15. Digital Marketing Strategies and Profitability in the Agri-Food Industry: Resource Efficiency and Value Chains.

Abstract

Agriculture is essential to any country's economy. Agriculture is crucial not only for feeding a country's population but also for its impact on other businesses. The paradox of agri-food companies generating substantial profits despite seemingly high product prices is explored in this article, focusing on the role of digital marketing within the agri-food industry. Enhanced digital marketing performance leads to efficient advertising campaigns, through reduced advertising costs and increased resource efficiency. To do so, the authors collected web analytical data from five established agri-food firms with the highest market capitalization. Then, linear regression and correlation analyses were used, followed by the utilization of fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) modeling. The analysis revealed that increased traffic through search sources is associated with reduced advertising costs. Additionally, enhanced website engagement contributes to lower advertising expenses, emphasizing the optimization of the user experience. However, it has been discovered that allocating funds for social media advertising eventually results in higher expenses with higher website-abandoning rate. Ultimately, successful management of the balance between product costs and profitability in the agri-food sector lies on the increased use of search sources and greatly reducing the use of social media sources. Abstract

Objective: The presence of micropapillary and solid adenocarcinoma patterns leads to a worse survival and a significantly higher tendency to recur. This study aims to assess the impact of pT descriptor combined with the presence of high-grade components on long-term outcomes in early-stage lung adenocarcinomas. Methods: We retrospectively collected data of consecutive resected pT1-T3N0 lung adenocarcinoma from nine European Thoracic Centers. All patients who underwent a radical resection with lymph-node dissection between 2014 and 2017 were included. Differences in Overall Survival (OS) and Disease-Free Survival (DFS) and possible prognostic factors associated with outcomes were evaluated also after performing a propensity score matching to compare tumors containing non-high-grade and high-grade patterns. Results: Among 607 patients, the majority were male and received a lobectomy. At least one high-grade histological pattern was seen in 230 cases (37.9%), of which 169 solid and 75 micropapillary. T1a-b-c without high-grade pattern had a significant better prognosis compared to T1a-b-c with high-grade pattern (p = 0.020), but the latter had similar OS compared to T2a (p = 0.277). Concurrently, T1a-b-c without micropapillary or solid patterns had a significantly better DFS compared to those with high-grade patterns (p = 0.034), and it was similar to T2a (p = 0.839). Multivariable analysis confirms the role of T descriptor according to high-grade pattern both for OS (p = 0.024; HR 1.285 95% CI 1.033–1.599) and DFS (p = 0.003; HR 1.196, 95% CI 1.054–1.344, respectively). These results were confirmed after the propensity score matching analysis. Conclusions: pT1 lung adenocarcinomas with a high-grade component have similar prognosis of pT2a tumors.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Adenocarcinoma patterns could be grouped based on clinical behaviors: low- (lepidic), intermediate- (papillary or acinar), and high-grade (micropapillary and solid). We analyzed the impact of the second predominant pattern (SPP) on disease-free survival (DFS). Methods: We retrospectively collected data of surgically resected stage I and II adenocarcinoma. Selection criteria: anatomical resection with lymphadenectomy and pathological N0. Pure adenocarcinomas and mucinous subtypes were excluded. Recurrence rate and factors affecting DFS were analyzed according to the SPP focusing on intermediate-grade predominant pattern adenocarcinomas. Results: Among 270 patients, 55% were male. The mean age was 68.3 years. SPP pattern appeared as follows: lepidic 43.0%, papillary 23.0%, solid 14.4%, acinar 11.9%, and micropapillary 7.8%. The recurrence rate was 21.5% and 5-year DFS was 71.1%. No difference in DFS was found according to SPP (p =.522). In patients with high-grade SPP, the percentage of SPP, age, and tumor size significantly influenced DFS (p =.016). In patients with lepidic SPP, size, male gender, and lymph-node sampling (p =.005; p =.014; p =.038, respectively) significantly influenced DFS. Conclusions: The impact of SPP on DFS is not homogeneous in a subset of patients with the intermediate-grade predominant patterns. The influence of high-grade SPP on DFS is related to its proportion in the tumor.

