Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes on Io's surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes. Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a ground-based telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io's trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. Black hole X-ray binaries (BH XRBs) are ideal targets to study the connection between accretion inflow and jet outflow. Here we present quasi-simultaneous, multi-wavelength observations of the Galactic black hole system MAXI J1820+070, throughout its 2018-2019 outburst. Our data set includes coverage from the radio through X-ray bands from 17 different instruments/telescopes, and encompasses 19 epochs over a 7 month time period, resulting in one of the most well-sampled multi-wavelength data sets of a BH XRB outburst to date. With our data, we compile and model the broad-band spectra of this source using a phenomenological model that includes emission from the jet, companion star, and accretion flow. This modeling allows us to track the evolution of the spectral break in the jet spectrum, a key observable that samples the jet launching region. We find that the spectral break location changes over at least $\approx3$ orders of magnitude in electromagnetic frequency over this period. Using these spectral break measurements, we link the full cycle of jet behavior, including the rising, quenching, and re-ignition, to the changing accretion flow properties as the source evolves through its different accretion states. Our analyses show a consistent jet behavior with other sources in similar phases of their outbursts, reinforcing that the jet quenching and recovery may be a global feature of BH XRB systems in outburst. The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. We present the results of deep, ground based U-band imaging with the Large Binocular Telescope of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field as part of the near-UV imaging program, UVCANDELS. We utilize a seeing sorted stacking method along with night-to-night relative transparency corrections to create optimal depth and optimal resolution mosaics in the U-band, which are capable of reaching point source magnitudes of AB 26.5 mag at 3 sigma. These ground based mosaics bridge the wavelength gap between the HST WFC3 F27W and ACS F435W images and are necessary to understand galaxy assembly in the last 9-10 Gyr. We use the depth of these mosaics to search for the presence of U-band intragroup light (IGrL) beyond the local Universe. Regardless of how groups are scaled and stacked, we do not detect any U-band IGrL to unprecedented U-band depths of 29.1-29.6 mag/arcsec2, which corresponds to an IGrL fraction of less than 1% of the total group light. This stringent upper limit suggests that IGrL does not contribute significantly to the Extragalactic Background Light at short wavelengths. Furthermore, the lack of UV IGrL observed in these stacks suggests that the atomic gas observed in the intragroup medium (IGrM) is likely not dense enough to trigger star formation on large scales. Future studies may detect IGrL by creating similar stacks at longer wavelengths or by pre-selecting groups which are older and/or more dynamically evolved similar to past IGrL observations of compact groups and loose groups with signs of gravitational interactions., Comment: Accepted to PASP

Although many exoplanets have been indirectly detected over the last years, direct imaging of them with ground-based telescopes remains challenging. In the presence of atmospheric fluctuations, it is ambitious to resolve the high brightness contrasts at the small angular separation between the star and its potential partners. Post-processing of telescope images has become an essential tool to improve the resolvable contrast ratios. This paper contributes a post-processing algorithm for fast-cadence imaging, which deconvolves sequences of telescope images. The algorithm infers a Bayesian estimate of the astronomical object as well as the atmospheric optical path length, including its spatial and temporal structures. For this, we utilize physics-inspired models for the object, the atmosphere, and the telescope. The algorithm is computationally expensive but allows to resolve high contrast ratios despite short observation times and no field rotation. We test the performance of the algorithm with point-like companions synthetically injected into a real data set acquired with the SHARK-VIS pathfinder instrument at the LBT telescope. Sources with brightness ratios down to $6\cdot10^{-4}$ to the star are detected at $185$ mas separation with a short observation time of $0.6\,\text{s}$., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We obtained 838 Sloan r-band images (~28 hrs) of the GOODS-North field with the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) on the Large Binocular Telescope in order to study the presence of extended, low surface brightness features in galaxies and investigate the trade-off between image depth and resolution. The individual images were sorted by effective seeing, which allowed for optimal resolution and optimal depth mosaics to be created with all images with seeing