Owing to their unique optical and electronic properties, vertical van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) have attracted considerable attention in optoelectronic applications, such as photodetection, light harvesting, and light-emitting diodes. To fully harness these properties, it is crucial to understand the interfacial charge transfer (CT) and recombination dynamics across vdWHs. However, the effects of interfacial energetics and defect states on interfacial CT and recombination processes in graphene-transition metal dichalcogenide (Gr-TMD) vdWHs remain debated. Here, we investigate the interfacial CT dynamics in Gr-TMD vdWHs with different chemical compositions (W, Mo, S, and Se) and tunable interfacial energetics. We demonstrate, using ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy, that while the photo-induced electron transfer direction is universal with graphene donating electrons to TMDs, its efficiency is chalcogen-dependent: the CT efficiency of S atom-based vdWHs is 3–5 times higher than that of Se-based vdWHs thanks to the lower Schottky barrier present in S-based vdWHs. In contrast, the electron back transfer process from TMD to Gr, which defines the charge separation time, is transition metal-dependent and dominated by the mid-gap defect level of TMDs: W transition metal-based vdWHs possess extremely long charge separation, well beyond 1 ns, which is significantly longer than Mo-based vdWHs with only 10 s of ps charge separation. This difference can be traced to the much deeper mid-gap defect reported in W-based TMDs compared to Mo-based ones, resulting in modified energetics for the back electron transfer from the trapped states to graphene. Our results shed light on the role of interfacial energetics and defects by tailoring chemical compositions of TMDs on the interfacial CT and recombination dynamics in Gr-TMD vdWHs, which is pivotal for optimizing optoelectronic devices, particularly in the field of photodetection. Two-dimensional or other thin materials have high potential for use in next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. Recently, tellurium has gained much interest due to its broad applicability prospects. In this work, the physical properties of thin tellurium layers fabricated using two relatively simple and inexpensive technologies based on the deposition from a chemical solution and by thermal evaporation were compared. The morphology of the grown surfaces was analyzed using atomic force microscopy. The chemically deposited tellurium surface consists of nanometer-sized flakes, while polycrystalline layers are formed in the case of deposition by thermal evaporation. Additionally, the characteristics of the fabricated samples varied depending on their thickness, as observed in both Raman spectroscopy and THz spectroscopy measurements. Furthermore, the non-contact optical pump THz probe technique revealed that the layers had different carrier lifetimes and mobilities. The carrier lifetime of samples deposited by thermal evaporation is short, less than 40 ps, with mobility up to a few hundred cm2/V s. In contrast, chemically deposited samples have a longer carrier lifetime, ranging more than 500 ps, and superior mobility up to 1000 cm2/V s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Terahertz (THz) light, probing electronic responses near the Fermi level, is closely linked to DC transport. In this study, we investigate the in situ THz and DC conductivity of epitaxial VO 2 films near the heating-induced insulator–metal transition. We find that the THz conductivity transition occurs at lower temperatures than the DC conductivity transition, with the separation increasing with film thickness and crystallization quality. Analysis of the complex conductivity spectra attributes this separation to released carrier confinement at THz frequencies. Here, we report the frequency-dependent spectrum of ice Ih in the range of 0.2–2 THz. We confirm the presence of a feature that blue-shifts from around 1.55–1.65 THz with a decreasing temperature from 260 to 160 K. There is also a change in the trend of the refractive index of ice corresponding to a dispersion, which is also around 1.6 THz. The features are reproduced in data acquired with three commercial terahertz time-domain spectrometers. Computer-simulated spectra assign the feature to lattice translations perpendicular to the 110 and 1 ̄ 10 planes of the ice Ih crystal. The feature's existence should be recognized in the terahertz measurements of frozen aqueous solution samples to avoid false interpretations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ion hydration plays a crucial role in numerous fundamental processes. Various spectroscopic methods are employed to investigate the slowing down of hydration bond dynamics in the proximity of both anions and cations. To date, most of these studies have primarily focused on the properties of binary systems. However, in comparison to ion–water binary systems, ternary systems that involve ions, water, and organic matter are more prevalent in nature and provide more realistic insights into biological processes. This study focuses on ion hydration in water and alcohol mixture using terahertz spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The results reveal a distinct behavior depending on the type of alcohol used. Specifically, the presence of both methanol and ethanol results in the disappearance of absorption peaks associated with NaCl hydrate at low temperatures. In contrast, tert-butanol