The present study examined the protective effects of water chloride (Cl−) towards nitrite toxicity in Atlantic salmon parr during 84‐day long nitrite exposure. Effects on growth, histology, blood indices and gene expression were studied at a fixed nominal Cl− concentration of 200 mg/L and at several water nitrite concentrations (0, 0.5, 2, 5 and 10 mg/L NO2−–N). The specific growth rate was significantly reduced during the first three weeks at a Cl:NO2−–N ratio of 21:1, suggesting the activation of coping mechanisms at the later stages of the experiment. No significant effect of nitrite on gill histology and mortality was found. Nitrite accumulated in plasma; however, a Cl:NO2−–N ratio of 104:1 or higher prevented nitrite entry. The concentration of NO2−–N in plasma was significantly reduced at the end of the study, supporting the hypothesis of coping mechanisms. Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (cftr)‐1 showed a significant up‐regulation at highest nitrite concentration on day 22, and in three of the highest exposure groups at the end of the experiment. Our findings suggest that a Cl:NO2−–N ratio above 104:1 should be maintained through episodes of nitrite accumulation in water during the production of Atlantic salmon parr.

AQUI-S (AQUI-S® New Zealand Ltd., Lower Hutt, New Zealand) is a water dispersible liquid anaesthetic that is currently approved in Norway for sedation and anesthesia of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) prior and during handling events and during live fish transport. Its active ingredient is isoeugenol; 540 mg/ml. It is used both in flow-through and recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). However, the potential effects of AQUI-S on the biological component of the water treatment and the possible accumulation within RAS water have not been closely investigated. This project aims to look into the bioreactor efficiency of nitrogen compound removal and AQUI-S stability and potential accumulation within RAS water. The initial concentration of AQUI-S in the RAS water was 5 ml/m3 total system volume, corresponding to 2,7 mg isoeugenol L-1. This represents the maximum load of Aqui-S that theoretically will be added to a RAS; usually only a few tanks in the circuit will be medicated at once, not the entire system. Six hours after addition of AQUI-S, 86-87% of the isoeugenol was degraded or converted although the total water exchange within RAS was very low (6.6 %). It is therefore anticipated that in commercial RAS where the level of total daily water exchange might be higher, the depletion of AQUI-S from water would occur even faster. The water quality and the removal of the TAN and NO2-N were moderately affected, particularly during first 12h of the experiment. One of the reasons for the disturbance of the bioreactor function could be foam formation that was visible prior and in all three chambers of the MBBR within 30 minutes after addition of the AQUI-S. Consequently the difficulty in the mixing and the drop in the oxygen saturation within MBBR could have affected proper operation of the bioreactor. In addition, the low and decreasing concentration of nitrogenous compounds within the system (lack of feeding and fish) is not favourable for the nitrification process within bioreactor. However, it is important to stress that certain amount of nitrogenous compounds was removed at all times. The increase in concentration of TAN and NO2-N was significant; however concentrations were within recommended values issued by Norwegian Food Safety Authorities at all times during the experiment. This conclusion will, however, depend on the initial load of the system. Hence, it is recommended that before AQUI-S use, the TAN levels should not be above 1 mg/l (at pH 7.4 or less), to allow some reduction in removal efficiency and still be within legislation regarding TAN concentration. The removal efficiency of nitrogenous compounds oscillated during first 12 h of experiment but was not significantly affected by addition of AQUI-S. After 12 h, a steady increase in removal efficiency was recorded for TAN and NO2-N, respectively. This conclusion will, however, depend on the initial load of the system. Hence, it is recommended that before AQUI-S use, the TAN levels should not be above 1 mg/l (at pH 7.4 or less), to allow some reduction in removal efficiency and still be within legislation regarding TAN concentration. The removal efficiency of nitrogenous compounds oscillated during first 12 h of experiment but was not significantly affected by addition of AQUI-S. After 12 h, a steady increase in removal efficiency was recorded for TAN and NO2-N, respectively. • The study indicates that Aqui-S is readily degraded by RAS bioreactors, minimizing the risk of isoeugenol accumulating following sequential medication of fish tanks in the RAS • AQUI-S used at doses recommended for sedation is not likely to have serious effects on bioreactor within 48 hours following its use in RAS • Increased foaming in the moving bed bioreactor during the first hours following Aqui-S administration might cause or contribute to a transient reduction in TAN and NO2 –N removal efficiency.