FWHM < 0.9" and FWHM < 2.0", respectively. Examining bright galaxies and their substructure as well as accurately deblending overlapping objects requires the optimal resolution mosaic, while detecting the faintest objects possible (to a limiting magnitude of $m_{AB}$ ~ 29.2 mag) requires the optimal depth mosaic. The better surface brightness sensitivity resulting from the larger LBC pixels, compared to those of extant WFC3/UVIS and ACS/WFC cameras aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) allows for unambiguous detection of both diffuse flux and very faint tidal tails. We created azimuthally-averaged radial surface brightness profiles for the 360 brightest galaxies in the mosaics. We find little difference in the majority of the light profiles from the optimal resolution and optimal depth mosaics. However, $\lesssim$ 15% of the profiles show excess flux in the galaxy outskirts down to surface brightness levels of $\mu^{AB}_{r} $ $\simeq$ 31 mag arcsec $^{-2}$. This is relevant to Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) studies as diffuse light in the outer regions of galaxies are thought to be a major contribution to the EBL. While some additional diffuse light exists in the optimal depth profiles compared to the shallower, optimal resolution profiles, we find that diffuse light in galaxy outskirts is a minor contribution to the EBL overall in the r-band., Comment: 30 pages, 25 figures, submitted to PASP

We present a detailed study of the evolution of the Galactic black hole transient GRS 1716-249 during its 2016-2017 outburst at optical (Las Cumbres Observatory), mid-infrared (Very Large Telescope), near-infrared (Rapid Eye Mount telescope), and ultraviolet (the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope) wavelengths, along with archival radio and X-ray data. We show that the optical/near-infrared and UV emission of the source mainly originates from a multi-temperature accretion disk, while the mid-infrared and radio emission are dominated by synchrotron emission from a compact jet. The optical/UV flux density is correlated with the X-ray emission when the source is in the hard state, consistent with an X-ray irradiated accretion disk with an additional contribution from the viscous disk during the outburst fade. We also report the long-term optical light curve of the source and find that the quiescent i-band magnitude is 21.39$\pm$0.15 mag. Furthermore, we discuss how previous estimates of the system parameters of the source are based on various incorrect assumptions, and so are likely to be inaccurate. By comparing our GRS 1716-249 dataset to those of other outbursting black hole X-ray binaries, we find that while GRS 1716-249 shows similar X-ray behaviour, it is noticeably optically fainter, if the literature distance of 2.4 kpc is adopted. Using several lines of reasoning, we argue that the source distance is further than previously assumed in the literature, likely within 4-17 kpc, with a most likely range of $\sim$4-8 kpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present a new processing technique aimed at significantly improving the angular differential imaging method (ADI) in the context of high-contrast imaging of faint objects nearby bright stars in observations obtained with extreme adaptive optics (EXAO) systems. This technique, named "SFADI" for "Speckle-Free ADI", allows to improve the achievable contrast by means of speckles identification and suppression. This is possible in very high cadence data, which freeze the atmospheric evolution. Here we present simulations in which synthetic planets are injected into a real millisecond frame rate sequence, acquired at the LBT telescope at visible wavelength, and show that this technique can deliver low and uniform background, allowing unambiguous detection of $10^{-5}$ contrast planets, from $100$ to $300$ mas separations, under poor and highly variable seeing conditions ($0.8$ to $1.5$ arcsec FWHM) and in only $20$ min of acquisition. A comparison with a standard ADI approach shows that the contrast limit is improved by a factor of $5$. We extensively discuss the SFADI dependence on the various parameters like speckle identification threshold, frame integration time, and number of frames, as well as its ability to provide high-contrast imaging for extended sources, and also to work with fast acquisitions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a study of the trade-off between depth and resolution using a large number of U-band imaging observations in the GOODS-North field (Giavalisco et al. 2004) from the Large Binocular Camera (LBC) on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Having acquired over 30 hours of data (315 images with 5-6 mins exposures), we generated multiple image mosaics, starting with the best atmospheric seeing images (FWHM $\lesssim$0.8"), which constitute $\sim$10% of the total data set. For subsequent mosaics, we added in data with larger seeing values until the final, deepest mosaic included all images with FWHM $\lesssim$1.8" ($\sim$94% of the total data set). From the mosaics, we made object catalogs to compare the optimal-resolution, yet shallower image to the lower-resolution but deeper image. We show that the number counts for both images are $\sim$90% complete to $U_{AB}$ $\lesssim26$. Fainter than $U_{AB}$$\sim$ 27, the object counts from the optimal-resolution image start to drop-off dramatically (90% between $U_{AB}$ = 27 and 28 mag), while the deepest image with better surface-brightness sensitivity ($\mu^{AB}_{U}$$\lesssim$ 32 mag arcsec$^{-2}$) show a more gradual drop (10% between $U_{AB}$ $\simeq$ 27 and 28 mag). For the brightest galaxies within the GOODS-N field, structure and clumpy features within the galaxies are more prominent in the optimal-resolution image compared to the deeper mosaics. Finally, we find - for 220 brighter galaxies with $U_{AB}$$\lesssim$ 24 mag - only marginal differences in total flux between the optimal-resolution and lower-resolution light-profiles to $\mu^{AB}_{U}$$\lesssim$ 32 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. In only 10% of the cases are the total-flux differences larger than 0.5 mag. We overview the current status of photometric analyses of images collected with Multi Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) at 8-10m class telescopes that operated, or are operating, on sky. Particular attention will be payed to resolved stellar population studies. Stars in crowded stellar systems, such as globular clusters or in nearby galaxies, are ideal test particles to test AO performance. We will focus the discussion on photometric precision and accuracy reached nowadays. We briefly describe our project on stellar photometry and astrometry of Galactic globular clusters using images taken with GeMS at the Gemini South telescope. We also present the photometry performed with DAOPHOT suite of programs into the crowded regions of these globulars reaching very faint limiting magnitudes Ks ~21.5 mag on moderately large fields of view (~1.5 arcmin squared). We highlight the need for new algorithms to improve the modeling of the complex variation of the Point Spread Function across the field of view. Finally, we outline the role that large samples of stellar standards plays in providing a detailed description of the MCAO performance and in precise and accurate colour{magnitude diagrams., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, SPIE 2016

We present B and V time-series photometry of Andromeda XXV, the third galaxy in our program on the Andromeda's satellites, that we have imaged with the Large Binocular Cameras of the Large Binocular Telescope. The field of Andromeda XXV is found to contain 63 variable stars, for which we present light curves and characteristics of the light variation (period, amplitudes, variability type, mean magnitudes, etc.). The sample includes 58 RR Lyrae variables (46 fundamental-mode $-$ RRab, and 12 first-overtone $-$RRc, pulsators), three anomalous Cepheids, one eclipsing binary system and one unclassified variable. The average period of the RRab stars ($\langle Pab \rangle$ = 0.60 $\sigma=0.04$ days) and the period-amplitude diagram place Andromeda XXV in the class of the Oosterhoff-Intermediate objects. From the average luminosity of the RR Lyrae stars we derive for the galaxy a distance modulus of (m-M)$_0$=$24.63\pm0.17$ mag. The color-magnitude diagram reveals the presence in Andromeda XXV of a single, metal-poor ([Fe/H]=$-$1.8 dex) stellar population as old as $\sim$ 10-12 Gyr traced by a conspicuous red giant branch and the large population of RR Lyrae stars. We discovered a spherically-shaped high density of stars near the galaxy center. This structure appears to be at a distance consistent with Andromeda XXV and we suggest it could either be a star cluster or the nucleus of Andromeda XXV. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory will be one of the largest ground-based very high-energy gamma-ray observatories. The On-Site Analysis will be the first CTA scientific analysis of data acquired from the array of telescopes, in both northern and southern sites. The On-Site Analysis will have two pipelines: the Level-A pipeline (also known as Real-Time Analysis, RTA) and the level-B one. The RTA performs data quality monitoring and must be able to issue automated alerts on variable and transient astrophysical sources within 30 seconds from the last acquired Cherenkov event that contributes to the alert, with a sensitivity not worse than the one achieved by the final pipeline by more than a factor of 3. The Level-B Analysis has a better sensitivity (not be worse than the final one by a factor of 2) and the results should be available within 10 hours from the acquisition of the data: for this reason this analysis could be performed at the end of an observation or next morning. The latency (in particular for the RTA) and the sensitivity requirements are challenging because of the large data rate, a few GByte/s. The remote connection to the CTA candidate site with a rather limited network bandwidth makes the issue of the exported data size extremely critical and prevents any kind of processing in real-time of the data outside the site of the telescopes. For these reasons the analysis will be performed on-site with infrastructures co-located with the telescopes, with limited electrical power availability and with a reduced possibility of human intervention. This means, for example, that the on-site hardware infrastructure should have low-power consumption. We present data collected using the camera PISCES coupled with the Firt Light Adaptive Optics (FLAO) mounted at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). The images were collected using two natural guide stars with an apparent magnitude of R<13 mag. During these observations the seeing was on average ~0.9". The AO performed very well: the images display a mean FWHM of 0.05 arcsec and of 0.06 arcsec in the J- and in the Ks-band, respectively. The Strehl ratio on the quoted images reaches 13-30% (J) and 50-65% (Ks), in the off and in the central pointings respectively. On the basis of this sample we have reached a J-band limiting magnitude of ~22.5 mag and the deepest Ks-band limiting magnitude ever obtained in a crowded stellar field: Ks~23 mag. J-band images display a complex change in the shape of the PSF when moving at larger radial distances from the natural guide star. In particular, the stellar images become more elongated in approaching the corners of the J-band images whereas the Ks-band images are more uniform. We discuss in detail the strategy used to perform accurate and deep photometry in these very challenging images. In particular we will focus our attention on the use of an updated version of ROMAFOT based on asymmetric and analytical Point Spread Functions. The quality of the photometry allowed us to properly identify a feature that clearly shows up in NIR bands: the main sequence knee (MSK). The MSK is independent of the evolutionary age, therefore the difference in magnitude with the canonical clock to constrain the cluster age, the main sequence turn off (MSTO), provides an estimate of the absolute age of the cluster. The key advantage of this new approach is that the error decreases by a factor of two when compared with the classical one. Combining ground-based Ks with space F606W photometry, we estimate the absolute age of M15 to be 13.70+-0.80 Gyr., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, presented at the SPIE conference 2014

We present B,V time-series photometry of Andromeda XIX (And XIX), the most extended (half-light radius of 6.2') of Andromeda's dwarf spheroidal companions, that we observed with the Large Binocular Cameras at the Large Binocular Telescope. We surveyed a 23'x 23' area centered on And XIX and present the deepest color magnitude diagram (CMD) ever obtained for this galaxy, reaching, at V~26.3 mag, about one magnitude below the horizontal branch (HB). The CMD shows a prominent and slightly widened red giant branch, along with a predominantly red HB, which, however, extends to the blue to significantly populate the classical instability strip. We have identified 39 pulsating variable stars, of which 31 are of RR Lyrae type and 8 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs). Twelve of the RR Lyrae variables and 3 of the ACs are located within And XIX's half light radius. The average period of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars ( = 0.62 d, \sigma= 0.03 d) and the period-amplitude diagram qualify And XIX as an Oosterhoff-Intermediate system. From the average luminosity of the RR Lyrae stars ( = 25.34 mag, \sigma= 0.10 mag) we determine a distance modulus of (m-M)$_0$=$24.52\pm0.23$ mag in a scale where the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is $18.5\pm0.1$ mag. The ACs follow a well defined Period-Wesenheit (PW) relation that appears to be in very good agreement with the PW relationship defined by the ACs in the LMC., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

The ASTRI project is the INAF (Italian National Institute for Astrophysics) flagship project developed in the context of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) international project. ASTRI is dedicated to the realization of the prototype of a Cherenkov small-size dual-mirror telescope (SST-2M) and then to the realization of a mini-array composed of a few of these units. The prototype and all the necessary hardware devices are foreseen to be installed at the Serra La Nave Observing Station (Catania, Italy) in 2014. The upcoming data flow will be properly reduced by dedicated (online and offline) analysis pipelines aimed at providing robust and reliable scientific results (signal detection, sky maps, spectra and light curves) from the ASTRI silicon photo-multipliers camera raw data. Furthermore, a flexible archiving system has being conceived for the storage of all the acquired ASTRI (scientific, calibration, housekeeping) data at different steps of the data reduction up to the final scientific products. In this contribution we present the data acquisition, the analysis pipeline and the archive architecture that will be in use for the ASTRI SST prototype. We present diffraction-limited \ks band and \lprime adaptive optics images of the edge-on debris disk around the nearby F2 star HD 15115, obtained with a single 8.4 m primary mirror at the Large Binocular Telescope. At \ks band the disk is detected at signal-to-noise per resolution element (SNRE) \about 3-8 from \about 1-2\fasec 5 (45-113 AU) on the western side, and from \about 1.2-2\fasec 1 (63-90 AU) on the east. At \lprime the disk is detected at SNRE \about 2.5 from \about 1-1\fasec 45 (45-90 AU) on both sides, implying more symmetric disk structure at 3.8 \microns . At both wavelengths the disk has a bow-like shape and is offset from the star to the north by a few AU. A surface brightness asymmetry exists between the two sides of the disk at \ks band, but not at \lprime . The surface brightness at \ks band declines inside 1\asec (\about 45 AU), which may be indicative of a gap in the disk near 1\asec. The \ks - \lprime disk color, after removal of the stellar color, is mostly grey for both sides of the disk. This suggests that scattered light is coming from large dust grains, with 3-10 \microns -sized grains on the east side and 1-10 \microns dust grains on the west. This may suggest that the west side is composed of smaller dust grains than the east side, which would support the interpretation that the disk is being dynamically affected by interactions with the local interstellar medium., Comment: Apj-accepted March 27 2012; minor corrections

Photometry in B, V (down to V ~ 26 mag) is presented for two 23' x 23' fields of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) that were observed with the blue channel camera of the Large Binocular Telescope during the Science Demonstration Time. Each field covers an area of about 5.1kpc x 5.1kpc at the distance of M31 ((m-M)o ~ 24.4 mag), sampling, respectively, a northeast region close to the M31 giant stream (field S2), and an eastern portion of the halo in the direction of the galaxy minor axis (field H1). The stream field spans a region that includes Andromeda's disk and the giant stream, and this is reflected in the complexity of the color magnitude diagram of the field. One corner of the halo field also includes a portion of the giant stream. Even though these demonstration time data were obtained under non-optimal observing conditions the B photometry, acquired in time-series mode, allowed us to identify 274 variable stars (among which 96 are bona fide and 31 are candidate RR Lyrae stars, 71 are Cepheids, and 16 are binary systems) by applying the image subtraction technique to selected portions of the observed fields. Differential flux light curves were obtained for the vast majority of these variables. Our sample includes mainly pulsating stars which populate the instability strip from the Classical Cepheids down to the RR Lyrae stars, thus tracing the different stellar generations in these regions of M31 down to the horizontal branch of the oldest (t ~ 10 Gyr) component., Comment: 59 pages, 26 figures, 12 tables, ApJ in press

We present results from our Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of two low-luminosity X-ray pulsators SAX J1324.4-6200 and SAX J1452.8-5949 which have spin-periods of 172 s and 437 s respectively. The XMM-Newton spectra for both sources can be fitted well with a simple power-law model of photon index ~ 1.0. A black-body model can equally well fit the spectra with a temperature of ~ 2 keV for both sources. During our XMM-Newton observations, SAX J1324.4-6200 is detected with coherent X-ray pulsations at a period of $172.86 \pm 0.02$ s while no pulsations with a pulse fraction greater than 15% (at 98% confidence level) are detected in SAX J1452.8--5949. The spin period of SAX J1324.4-6200 is found to be increasing on a time-scale of $\dot{P}$ = $(6.34 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-9}$ s s$^{-1}$ which would suggest that the accretor is a neutron star and not a white dwarf. Using sub-arcsec spatial resolution of the Chandra telescope, possible counterparts are seen for both sources in the near-infrared images obtained with the SOFI instrument on the New Technology Telescope. The X-ray and near-infrared properties of SAX J1324.4-6200 suggest it to be either a persistent high mass accreting X-ray pulsar or a symbiotic X-ray binary pulsar at a distance $\le$ 9 kpc. We identify the infrared counterpart of SAX J1452.8--5949 to be a late-type main sequence star at a distance $\le$ 10 kpc, thus ruling out SAX J1452.8--5949 to be a high mass X-ray binary. However with the present X-ray and near-infrared observations, we cannot make any further conclusive conclusion about the nature of SAX J1452.8-5949., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables (Submitted to MNRAS)

We present a deep, wide-field photometric survey of the newly-discovered Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy, based on data from the Large Binocular Telescope. Images in B, V and r were obtained with the Large Binocular Camera covering a 23' times 23' field of view to a magnitude of ~25.5 (5 sigma). This permitted the construction of colour-magnitude diagrams that reach approximately 1.5 magnitudes below the Hercules main sequence turnoff. Three-filter photometry allowed us to preferentially select probable Hercules member stars, and examine the structure of this system at a previously unattained level. We find that the Hercules dwarf is highly elongated (3:1), considerably more so than any other dSph satellite of the Milky Way except the disrupting Sagittarius dwarf. While we