Abstract

An electrostatic spray (ES) of liquids is a simple way to generate microdroplets with a high surface-to-volume ratio. The ES generated by electrical discharges enables a fast transfer of reactive species from plasma into the liquid for an efficient generation of plasma-activated water. Here, we present a relatively simple, versatile, and cost-effective diagnostic technique for online monitoring of ES microdroplets which enables simultaneous and synchronized electrical and optical diagnostics of an electrical discharge. This technique is based on planar laser light attenuation monitored by a large area photo-detector covered by a slit. Two variants were tested and compared—one with two lasers and another with one laser and a broadband LED lamp. This technique enables estimations of the speed and size of microdroplets (down to ∼10 μm) and allows for monitoring the dripping frequency or studying fragmentation of microdroplets and water filaments. Abstract

The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of atmospheric pressure nitrogen plasma on viability, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of normal mouse calvarial preosteoblasts (MC3T3-E1 Subclone 4), which were maintained in Hanks’ balanced salt solution (HBSS)during plasma exposure. Obtained results clearly demonstrated that short-time (4, 8, and 16 s) nitrogen plasma treatment is non-toxic to the MC3T3-E1 cells, does not affect cell morphology, promotes reosteoblasts’ proliferation, enhances osteogenic differentiation by increasing bone alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin concentration, but inhibits mineralization of extracellular matrix. The best results were achieved for 16 s exposure time and when the preosteoblasts were left in HBSS for 3 h after plasma treatment. Presented studies indicate great clinical potential of cold atmospheric nitrogen plasma for regenerative medicine applications to improve bone healing process.

Abstract

For some applications of plastic materials, such as polystyrene, an important role is played by the wettability of the material. One of the methods of modifying material properties such as water contact angle is using nonthermal plasma. In this study, a radio-frequency atmospheric-pressure plasma jet source has been applied to the surface modification of a high-impact polystyrene film. The measurements show a dependence between the change in the water contact angle and the operating parameters of a nonequilibrium plasma treatment, such as the composition of the working gas, the flow rate, the distance from the plasma zone, and the discharge power. Abstract

The paper presents experimental results concerning pre‐sowing stimulation of Thuringian Mallow (Lavatera thuringiaca L.) seeds with non‐thermal plasma generated in GlidArc reactor (dry nitrogen, atmospheric pressure) and its effect on the germination process. Five groups of seeds characterized by different exposure times were used. The effect of cold plasma on seeds was analyzed by investigation of microscopic pictures of carbon coated seed surfaces registered by means of electron scanning microscope. Visible changes in the seed surface structure could enhance the formation of micro‐pores which may be involved in water absorption, thus facilitating faster seed germination. Pre‐sowing plasma stimulation of seeds improved germination parameters such as germination capacity and germination energy for all tested groups, relative to control. The highest germination parameters were obtained for seeds stimulated with plasma for the exposure times of 2 and 5 min. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