does not exhibit such an effect, and isopropanol demonstrates a more complex response. By combining these terahertz spectroscopic findings with low-temperature XRD data, we gain insights into the formation, or lack thereof, of NaCl · 2H2O hydrate crystals. Crucially, our observations suggest a dominant correlation between the polarity of the alcohol molecules and its impact on the Na+ hydration. Strongly polar alcohols preferentially solvating the Na+ ion lead to the failure of hydrate formation, while weakly polar alcohols do not have this effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyze the operation of the hot-electron FET bolometers with the graphene channels (GCs) and the gate barrier layers. Such bolometers use the thermionic emission of the hot electrons heated by incident-modulated THz radiation. The hot electrons transfer from the GC into the metal gate. As the THz detectors, these bolometers can operate at room temperature. We show that the response and ultimate modulation frequency of the GC-FET bolometers are determined by the efficiency of the hot-electron energy transfer to the lattice and the GC side contacts due to the 2DEG lateral thermal conductance. The dependences of these mechanisms on the band structure and geometrical parameters open the way for the GC-FET bolometers optimization, in particular, for the enhancement of the maximum modulation frequency. We experimentally investigate phase shift gained by electromagnetic radiation transmitted through a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) on a dielectric substrate. We systematically examined the dependence of the phase shift on the radiation frequency and 2DES electron density for the GaAs semiconductor substrate. A theoretical approach was developed that found good agreement with experimental results. We demonstrate a practically achievable phase shift of 105 °. Obtained findings pave the way for the design of terahertz devices that can manipulate the radiation phase in a controlled and precise manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we present a polarization-insensitive terahertz metamaterial designed by stacking resonators capable of providing ultra-wideband terahertz transmissions. Our design includes a square ring resonator situated between two windmill-shaped resonators, separated by a polyimide spacer. We optimized the spacer thickness to achieve a broadband response in transmission. These optimized broadband metamaterial designs were fabricated through multiple steps of the photolithography process. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy of the fabricated samples indicates broadband terahertz transmission, in agreement with both simulation findings and results calculated from the transmission line model for the multi-layered metamaterial geometry. Our research reveals a strong near-field coupling between resonators, leading to wideband transmission of terahertz waves. The stacking of these metamaterials is crucial in designing broadband bandpass filters and broadband modulators for terahertz photonics while keeping the resonance strength almost intact. We report the real-valued static and complex-valued quasi-static anisotropic permittivity parameters of rare-earth scandate orthorhombic single crystal GdScO3 (GSO), TbScO3 (TSO), and DyScO3 (DSO). Employing continuous-wave terahertz spectroscopy (0.2–1 THz), the complex permittivity was extracted using an anisotropic ambient-film-ambient model. Data obtained from multiple samples of the same oxides and different surface cuts were analyzed simultaneously. The zero-frequency limit of the modeled data indicates that at room temperature the real part of the dielectric tensor components for GSO are ɛa = 22.7, ɛb = 19.3, and ɛc = 28.1; for DSO, ɛa = 20.3, ɛb = 17.4, and ɛc = 31.1; and for TSO, ɛa = 21.6, ɛb = 18.1, and ɛc = 30.3, with a, b, and c crystallographic axes constituting the principal directions for the permittivity tensor. These results are in excellent agreement with expectations from theoretical computations and with scarcely available data from previous experimental studies. Furthermore, our results evidence a noticeable attenuation, which increases with frequency, and are very significant especially at the higher frequency end of the measurement and along the c-direction in all samples. We suggest the attenuation is most likely caused by the onset of absorption due to long-wavelength active optical phonon modes. These results are important for electronic and potential sub-terahertz applications (e.g., quarter-wave plate) benefiting from the large index contrast along different directions in these materials. Electro-optic sampling of terahertz waves by noncollinearly propagating femtosecond laser pulses in electro-optic crystals can provide high efficiency and high spectral resolution of terahertz detection with various types of crystals and laser wavelengths, unlike the conventional collinear scheme. We develop an analytical theory of noncollinear electro-optic sampling detection technique that describes the modulation of the probe laser beam polarization as a result of nonlinear interaction between the optical and terahertz fields. The theory accounts for finite widths of the terahertz and probe beams. It is found that noncollinear scheme operates as a low-pass terahertz filter with the frequency cut-off determined by the width of the probe beam and the crossing angle of the terahertz and probe beams. We apply the theory to two practical situations: sampling of terahertz waves by fiber laser pulses (1.55 μ m wavelength) in a GaAs crystal and sampling by Ti:sapphire laser pulses (800 nm wavelength) in a LiNbO 3 crystal. A novel bilateral impact-ionization-avalanche-transit-time (BIMPATT) diode based on AlGaN/GaN two-dimensional electron gas is proposed in this article. The BIMPATT is compatible with the available GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) manufacturing process and has a shorter actual electron transit distance than existing HEMT-like IMPATT (HIMPATT) diodes. Compared with the same-sized HIMPATT, the optimum frequency of BIMPATT rises from 320 to 420 GHz and possesses a far wider operating frequency band, especially in the near 0.9 THz range. The maximum DC-RF conversion efficiency rises from 12.9% to 17.6%. The maximum RF power of BIMPATT is 3.18 W/mm, which is similar to 3.12 W/mm of the HIMPATT. Furthermore, our simulation demonstrated that the characteristics of BIMPATT are significantly affected by the length of anode and the thickness of the AlGaN barrier layer. The effects of ohmic contact resistance and background impurities on BIMPATT are also taken into account. We present a detailed study on the temperature-dependent THz spectra of the polycrystalline amino acids, L-serine and L-cysteine, for wavenumbers from 20 to 120 cm−1 and temperatures from 4 to 300 K. Even though the structure of these two amino acids is very similar, with a sulfur atom in the side chain of cysteine instead of an oxygen atom in serine, the excitation spectra are drastically different. Obviously, the vibrational dynamics strongly depend on the ability of cysteine to form sulfur–hydrogen bonds. In addition, cysteine undergoes an order–disorder type phase transition close to 80 K, documented by additional specific heat experiments, with accompanying anomalies in the THz results. On increasing temperatures, well-defined vibrational excitations exhibit significant shifts in the eigenfrequencies with concomitant line-broadening yielding partly overlapping modes. Interestingly, several modes completely lose all their dipolar strength and are unobservable under ambient conditions. Comparing the recent results to the published work utilizing THz, Raman, and neutron-scattering techniques, as well as with ab initio simulations, we aim at a consistent analysis of the results ascribing certain eigenfrequencies to distinct collective lattice modes. We document that THz spectra can be used to fine-tune the parameters of model calculations and as fingerprint properties of certain amino acids. In addition, we analyzed the low-temperature heat capacity of both the compounds and detected strong excess contributions compared to the canonical Debye behavior of crystalline solids, indicating soft excitations and a strongly enhanced phonon-density of states at low frequencies. The dispersion properties of the absorption coefficients [α(ν)] of different multi-component silicate oxide glasses have been studied in the frequency region below the boson peak by using THz-time-domain spectroscopy. The value of α(ν)/ν2 has been shown to exhibit a minimum level (R) at low frequency and subsequently a linear increase in the form of r(ν/νBP + E) with increasing frequency, where νBP is the boson peak frequency and R, r, and E are material-specific constants. It has also been found that R ∝ r and E is a constant common to most glasses. This α(ν)/ν2 behavior is ascribed to the dispersion property of the light-vibration coupling coefficient under the reasonable vibrational density of state function. The minimum (constant) and linear terms of the α(ν)/ν2 spectrum are originated from the physical/chemical disorder-induced charge fluctuations in the long-range scale (constant term) and short-range scale (linear term), respectively. The fluctuating charge (σ1) caused by uncorrelated, long-range disorders has primary significance for determining the sub-THz absorption dispersion properties, and its value has been determined for each glass material. Two-dimensional terahertz–infrared–visible (2D TIRV) spectroscopy directly measures the coupling between quantum high-frequency vibrations and classical low-frequency modes of molecular motion. In addition to coupling strength, the signal intensity in 2D TIRV spectroscopy can also depend on the selection rules of the excited transitions. Here, we explore the selection rules in 2D TIRV spectroscopy by studying the coupling between the high-frequency CH3 stretching and low-frequency vibrations of liquid dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Different excitation pathways are addressed using variations in laser pulse timing and different polarizations of exciting pulses and detected signals. The DMSO signals generated via different excitation pathways can be readily distinguished in the spectrum. The intensities of different excitation pathways vary unequally with changes in polarization. We explain how this difference stems from the intensities of polarized and depolarized Raman and hyper-Raman spectra of high-frequency modes. Ultrafast optically excited ferromagnetic (FM)/nonmagnetic (NM) multilayer heterostructures have been demonstrated recently as efficient, high-power, and broadband sources of terahertz (THz) electromagnetic radiation. Since these spintronic THz emitters exploit the conversion from ultrafast spin to charge current, either in bulk or at the interface, the THz pulses inhere all the characteristics of the involved mechanisms and dynamics associated with