Hovedspørsmålet i denne rapporten har vært om ny oppdrettsteknologi, som i mindre grad enn dagens notbaserte anlegg er avhengig av Norges naturgitte fortrinn, kan true Norges konkurranseposisjon som verdens fremste produsent av oppdrettslaks. Vår hovedkonklusjon er at det skal mye til for å true hegemoniet til det effektive notbaserte produksjonskonseptet i norsk lakseoppdrett. Store sjokk, som for eksempel økte miljøkostnader, kan forandre dette bildet. På lang sikt kan også et effektivisert landbasert oppdrett nærme seg. Vi ser også at landbasert oppdrett i lavkostland kan være en trussel på noe sikt. Kombinasjonsmodeller, hvor større deler av laksens vekst foregår i lukkede anlegg i sjø eller på land, vil sannsynligvis vokse fram. Dette har fordeler både for fiskens miljø og miljøet rundt anlegget, samtidig som man ved å holde bare fisk under 1 kg i lukkede anlegg begrenser investeringene betydelig i forhold til å ha hele tilvekstfasen i lukkede anlegg på land eller i sjø. Naturgitte fortrinn blir kanskje mindre viktig med nye produksjonskonsepter, men andre fortrinn er også meget viktige for Norges konkurranseposisjon, og vanskelige å kopiere. Norsk oppdrettsnæring nyter godt av nærhet til det viktige europeiske ferskfiskmarkedet, sterke kunnskapsmiljøer og en ledende leverandørindustri, god infrastruktur og god forvaltning. Ikke minst har næringen en vanskelig kopierbar styrke i det samarbeidet som oppstår mellom alle disse aktørene, og de klyngeeffekter som dermed skapes. Norway is the worlds’ leading supplier of farmed atlantic salmon. This is the result of favourable natural conditions, and a relatively simple, low-cost technlology, exploiting the availability of free eco-system services.This report investigates how this position might be affected by the development of new technology for closed containment-farming. Our main finding is that new technology must be developed much further in terms of efficiency to be able to compete with the efficiency of the net-cage system. The main difference in terms of cost stems from the very low investment per unit farming volume of the net-cage system. This conclusion might over time be altered by major changes, like for instance increased cost due to environmental regulations. In discussions about competitive positions, one should also keep in mind that Norway’s positions stems not only from natural conditions, but also closeness to the markets, a strong knowledge basis, good infrastructure and good management practices.

Fra ulike interessehold tas det til orde for innføring av lukkede oppdrettsanlegg. Det gjenstår imidlertid ennå mye før lukkede anlegg kan anses som tilstrekkelig dokumenterte og klare for bruk i kommersiell lakseproduksjon. En må også bli mye tydeligere på å kommunisere hva man skal lukke anleggene mot og det hersker mye forvirring rundt bruken av begrepet lukket oppdrettsanlegg. I denne artikkelen foreslår vi et nytt klassifiseringssystem basert på fire ulike klasser, med økende kompleksitet og grad av lukking mot eksternt miljø. Studien viser at det for lukkede anlegg er behov for økt kunnskap innenfor sentrale felter som teknologi, økonomi, fiskehelse, fiskevelferd og biologisk ytelse. Dette er blant hovedkonklusjonene fra en forskergruppe fra SINTEF Fiskeri og havbruk, Nofima og Veterinærinstituttet som har sett på situasjonen. Artikkelen bygger på en forstudie utført av forskergruppen på vegne av Fiskeri- og havbruksnæringsforskningsfond i 2011 (Rosten et al., 2011).

Norge har et stort sjøareal innenfor territorialgrensen som tilsvarer 45 prosent av Norges landareal. Likevel er det kamp om arealene og da spesielt i de kystnære områdene. Fra enkelte hold har det kommet synpunkter på at oppdrettsnæringen må ta i bruk lukkede systemer for oppdrett av fisk i sjø. Dagens tilgjengelige typer av lukkede anlegg for oppdrett i sjø innehar i stor grad et mye lavere tilgjengelig oppdrettsvolum enn dagens åpne oppdrettssystemer med flytekrage med not. Et tenkt scenario med flytting av hele den norske oppdrettsproduksjonen av laks og ørret til lukkede flytende anlegg, vil derfor kreve en betydelig økning i antall oppdrettsenheter, gitt dagens forvaltningsregime. Areal behovet med lukkede anlegg reduseres dersom høyere fisketetthet og større enheter muliggjøres. Artikkelen bygger på en forstudie utført av en forskergruppe fra SINTEF, Nofima og Veterinærinstituttet på vegne av Fiskeri- og havbruksnæringens forskingsfond i 2011.

