This work considered the experimental investigation of self-damping characteristics of ACSR Beresford and TERN transmission line conductors using the free and forced vibration techniques. When subjected to a load, self-damping is the power dissipated per unit length of the conductor as it vibrates. ACSR Beresford and TERN conductors are the two most commonly used conductors in the South African transmission network. The paper has revealed that for all the tests, the damping factors for the forced vibration on the TERN conductor was ζ ≤ 0.0307, and for the free vibration was, ζ ≤ 0.057, whereas the damping factors for the ACSR Beresford (forced vibration) were found to be ζ ≤ 0.0103, and for the ACSR Beresford (free vibration) were found to be ζ ≤ 0.056. The damping factors obtained in both conductor-tests were not sufficient to suppress Aeolian vibrations. Results obtained by Mokeretla (2011), that the internal self-damping of TERN transmission lines could not suppress Aeolian vibrations, have been confirmed, due to the damping values being much less than critical damping (ζ ≪ 1). An additional conductor was tested, the ACSR Beresford conductor, whose self-damping factor was also not sufficient to suppress Aeolian vibration.

We conducted a one-year-long study of solute load measured three times per month in three neighboring subwatersheds (Alashtar, Khorram Abad, and Biranshahr) located in the Karkheh River basin in the Zagros region of southwestern Iran. Research was focused on the chemical composition of water (solute load), karst denudation rate, spatial and temporal variability, as well as comparison of solute load with suspended load. Results show that Ca-Mg-HCO3 is the dominant water type that reflects the lithological characteristics of the catchment areas. Lack of seasonal fluctuation of solute load and absence of dilution during high water levels but evident seasonal course of discharge defines the highest solute flux during the annual maximum of discharge in spring months. The highest solute flux is related to flood events. High annual variation of Na1 concentration compared to conservative Cl2 as well as Chloro-Alkali indexes (CAI and CAI2) suggests that Na1 adsorption and desorption during ion-exchange reactions occur in the regolith. This Na+ variability, to some extent, explains weak Ca21 and Mg21 dilution effect during high water levels. During the measurement period (2014-2015), solute flux calculated per catchment area amounted to 49-69 t km-2 a-1 (tons per km per year). The chemical composition of water and discharge shows by far the highest chemical denudation of limestones and dolomites (87−89 %), while dissolution of gypsum is of minor importance (11−13 %). As a result, the carbonate karst solutional denudation rate is between 0.010 and 0.040 mm a21 , where the higher values are more probable for longer periods due to the relatively low discharge during the spring of 2015. Comparison of dissolved and suspended loads indicates that the transport of suspended load is an order of magnitude less than transport of the dissolved load; the only exception is one flash flood event when suspended load exceeded the dissolved load. Besides a small decrease in solute flux as well as carbonate karst dissolution rates from NW to SE, no large hydrochemical differences between the three subwatersheds were detected.

The growth of a nestling during the first few weeks after hatching is crucial for its further life and is sensitive to the conditions experienced during this period. Among species exhibiting Sexual Size Dimorphism (SSD), one of the most important factors influencing growth parameters is the sex of the hatchlings. In this study, we tested whether sex and other factors (hatching date, egg volume, brood size and sex ratio in the brood) were related to sex on growth parameters in Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) chicks. In this species, males are 3%–10% larger than females when adult. At hatching, only the total head length was greater in males than females, but values close to fledging were greater for most of the measured parameters (3%—tarsus, 4%—total head length, 13%—body mass). Moreover, the maximum body mass growth rate was higher in males but females entered the rapid growth phase somewhat earlier and achieved the final total head length sooner. Nestling growth was also significantly correlated with brood size and hatching date, though mostly negatively (e.g. lower tarsus and total head length asymptote, lower maximum growth rate and growth rate constant of total head length in bigger and later clutches). The occurrence of SSD during the nestling period and higher maximum growth rate of body mass in males indicates that the costs of raising sons may be higher than of raising daughters. However, we did not find evidence of either sex-biased nestling mortality or skewed sex ratio.