cannot rule out that the unusual structure is intrinsic to Hercules as an equilibrium system, our results suggest tidal disruption as a likely cause of this highly elliptical structure. Near infrared (IR) studies of Cepheid variables in the LMC take advantage of the reduced light curve amplitude and metallicity dependence at these wavelengths. This work presents such photometry for two young clusters known to contain sizeable Cepheid populations: NGC 1866 and NGC 2031. Our goal is to determine light curves and period-luminosity (PL) relations in the near-IR, to assess the similarity between cluster and field pulsators, and to examine the predictive capability of current pulsation models. The light curves are obtained from multiwavelength broadband J,H,Ks photometry of Cepheids in both clusters, with periods previously established from optical photometry. Mean magnitudes for the Cepheids are used to construct PL relations in the near-IR. The properties in the PL planes are compared with the behavior of field Cepheids in the LMC and with the predictions of recent pulsational models, both canonical and overluminous. Cluster and field Cepheids are homogeneous and the inclusion of the cluster Cepheids in the field sample extends nicely the PL relation. The slope of the PL relation is constant over the whole period range and does not show -- at least in the adopted IR bands -- the break in slope at P ~ 10 d reported by some authors. A comparison with the predictions of pulsation models allows an estimate for the distance moduli of NGC 1866 and NGC 2031. The two clusters are found to lie at essentially the same distance. Fitting of theoretical models to the data gives, for the K filter, (m-M)_0 = 18.62+-0.10 if canonical models are used and (m-M)_0 = 18.42+-0.10 if overluminous models are used. The sky region including the Chandra position of SGR 1806-20 was monitored in the IR band during 2004, following its increased high energy bursting activity. Observations were performed using NAOS-CONICA, the adaptive optics IR camera mounted on Yepun VLT, which provided images of unprecedented quality (FWHM better than 0.1"). After the 2004 December 27th giant flare, the source position has been nailed by VLA observations of its radio counterpart, reducing the positional uncertainty to 0.04". Using IR data from our monitoring campaign, we discovered the likely IR counterpart to SGR 1806-20 based on positional coincidence with the Chandra and VLA uncertainty regions and flux variability of a factor of about 2 correlated with that at higher energies. The ROSAT source RX J0630.8-2834 was suggested by positional coincidence to be the X-ray counterpart of the old field pulsar PSR B0628-28. This association, however, was regarded to be unlikely based on the computed energetics of the putative X-ray counterpart. In this paper we report on multiwavelength observations of PSR B0628-28 made with the ESO/NTT observatory in La Silla, the Jodrell Bank radio observatory and XMM-Newton. Although the optical observations do not detect any counterpart of RX J0630.8-2834 down to a limiting magnitude of V=26.1 mag and B=26.3 mag, XMM-Newton observations finally confirmed it to be the pulsar's X-ray counterpart by detecting X-ray pulses with the radio pulsar's spin-period. The X-ray pulse profile is characterized by a single broad peak with a second smaller peak leading the main pulse component by ~144 degree. The fraction of pulsed photons is (38 +- 7)% with no strong energy dependence in the XMM-Newton bandpass. The pulsar's X-ray spectrum is well described by a single component power law with photon index 2.63^{+0.23}_{-0.15}, indicating that the pulsar's X radiation is dominated by non-thermal emission processes. A low level contribution of thermal emission from residual cooling or from heated polar caps, cannot be excluded. The pulsar's spin-down to X-ray energy conversion efficiency is obtained to be ~16% for the radio dispersion measure inferred pulsar distance. If confirmed, PSR B0628-28 would be the first X-ray overluminous rotation-powered pulsar identified among all ~1400 radio pulsars known today., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. This is the first of a series of papers devoted to a global study of the photometric properties of the red stellar sequences in a complete sample of the Large Magellanic Cloud clusters, by means of near infrared array photometry. Deep J,H,Ks photometry and accurate Color Magnitude Diagrams down to K=18.5, i.e. 1.5 mag below the red He-clump, for six intermediate age clusters (namely NGC1987, NGC2108, NGC2190, NGC2209, NGC2231, NGC2249) are presented. A quantitative estimate of the population ratios (by number and luminosity) between Red Giant Branch and He-clump stars for each target cluster is provided and discussed in the framework of probing the so-called Red Giant Branch phase transition (RGB Ph-T). By using the Elson & Fall s-parameter as an age indicator, the observed RGB population shows a sharp enhancement (both in number and luminosity) at s=36. Obviously, the corresponding absolute age strictly depends on the details of theoretical models adopted to calibrate the s-parameter. Curiously, the currently available calibrations of the s-parameter in term of age based on canonical (by Elson & Fall 1988) and overshooting (Girardi et al. 1995) models provide ages that well agree within 10%, suggesting that the full development of the Red Giant Branch occurs at t=700 Myr and be a relatively fast event (delta t=300 Myr). However, the RGB Ph-T epoch derived from the overshooting calibration of the s-parameter turns out to be significantly earlier than the epoch provided by the recent evolutionary tracks by Girardi et al. (2000). A new calibration of the s-parameter based on high quality Color Magnitude Diagrams and updated models is urged to address the origin of this discrepancy and finally establish the epoch of the RGB Ph-T., Comment: ApJ, in press