Formålet med studien var å undersøke om fôr tilsatt aminosyrene arginin eller glutamat kan forbedre teksturen av oppdrettslaks. I tillegg ønsket vi å undersøke om bløt filet kan knyttes til nedsatt leverfunksjon eller andre avvik, og om økt innhold av aminosyrene ville ha en positiv effekt på fiskens helsetilstand. Forsøket ble gjennomført ved Nofimas sjøanlegg på Averøy. Laksen fikk forsøksfôret fra mai 2009 (100 grams smolt) til den hadde passert 3 kilo året etter. Teksturanalyser i september og desember viste at laksen som fikk forsøksfôret hadde fastere tekstur enn laksen som fikk standardfôr. I mai hadde laksen som fikk glutamatfôr fastest tekstur, men vi fant ikke forskjell i teksturen mellom kontroll- og arginingruppen. Det var ikke forskjell i tilvekst mellom fôrgruppende. Laksen som fikk standardfôr hadde størst lever med høyest fettinnhold, mens laksen som fikk argininfôret hadde den minste og magreste leveren. Fettinnholdet i muskel varierte lite mellom fôrgruppene. I september ble laksens evne til å takle trenging i forbindelse med slakting undersøkt. Resultatene viste at trenging fremskyndet rigorforløpet og pH-reduksjon ved lagring. Laksen som fikk glutamatfôr bevarte det høyeste pH-nivået i muskelen og filetteksturen var fastere for begge forsøksgruppene etter 48 timers lagring. Blodanalyser ved slakt viste at laksen som fikk forsøksfôr hadde mindre nedbryting av muskel, og vi registrerte mindre sammenvoksninger av organer. Laksen som fikk økt nivå av glutamat i fôret hadde minst vevsskader og bedre cellulær balanse (høyest bufferkapasitet, lavest oksidativt stress, friskere lever). Konklusjon • Fôret synes å spille en viktigere rolle for teksturen i laksefilet enn tidligere antatt • Det er mulig å forbedre teksturen i laksefilet ved å justere aminosyreprofilen i fôret • Aminosyrene glutamat og arginin ga helsemessige gevinster, og disse sammenfalt med fastere tekstur • Ekstra tilsetning av aminosyrene glutamat og arginin forbedret laksens evne til å takle stress i forbindelse med slakteprosessen • Gevinst ved tilskudd av aminosyrer kan variere gjennom året og optimalt nivå, varighet og alternative fôrkilder bør vurderes. Resultatene fra denne studien har bidratt med ny kunnskap som kan benyttes i arbeidet med å forbedre filetkvaliteten så vel som helsestatus hos oppdrettslaks. Funnene gir dessuten grunnlag for å se nærmere på etablerte behovstall for innsatsfaktorer i fôr til dagens oppdrettslaks. Optimalt fôr som gir fast filet

In a previously performed study, rainbow trout with mean initial weight 1144 g was fed two experimental feeds with similar chemical composition, but differing in physical properties (high and low water stability, denoted Feed A and B, respectively). The fish was also exposed to stable or fluctuating environment (salinity, temperature and O2 saturation). The feed intake was highest in trout fed Feed B, and when kept at stable environment. The growth tended to follow the same pattern (not significantly though). At termination of the trial, the stomachs of trout fed Feed B contained the largest amounts of feed material. The stomachs of these fish also contained large amounts of free water and oil, most severely in trout kept at stable environment, coinciding with the highest feed intake. In the present experiment, the physical properties of the two feeds were further investigated. Feed A had less dust, more unbroken pellets, higher hardness, larger diameter and shorter pellets than Feed B. The apparent digestibility (ADC, %) of protein (the sum of amino acids) and most individual amino acids, starch, dry matter, energy and phosphorus was highest in Feed A. The environmental treatment also affected the ADC of some amino acids and minerals. In general however, the ADC appeared to be reduced at high feed intake. The plasma concentrations of sodium and chloride ions were not affected by the feed, but were elevated in individuals kept at the constant environment. The results clearly demonstrate that the nutritional value of a feed is affected by its physical properties. Furthermore, several of the treatment effects in the fish caused by physical feed properties, may be related to the feed intake. Nutritional value of feeds with different physical qualities
