but generalisation of this approach has so far been impeded by long acquisition times or by the absence of simultaneous topographic information. Here we report on a scanning quantum probe microscope which solves both issues, by employing a nano-spin ensemble hosted in a nanodiamond. This approach provides up to an order of magnitude gain in acquisition time, whilst preserving sub-100 nm spatial resolution both for the quantum sensor and topographic images. We demonstrate two applications of this microscope. We first image nanoscale clusters of maghemite particles through both spin resonance spectroscopy and spin relaxometry, under ambient conditions. Our images reveal fast magnetic field fluctuations in addition to a static component, indicating the presence of both superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic particles. We next demonstrate a new imaging modality where the nano-spin ensemble is used as a thermometer. We use this technique to map the photo-induced heating generated by laser irradiation of a single gold nanoparticle in a fluid environment. Imaging the fields of magnetic materials provides crucial insight into the physical and chemical processes surrounding magnetism, and has been a key ingredient in the spectacular development of magnetic data storage. Existing approaches using the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE), x-ray and electron microscopy have limitations that constrain further development, and there is increasing demand for imaging and characterisation of magnetic phenomena in real time with high spatial resolution. In this work, we show how the magneto-optical response of an array of negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy spins in diamond can be used to image and map the sub-micron stray magnetic field patterns from thin ferromagnetic films. Using optically detected magnetic resonance, we demonstrate wide-field magnetic imaging over 100x100 {\mu}m^2 with a diffraction-limited spatial resolution of 440 nm at video frame rates, under ambient conditions. We demonstrate a novel all-optical spin relaxation contrast imaging approach which can image magnetic structures in the absence of an applied microwave field. Straightforward extensions promise imaging with sub-{\mu}T sensitivity and sub-optical spatial and millisecond temporal resolution. This work establishes practical diamond-based wide-field microscopy for rapid high-sensitivity characterisation and imaging of magnetic samples, with the capability for investigating magnetic phenomena such as domain wall and skyrmion dynamics and the spin Hall effect in metals., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures
