Introduction Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional death worldwide. In hospital falls represent a relevant health problem, in particular after their increasing since Covid year 2020. The aim of this study is to evaluate correlation between falls and Covid infection., Methods: Risk Management Unit at Mauriziano hospital analyzed in the present observational study possible correlation with Covid Pandemic and falls risk factors, through comparison of patients falls occurred during year 2021 in Covid and no-Covid wards. The primary outcome of the study is the evaluation of relationship between falls and Covid infection. The secondary outcome is identification of falls risk factors., Results: No direct correlation between falls and Covid-19 infection was found. Among falls risk factors, the most interesting emerged is the fall itself that enhances the risk of relapse., Discussion: Increasing in patients falls since 2020 could be affected indirectly by strong hospital organization modifications during Covid pandemic.

(1) Background: An optical simulator able to provide a repeatable signal with desired characteristics as an input to a photoplethysmographic (PPG) device is presented in order to compare the performance of different PPG devices and also to test the devices with PPG signals available in online databases. (2) Methods: The optical simulator consists of an electronic board containing a photodiode and LEDs at different wavelengths in order to simulate light reflected by the body; the PPG signal taken from the chosen database is reproduced by the electronic board, and the board is used to test a wearable PPG medical device in the form of earbuds. (3) Results: The PPG device response to different average and peak-to-peak signal amplitudes is shown in order to assess the device sensitivity, and the fidelity in tracking the actual heart rate is also investigated. (4) Conclusions: The developed optical simulator promises to be an affordable, flexible, and reliable solution to test PPG devices in the lab, allowing the testing of their actual performances thanks to the possibility of using PPG databases, thus gaining useful and significant information before on-the-field clinical trials.

A frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar for short-range target imaging, assembling a transceiver, a PLL, an SP4T switch, and a serial patch antenna array, was realized. A new algorithm based on a double Fourier transform (2D-FT) was developed and compared with the delay and sum (DAS) and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithms proposed in the literature for target detection. The three reconstruction algorithms were applied to simulated canonical cases evidencing radar resolutions close to the theoretical ones. The proposed 2D-FT algorithm exhibits an angle of view greater than 25° and is five times faster than DAS and 20 times faster than the MUSIC one. The realized radar shows a range resolution of 55 cm and an angular resolution of 14° and is able to correctly identify the positions of single and multiple targets in realistic scenarios, with errors lower than 20 cm.

Microwave imaging is an active area of research that has garnered interest over the past few years. The main desired improvements to microwave imaging are related to the performances of radiating systems and identification algorithms. To achieve these improvements, antennas suitable to guarantee demanding requirements are needed. In particular, they must operate in close proximity to the objects under examination, ensure an adequate bandwidth, as well as reduced dimensions and low production costs. In addition, in near-field microwave imaging systems, the antenna should provide an ultra-wideband (UWB) response. Given the relevance of the foreseen applications, many UWB antenna designs for microwave imaging applications have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, a comprehensive review of different UWB antenna designs for near-field microwave imaging is presented. The antennas are classified according to the manufacturing technology and radiative performances. Particular attention is also paid to the radiation mechanisms as well as the techniques used to reduce the size and improve the bandwidth.

Most core residues of coiled coils are hydrophobic. Occasional polar residues are thought to lower stability, but impart structural specificity. The coiled coils of trimeric autotransporter adhesins (TAAs) are conspicuous for their large number of polar residues in position d of the core, which often leads to their prediction as natively unstructured regions. The most frequent residue, asparagine (N@d), can occur in runs of up to 19 consecutive heptads, frequently in the motif [I/V]xxNTxx. In the Salmonella TAA, SadA, the core asparagines form rings of interacting residues with the following threonines, grouped around a central anion. This conformation is observed generally in N@d layers from trimeric coiled coils of known structure. Attempts to impose a different register on the motif show that the asparagines orient themselves specifically into the core, even against conflicting information from flanking domains. When engineered into the GCN4 leucine zipper, N@d layers progressively destabilized the structure, but zippers with 3 N@d layers still folded at high concentration. We propose that N@d layers maintain the coiled coils of TAAs in a soluble, export-competent state during autotransport through the outer membrane. More generally, we think that polar motifs that are both periodic and conserved may often reflect special folding requirements, rather than an unstructured state of the mature proteins.

Two cases of acute accidental quinidine poisioning in two children are presented. Both cases are characterized by the same ECG abnormalities consisting of rhythm disorders and AV and intraventricular conduction defects. It is suggested that there is a causal relationship between the electrophysiologic cardiac effects of quinidine and the ECG abnormalities observed. Both patients were successfully treated by continuous intravenous infusion of a hypertonic sodium chloride solution and lidocaine.

A case of electrical T wave alternans without change of P wave and QRS complex is reported here. Literature on this subject is reviewed. It is emphasized that the alternation of T wave always exists when important morphological anomalies of QT tract and prolongation of QT are present.
