FERTIGATION , *RADICCHIO , *CHICORY , *POULTRY manure , *ICEBERGS , *FERTILIZERS , *LETTUCE - Abstract
The aim of the study is to investigate low-cost sources of organic-allowed inputs for iceberg lettuce and chicory radicchio vegetative growth. Experiments were conducted under protected cultivation. The following treatments were used: boiled chicken manure for fertigation (2.5; 5; 7.5; and 10%); Bokashi as a mineral fertilizer N-P-K (4-14-8) in the substrate; and the control (water). The total leaf biomass (TLB) (g), commercial leaf biomass (CLB) (g), plant diameter (DIA) (cm), plant height (HEI) (cm), number of leaves (NL) (for lettuce only), and chlorophyll index (CLO) (Falker index) were evaluated. The mineral fertilizer provided the highest means of production variables for both lettuce and chicory. For iceberg lettuce, the means of an organic treatment were similar to the mineral fertilizer only for the CLO variable and for the NL in BCM 10%. For radicchio chicory, the organic treatments had similar means to the mineral fertilizer for the DIA and CLO. Only Bokashi had a similar mean to mineral for the HEI variable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

STRAWBERRY tree , *BORDEAUX mixture , *VEGETABLE oils , *TANACETUM vulgare , *COTTONSEED oil , *MYCOSPHAERELLA - Abstract
Plant extracts and oils were assessed for strawberry leaf spot control in organic strawberry in the open field. For first cycle, treatments were extracts of rosemary (10 %) (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.) (0.01 %), rue (Ruta graveolens L.) (10 %), turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) (1 %), Bordeaux mixture (1 %), cotton (1.5 %) and canola oils (1 %), and water (control). For second cycle, Rosemary (20 %), rue (20 %), turmeric (2 %), canola oil (2 %), and water were used as treatments. A completely randomized block design with five replications was used. An analysis of variance was performed on the severity data, AUDPC and fruit production means were compared by the Scott-Knott and Tukey tests at 5 % probability for first and second cycles, respectively. Canola oil (1 and 2 %) reduced disease symptoms in both cycles. Rosemary and rue extracts reduced just when disease severity was low. Cotton and canola oils and rosemary, rue and turmeric extracts increased strawberry fruit production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The occurrence of Gargaphia lunulata (Mayr) (Hemiptera: Tingidae) was observed in leaves of four host plants: rue (Ruta graveolens L.) and jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC ) in an urban residential garden, in the municipality of Rio Branco, Acre State, Brazil and Crotalaria spectabilis (L.), jack bean and okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) in a greenhouse, in the municipality of Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil. The colonies were found exclusively on the abaxial face of the leaves, causing chlorosis, wilting and early senescence of the same. Because G. lunulata is considered to be an important passion fruit pest in Brazil, the planting of the mentioned plant species, in intercropping or near to passion fruit crops, would not be recommended, since they could serve as plant species inoculum to passion fruit cultivation. Therefore, the occurrence of G. lunulata associated to R. graveolens and jack bean in Acre State; and C. spectabilis, jack bean, and okra, in Paraná State is record for the first time. In addition, the present work reports the first occurrence of this tingid to the States of Acre and Paraná and reports two new hosts for this insect, R. graveolens and C. spectabillis in Brazil., Foi observada a ocorrência de colônias do percevejo-de-renda Gargaphia lunulata (Mayr) (Hemiptera: Tingidae) em folhas de quatro plantas hospedeiras: arruda (Ruta graveolens L.) e feijão-de-porco (Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC), em jardim residencial urbano, no Município de Rio Branco, AC e crotalária, Crotalaria spectabilis Roth, feijão-de-porco e quiabeiro (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench), em casa de vegetação, no Município de Londrina, PR.

- Abstract
The twospotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch is one of the most important pests on greenhouses/high tunnels worldwide. We evaluated effects of Chinese chive grown under the wooden structure which supports the bags used of strawberry grown, in two high tunnels from November 2016 to January 2017. TSSM mobile forms and number of eggs were counted on strawberry leaves. Five plants were randomly chosen on each plot. TSSM populations on strawberry leaves were assessed with magnifying glass (10 ×). Reductions were observed on three of eight assessments on TSSM mobile forms. On one date was observed reductions on mean number of TSSM eggs. Cumulate mite days overall data of TSSM mobile forms from two high tunnels reveals a reduction with intercrop. On the other hand, number of eggs was not altered. Results suggest that Chinese chive intercropped can reduce TSSM populations on strawberry high tunnels., O ácaro-rajado, Tetranychus urticae Koch, é uma das mais importantes pragas em casas de vegetação no mundo.

- Abstract
For evaluating resistance of experimental and commercial popcorn hybrids to Exserohilum turcicum, the causal agent of Northern leaf blight of maize, an experiment was carried out in randomized block design with four replications, in Maringá, State of Paraná, during the 2007/2008 cropping season. An additional objective was to compare the efficiency of using a single disease assessment compared to several assessments for discriminating resistance. The incidence and severity of the disease, evaluated four times during the season, were used for estimating the area under the disease progress curve of incidence (AUDPCI) and severity (AUDPCS). The last assessment of incidence and severity, AUDPCI and AUDPCS were used to compare the genotypes by analysis of variance and Scott-Knott test. Spearman’s rank correlations among incidence, severity, AUDPCI and AUDPCS values were estimated to describe their associations. Significant differences (P≤0.001) of resistance were verified among genotypes. The hybrids UEM129, UEM145, UEM140, UEM116 and UEM101 presented the lowest levels of disease and were considered the most resistance genotypes. These genotypes overcame UEM109, UEM153 and IAC 112, which are considered resistant standards and, Zélia and Jade, considered susceptible. The correlation analysis showed that the assessment of incidence and severity at dough stage did not provide same data as AUDPCI and AUDPCI for discriminating resistance to E. turcicum, Para avaliar a resistência de híbridos experimentais e comerciais de milho-pipoca à Exserohilum turcicum, agente causal da helmintosporiose do milho, implementou-se um ensaio em delineamento de blocos completos com tratamentos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, em Maringá, Paraná, na safra 2007/2008.