Despite the declining global population trend of several riverine birds, inadequate attention has been given for their conservation. We monitored the nesting activities of Endangered Black-bellied Tern, Indian skimmer, Vulnerable River Tern, Near Threatened River Lapwing and Great Thick-knee for three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019 along the Mahanadi River in Odisha, eastern India. We calculated the nesting success rate as the proportion of success nests to the total number of monitored nests and identified the causes of nest failure examining the nest and its surroundings. Factors responsible for nest failure were flooding (46%), predation (28.6%), desertion (12.2%), trampling (7.1%) and egg collection (6.1%). Formulation of an evidence-based multi species conservation action plan to protect these threatened riverine birds is urgently required and its successful implementation needs support from the Irrigation and Revenue Department. Human induced disturbances can be minimized through community awareness.

Inference studies from body mass during the non-breeding season are rare in seabirds due to methodological difficulties to sample individuals. Here, we used 12 years of data collected from 2000 to 2019 on about 6800 birds mist-netted at La Somone, Senegal along the East Atlantic Flyway to examine the role of intrinsic and environmental factors in explaining body mass variation in both Common Sterna hirundo and Roseate S. dougallii Terns. Most captured terns were subadults and adults aged three years and older, although ca. 22% of trapped Common Terns were immatures aged one–two years. Mean body mass values of Common and Roseate Terns were substantially lower than published values reported from European breeding sites. In both species, females were, on average, lighter than males, and in the Common Tern, immatures were also lighter than older individuals. Based on the subset of recoveries of birds initially marked at birth in Europe, we found significant differences in body mass according to natal origin in Common Terns but not in Roseate Terns. The variations reported for the former species were mainly attributed to size, with lighter and smaller individuals originating from the British Isles, intermediate individuals from western/central Europe, and heavier and larger birds from Fennoscandian countries. Capture date, used as a proxy measure of timing of migration, showed a strong covariation with body mass in both species. In fact, as the spring season progressed, mist-netted birds became progressively heavier, irrespective of age and natal origin. This suggests that earlier and lighter migrants may have opted for a more protracted migration duration involving more frequent and/or longer refueling periods. Conversely, late migrants needed greater body reserves to achieve the return journey to the colonies within a shorter period to arrive on time for the breeding season. Global climate phenomena such as the North Atlantic and Southern Oscillation indices did not explain inter-annual variations in body mass during the course of this study. Overall, our results suggest that, during the non-breeding season, body mass in these two long-distance migratory species is mainly shaped by intrinsic factors and inter-individual variation in migration strategy.

Summary Widely distributed aquatic species such as terns are highly dependent on, and can serve as indicators of, the global health of marine and other aquatic environments. Documented mass mortality events in terns have been associated with anthropogenic, weather-related and, less commonly, infectious causes. This study describes a multispecies mortality event associated with brevetoxicosis and Bisgaard taxon 40-induced sepsis involving common (Sterna hirundo) and sandwich (Thalasseus sandvicensis) terns off the southwest coast of Florida, USA, in November and December 2018. During an approximately 6–8-week period, a large number of birds were found dead or displayed weakness, ataxia or other neurological signs. Many were admitted to a wildlife hospital for evaluation, but most died or were euthanized due to poor prognosis. Necropsy of 12 birds revealed minimal or non-specific gross lesions. Initial toxicology screening of tissues for brevetoxins revealed levels that could be consistent with brevetoxicosis. However, histology revealed multiorgan inflammation and necrosis associated with a gram-negative bacillus. A bacterium isolated on aerobic culture of liver and heart tissues was unidentifiable in the MALDI-TOF database. Subsequently, 16 S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that the isolate shared 99.33% homology with Bisgaard taxon 40 from the Pasteurellaceae family. While the source of the bacterium and potential association with brevetoxin exposure are unclear, histopathology suggests that the bacterium was the proximate cause of clinical signs and mortality in all birds examined as well as the scale of the mortality event. This report highlights the need to conduct detailed investigations into wildlife mortality events and expands on the current, limited knowledge of the effects of novel Pasteurellaceae bacteria on avian health.