spin-charge interconversion processes. Deconvolving the same requires meticulous and careful experimentation and analysis. In this article, we review the current state-of-the-art in this field and provide a perspective on the emerging phenomena, which are prospering as new research avenues and demonstrate application potential for futuristic THz technologies. In the process of developing efficient spintronic THz emitters by optimizing various conditions including those with material parameters and excitation light, it turns out that THz emission spectroscopy itself can be a unique experimental tool for probing microscopic dynamical magnetic and spintronic effects, induced by femtosecond laser pulse excitation, in a noncontact and noninvasive manner. Several breakthroughs can be listed from the literature in this regard from the last decade. Just recently, ultrafast orbitronics is another dimension that is taking shape and will impact the field immensely. A fair account to this topic is also presented in the article. Understanding how proteins work requires a thorough understanding of their internal dynamics. Proteins support a wide range of motions, from the femtoseconds to seconds time scale, relevant to crucial biological functions. In this context, the term "protein collective dynamics" refers to the complex patterns of coordinated motions of numerous atoms throughout the protein in the sub-picosecond time scale (terahertz frequency region). It is hypothesized that these dynamics have a substantial impact on the regulation of functional dynamical mechanisms, including ligand binding and allosteric signalling, charge transport direction, and the regulation of thermodynamic and thermal transport properties. Using the theoretical framework of hydrodynamics, the collective dynamics of proteins had previously been described in a manner akin to that of simple liquids, i.e. in terms of a single acoustic-like excitation, related to intra-protein vibrational motions. Here, we employ an interacting-mode model to analyse the results from molecular dynamics simulations and we unveil that the vibrational landscape of proteins is populated by multiple acoustic-like and low-frequency optic-like modes, with mixed symmetry and interfering with each other. We propose an interpretation at the molecular level of the observed scenario that we relate to the side-chains and the hydrogen-bonded networks dynamics. We fabricated a photoconductive antenna (PCA) with Er-doped InAs quantum dot (QD) layers on a GaAs substrate and demonstrated THz wave generation with 1.5 μm pump. In terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), PCAs require high mobility and short lifetimes of photocarriers since the carriers need to respond rapidly to optical pulses for broad THz generation and detection with a high time resolution. In this study, to achieve PCA operation at an optical communication wavelength band of 1.5 μm, a substrate for a PCA was fabricated using stacked Er-doped-InAs QD layers. Then, photocurrent measurements were performed to observe optical absorption in the 1.5 μm band. The results indicated the high capability of the PCA for THz wave generation and detection, in fact, which enabled us to generate the THz wave in the 1.5 μm band optical system. We have calculated the theoretical terahertz spectrum of the amino acid l-tyrosine using density functional theory (DFT). We tried two electron density functionals, Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) and PBE-d3. PBE-d3 includes dispersion corrections to build in van der Waals interactions, which play a role in intermolecular bonding. Both DFT models predicted a low-frequency mode that has not been previously reported. We designed an experiment to search for this mode. Using a deliberately thick sample, intense synchrotron radiation, low temperatures, and temperature variation has enabled us to observe a new resonance at 1.79 ±0.01 THz. While the PBE and PBE-d3 spectra are similar and both match the low-energy experimental data, overall the PBE-d3 appears to be slightly superior. Further refinement still of the functional may lead to even better agreement with experiment above 2.4 THz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phase-change alloy Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST) forms a favorable material platform for modern optics, photonics, and electronics thanks to a pronounced increase in conductivity with thermally induced phase transitions from amorphous (a-GST) into cubic (c-GST) and then hexagonal (h-GST) crystalline states at the temperatures of ≃ 150 and ≃ 300 ° C, respectively. Nevertheless, the data on broadband electrodynamic response of distinct GST phases are still missing, which hamper the design and implementation of related devices and technologies. In this paper, a-, c-, and h-GST films on a sapphire substrate are studied using broadband dielectric spectroscopy. For all GST phases, complex dielectric permittivity is retrieved using Drude and Lorentz models in the frequency range of 0.06 – 50 THz or the wavelength range of ≃ 5000 – 6 μ m. A contribution from the free charge-carriers conductivity and vibrational modes to the broadband response of an analyte is quantified. In this way, the Drude model allows for estimation of the static (direct current—DC) and dynamic (at 1.0 THz) conductivity values, caused by motions of free charges only, which are as high as σ DC ≃ 15 and 40 S/cm and σ 1.0 THz ≃ 8.8 and 28.6 S/cm for the c- and h-GSTs, respectively. This overall agrees with the results of electrical measurements of GST conductivity using the four-point probe technique. Multi‐level anticounterfeiting tags have been developed using a combination of different materials. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixed with titanium dioxide (TiO2) is used to produce flexible substrates. Fluorescent Opuntia Ficus‐indica (OFI) extract dissolved with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is then sprayed over the substrate to create a random, yet unique deposition of droplets. Photographs of the tags are taken under UV illumination at different angles and analyzed through the scale‐invariant feature transform (SIFT) algorithm to extract their unique features. The SIFT analysis reveals hundreds to thousands of matched features when a given tag is compared with itself, whereas this number drops to tens for different tags. To enhance the security of the tags, ITO is sputtered onto one of them in the form of a pattern formed by a patch array exhibiting a specific fingerprint at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The evaluation of ITO reflectance shows that each patch array has a unique and unpredictable response stemming from its distinct electro‐optical characteristics. The non‐deterministic response of sprayed dye droplets and ITO patches enables the realization of two‐level authentication, which is difficult to replicate at a reasonable cost. 2D conjugated metal–organic frameworks (2D c‐MOFs) are emerging as unique electroactive materials for electronics and spintronics. The structural design and discovery of Kagome‐type 2D c‐MOFs exhibiting a metallic state are of paramount significance, yet remain rarely explored. Here, the solution synthesis of benzenehexol‐based 2D c‐MOFs based is presented on the tetrahydroxy‐1,4‐quinone (THQ) ligand. This study shows that controlling the pH of the reaction system to ≈7.5 yields an energetically favorable nonporous Cu3(C6O6) with a Kagome lattice, while at a pH of ≈10, the known porous Cu3(C6O6)2 with a honeycomb lattice is obtained. The crystal structures of both Cu3(C6O6)2 and Cu3(C6O6) are resolved with near‐atomic precision (resolution, 1.8 Å) using an imaging technique. Unlike the p‐type semiconducting behavior of Cu3(C6O6)2, theoretical studies identify Cu3(C6O6) as a metal due to its unique structural topology. The metallic state of Cu3(C6O6) is experimentally validated by terahertz time‐domain spectroscopy (THz‐TDS), which shows an increase in conductivity upon cooling. Scattering‐type scanning near‐field optical microscopy (s‐SNOM) measurements further support these findings by revealing an increase in normalized reflectivity with decreasing temperature. Many non-destructive optical testing methods are currently used for material research, providing various information about material parameters. At RECENDT, a multimodal experimental setup has been designed that combines terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT), infrared (IR), and Raman spectroscopy with a tensile test stage. This setup aims to gather material information such as crystallinity and optical parameters of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during a tensile test. The setup compares common IR and Raman spectroscopy and the less common optical methods THz and OCT. Complementarity is achieved through different frequency ranges and measurement approaches, resulting in different measured optical material parameters and depths. During tensile testing, HDPE samples with varying crystallinity were analysed, and the determined optical parameters such as refractive index, birefringence, scattering coefficient of decay, and penetration depth can be correlated with the change in crystallinity. These findings demonstrate that the optical methods and their outcomes can be interconnected. With further optimization of the experimental setup, it would be possible to observe the alignment of fibres in fibre composite panels and the stress distribution of polymers effectively. Terahertz spectroscopy systems, which integrate terahertz sources and detectors, have important applications in many fields such as materials science and security checking. Based on highly sensitive frequency up-conversion detection, large dynamic range spectral measurements in a terahertz region are reported. Our system realized the detection sensitivity at a 10 aJ level with a 2-(3-(4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dime-thylcyclohex-2-enylidene) malononitrile (OH1) crystal and a dynamic range up to seven orders. Based on this system, we verified the validity of the spectral measurement with tests which were conducted on monohydrate glucose, anhydrous glucose and mixed tablet samples with a thickness of 0.8 mm in 1~3 THz, respectively. Also, a mini coppery elbow tube with an inner diameter of 1 mm was used for the transmission of a terahertz wave to simulate some strip biological tissue samples. By allowing terahertz to transmit through this tube filled with 0.5 g glucose powder, we successfully obtained the absorption spectrum with a minimum transmittance at the absorption peak in the order of 10−4. Particle-reinforced polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are often used as radar-absorbing materials (RAM) in aircraft stealth applications. The thickness evaluation of such multilayered coatings with micrometre-level thickness is highly challenging from single-side access. In this study, we used Terahertz