Introduction: skin and soft tissue infections can present from banal clinical forms to those severe enough to put the child's life at risk. Objective: to characterize serious skin and soft tissue infections in patients admitted to the "José Luis Miranda" Hospital during the period from January to December 2020. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with a population of 53 cases diagnosed with severe skin and soft tissue infections, from zero to 18 years of age, who were admitted to the services of the aforementioned hospital. Variables such as age, sex, risk factors, clinical forms of presentation, complications and stage of sepsis were taken into account. Results: 32 patients were male, with 32 patients, and those older than 6 years. Comorbidities (30.2%) and trauma (22.6%) were the most frequent risk factors. Skin abscess (37.7%) and cellulitis (32.1%) were the most frequent clinical forms of presentation. Polytherapy was applied in 43.4% of hospitalized patients. Myocardial dysfunction (24.5%) was the most frequently diagnosed complication. Conclusions: deeper clinical forms with systemic involvement such as necrotizing fasciitis and systemic staphylococcal disease were associated with advanced stages of sepsis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Los estudios de utilización de medicamentos (EUM) en sus diferentes tipos, analizan la comercialización, distribución, prescripción y uso de los medicamentos en una sociedad, con el objetivo de identificar problemas en su utilización y factores condicionantes de los mismos. Se realizó un EUM de tipo prescripción-indicación con elementos de consumo y esquema terapéutico en el que se evaluó la utilización de Azitromicina disponible en las cuatro farmacias del área de salud Mártires de Calabazar, municipio Boyeros, durante 3 meses del año 2008. Se revisaron las recetas prescriptas de este antimicrobiano durante el período de estudio, con el propósito de evaluar la prescripción teniendo en cuenta las indicaciones y la dosis total ordenada en las mismas. Los resultados más importantes incluyen que el consumo de Azitromicina en el área en el año 2008 fue de 2 DHD (Dosis Diaria Definida por 1 000 habitantes por Día). Las infecciones del aparato respiratorio fueron el motivo de prescripción más frecuente y más de la cuarta parte de las dosis prescriptas de Azitromicina fueron incorrectas. Se concluyó que la prescripción de Azitromicina fue inadecuada en más de 40% del total de recetas revisadas.Drugs usage studies (DUS) in their different variants analyze the commercialization, distribution, prescription and use of the medicaments in a society in order to identify the problems in their use and their conditioning factors. It was made a DUS of the type prescription-indication with elements of consumption and therapeutic scheme where the use of available Azitromicin in four drugstores at the primary health attention area was evaluated during a period of three months in 2008. The indicated prescriptions of this antimicrobial drug were checked during the mentioned period in order to evaluate the correct administration of it taking into account the indications and the total doses ordered by Physicians. The most important results determined that the consumption of Azitromicin in this area was of two DHD (daily defined doses each 1000 inhabitants per day). The Respiratory system infections were the most frequent causes for prescribing Azitromicin but over a quarter of the prescribed doses were incorrect. It was concluded that more than a 40 % of the evaluated prescription in the study were erroneously indicated.

Establishing an effective antimicrobial therapeutic requires choosing the appropriate antibiotic and ensuring compliance with times and doses prescribed. Problems concerning early abandonment and unfinished prescriptions due to lack of information, as well as more resistant microorganisms, have been identified as the major factors responsible for therapeutic failure in bacterial infections. This study aimed to determine the level of information among antibiotic users undergoing treatment with these drugs, and habits related to other therapies. A survey was applied to 403 users and identified great difficulties in understanding prescriptions, especially among users with no formal schooling who understood only 21 to 28% of the prescribed instructions. This same group reported having received the lowest amount of information during the consultation, with only 28.6% receiving verbal information from the prescriber on the length of course with the drug. Additionally, 21% of this group reported a tendency to use the antibiotic until symptoms resolved, without heeding the length of course prescribed. Guidance on antibiotics use should be an integral and fundamental part of effective therapy.Para se estabelecer uma terapêutica antimicrobiana eficaz, é necessário que se escolha o fármaco adequado e que este seja utilizado na dose e tempo prescritos. Abandonos precoces e o não cumprimento da prescrição, originados por falta de informação adequada, têm sido apontados, juntamente com microrganismos resistentes, como os grandes responsáveis por falhas terapêuticas no tratamento de infecções bacterianas. Este trabalho teve por objetivo conhecer o nível de informação de usuários de antibióticos sobre estes fármacos, tanto na terapêutica a que estavam sendo submetidos, quanto em seus hábitos em outras terapêuticas. Por meio de um questionário aplicado a 403 usuários, notou-se uma grande dificuldade de entendimento da prescrição, especialmente por usuários sem estudo formal, chegando a níveis de entendimento de apenas 21 a 28% das prescrições estabelecidas. Esse mesmo grupo relatou ter recebido a menor quantidade de informações durante a consulta, apenas 28,6% receberam informações verbais do prescritor sobre o tempo que deveriam utilizar o medicamento. Adicionalmente, foi percebido que 21% desse grupo informaram que têm o costume de utilizar o antibiótico até desaparecer os sintomas, sem se preocupar com o tempo prescrito. A orientação para a utilização do medicamento é parte integrante e fundamental de uma terapêutica eficaz.