We present the first detailed study of population dynamics, breeding biology and egg measurement of Common Terns. During six years (from 2004 to 2009) of monitoring, from mid-May to mid-August, 74 Common Terns individual were recorded at Laouinet small island, El Tarf, northeast of Algeria, witha finite population growth rate that indicated an alarming population decline(λ = -0.62: Lambda). Sterna hirundo build its nests (n = 37) in the northeast at a mean distance of 7.58 m from the closest edge of rocks. The nests were closed and ovoid, constituted mainly of mussel shells Sandpit, stems and leaves. Incubation was performed by pairs of common tern and lasted 25.5 ±3.4 days. We recorded a clutch size of 1 to 3 eggs with mean clutch size of 2.45±0.65 (41.24±0.83 × 30.46±0.62 mm). The egg parameters (volume, mass, shape index) varied between the six years of the study. The egg volume (19.24±0.87) depended more on egg width (30.46±0.62), however the egg shape (0.73±0.20) depended negatively on the egg length (41.24±0.83) but not on the egg width. Our results also showed a stabilized hatching success and a best estimation of breeding success. The hatching success did not vary between years: 70.5% in 2004, 68.75% in 2005, 71.42% in 2006, 71.42% in 2007, 69.23% in 2008 and 69.23% in 2009.

Saunders’s terns (Sternula saundersi) are a small, ground-nesting marine bird species that have a massive rearing range, including the shores and islands of Asia and Africa adjacent to the north Indian Ocean. Despite occupying a large breeding range, little is known about the breeding ecology of this species. This research explored aspects of Saunders’s terns’ breeding ecology and predation rate in 2013 on the Farasan Islands of Saudi Arabia. The outcomes confirm that the mean clutch size of a Saunders’s tern was 1.77 ± 0.08 (n = 31) eggs per clutch and the mean egg size was 31.05 × 23.15 mm. The results of this study show a remarkable relationship between clutch size and egg volume and length (p = .002, p = .004, respectively). Predation was the major reason for nest damage (62.5%). Evidence from cameras at nests showed that the predators of Saunders’s tern nests on the Farasan Islands were white-tailed mongoose (Ichneumia albicauda) and Egyptian vultures (Neophron percnopterus). This is the first study on the breeding ecology of Saunders’s terns, and it shows that predator control is essential to the existence of the species. The results of this study suggest that fencing some breeding sites may help to minimize human disturbance and decrease the risk of nest predation from mammalian predators. Further research is needed to compare the predation rates on the mainland and islands and to develop efficient strategies to conserve this ground-nesting species.

The fauna of parasites of Common (Sterna hirundo) and Arctic (Sterna paradisaea) terns obtained during the spring hunting period of 2013–2015 on the coast of Lake Ladoga has been studied. We found 15 species of parasites of various systematic groups: Cestoda (six species), Trematoda (four species), Nematoda (two species), Acanthocephala (two species), and Crustacea (one species). In the Common tern, 11 species of parasites have been registered, and in the Arctic tern, seven species. All parasites identified are typical and widespread helminths of fish-eating birds that are ubiquitous in the Palearctic. For the first time in the territory of Karelia, the species Reighardia sternae Diesing 1864 has been recorded.

This study was carried out to record the avifaunal diversity of the riverine habitats along the Godavari River in Papikonda National Park, during a short survey conducted from 2017 to 2018. A total of 63 bird species belonging to 25 families were recorded during the survey. The study resulted in the recording of eight globally threatened avian species including the Endangered Black-bellied Tern Sterna acuticauda, and seven Near Threatened species, viz.: Painted Stork Mycteria leucocephala, Black-headed Ibis Threskiornis melanocephalus, Great Thick Knee Esacus recurvirostris, River Lapwing Vanellus duvaucelli, Malabar Pied Hornbill Anthracoceros coronatus, Grey-headed Fish Eagle Haliaeetus ichthyaetus, and Oriental Darter Anhinga melanogaster. Species including Black-bellied Tern Sterna acuticauda, Grey-headed Fish Eagle Haliaeetus ichthyaetus, Indian Eagle-owl Bubo bengalensis, and Black Eagle Ictinaetus malaiensis were recorded for the first time along the riverine habitats of Papikonda National Park. Sand mining of the riverbed and discharge of effluents into the Godavari River has already negatively impacted the associated habitats and avifaunal diversity.

Black-bellied Tern, Sterna acuticauda J.E. Gray, 1831, is an Endangered species currently restricted to a few patches along the major rivers and lakes in the Indian subcontinent. I report it from Tungabhadra River at Siruguppa for the first time. Five individuals in breeding plumage were observed at a 6 km stretch of river, sampled using line transect method. Previous records, with this new locality, suggest that the population of Black-bellied Tern could be fragmented. This new site could be a promising breeding ground for the species; nevertheless, it is under threat owing to uncontrolled sand mining.

Knowing about a threatened species’ effective population size (Ne) is vital to assess population trends and guide conservation efforts. Highly mobile and migratory species are some of the most threatened yet hardest to monitor groups. Recently, a conversion has been proposed to convert estimates of the effective number of breeders (Nb) to Ne using two life history traits. We evaluated current methods to estimate Nb and Ne to inform conservation management using the black-fronted tern/tarapirohe (Chlidonias albostriatus) as a case study. Black-fronted terns are endangered, highly mobile and traditional monitoring methods have proven difficult. Based on 17 microsatellites and extensive sampling throughout the breeding range, we estimated mean Nb ca. 700 based on sibship assignment and linkage disequilibrium (LD) methods. Mean estimates of LD Ne based on the conversion of Nb and two life history traits was 668, while LD Ne based on samples of chicks and adults was 3216. The low ratio of Nb/Ne when using the Ne estimate based on mixed-age samples is probably driven by a combination of Nb being more sensitive to the large recruitment failure of individuals, large variation compared to mean reproductive success between same-age and same-sex individuals, and the ongoing overall population decline. We highlight that in relatively long-lived and threatened species, a combination of Nband Ne estimates are more appropriate to assess the population status rather than solely relying on Neof mixed-age samples. For black-fronted terns, we recommend increased conservation management and genetic monitoring based on Nb and Ne.

The arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) is a ubiquitous migratory seabird of the High Arctic, currently thought to be in decline in most of the circumpolar world, but surprisingly little is known of its biology at high latitudes. We studied organ size and nutrient reserves of arctic terns breeding beside a High Arctic polynya in Nunavut, Canada, from their arrival at the colony into the chick-rearing period. Both males and females had a decrease in gizzard size through breeding, with gizzard mass during chick-rearing 39 percent lower than on arrival at the breeding grounds. Through the duration of the breeding season, heart, liver, and small intestine showed little change, but females had higher fat and protein stores than males. Terns from this colony likely have increasing fat levels and high body condition due to proximity to a highly productive polynya, where terns appear to gain more energy than they expend during foraging trips. This suggests that though terns at this colony may be near the northern limit of their range, local conditions have a strong impact on organ and nutrient reserve dynamics of these arctic seabirds.

The consequences of bird mortality caused by collisions with wind turbines are increasingly receiving attention. So‐called acceptable mortality limits of populations, that is, those that assume that 1%–5% of additional mortality and the potential biological removal (PBR), provide seemingly clear‐cut methods for establishing the reduction in population viability.We examine how the application of these commonly used mortality limits could affect populations of the Common Starling, Black‐tailed Godwit, Marsh Harrier, Eurasian Spoonbill, White Stork, Common Tern, and White‐tailed Eagle using stochastic density‐independent and density‐dependent Leslie matrix models.Results show that population viability can be very sensitive to proportionally small increases in mortality. Rather than having a negligible effect, we found that a 1% additional mortality in postfledging cohorts of our studied populations resulted in a 2%–24% decrease in the population level after 10 years. Allowing a 5% mortality increase to existing mortality resulted in a 9%–77% reduction in the populations after 10 years.When the PBR method is used in the density‐dependent simulations, the proportional change in the resulting growth rate and carrying capacity was species‐independent and largely determined by the recovery factor (F r). When F r = 1, a value typically used for robust populations, additional mortality resulted in a 50%–55% reduction in the equilibrium density and the resulting growth rate. When F r = 0.1, used for threatened populations, the reduction in the equilibrium density and growth rate was about 5%. Synthesis and applications. Our results show that by allowing a mortality increase from wind farm collisions according to both criteria, the population impacts of these collisions can still be severe. We propose a simple new method as an alternative that was able to estimate mortality impacts of age‐structured stochastic density‐dependent matrix models., In this paper, we evaluate two commonly used acceptable mortality limits that should safeguard bird population from wind turbine collision. We use age‐structured matrix models of birds (11 cases) with contrasting age of first reproduction to evaluate these mortality limits. Results show that populations can still suffer severe losses by using these approaches. Alternatively, we developed a robust and a simple model that summarizes the expected population reduction in the matrix models.

