Integrating the psychodynamic framework on migration with the insights provided by the community psychology perspective, the present study aimed at exploring in-depth the pre-migratory, migratory and post-migratory experiences of 20 West-African male asylum seekers hosted in Italy and, through the adoption of a qualitative and narrative method, at understanding strengths and weaknesses of using narrative methods in research with asylum seekers. In-depth open ended interviews, were administered and then analysed through the software T-LAB. Thematic clusters identified from the analysis testified the intra-psychic, relational and contextual nature of trauma. Against the background of diverse human rights violations and identity challenges involved in the migration process, post-migratory narratives revealed several social and contextual determinants which exacerbated participants’ suffering and vulnerabilities. The ambivalent function of narration in the context of forced migration encourages further reflection on the use of narrative methods in research with asylum seekers. Narrative features suggested that researchers and professionals should create more appropriate interview situations which, through the combination of different linguistic and expressive registers, can facilitate, mediate and support the narrative organisation of the experiences, which are often disrupted from severe traumatisation.

This study provides a culturally sensitive quantitative investigation aimed at assessing the post-traumatic symptomatology, post-migratory difficulties, and resilience of 36 Nigerian male asylum seekers hosted in the province of Caserta, South Italy. A survey composed by the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire-Revised (HTQ-R), the Post-Migratory Checklist (PLMD), and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) was administered to participants. Descriptive and correlation analyses were made in order to describe the mental health risk and protective factors and understand the relation between these. A linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the influence of post-migratory difficulties and resilience on PTSD. Stratified bivariate analyses were also computed to detect PTSD group and no-PTSD group differences about post-migration difficulties and resilience levels. Regression analysis showed that PMLD numbers significantly increased the risk of having PTSD. No significant effect emerged for the level of resilience. Statistically significant differences between the PTSD group and non-PTSD group in relation to post-migratory difficulties were also found. No differences in the resilience factors emerged. The results offer a glimpse into a specific ethnic group of asylum seekers and its mental health risks and protective factors, taking into consideration the specificities of their past and current life-story experiences. Clinical implications for professionals working in the field of forced migration will be outlined.

The increasing number of asylum seekers and refugees in Europe calls for even more professionals to take care of refugees' mental health. Although different studies claim that migration could be a potential risk factor for self-harming behaviours, an in-depth exploration of the presence and characteristics of self-harm in the context of asylum is needed. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review was conducted across the databases Scopus, PubMed, Web of Knowledge and PsycArticles, regarding the main features of self-harming behaviour among refugees in Europe. Twelve articles and 3 main trajectories were identified: (1) A context at-risk: self-harm and detention centres; (2) A target at-risk: self-harm and unaccompanied minors; (3) A comparison between the mental health of asylum seekers and natives. Research on this topic in Europe is still underdeveloped and disorganised. Studies have mainly carried out wider quantitative investigations on mental health, usually overlapping self-harm with suicide. Detention centres emerged as the most widely investigated context and the one with the highest risk for self-harming behaviours. Instead, unaccompanied minors emerged as a particularly vulnerable category. Research in this field should be improved, combining quantitative and qualitative methods for a deeper understanding of the meanings of self-harm across cultures.

The study presents a qualitative and culturally-sensitive investigation of the lived experiences of the forced migration of six Nigerian asylum seekers, three men and three women, hosted in Italy. Through a focus on gender identity issues, the study aimed to explore possible gender differences between participants and define their specific needs, requirements and characteristics. Overall, the gender-focused perspective through which we explored participants’ subjective experiences has enriched our understanding of their unique life stories, shedding light on the psychic dimensions as well as on the social and cultural inscriptions of their gender identity and providing insights on the different ways in which Nigerian women and men made sense of their experiences of displacement, migration, violence and trauma.

The present study aimed to explore in-depth meanings and representations that 6 refugees hosted in Italy attributed to their pre-migratory, migratory and post-migratory experiences. We developed and administered semi-structured interviews, analysed accordingly to the principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. A total of four superordinate themes emerged: The past, the case is over; The Committee as witness of my truth; Italy, Never Land; The future between agency and delegation. The past emerged as a “case over”, which participants tended to avoid talking about, while the Territorial Committee played a fundamental role as witness and legitimiser of their life stories. Positive post-migratory experiences configured a resilience, which is able to strengthen and empower refugees’ resources as well as to restore the social and community links normally destroyed by severe traumatisation. We present a qualitative study exploring the subjective meanings that five female Nigerian asylum seekers hosted in Italy attributed to their pre-migratory, migratory and post-migratory experiences, with an examination in-depth of the gender identity dimensions. We developed and administered semi-structured interviews, analyzed according to the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. On the background of the identity breakdown produced by forced migration, we highlight an inadequate integration process of the gender roles of woman and mother, generating a fracture that makes women's experiences particularly fragile. Reflections on the implication of the study and of the development of intervention programs will be outlined.

In queste note, esito dell’analisi diretta del monumento e dello studio delle carte originali del cantiere e delle lunghe controversie giudiziarie, si ripercorrono i principali aspetti della costruzione del teatro Massimo V.E. di Palermo, dai temi di valenza urbana richiesti da una città che a seguito dell’Unità doveva confrontarsi con le maggiori del Regno, a quelli più strettamente tecnici. Si esaminano le rilevanti questioni che attengono alle strutture murarie in fondazione che dovettero tenere conto delle stratificazioni storiche del sito, ma soprattutto in elevazione dove si dovettero contemperare le esigenze tecnico-statiche, di decoro e di economia. Specifica trattazione hanno le strutture metalliche negli orizzontamenti e nelle grandi coperture, con riferimenti puntuali allargati alla tumultuosa innovazione europea di quegli anni che influenzò le scelte progettuali nel teatro. Ne viene fuori un quadro che, insieme a considerazioni su aspetti costruttivi e tecnologici di rilevante interesse per l’alto livello qualitativo, anche con soluzioni audaci ed originali, testimonia l'impulso che alla scienza, alla tecnica ed all'industria locali ha dato questa grande opera, fucina di continue sperimentazioni.

The relativism of values (Werterelativismus) is a problem very central for the historicism debate, which concerned historians and phi- losophers at the beginning of the twentieth century. The historization of all knowledge and all values leads to their historical devaluation. How can values still be formulated and maintained in face of this relativization? This was the question of theorists such as Otto Hintze, Friedrich Meinecke, Max Weber and Ernst Troeltsch, as well as of the philosopher Benedetto Croce in times of emerging Fascism, that was regarded as a political and moral threat. As representatives of an intellectual and social liberalism, these academics developed their own strategies of solution, which the contribution presents and compares in its peculiarities.

There he found a concrete and vivid Hegelianism, diVering from those who reduced Hegel into a «platonizing theologian». Croce’s discussion of Marx, which is impressing in its critical but non–polemical clarity, is mainly devoted to three topics: the meaning of Historical Materialism — which is not to be seen as a philosophy of history but rather as some methodological, heuristic principle — some elements of Marxian view on economy like the thesis of equality of work and value and, finally, the relation of these two fields to socialism and justice. Contrary to Marx Croce thinks that for the realization of socialism and justice people need some kind of moral incentive.
