OPERA is part of the CNGS project and it is an experiment dedicated to the observation of long-baseline [v.sub.[mu]], into [v.sub.[tau]] oscillations through [tau] appearance. Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) with bakelite electrodes are used to instrument the 2 cm gaps between the magnetized iron slabs of the two spectrometers. The RPC installation ended in may 2004 on the first spectrometer and in march 2005 on the second one. Before the installation, every RPC is subjected to a complete test chain in order to reject the poorer quality detectors. The tests are performed in dedicated facilities to ensure the proper RPC gluing, to measure its electrical properties and to verify the response to cosmic rays and the intrinsic noise levels. We have also tested the long term stability of real size OPERA RPC prototypes operated at cosmic ray fluxes for more than one year. On small size prototypes we are performing studies on the gas mixtures in order to reduce the total charge released in the gas for each detector count. The validation of the installed RPCs has been performed with pure nitrogen. A small part of them has been also tested with the gas mixture Ar/[C.sub.2][H.sub.2][F.sub.4]/i - [C.sub.4][H.sub.10]/S[F.sub.6] = 75.4/20/4/0.6. The OPERA experiment [M. Guler et al., CERN/SPSC 2000-028, SPSC/P318, LNGS P25/2000, July 10, 2000; M. Guler et al., CERN/SPSC 2001-025, SPSC/M668, LNGS-EXP 30/2001 Add. 1/01, August 21, 2001] will study Î1⁄2Î1⁄4â Î1⁄2Ïoscillations through Ï appearance on the 732 Km long CERN to Gran Sasso baseline. The magnet yokes of the two muon spectrometers are instrumented with 44 layers of high resistivity bakelite Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) operated in streamer mode. Each layer covers about 70 m2. Four RPC planes were instrumented and the first tests were performed confirming a good behaviour of the installed RPCs in terms of intrinsic noise and operating currents. The measured noise maps agree with those obtained in the extensive quality tests performed at surface. Counting rates are below 20 Hz/m2. Single an multiple cosmic muon tracks were also reconstructed. The estimated efficiency is close to the geometrical limit and the very first measurements of the absolute and differential muon flux are in agreement with expectations. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Before the installation in the OPERA experiment, bakelite Resistive Plate Chambers are subjected to a chain of quality tests performed at the Gran Sasso Laboratories. Mechanical properties are first investigated in a fully automatized station, measuring the gas leakage and checking the gluing of the internal spacers. Then electrical properties are tested: current vs. voltage characteristics are measured both with pure argon and with gas mixture filling; moreover the short term behavior of the current is monitored. Finally the response uniformity is tested, measuring the efficiency on the entire detector surface at cosmic rays fluxes. In this paper we present the test chain and the results on a large set of chambers. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. more...

- Abstract
Limited streamer chambers are extensively used for high-energy and nuclear physics experiments in accelerator and underground laboratories. The tracking system of LVD, an underground experiment to study muons and neutrino astronomy, will use roughly 15.000 limited streamer chambers and 100.000 external pickup strips with digital readout electronics, In this article we discuss the different aspects of chamber operation that serve to estabilish a testing procedure and to define acceptance criteria for selecting reliable and long-life devices. The procedures and the results obtained from a long-term test to evaluate streamer chember quality, based upon a sample of 2900 items, are described. The selection tests and the long-term observations have been performed in the Astra laboratory, established at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati to carry out quality control procedures for streamer chambers on a large scale and in a controlled environment. more...

- Abstract
The natural occurrence of Alternariamycotoxins in Argentinean wheat from the zone 5 South during the 2004 to 2005 harvest was investigated in 64 wheat samples. All samples were highly contaminated with a wide range of fungal species. Alternariawas found as the main component of the mycota, with an infection percentage of 100%. Three mycotoxins produced by species of Alternariawere determined in wheat: alternariol, alternariol monomethyl ether, and tenuazonic acid. Alternariol was detected in 4 (6%) of 64 samples, with a range of 645 to 1,388 μg/kg (mean of 1,054 μg/kg); alternariol monomethyl ether, with a range of 566 to 7,451 μg/kg (mean of 2,118 μg/kg) in 15 (23%) of 64 samples; and tenuazonic acid in 12 (19%) of 64 samples, with a range of 1,001 to 8,814 μg/kg (mean, 2,313 μg/kg). Alternariol monomethyl ether was the predominant toxin, but tenuazonic acid was detected in higher concentrations. Alternariol was present in fewer samples and in lower levels than were the other toxins. Tenuazonic acid and alternariol monomethyl ether occurred together in four samples, while tenuazonic acid and alternariol co-occurred in one sample. This the first report of the natural occurrence of Alternariamycotoxins in Argentinean wheat. Toxin levels were high, probably due to the heavy infection with Alternariaspecies found in the samples. more...