Determining the migratory status of seabird populations is crucial for addressing conservation concerns. The Roseate Tern Sterna dougallii is considered endangered in South Africa in view of its small breeding population and the threats to eggs and chicks. Earlier works based on capture-recapture data suggest that this population adopts a partial migratory strategy. Updated capture-recapture data were combined with new data on moult and stable isotopes of scapular feathers to determine whether subpopulations could be identified in the South African breeding population. Moult data on 404 individuals failed to identify subpopulations, but two groups were identifiable with the stable isotopes: one group of four individuals exhibiting low carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios and a second group (comprising the remaining 152 individuals) with significantly higher ratios. The isotope data suggest that birds from the two groups moulted in different areas. Comparisons with published studies showed that the 152 individuals had likely moulted their scapulars in South African waters, but the moulting area for the remaining four individuals could not be ascertained due to the absence of detailed isoscapes in the southern part of the Mozambique Channel. Further work investigating the genetic differentiation between South African and Madagascan Roseate Terns may bring new insight into the migratory behaviour of the South African population. La Sterne de Dougall Sterna dougallii figure sur la liste des espèces en voie de disparition en Afrique du Sud, compte tenu de sa petite population reproductrice et des menaces pesant sur ses pontes et ses poussins. Des travaux antérieurs basés sur des données de capture-recapture suggèrent que cette population adopte une stratégie de migration partielle. Des données de capture-recapture actualisées ont été combinées avec des données d’isotopes stables et de mue pour déterminer si des sous-populations pouvaient être identifiées dans la population reproductrice sud-africaine. Les données de mue recueillies sur 404 individus n’ont pas permis d’identifier de sous-populations, mais deux groupes étaient identifiables avec les isotopes stables: un groupe de quatre individus présentant des ratios d’isotopes stables à faible teneur en carbone et en azote et un second groupe comprenant les 152 individus présentant des ratios beaucoup plus élevés. Les données isotopiques suggèrent que les oiseaux des deux groupes ont mué dans des zones différentes. Une comparaison avec de précédentes études publiées a montré que les 152 individus avaient probablement mué leurs scapulaires dans les eaux sud-africaines. La zone de mue des quatre individus restants n’a pas pu être déterminée en raison de l’absence d’empreintes isotopiques «isoscapes» détaillées dans le sud du chenal du Mozambique. Des travaux ultérieurs, notamment la différenciation génétique entre les sternes de Dougall sud-africaines et malgaches, pourraient apporter de nouvelles informations sur le comportement migratoire de la population sud-africaine. Between 2002 and 2019, monitoring of Common Tern Sterna hirundo and Little Tern Sternula albifrons along the Sava River near Zagreb, Croatia was conducted. Natura 2000 site “Sava kod Hrušćice” was designated to protect colony at river islands, with estimated population sizes of 100–150 pairs of Common and 20 pairs of the Little Tern. Flooding of the colony caused breeding failure in several years. Common Terns moved to breed on islands in gravel pits with a total population around 150 pairs, while Little Tern did not breed after 2010. In the last few years, terns have not bred at Hrušćica and the only colony inside the Natura 2000 site is situated on a breeding platform at Siromaja gravel pit. Channelling of rivers and hydropower plants are the main threats, changing natural dynamics of water level and causing reduction of gravel sediment in rivers.

Years ago, the Common Tern Sterna hirundo was known to nest in Slovenia along larger watercourses. Today it only breeds locally in artificially built nesting areas. On the seashore, its nesting was confirmed for the first time in 1983, when 9 pairs bred in the Sečovlje Saltpans. In the same year, we started mapping the breeders in the Sečovlje Saltpans, which has continued till this very day. Since 2010, we have been systematically collecting data on the number of fledged birds. In 1991, the number of breeding pairs increased, which coincides with the increase in other parts of the Mediterranean. Since 1991, the size of the breeding population has been quite stable, ranging from 30 to 70 pairs. The Common Tern’s breeding success in the Sečovlje Saltpans is poor, mainly due to precipitation (40% of all unsuccessful nests) and predation (35%). Long, dry periods without rainfall have a positive effect on the hatching and fledging success. Appropriate water management, artificial islands and access to nesting sites control can prevent the disturbance caused by visitors and, in part, predators such as foxes and martens. At the Sečovlje Saltpans, the Common Tern’s survival depends entirely on the active management. The expected climate change, with increasing sea level rise and consequently more frequent flooding of low-lying areas, further aggravates its existence and survival in the Sečovlje Saltpans.

