Abstract

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EMABG) is an international master program operating on a global scale, with the aim to train experts and future leaders for research and industry. The training and education takes place at six European universities, within four study tracks with carefully designed curricula. One of the central parts of the MSc programme is the integration of teamwork activities and training of transversal skills to increase the employability of the graduates. To achieve this goal several major events are incorporated into the study programme during the entire duration of the two years. Also, strong emphasis is placed on integration of experts from the industry in the form of talks during joint events, internships, and direct work during special courses, as well as the final thesis.

Abstract

The distal part of SSC7, which contains the ortholog to the ovine region encompassing the callipyge locus, was analyzed in a Pietrain [F.sub.2] resource population comprising more than 2,700 offspring. The aim of the study was to map QTL affecting carcass traits comparable with the callipyge phenotype in sheep. We applied an interval mapping approach using 14 microsatellite markers and detected 3 QTL with small effects. The first QTL affects fat thickness on the middle of the back, with no detectable impact on fat sizes at other places on the back, whereas the second QTL affects side fat thickness. The third QTL influences the ham weight and shows a clear parent-of-origin-dependent effect in the form of maternal polar overdominance. It is not located at the position of the imprinting cluster including the callipyge locus, but 7 cM proximal. Abstract

The European COST Action GroupHouseNet aims to provide synergy for preventing damaging behaviour in group-housed pigs and laying hens. One area of focus of this network is how genetic and genomic tools can be used to breed animals that are less likely to develop damaging behaviour directed at their pen-mates. Reducing damaging behaviour in large groups is a challenge, because it is difficult to identify and monitor individual animals. With the current developments in sensor technologies and animal breeding, there is the possibility to identify individual animals, monitor individual behaviour, and link this information to the genotype. Using a combination of sensor technologies and genomics enables us to select against damaging behaviour in pigs and laying hens.

Abstract

Feather pecking is a serious problem to the layer industry severely impairing animal welfare and causing economic losses. As a measure to control this unwanted behavior, beak trimming has been applied in the past, but is now banned in more and more countries including Germany. The propensity to perform feather pecking is a heritable trait. It can be reduced by means of breeding, but it is a hard-to-measure trait and to establish suitable selection schemes, knowledge of the genetic architecture of the trait is needed. Commercial flocks are of limited use for this research purpose for several reasons, but selection lines offer the possibility to realize advanced experimental designs. Here, a selective review on fundamental-type research is presented that has been conducted in the Hohenheim selection lines over the past years. Based thereon and the available literature, a mechanistic hypothesis about feather pecking is developed and it gives a perspective on implications for practical breeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
