5. Second-Language Acquisition and Foreign Language Teaching: The Applicability of Its Findings to the Spanish Language Programs at a University on the U.S.-Mexican Border.

Abstract

An approach to foreign language instruction that emphasizes language acquisition rather than learning will emphasize the development of listening comprehension even at the expense of oral production, since research has shown that the latter does not suffer where the former is fostered. This approach tends to reduce the restrictive workings of the "affective filter." Just how powerful that filter can be is illustrated by the poor results of Spanish programs in the public schools of El Paso, Texas. In this city, students undergo traditional FLES training, which amounts to hundreds of hours of Spanish instruction over a period of six years. Still, the effect of the program is to teach failure through the repeated reinforcement of awareness of communicative incompetence. Furthermore, a linguistic continuum of native and non-native Spanish speakers exists in El Paso, rendering nearly impossible the separate placement of Anglos who would benefit from a classroom environment free from the implied intimidation of those who speak at least some Spanish at home. An aural-comprehension approach would effect a high degree of individualization, permitting real progress for each student and freeing students from what amounts to a burden to perform. (JB)

6. Historical-Psychological Portraits as Complements to Sociolinguistic Studies in Relational Bilingualism.

Abstract

Language-related attitudinal differences between two bilingual students at the University of Texas at El Paso are examined. The student designated "R" is found to exhibit language loyalty to both English and Spanish. Spanish is his language of choice chiefly when his conversational partner expects Spanish. Student "L" maintains preferential loyalty to Spanish, which he uses invariably with all Mexican- Americans. R and L were raised in similar families, schooled in apparently identical environments, and live in the same neighborhood. Standard sociolinguistic questionnaires provide no explanation for the attitudinal differences between the two. Closer examination of the students' background leads to the conclusion that the differences stem from two factors. First, though both students' mothers are virtually Spanish monolingual, R's mother left her middle-class Mexican home in her twenties, after receiving a high school education, while L's mother left her working-class home in her teens, after receiving an eighth-grade education. Second, L, unlike R, spent his first eleven years and received his elementary education in El Paso's Segundo Barrio, a slum district. These findings imply that portraits of one's subjects, based on close personal acquaintance, can be a more effective research tool than standardized questionnaires. (JB)

Abstract

The El Paso (Texas) Independent School District's district-wide program in majority-language (English) immersion is examined to determine the source of its success. The program's similarities to and differences from the Canadian immersion model are explored. The program's superior results in comparison with the same district's transitional bilingual education programs are looked at in terms of James Cummins' discussions of bilingual education. It is concluded that the immersion program's superiority over the transitional programs can be explained largely in terms of its maximal use of English and its whole language approach. The bilingual immersion program approach is recommended not as a panacea, but as a superior educational alternative. A list of 79 references is included. (MSE)

38. Spanish and English of United States Hispanos: A Critical, Annotated, Linguistic Bibliography.

Abstract

This linguistically oriented bibliography lists 675 items that relate in part or in fall to the speech and language behavior of U.S. residents or citizens of Hispanic background. The bibliography, intended as a continuation of Hensley C. Woodbridge's 1954 study, includes material completed or published through December 1974, but generally excludes items not available through ordinary channels. Most of the items are annotated fully, many critically and at some length. In addition to examining all items that treat the phonology, grammar, and lexicon of natively-spoken U.S. Spanish, the bibliographers have attempted to include all lingusitic studies of U.S. Hispano English and all studies of code-switching. The major organizational categories are: (1) U.S. in general; (2) Chicanos in general; (3) Puerto Ricans on the U.S. mainland; (4) Cubans; (5) Islenos (Canary Islanders in Louisiana); (6) Peninsulares (Spaniards); and (7) Sephardic Jews. When applicable, the sub-categories are: (1) bibliography; (2) comprehensive/general studies; (3) Spanish phonology; (4) Spanish grammar; (5) Spanish lexicon; (6) Onomastics; (7) English influence on Spanish; (8) Spanish influence on English; (9) Spanish influence on Amerindian languages; and (10) code-switching. 39. Teaching Spanish to Native Speakers of Spanish: A Collection of Model Syllabi.

Abstract

Eighteen model syllabi are presented for teaching Spanish to native speakers of Spanish. The syllabi were produced during a summer institute, entitled "Teaching Spanish to Native Speakers of Spanish," in order to meet the unique language situation of U.S. hispanophone students. Traditional lower division Spanish-as-a-foreiqn-language courses are totally inappropriate for the fluent or almost fluent native speaker. At the same time these U.S. hispanophone students have had little exposure to written Spanish since they have been educated from the early grades in English. The need for specially-designed sequences of one to four semesters of language instruction to develop the natively-acquired language resources the students bring to the classroom led to the summer institute program. The institute brought together individuals already involved in teaching Spanish to native speakers. The central objective of the institute was the improvement of curriculum not only at participants' institutions but also across the nations. (SW)

Abstract

This is a supplementary dictionary of the Spanish spoken by Chicanos in the states of Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Florida. The nearly 8,000 entries represent a compilation of Chicano words and phrases not typically found in standard dictionaries. Items are listed alphabetically in Spanish, followed by an English definition. This is intended, however, as a supplement to full-length dictionaries of standard Spanish. Appendices contain proverbs and sayings, a brief discussion on verbs ending in -iar and -ear, and a bibliography. (Author/AM)