Distribution of medical facilities in Indonesia is uneven, so residents in remote islands have difficulties to reach it. We need to build health boat, a floating facility that provide standard services like in the hospital, especially in Derawan and Tarakan Islands in East Kalimantan. This Health boat has a homebase in Balikpapan. Therefore, the condition of the sea between Balikpapan, Derawan, and Tarakan need to be reviewed. One method to determine the condition of the sea is analysis of meteorological and oceanographic, which enable us to get the maximum wave height estimation. Long tern wave forecast can be obtained by using statistical methods of measurement to provide data of high wave in 1, 10, 25, 50 and 100 years.

An overview of the long-term (1980–2019) population development of colonial Laridae species in continental part of Slovenia, their nest sites at anthropogenic water bodies, and various conservation measures with special focus on Common Tern Sterna hirundo along the Slovenian/border part of the Drava River is given. Breeding of these species occurs only on the westernmost fringes of the Pannonian plain, on lowland floodplains of the main rivers of the Danube Basin. Altogether, breeding of Common Tern and Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus was recorded at 11 and 10 sites, respectively. Lake Ptuj is the single site with mixed-species colony residing there in all years of the study period, while at Ormož (two sites) it was established during the early 1990s in the Slovenian territory but moved completely to the Croatian side by the second half of the 2010s. At all other sites, a suitable breeding habitat became available or was provided by management in just a few years, or created only recently. The percentage of Common Tern national population breeding in continental Slovenia was usually well above 50% throughout the 1980s and 1990s (52–136 pairs), while in the last 16 years (77–258 pairs) it ranged between 40.8% and 69.0%. Breeding of Black-headed Gull remains largely limited to continental Slovenia. Overall, continental populations of both species in the last few years have been substantially higher compared to the most of the study period. Long-term trends were estimated as a moderate increase for Common Tern and a strong increase for Black-headed Gull. Since 2006, the Mediterranean Gull L. melanocephalus has been a regular breeder at Lake Ptuj (up to 28 pairs), the only such site in Slovenia. Three general types of conservation measures implemented at different nesting locations are described in detail: (1) measures to create/increase the total surface of breeding habitat – the construction of new breeding structures, such as artificial islands and nesting rafts, (2) measures to maintain and enhance breeding habitat through recurring management activities, and (3) measures aimed to increase chick/nest survival and improve breeding success.

The catalogue presents the data on all specimens of terns (Sterninae) that have been inventoried into the ornithological collection of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History (PMS). The catalogue includes data on preserved as well as lost specimens. The data have been collected from all inventory books at hand in the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. By the end of 2019, 66 different specimens of eight tern species have been recorded in the ornithological collection, of which 56 specimens are still preserved. Most specimens were collected in the 1940–1970 period. The largest number of specimens concerns the Black Tern Chlidonias niger and Common Tern Sterna hirundo. Among the collected terns, the specimens found in Slovenia predominate. Five specimens originate from other countries, specifically Eritrea, Oman, Serbia and Croatia.