Time-domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in the transmission mode to extract the refractive index of the dielectric coatings for measuring the thickness using the time-of-flight method. A numerical study based on the Finite Element method (FEM) has also been developed to validate the transmission experiments. A frequency-dependent complex dielectric parameters must be considered for coatings with high absorption in the THz regime. This was addressed by performing the finite element simulations in a frequency domain. The thickness of each layer of a multi-layered coating is estimated by carrying out the experiments in reflection mode. Since the interface echoes were overlapping, a deconvolution algorithm and frequency thresholding were employed to reconstruct the signals reflected from the different interfaces. Using this technique, the thickness of each layer of coating is estimated accurately in a single measurement, which was challenging to measure using other conventional non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. The paper reports the study of surface roughness based opto-mechanical properties of Chlorobutyl (CIIR)/Natural Rubber (NR) 70/30 polymers filled with different contents of hybrid (CB/CN) using indigenously designed THz spectrophotometer between 1 and 2.0 THz range. The carbon black (CB) and Carbon nano powders were mixed between 20 and 2.0–7.5 Phr range in the chlorobutyl and natural rubber matrix for improvising their surface quality and mechanical strength. The physical and structural changes were ascertained in terms of transmission, refractive indices and absorption coefficients. The percentage of filler also influences the morphology and surface roughness quality of the rubber due to intercalation and measured in terms of surface roughness factor 'g' optical impedance 'z' and reflection coefficients between 0.1 and 2.0 THz range. The obtained values of optical impedance lie between 220.2 and 235.6 Ω range and were correlated with the mechanical strength of the rubber samples. Measurements of terahertz absorption spectra of pharmaceutical hydrate samples are achieved under a normal humidity condition by combining terahertz frequency-domain spectroscopy with a newly proposed method for suppressing absorption peaks caused by water vapor. In this method, only simple mathematical operations such as subtraction, thresholding, interpolation, and smoothing are applied to extinction (or absorbance) data obtained by locating samples under a normal humidity condition. By considering the difference in spectral line width between narrow absorption peaks caused by water vapor and the relatively wide absorption peaks caused by active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in solid forms, the absorption peaks caused by water vapor can be effectively suppressed without affecting the absorption peaks of the APIs in the samples. In the present study, levofloxacin hydrates were used as samples to investigate the performance of the proposed method. Spectra were obtained under both dry and normal humidity conditions. The temperature of the samples was raised from 300 to 363 K to dehydrate them and brought back to 313 K to observe hydration under the normal humidity condition. Spectra obtained under the normal humidity condition were processed with the proposed method. The spectra of the hydrates obtained under the dry condition were slightly different from those obtained under the normal humidity condition and processed by our method. Dehydration during the measurements under the dry condition was suggested. Stable and reliable results are expected by measuring spectra under normal humidity conditions and applying the proposed method to suppress absorption peaks by water vapor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present novel PIN photodiode (PD) continuous wave (cw) terahertz (THz) emitters with an increased responsivity and reduced substrate thickness compared to the state-of-the-art. Our improved devices feature up to 4 dB higher output power below 500 GHz with maximum power of -0.53 dBm at 115 GHz and strongly reduced THz absorption of the substrate for frequencies above 3 THz. In order to address the problem that existing methods combining spectral data and machine learning for wood species identification rely on labeled samples, this study introduces unsupervised learning into the field of wood identification. It proposes a novel wood-identification model called DCVAE (deep conditional variational autoencoder)-PLCAE (pseudo-label convolutional autoencoders). Terahertz time-domain spectra of wood samples at breast height of five broadleaf and five coniferous species were obtained (40 samples of each species of wood, 400 in total). A conditional variational autoencoder was applied to augment the terahertz spectroscopy dataset. Subsequently, a pseudo-label-guided deep clustering model was developed to extract more discriminative deep features. The model was compared with three traditional clustering algorithms and four deep clustering methods. Clustering experiments and visualization results show that the comprehensive clustering performance of DCVAE-PLCAE is better than the other comparative algorithms and that the extracted low-dimensional features has a more straightforward structure. The algorithm in this study can solve the problems of fewer labeled samples and the difficulty of extracting discriminative features by traditional clustering algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As artificially engineered