14. Ammonia tolerance of Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus: Implications for cost reduction in a skipjack pole-and-line fishery

Abstract

The Japanese anchovy Engraulis japonicus is used as live bait in skipjack pole-and-line fisheries. Japanese anchovies are transported to fishing grounds by fishing boats on voyages that can take from 4 to 50 days. Because ammonia excreted by Japanese anchovies might affect their survival during transportation, fishers empirically attempt to maintain them in healthy condition by exchanging water aboard ship holding tanks at a rate of 160–500 % volume h−1. To develop protocols for more efficient and cost-effective transportation of Japanese anchovies, we evaluated their ammonia tolerance and effects of stocking density and variable water exchange on their survival. We estimated median lethal concentrations (with 95 % confidence intervals) of un-ionized ammonia nitrogen (UIAN), at which 50 % of Japanese anchovies had died within 24 h and 48 h, as 0.770 (0.751–0.790) mg l−1 and 0.706 (0.661–0.750) mg l−1 at 15 °C and 0.634 (0.466–0.802) mg l−1 and 0.450 (0.379–0.521) mg l−1 at 25 °C, respectively. While the UIAN concentration increased to lethal levels and severe fish mortality (dependent on stocking density) occurred at 25 °C with no water exchange, the UIAN concentration could be maintained within non-lethal levels at 25 °C and with a one-third water exchange every 12 h. Our results suggest that present-day empirically deduced water exchange rates applied aboard commercial vessels in holding tanks of Japanese anchovies could be reduced, implying a possible cost reduction for the skipjack pole-and-line fisheries

Abstract

Laboratory behavioural observation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis were conducted to examine whether the movement of the elongated dorsal and pelvic spines changed the hydrodynamic drag in white-streaked grouper Epinephelus ongus larvae. The behavioural observation in the tank revealed that the larvae extended the dorsal and pelvic spines during passive transport and retracted during swimming; the angles of the dorsal and pelvic spines in relation to the anteroposterior axis were larger during the passive transport (mean±s.d. = 28・84±14・27 and 20・35±15・05°) than those during the swimming (mean±s.d. = 2・59±5・55 and 0・32±6・49°). The CFD analysis indicated that the relative hydrodynamic drag acting on the larvae was approximately 1・25 times higher when the spines were extended (passive transport) than when the spines were retracted (swimming), suggesting that the E. ongus larvae have an ability to adjust their hydrodynamic drag depending on the behavioural context. Abstract

Abstract: Most behavioral studies on hermaphroditic fishes have focused on small‐sized species, which are tractable for research. Although many species of large hermaphroditic fishes are important fishery resources, their proximate mechanisms (visual, chemical and/or behavioral cues) in the social regulation of sex change have not been determined. Determination of these would inform resource management and aquaculture. In order to get closer to understanding the proximate mechanisms underlying the social regulation of female‐to‐male sex change in large hermaphroditic fishes, this study reports situations that induced female‐to‐male sex change in black‐spot tuskfish, Choerodon schoenleinii, a species of large protogynous fish, in massive laboratory tanks. The situations differed in the possibility of male‐to‐female tactile contact and in the group sex ratio, enabling us to infer plausible proximate mechanisms underlying sex change induction. Tactile contact between individuals is suspected to be closely related to the incidence of female‐to‐male sex change in C. schoenleinii. Visual and chemical cues alone may be insufficient to inhibit such sex changes. Male‐to‐female tactile contact may have an important influence on female‐to‐male sex change, i.e., inhibition of this sex change, in this species. The effect of sex ratio of a social group on the incidence of sex change may be due to the relative frequency and intensity of male tactile contact with each female, which may vary with the number of females. Abstract

The cause of abnormal musculature on both sides of the same myotome in artificially cultured seven-band grouper Epinephelus septemfasciatus (Thunberg) larvae remains unclear. We evaluated the effect of three factors: changes in temperature (between 22 and 24°C), disinfection with ozonated seawater (0.3 mg TROs L−1, 1 min), and hypoxia (22 or 14% saturation) during the early (20 h post-fertilization, hpf) and mid- (24 hpf) somite stages on trunk muscular development in larval seven-band grouper. The thermal regimes and disinfection with ozonated seawater had no effect on muscle development ( P > 0.05, G-test). In contrast, exposure to hypoxia during both the early and mid-somite stages increased the incidence of abnormal musculature in the trunk ( P < 0.01, G-test). These larvae had abnormal musculature on both sides of the trunk. In addition, the number of abnormal myotomes differed among these larvae. Exposure in the early and mid-somite stages resulted in the highest frequency of abnormalities in the 11th and 13th myotome respectively. Our results suggest that hypoxia during somitogenesis can lead to abnormal muscle development in the trunk of artificially cultured seven-band grouper larva. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The effect of docosahexaenoic acid ( DHA) on the growth performance, survival and swim bladder inflation of larval Seriola dumerili during the rotifer feeding period was investigated in two feeding experiments. Amberjack larvae at 3 day post hatching were fed rotifers enriched with (1) freshwater C hlorella (Chlo), (2) a mixture (2:1, v/v) of Chlo and DHA-enriched C hlorella ( DHA-Chlo), (3) DHA-Chlo and (4) DHA-Chlo and commercial DHA emulsion, in triplicate for 7 days. The average DHA contents of the rotifers were 0.0, 0.4, 1.0 and 1.9 mg g−1 DM respectively. The survival rate was improved by the enrichment of rotifers with DHA-Chlo alone, and DHA-Chlo and emulsion. Growth and swim bladder inflation of fish fed rotifers enriched with DHA-Chlo were significantly ( P < 0.05) improved, however, with increased levels of DHA further improvement was not found. DHA content in the larval whole body proportionally increased with the DHA level in the rotifers. These results suggest that DHA enrichment of rotifers is effective to improve the growth, survival rate and swim bladder inflation of amberjack larvae. The DHA requirement of amberjack larvae is estimated to be 1.5 mg g−1 on a dry matter basis of rotifers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: Embryonic and morphological development of larvae and juveniles of the amberjack,Seriola dumerili Risso, are described using specimens raised at Yaeyama Station (Ishigaki Island, Okinawa Pref.), Japan Sea Farming Association. The specimens obtained from brood fish (3 females, 3 males) were treated with gonadotropin and spawned on 6th of April 1987. The eggs of amberjack are pelagic, spherical in shape and 1.01–1.17 mm in diameter. The yolk is roughly segmented and has a single oil globule 0.22–0.24 mm in diameter. The perivitelline space is narrow. During development, a few melanophores and no xanthophores were observed on yolk. Hatching took place 35 hrs. 15 min. after spawning out at temperatures 23.1–23.7°C. The newly hatched larvae were 2.84–3.04mm in TL with 27 (13+14) myomeres and an oil globule anteriorly situated beyond the head. 3 days after hatching 4.00 mm TL, the mouth opened. 10 days after hatching 4.26 mm TL, small denticles appeared on the margin of the upper jaw and there were 1 anterior and 2 posterior preopecular spines. At 5.96mm TL, notochord was slightly flexed. Caudal, dorsal and anal fins with rudiments of rays appeared at 8.00 mm TL. The specific numbers of all fin rays and spines were obtained in a juvenile 9.60 mm TL. In a juvenile 34.25 mm TL, 54 days after hatching, the characteristic brown band of amberjack had appeared on head. Some notable changes in relative growth were observed at 5 mm and 15 mm in TL.
