Abstract

An environmental survey was carried out in order to provide an adequate and updated assessment of the radiological impact that the decommissioning operations of the Garigliano NNP may have procured to the environment of the surrounding area. Some isotopes of uranium (235U, 236U, 238U) and plutonium (239Pu, 240Pu) and some {\gamma}-emitter radionuclides (60Co, 137Cs and 40K,) were measured to quantify the possible contamination and identify the origin source. Actinides isotopes were measured with the AMS technique that is able to detect elements in traces and reach sensitivity that cannot be obtained with other methods. The results show that the anthropogenic component is essentially due to the atmospheric fallout and no contamination can be charged to the NPP. Abstract

The present work concerns data of three campaigns carried out during the last twenty years in the plain of the Garigliano river surrounding the Garigliano Nuclear Power Plant (GNPP), which is located in Southern Italy and shut down in 1979. Moreover, some data from surveys held in the eighties, across the Chernobyl accident, have been taken in account. The results for the soil samples, in particular for 137Cs and 236U specific activity, were analyzed for their extension in space and in time. Some of the problems related to the classical analysis of environmental radiological data (non-normal distribution of the values, small number of sample points, multiple comparison and presence of values lesser than the minimum detectable activity) have been overcome with the use of Bayesian methods. The scope of the paper is threefold: (1) to introduce the data of the last campaign held in the Garigliano plain; (2) to insert these data in a larger spatio-temporal frame; (3) to show how the Bayesian approach can be applied to radiological environmental surveys, stressing out its advantages over other approaches, using the data of the campaigns. It results that (i) no new contribution there was in the last decades, (ii) specific activity values of the area surrounding the GNPP are consistent with those obtained in other farther areas, (iii) the effective depletion half-life factor for 137Cs is much lower than the half-life of the radionuclide., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, presented at the Envira 2019 Conference, to be published in Journal of Environmental Radioactivity (2020)

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive analysis and radiocarbon dating of historical mortar and plaster samples from the San Salvatore—Massino Visconti complex in Piedmont, Northern Italy. Mortar samples and one charcoal sample were collected from various areas within the complex's lower chapels. Samples were selected and characterized by means of a multi-analytical approach in order to draw inferences about their compositional, mineralogical, and microstructural features. The identification of hydromagnesite and magnesite in the mortar samples suggests the usage of magnesian binder mortar, potentially affecting radiocarbon dating due to its slower carbonation kinetics when compared to calcitic mortars. To mitigate this effect, a purification method was developed involving thermal treatment at 550 °C to isolate datable binding fractions. The results yielded reliable radiocarbon ages consistent with historical context, shedding light on construction materials dating from the 12th to 16th centuries. The study also challenges previous notions by demonstrating the feasibility of radiocarbon dating for magnesian mortars, opening new perspectives for dating such materials. Abstract

The LEGEND collaboration has been developing a 76Ge-based double-beta decay experimental program where precise radiopurity measurements of ultraclean materials are crucial. Ultralow concentrations of thorium and uranium, the main contributors to the detector background via their decay products, can be determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Here we shall present recent developments in thorium and uranium mass spectrometry methods, together with basics of separation chemistry applied to process different samples. The new possibilities to measure 232Th and 238U by ICPMS and AMS at the Comenius University in Bratislava are discussed as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

12C fusion reactions are among the most important in stellar evolution since they determine the destiny of massive stars. Over the past fifty years, massive efforts have been done to measure these reactions at low energies. However, existing data present several discrepancies between sets and large uncertainties specially at the lowest energies. Factors such as beam/environmental backgrounds, extremely low cross sections and insufficient knowledge of the reaction mechanism contribute to these problems. Recently, the ERNA collaboration measured the 12C+12C reactions at Ec.m. = 2.51 - 4.36 MeV with energy steps between 10 and 25 keV in the centre of mass. Representing the smallest energy steps to date. In these measurements, beam induced background was minimised and S-factors for the proton and alpha channels were calculated. Results indicate that a possible explanation for the discrepancies between data sets is the wrongly assumed constant branching ratios and isotropical angular distributions. Given the excellent performance of the detectors for low energy measurements, a collaboration with the LUNA group (LNGS) has started. Background measurements underground are being performed and results indicate it could be possible to measure the 12C+12C reactions directly into the Gamow Window.

