2. Closure effects on fatigue crack detection

Abstract

An experimental study of crack closure and its effects on the vibration of a simple beam shows that both frequency and damping changes due to the crack are influenced significantly, to the point of being obscured in some cases. The nonlinearity induced by crack closure is also explored. The results will be of value in the further development of models to detect crack damage in structures as well as in modeling crack closure and the mechanism of damping at a crack.

Abstract

Efforts in this program have focused on developing an understanding of the nature and kinetics of component interactions in hybrid material systems at elevated temperature. Previous work on the chemical interactions in tungsten fiber reinforced superalloys was expanded on to include the effect of matrix chemistry on fiber recrystallization kinetics. General studies to assess the kinetics and diffusion path behavior of metal intermetallic (W/Ni3A1) and intermetallic intermetallic (TiAl/Ni3Al) were also undertaken. A feasibility study for production of diffusion barrier layers via ion implantation were also conducted. In response to a controversy in the scientific community, the influence of fiber matrix interactions on the anomalous creep behavior of SiC/Al was investigated.

14. The Elastic Stability of Fibers in a Composite Plate*.

Abstract

The stability of unidirectional, equally spaced fibers in the plane of a composite plate is formulated by treating the fibers as beams and the matrix by the theory of generalized plane stress. Critical values of the axial load and the corresponding buckling modes are evaluated numer ically and shown graphically for various values of the parameters. Approximations leading to explicit expressions for the critical values are introduced, and restrictions on the applicability of the approximate results are determined. 16. Stress‐Strain Relation for Coated Fabrics

Abstract

A constitutive relation is formulated for coated fabrics that exhibit both elastic and inelastic, but time‐independent, responses. The nonlinear orthotropic response is represented by an elastic portion related to yarn stretch and coating shear, and an inelastic part related to crimp interchange. A method is proposed to compute the path‐dependent inelastic strain and the elastic strain for any loading once material parameters are evaluated from uniaxial tests in the principal directions of elasticity.