- Abstract
Abstract: Mssbauer spectroscopy in zero applied field performed on powder samples of monoclinic FeNaP
2 O7 denote spontaneous magnetic ordering at temperatures below 29.20.2 K. Preliminar results from susceptibility and neutron diffraction measurements, currently in progress, establish the same P21 /c space group as the crystalline structure and an equally sized magnetic cell for the array of spins. The hyperfine fields of the two antiferromagnetic sublattices obtained from Mssbauer spectra display coincident Brillouin-type temperature dependences with an extrapolated OK value of 55.00.3 T. Below the Nel temperature the spin orientation does not change relative to the crystalline axes. Mean field theory self-consistent calculations performed in order to estimate the relative magnitudes of the exchange interactions produced the values:JAB =−0.61 cm−1 , andJAA =−0.37 cm−1 . The antiferromagnetism of the system is likely to originate in the different relative numbers of superexchange pathways between sublattices. more...- Published

OPERA is part of CNGS project and it is an experiment dedicated to the observation of long-baseline vμinto vÏoscillations through Ï appearance. Resistive Plate Chambers, RPCs, with bakelite electrodes are used for instrumenting the 2 cm gaps between the magnetized iron slabs of the two spectrometers. The RPCs installation in the first spectrometer ended in May 2004. Before the installation, every RPC is subject to a complete test chain for rejecting the worst quality detectors. The tests are performed in dedicated facilities for ensuring the proper RPC gluing, for measuring its electrical properties and for verifying the response to cosmic rays and the intrinsic noisiness. We have also tested the long term stability of real size OPERA RPC prototypes operated at cosmic ray fluxes for more than one year, which is equivalent, in terms of detectors countings, to about 20 OPERA years. On small size prototypes we are performing studies on the gas mixtures in order to reduce the total charge released in the gas for each detector count. The validation of the installed RPCs has been performed with pure nitrogen. A small part of them has been also tested with the gas mixture Ar/C2H2F4/i - C4H10/SF6= 75.4/20/4/0.6. © 2004 IEEE. more...

All rights reserved. more...

- Abstract
Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) is an important crop cultivated worldwide, with Argentina being one of the major producers in South America. The fruit is susceptible to several fungal diseases, leading to severe economic losses for producers. In this study, Alternaria was found as the prevalent genus in mouldy peppers (50% fruits infected). Morphological identification revealed that all 64 Alternaria isolates belonged to small-spored species, most of them corresponding to A. tenuissima, A. arborescens and A. alternata species-groups. Their secondary metabolite profile was evaluated in vitro; alternariols were synthesized by most of the isolates (91% for alternariol and 92% for alternariol monomethyl ether). A high number of Alternaria spp. also produced tenuazonic acid (64%), altenuene (84%) and tentoxin (72%). In addition, damaged pepper fruits were analysed for the presence of tenuazonic acid and alternariols. A total 32 out of 48 spoiled pepper fruits were contaminated with at least one of these metabolites. Half of the samples were positive for tenuazonic acid (range 8-11,422μg/kg), while alternariol and its monomethyl ether were less frequently detected (21 and 29%, respectively) and at lower concentrations. This is the first report on the natural occurrence of Alternaria mycotoxins in Argentinean sweet pepper, and highlights a consumer risk when mouldy fruits are used in industrialized products because these compounds are not destroyed by conventional heat treatments., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
The principal agents of Fusarium head blight in the main cropping area of Argentina were investigated in heavily infected samples. The ability of the isolates to produce trichothecenes was determined by GC and HPLC. Fusarium graminearum was the predominant species and of 33 isolates, 10 produced deoxinivalenol (DON) (0.1- 29 mg kg(-1)), 13 produced both deoxinivalenol (1.0- 708 mg kg(-1)) and nivalenol (0.1- 6.2mg kg(-1)), 12 produced 3-acetyldeoxinivalenol (0.1- 14 mg kg(-1)), 13 produced 15-acetyldeoxinivalenol (0.1- 1.9 mg kg(-1)), 10 produced Fusarenone X (0.1- 2.4 mg kg(-1)) and 7 produced zearalenone (0.1- 0.6 mg kg(-1)). These results suggest that F. graminearum strains isolated from the wheat growing regions in Argentina belong to DON chemotype. Although some strains produced both deoxinivalenol and nivalenol, nivalenol was produced in lower levels. The natural occurrence of nivalenol in wheat affected by head-blight collected in the main production area during two years (2001-2002) was also determined. From 19 samples 13 were contaminated with deoxinivalenol in a range of 0.3 to 70 mg kg(-1)and 2 samples with both deoxinivalenol (7.5 and 6.7 mg kg(-1)) and nivalenol (0.05 and 0.1 mg kg(-1)), respectively. This is the first report of natural occurrence of nivalenol in wheat cultivate in Argentina. more...

- Abstract
Human urokinase, an enzyme which activates plasminogen, has been crystallized. Repeated recrystallization yielded preparations of maximum specific activity; such preparations revealed only one component when subjected to polyacrylamide gel disc electrophoresis. Studies with the ultracentrifuge demonstrated that urokinase undergoes a concentration-dependent reversible association at pH 6.8. When the partial specific volume of the enzyme is assumed to be 0.735 milliliters per gram at 10 degrees C, Archibald measurements indicate the molecular weight of urokinase to be 53,000. more...