Abstract

We discuss the influence of the 12C(alpha,gamma)16O$ reaction rate on the central He burning of stars in the mass range 0.8-25 Msun, as well as its effects on the explosive yields of a 25 Msun star of solar chemical composition. We find that the central He burning is only marginally affected by a change in this cross section within the currently accepted uncertainty range. The only (important) quantity which varies significantly is the amount of C left by the He burning. Since the C(alpha,gamma)16O is efficient in a convective core, we have also analyzed the influence of the convective mixing in determining the final C abundance left by the central He burning. Our main finding is that the adopted mixing scheme does not influence the final C abundance provided the outer border of the convective core remains essentially fixed (in mass) when the central He abundance drops below about 0.1 dex by mass fraction; vice versa, even a slight shift (in mass) of the border of the convective core during the last part of the central He burning could appreciably alter the final C abundance. Hence, we stress that it is wiser to discuss the advanced evolutionary phases as a function of the C abundance left by the He burning rather than as a function of the efficiency of the 12C(alpha,gamma)16O reaction rate. Only a better knowledge of this cross section and/or the physics of the convective motions could help in removing the degeneracy between these two components. 12C+12C reactions are crucial in the evolution of massive stars and explosive scenarios. The measurement of these reactions at astrophysical energies is very challenging due to their extremely small cross sections, and the presence of beam induced background originated by the natural 1,2H contaminants in the C targets. In addition, the many discrepancies between different data sets and the complicated resonant structure of the cross sections make the extrapolation to low energies very uncertain. Recently, we performed a direct measurement of the 12C+12C reactions at the CIRCE Laboratory in Italy. Results from a study on target contamination were used, allowing us to measure cross sections at Ec.m. =2.51 − 4.36 MeV with 10-25 keV energy steps. Two stage ΔE-Erest detectors were used for unambiguous particle identification. Branching ratios of individual particle groups were found to vary significantly with energy and angular distributions were also found to be anisotropic, which could be a potential explanation for the discrepancies observed among different data sets.

Abstract

For the ultrasensitive determination of 244Pu by accelerator mass spectrometry, a suitable methodology was developed at the IFIN-HH AMS laboratory. Alpha spectrometry was used to verify the performance of the radiochemical procedure for plutonium extraction, including preparation of alpha sources by electrodeposition and microprecipitation. The chemical yield for plutonium extraction from environmental samples was found to be reasonable (∼86%) for our purposes. The 244Pu AMS measurements were performed using two AMS systems, 1 MV (IFIN-HH) and 3 MV (CIRCE) accelerators. The spectra collected using chemical blanks clearly show the zero background when measuring mass 244, while a total measurement efficiency for both systems of the order of 10−4 was estimated. Regarding the concentration of 244Pu per gram of sediment, we obtained hundreds of atto-grams per gram for the sediment of Bikini Atoll, while for the sediment of the Pacific Ocean the level is of the order of several tens of atto-grams per gram. In addition, we determined isotopic ratios for 240Pu/239Pu and 244Pu/239Pu for both certified reference materials, and they are in fine agreement within the 2σ limits when comparing the two AMS systems used in this work as well as compared to other published results. Abstract

Humans settled the Caribbean about 6,000 years ago, and ceramic use and intensified agriculture mark a shift from the Archaic to the Ceramic Age at around 2,500 years ago1,2,3. Here we report genome-wide data from 174 ancient individuals from The Bahamas, Haiti and the Dominican Republic (collectively, Hispaniola), Puerto Rico, Curaçao and Venezuela, which we co-analysed with 89 previously published ancient individuals. Stone-tool-using Caribbean people, who first entered the Caribbean during the Archaic Age, derive from a deeply divergent population that is closest to Central and northern South American individuals; contrary to previous work4, we find no support for ancestry contributed by a population related to North American individuals. Archaic-related lineages were >98% replaced by a genetically homogeneous ceramic-using population related to speakers of languages in the Arawak family from northeast South America; these people moved through the Lesser Antilles and into the Greater Antilles at least 1,700 years ago, introducing ancestry that is still present. Ancient Caribbean people avoided close kin unions despite limited mate pools that reflect small effective population sizes, which we estimate to be a minimum of 500–1,500 and a maximum of 1,530–8,150 individuals on the combined islands of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola in the dozens of generations before the individuals who we analysed lived. Census sizes are unlikely to be more than tenfold larger than effective population sizes, so previous pan-Caribbean estimates of hundreds of thousands of people are too large5,6. Confirming a small and interconnected Ceramic Age population7, we detect 19 pairs of cross-island cousins, close relatives buried around 75 km apart in Hispaniola and low genetic differentiation across islands. Abstract

A new multi-isotope plutonium standard for isotopic ratio measurements with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) was created by gravimetric mixing of different single-isotope standards provided by IRMM (Pu-239, Pu-240, Pu-242, Pu-244). This standard material has been measured at the AMS facilities at Canberra (Australia), Cologne (Germany), Caserta (Italy), Sevilla (Spain) and Zurich (Switzerland). Additionally, the material was characterized using a Neptune MC-ICPMS (multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) at the joint Cologne-Bonn isotope facility. The results of this laboratory intercomparison are presented and consensus values for the isotope compositions of the standard material are proposed.