Abstract

Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 470(4), 4608 - 4617 (2017). doi:10.1093/mnras/stx1405, B1957+20 is a millisecond pulsar located in a black-widow-type compact binary system with a low-mass stellar companion. The interaction of the pulsar wind with the companion star wind and/or the interstellar plasma is expected to create plausible conditions for acceleration of electrons to TeV energies and subsequent production of very high-energy γ-rays in the inverse Compton process. We performed extensive observations with the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes (MAGIC) telescopes of B1957+20. We interpret results in the framework of a few different models, namely emission from the vicinity of the millisecond pulsar, the interaction of the pulsar and stellar companion wind region or bow shock nebula. No significant steady very high-energy γ-ray emission was found. We derived a 95 per cent confidence level upper limit of 3.0 × 10$^{−12}$ cm$^{−2}$ s$^{−1}$ on the average γ-ray emission from the binary system above 200 GeV. The upper limits obtained with the MAGIC constrain, for the first time, different models of the high-energy emission in B1957+20. In particular, in the inner mixed wind nebula model with mono-energetic injection of electrons, the acceleration efficiency of electrons is constrained to be below ∼2–10 per cent of the pulsar spin-down power. For the pulsar emission, the obtained upper limits for each emission peak are well above the exponential cut-off fits to the Fermi-LAT data, extrapolated to energies above 50 GeV. Abstract

Intraperitoneal injectable anesthetics are often used to achieve surgical anesthesia in laboratory mice. Because bolus redosing of injectable anesthetics can cause unacceptably high mortality, we evaluated intraperitoneal continuous-rate infusion (CRI) of ketamine with or without xylazine for maintaining surgical anesthesia for an extended period of time. Anesthesia was induced in male C57BL/6J mice by using ketamine (80 mg/kg) and xylazine (8 mg/kg) without or with acepromazine at 0.1 mg/kg or 0.5 mg/kg. At 10 min after induction, CRI for 90 min was initiated and comprised 25%, 50%, or 100% of the initial ketamine dose per hour or 50% of the initial doses of both ketamine and xylazine. Anesthetic regimens were compared on the basis of animal immobility, continuous surgical depth of anesthesia as determined by the absence of a pedal withdrawal reflex, and mortality. Consistent with previous studies, the response to anesthetics was highly variable. Regimens that provided the longest continuous surgical plane of anesthesia with minimal mortality were ketamine-xylazine-acepromazine (0.1 mg/kg) with CRI of 100% of the initial ketamine dose and ketamine-xylazine-acepromazine (0.5 mg/kg) with CRI of 50% of the initial ketamine and xylazine doses. In addition, heart rate and respiratory rate did not increase consistently in response to a noxious stimulus during CRI anesthesia, even when mice exhibited a positive pedal withdrawal reflex, suggesting that these parameters are unreliable indicators of anesthetic depth during ketamine-xylazine anesthesia in mice. We conclude that intraperitoneal CRI anesthesia in mice prolongs injectable anesthesia more consistently and with lower mortality than does bolus redosing.

50. The Evaluation of the Containment Efficacy of Semi-Rigid Isolators for Housing Cages of Laboratory Animals Infected With BSL-3 Agents

Abstract

Research animals models infected with Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) agents need to be housed in specialized biocontainment caging. Most of these specialized cages have input and exhaust that is high efficiency particulate air filtered and sealed to prevent escape of the BSL-3 agent. An alternative to the use of the above BSL-3 biocontainment caging is the use of a flexible film or modified semi-rigid plastic film isolator that has its own high efficiency particulate air–filtered input and exhaust and is sealed with respect to the animal room environment, thus preventing BSL-3 agent escape. Standard caging can be housed within such an isolator. Computational fluid dynamics was used to evaluate the integrity of modified semi-rigid isolators for containment of aerosolized BSL-3 agents. Three isolators were located inside an animal BSL-3 room to provide an extra tier of protection and to permit different infectious studies within the same room while reducing or eliminating the risk of cross-contamination. The isolators were sized to house caging for rabbits and smaller non-human primates such as marmosets, African greens, and macaques. Multiple case studies of failure scenarios were investigated, including isolator breaches through the plastic membrane seam separation and rips, and exhaust fan failure. Breaching the level of containment provided by the isolators required the improbable simultaneous event of a plastic membrane rip in addition to the rare malfunction of the back-up exhaust fans. Each isolator was equipped with 2 blower motors connected in parallel to a common exhaust plenum and a battery backup. Even with this rare double (simultaneous) event, the animal BSL-3 room air exhaust system was able to contain the few droplets released in the simulated computational fluid dynamics breach. The modified semi-rigid isolators with negative airflow proved safe and effective for aerosol studies using BSL-3 agents, even in the unlikely event of a breach in containment.