Background Complex Trauma (CT) is a term used to refer to multiple or prolonged traumatic experiences. Such experiences are often first encountered during childhood and may impact key developmental periods. CT is a risk for a broad range of deleterious physical, psychological, social, and occupational outcomes. The diagnosis of Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) has been proposed to capture the symptomatology resulting from CT exposure. In Australia, there are few publicly funded services that target, and are purposely designed to support, the mental health needs of young people with symptoms of complex post-traumatic stress (C-PTSD). The Tern Programme has been designed as a purpose-built model of care for providing mental health support to young people with C-PTSD. Methods This implementation trial will involve a longitudinal examination of Tern participants for a fixed 24-month period. Participants will be recruited from the young people referred to Tern at headspace centres in regional Australia where Tern operates. Eligible participants will have reported a history of complex trauma, and present with symptoms of C-PTSD. All participants will be invited to complete a series of surveys during their participation in the programme. Survey items will assess C-PTSD symptom change, quality of life and occupational functioning. The Tern model of care is delivered in a semi-structured format to accommodate a person-centred flexible approach. Fidelity will be monitored through the completion of a clinician post-session checklist and through group supervision. Discussion This study will provide the first quantitative data on the new Tern model of care and evaluate mental health and functional outcomes of its participants. If effective, Tern may be suitable for replication in other Australian or international youth mental health services where complex post-traumatic stress is prevalent. International audience; The eradication of invasive mammals on islands is important for protecting seabird populations and insular ecosystems. However, the impacts of such eradications are insufficiently known because monitoring of potentially beneficiary species is often sporadic and limited. We performed a survey of all seabird species on Saint-Paul Island, southern Indian Ocean, 20 years after successful eradication of invasive black rat (Rattus rattus) and European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). Using complementary sampling designs including adaptive cluster sampling, stratified random sampling and entire sampling, we estimated population changes and colonization by new seabird species. A total of 13 seabird species were found breeding on Saint-Paul post-eradication compared to six before the eradication. Among the seven species that colonized the island, five (MacGillivray’s prion Pachyptila macgillivrayi, fairy prion P. turtur, white-bellied storm petrel Fregetta grallaria, Antarctic tern Sterna vittata, sooty tern Onychoprion fuscatus) had relictual populations breeding on a nearby islet, and one (brown skua Catharacta antarctica) was a new breeding species. We also found breeding subantarctic little shearwaters Puffinus elegans. For species that were breeding on the Saint Paul pre-eradication, the mean annual population growth rate was 1.030 ± 0.093 (SE). Species known to be vulnerable to rat predation (prions, great-winged petrel Pterodroma macroptera, flesh-footed shearwater Puffinus carneipes, subantarctic little shearwater, white-bellied storm petrel, Antarctic tern) had the highest population growth rates. Two decades after the eradication of invasive mammals on a remote oceanic island, seabird populations were high beneficiaries. These findings further highlight the importance of invasive mammal eradication on islands as a conservation tool. Results are encouraging for the planned eradication of invasive mammals from nearby Amsterdam Island, and suggest this will mainly benefit terns and small burrowing petrels.

In 2006, the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project began the process of converting 50% to 90% of these managed pond habitats into tidal marsh. We compared American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana) and Black-necked Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) abundance in south San Francisco Bay before (2001) and after approximately 1,300 ha of managed ponds were breached to tidal action to begin tidal marsh restoration (2019). Over the 18-year period, American Avocet abundance declined 13.5% (2,765 in 2001 vs. 2,391 in 2019), and Black-necked Stilt abundance declined 30.0% (1,184 in 2001 vs. 828 in 2019). Forster’s Tern (Sterna forsteri) abundance was 2,675 birds in 2019. In 2019, managed ponds accounted for only 25.8% of suitable habitats, yet contained 53.9%, 38.6%, and 65.6% American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, and Forster’s Tern observations, respectively. Conversely, tidal marsh and tidal mudflats accounted for 42.9% of suitable habitats, yet contained only 18.4%, 10.3%, and 19.8% of American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, and Forster’s Tern observations, respectively. Using a separate nest-monitoring data set, we found that nest abundance in south San Francisco Bay declined for all three species from 2005–2019. Average annual nest abundance during 2017–2019 declined 53%, 71%, and 36%, for American Avocets, Back-necked Stilts, and Forster’s Terns, respectively, compared to 2005–2007. Loss of island nesting habitat as a result of tidal marsh conversion and an increasing population of predatory California Gulls (Larus californicus) are two potential causes of these declines. All three species established nesting colonies on newly constructed islands within remaining managed ponds; however, these new colonies did not make up for the steep declines observed at other historical nesting sites. For future wetland restoration, retaining more managed ponds that contain islands suitable for nesting may help to limit further declines in breeding waterbird populations.n