We present a determination of the distance modulus of the globular cluster NGC 5904 (M 5), obtained by means of the subdwarf main-sequence fitting on the (V,V-I) color-magnitude diagram. The subdwarf sample has been selected from the HIPPARCOS catalog in a metallicity range homogeneous with the cluster ([Fe/H] \~= -1.1). Both the cluster and the subdwarfs have been observed with the same telescope+instrument+filters setup (namely, ESO-NTT equipped with the SUSI2 camera), in order to preserve homogeneity and reduce systematic uncertainties. A set of archival HST data has then been used to obtain a deep and precise ridge line. These have been accurately calibrated in the ground photometric system by using the NTT data and used to fit the cluster distance modulus. By adopting the most commonly accepted values for the reddening, E(B-V) = 0.035 and 0.03, we obtain respectively mu_0 = 14.44 +- 0.09 +- 0.07 and mu_0 = 14.41 +- 0.09 +- 0.07, in agreement with recent determinations., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We have obtained intermediate-resolution VLT spectroscopy of 75 globular cluster candidates around the Sa galaxy M104 (NGC4594). Fifty-seven candidates out to ~ 40 kpc in the halo of the galaxy were confirmed to be bona-fide globular clusters, 27 of which are new. A first analysis of the velocities provides only marginal evidence for rotation of the cluster system. From Hbeta line strengths, almost all of the clusters in our sample have ages that are consistent, within the errors, with Milky Way globular clusters. Only a few clusters may be 1-2 Gyr old, and bulge and halo clusters appear coeval. The absorption line indices follow the correlations established for the Milky Way clusters. Metallicities are derived based upon new empirical calibrations with Galactic globular clusters taking into account the non-linear behavior of some indices (e.g., Mg2). Our sample of globular clusters in NGC4594 spans a metallicity range of -2.13 < [Fe/H] < +0.26 dex, and the median metallicity of the system is [Fe/H] = -0.85. Thus, our data provide evidence that some of the clusters have super-solar metallicity. Overall, the abundance distribution of the cluster system is consistent with a bimodal distribution with peaks at [Fe/H] ~- 1.7 and -0.7. We present preliminary results of a wide field study of the globular cluster system of NGC4594, the Sombrero galaxy. The galaxy was observed in B, V, and R using the Wide Field Imager on the ESO 2.2m telescope. Using color and shape criteria to select a sample of highly probable globular cluster candidates, we measured the radial density profile of clusters out to 40' (100 Kpc) in the galaxy halo. The colors are consistent with the bimodal color distribution observed in previous studies. The red cluster candidates show a clear central concentration relative to the blue clusters. We present a new deep (down to V ~ 24) photometry of a wide region (6'x 6') around the LMC globular cluster NGC1866: our sample is complete, down to 3 mag below the brightest MS star. Detailed comparisons with various theoretical scenarios using models computed with the evolutionary code FRANEC have been done reaching the following conclusions: both standard models (i.e. computed by adopting the Schwarzschild criterion to fix the border of the convective core) and models with an enlarged convective core (overshooting) lead to a fair fit of the MS but are not able to reproduce the luminosity and/or the number of He burning giants. Models including a fraction of 30% of binaries leads to a good fit both to the MS luminosity function and to the He clump, if standards models are considered, for a visual distance modulus (m-M)v = 18.8, age t ~ 100 Myr and mass function slope alpha ~ 2.4, thus largely removing the "classical" discrepancy between observed and predicted number of stars in the He burning clump. The fit obtained with models computed with an enlarged convective core gets worse when a binary component is taken into account, because the presence of binary systems increases the existing discrepancy between the observed and predicted clump luminosity. As a consequence of this analysis, we conclude that the next step towards a proper understanding of NGC 1866, and similar clusters, must include the accurate determination of the frequency of binary systems that will be hopefully performed with the incoming Cycle 8 HST observations of NGC~1866., Comment: AASTEX 5.0, 33 pages, 35 figures.
