2. Critical factors of CRM implementation in a higher education institution

Abstract

In an era marked by intense competition for students, partnerships and funding, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are increasingly turning to Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and customer-oriented strategies traditionally employed by the business sector. This shift underscores the critical need to understand the factors that underpin successful CRM implementation within the academic context. Focusing on a Finnish university as a case study, this research explores the essential elements that contribute to the effective adoption and utilisation of CRM systems in HEIs. Through a comprehensive theoretical review and qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, the study unveils that the cornerstone of successful CRM implementation lies in management support and commitment, personnel and organisational culture, the introduction of new processes and practices tailored to educational settings and measurement and usage monitoring. These findings not only shed light on the specific dynamics of CRM in higher education but also offer a foundation for HEIs to refine their CRM strategies in alignment with their unique goals and challenges. By delineating these critical success factors, the study contributes to the broader discourse on enhancing institutional competitiveness and stakeholder engagement in the academic sector.

Abstract

Customers' expectations for speed, reliability and convenience are growing relentlessly. Therefore, companies need to distance themselves from traditional supply chain thinking and instead consider value nets, value networks and business ecosystems composed of several companies and multiple interlinked value chains. In this study, the concept of business ecosystems and their applicability have been examined in the context of bioeconomy. The objective of this paper is to describe the creation process of a healthy bioeconomy business ecosystem which was analysed via a descriptive and participatory case study. The case bioeconomy business ecosystem was created based on value networks with a heavy emphasis placed on the principles of the circular economy. This study concludes that there are four key aspects to consider in the creation of bioeconomy business ecosystems: the significance of market pull, the importance of physical proximity, the higher relevance of strong relationships and avoiding compromises that weaken process efficiency. Abstract

Byline: Pekka Tervonen, Joonas Alapiha, Harri Haapasalo This study addresses current status of ESSQ management and integration in a steel production organisation. We benchmark maturity levels with the chosen leading Finnish international companies. The examination has been done in compliance with the applied maturity model developed by the target corporation. ESSQ management in terms of leadership and innovation in Ruukki was assessed to be in the lowest, roll-over, level. Control and monitoring systems were found to be at the second lowest level, crawling. When examining the benchmarked companies through the ESSQ framework, we found that a similar framework cannot be found in any other company as such; instead, operations are distributed under different organisations. The ESSQ management framework was found to be new to other companies. Although many sources criticise system-based development, the results of this study indicate that it is nevertheless an efficient way to develop operations.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop an operating model for the purpose of utilising an idea bank in the development of business operations. The study was carried out as a constructive interview survey. The study examines the development proposal activity in a company and the operating model which is created in this study includes a harmonised electronic recording system for development proposals. The study clarifies the existing models and procedures related to the employees’ idea and suggestion schemes and continuous improvement. The idea bank model includes a description of the requirements set by development proposal activity to the model itself and the incorporated management system. The objectives of the idea bank model are to maintain the processes needed for the development proposal activity, and to be a tool towards harmonising and organising development proposal activities. The idea bank model can be used to record different kinds of development proposals into a common operating model and system. The operating model consists of making a development proposal, handling and processing it, the implementation, reward, recording and retrieving of data related to the proposal and follow-up. The idea bank model may facilitate the employees’ participation in development and innovation activities, as well as sharing knowledge and operating methods. The model allows development activities to be directed according to the company's needs, as well as the monitoring and analysis of operations. In addition, it enables the employees’ know-how to be recorded in order to create a resource of data for the organisation.

Abstract

Thesis of this master's thesis is public areas in cadastral system. This paper explores the legislative history of formation of public areas. This research emphasizes the active legislation's means of implementing the public areas in a municipality. Land ownership is addressed from the perspective of public areas. A process chart and work instructions illustrating the formation of public areas has been put together at the City Survey Department of city of Vantaa. As a part of this master's thesis the process chart and the related work instructions were brought up to date. Another objective of this work is to develop alternative work methods concerning the formation of public areas. A proposal including a single land surveyor taking the responsibility of the forming of public areas at a time is made on the paper. This responsibility could last for one year at a time for an example. The benefits of the described system would involve that the forming of public areas would be constant throughout the year, and the amount of public areas formed per year would be maximized. An alternative method would be to continue as is, with a yearly goal of public areas formed set for every surveyor. As a part of this master's thesis the persons responsible for real estate formation in Helsinki and Espoo were interviewed and inquiries were sent to 30 municipalities. Work methods concerning the formation of public areas and the problems related to them were examined in the municipalities with the help of the inquiries. Different systems used in the municipalities are introduced based on the results of the interviews and the inquiries., Diplomityön aiheena ovat yleiset alueet kiinteistöjärjestelmässä. Työssä käydään läpi yleisten alueiden muodostumisen lainsäädännön historiaa, mutta tutkimus painottuu voimassa olevan lainsäädännön keinoihin, joita kunnassa käytetään yleisten alueiden toteuttamiseen. Maanomistusta käsitellään yleisten alueiden näkökulmasta. Vantaan kaupungin mittausosastolla on laadittu prosessikaavio sekä työohjeet yleisen alueen lohkomiseen. Osana tätä työtä prosessikaavio ajantasaistettiin sekä siihen liittyviä työohjeita päivitettiin. Tavoitteena on myös kehittää vaihtoehtoisia työtapoja yleisten alueiden lohkomisiin. Työssä esitetään työtapa, jossa yksi Vantaan kaupungin mittausosaston toimitusinsinööreistä vuorollaan vastaisi vuorollaan yleisten alueiden lohkomisista. Vuoro olisi vaihtuva esimerkiksi vuoden valein. Järjestelmän etuna on, että yleisiä alueita tulee lohkotuksi tasaisesti koko vuoden ajan ja toimitusmäärät saataisiin optimoitua mahdollisimman suureksi. Toinen vaihtoehto on jatkaa nykyisellä menettelyllä, jossa jokaiselle toimitusinsinöörille asetetaan vuosittaiset kappalemäärätavoitteet yleisten alueiden toimituksiin. Työtä varten haastateltiin Helsingin ja Espoon kiinteistönmuodostuksesta vastaavia henkilöitä ja lähetettiin kysely 30 kuntaan. Kyselyn avulla selvitettiin yleisten alueiden lohkomisten työtapoja ja yleisten alueiden toimituksiin liittyviä ongelmia muissa kunnissa. Haastatteluiden ja kyselyjen tulosten perusteella esitetään yleisten alueiden lohkomisissa käytettyjä kuntien erilaisia käytäntöjä.