Despite intensive management since the 1970s, recovery of the endangered northwestern Atlantic population of the Roseate Tern (Sterna dougallii dougallii) has not offset low productivity from a female-biased sex ratio, low adult survival, and habitat constriction. Now, >90% of individuals breed at three sites within 200 km from Long Island, NY, to Buzzards Bay, MA (warm-water subregion). To characterize the impact of historical bottlenecks, metapopulation structure, and demographic fluctuations on genetic variation, Roseate Terns from the warm-water (1870s, 1970s, 1997, 2016) and cold-water (Nova Scotia, Canada; 2018) subregions were genotyped at 8–16 microsatellites and 2–3 mitochondrial regions. Diversity declined in the warm-water subregion from the 1870s (expected heterozygosity [HE] = 0.44, allelic richness [AR] = 2.86) and 1970s (HE = 0.53, AR = 3.25) to 1997 (HE = 0.38, AR = 2.58). Summary Tortoises (land turtles) are familiar animals and are generally assumed to be strict herbivores. Their ecological roles are most obvious in giant tortoise species which, due to their size and local abundance, play major roles as keystone species and ecosystem engineers 1 , 2 , 3 . In the Galapagos and Seychelles islands these species are known to play major roles as the islands’ largest herbivores, with exceptionally high biomass and consuming up to 11% of primary production 1 . In addition they act as ecosystem engineers, dispersing seeds, breaking vegetation and eroding rocks 2 . However, as slow-moving poikilotherms most people assume their behaviour to be simple. Here we present video evidence of a Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) attacking a tern chick and pursuing it along a log. Finally the tortoise killed the chick and was observed to eat it. Other tortoises in the same area have been seen making similar attacks, although those were not fully documented. We believe that the exceptional combination of a tree-nesting tern colony with a resident giant tortoise population has created conditions leading to systematic hunting of birds by several individual tortoises; an entirely novel behavioural strategy for any tortoise species. El Gaviotín Sudamericano (Sterna hirundinacea) es una especie costero-marina, migratoria y exclusiva de Sudamérica. Si bien se ha registrado en varios cuerpos de agua interiores en territorio argentino, hasta el momento todos los eventos de nidificación se dieron sobre la costa marina, donde la abundancia de alimento (basada en Anchoita Argentina Engraulis anchoita) puede sostener colonias, a excepción de una pequeña colonia en el Río Negro. En febrero de 2020 se registraron adultos de Gaviotín Sudamericano alimentando con langostas a volantones, en el entorno del Lago Epecuén, en la Provincia de Buenos Aires. En octubre de 2020 se encontra ron 126 nidos en una colonia sobre un islote con uno o dos huevos (promedio 1,7), pichones pequeños y huevos depredados. En época de cría, alimenta a sus pichones con una dieta compuesta en más del 90% de peces. Se observaron adultos cazando insectos y alimentando volantones en el aire. El Lago Epecuén es hipersalino, y no cuenta con peces, por lo que probablemente los insectos sean su reemplazo. ElGaviotín Sudamericano se reproduce siguiendo dos fenologías: el invierno austral (para Brasil y Uruguay) y el verano austral en la Patagonia Argentina. De acuerdo a su ubicación y al periodo de actividad, esta nueva colonia podría corresponderse con la fenología patagónica.

Ruddy Turnstones Arenaria interpres have been identified as egg-predators at seabird and shorebird colonies, including gull and tern colonies in the tropics and Northern Hemisphere. The Australian Fairy Tern Sternula nereis nereis is a threatened (Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999: Vulnerable) coastal seabird, whose breeding behaviour and ecology expose it to a wide range of threats. This study describes inferred predation on Fairy Tern eggs at a small breeding colony on Rottnest Island, Western Australia, by Ruddy Turnstones, a previously unsuspected predator for thisspecies. Unlike the behavioural response shown towards Silver Gulls Larus novaehollandiae and Australian Ravens Corvus coronoides, which includes collective group defence and dive-bombing, Fairy Terns showed a lack of aggression towards Turnstones within the colony. The lack of a behavioural response suggests that the Terns did not recognise the Turnstones as predators, which may increase the risk of egg-predation. This study suggests that we should be alert to threats from unsuspected predators, which have the potential to reduce the breeding success of this Vulnerable tern.