subwavelength periodic structures, terahertz (THz) metasurface devices exhibit an equivalent dielectric constant and dispersion relation akin to those of natural materials with specific THz absorption peaks, describable using the Lorentz model. Traditional verification methods typically involve testing structural arrays using reflected and transmitted optical paths. However, directly detecting the dielectric constant of individual units has remained a significant challenge. In this study, we employed a THz time-domain spectrometer-based scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (THz-TDS s-SNOM) to investigate the near-field nanoscale spectrum and resonant mode distribution of a single-metal double-gap split-ring resonator (DSRR) and rectangular antenna. The findings reveal that they exhibit a dispersion relation similar to that of natural materials in specific polarization directions, indicating that units of THz metasurface can be analogous to those of molecular structures in materials. This work develops a polarization-dependent analytical model using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) for computing strain in materials. The model establishes a correlation between volumetric strain and the change in time of arrival for a THz pulse by using the dielectrostrictive properties, variations in doping particle density, and changes in the thickness of the sample resulting from Poisson's effects. The analytical model is validated through strain mapping of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) doped with passive highly dielectrostrictive strontium titanate (STO). Two experiments, using an open-hole tensile and a circular edge-notch specimen are conducted to show the efficacy of the proposed. The stress relaxation behavior of the composite is measured and accounted for to prevent changes in strain during the measurement window. The THz strain mapping results are compared with the finite element model (FEM) and surface strain measurements using the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The experimental findings exhibit sensitivity to material features such as particle clumping and edge effects. The THz strain map shows a strong agreement with FEM and DIC results, thus demonstrating the applicability of this technique for surface and sub-surface strain mapping in polymeric composites. Vitamin C (VC) and Vitamin B9 (VB9) are essential micronutrients integral to numerous biological functions and critical for maintaining human health. The rapid detection of these vitamins is important for verifying nutritional supplements and aiding in clinical diagnoses. This study combined terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) with metasurface technology to develop a fast, sensitive, and non-destructive detection method for VC and VB9. Firstly, we determined the characteristic absorption peaks and molecular vibration modes of VC and VB9 within the 0.5–4.0 THz range through quantum chemical calculation and THz-TDS measurement. Then, we designed and fabricated a metasurface biosensor to match its resonance peak with the communal peak of VC and VB9, enhancing the interaction between THz waves and these vitamins. Using this biosensor, we analyzed solutions with different concentrations of VC and VB9. An increase in vitamin concentrations resulted in frequency shifts in the THz resonance peak. Quantifiable relationships between frequency shifts and the vitamin concentrations were established. The detection limits achieved were 158.82 ng/µL for VC and 353.57 ng/µL for VB9, respectively. This method not only demonstrates high sensitivity but also simplifies the operational process, offering an innovative tool for applications in food safety monitoring and clinical diagnostics. Terahertz (THZ) spectroscopy has emerged as a superior label-free sensing technology in the detection, identification, and quantification of biomolecules in various biological samples. However, the limitations in identification and discrimination sensitivity of current methods impede the wider adoption of this technology. In this article, a meticulously designed metasurface is proposed for molecular fingerprint enhancement, consisting of a periodic array of lithium tantalate triangular prism tetramers arranged in a square quartz lattice. The physical mechanism is explained by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The metasurface achieves a high quality factor (Q-factor) of 231 and demonstrates excellent THz sensing capabilities with a figure of merit (FoM) of 609. By varying the incident angle of the THz wave, the molecular fingerprint signal is strengthened, enabling the highly sensitive detection of trace amounts of analyte. Consequently, cinnamoylglycine can be detected with a sensitivity limit as low as 1.23   μ g · c m − 2 . This study offers critical insights into the advanced application of THz waves in biomedicine, particularly for the detection of urinary biomarkers in various diseases, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Terahertz technology has the potential to have a large impact in myriad fields, such as biomedical science, spectroscopy, and communications. Making these applications practical requires efficient, reliable, and low‐cost devices. Photoconductive switches (PCS), devices capable of emitting and detecting terahertz pulses, are a technology that needs more efficiency when working at telecom wavelength excitation (1550 nm) to exploit the advantages this wavelength offers. ErAs:InGaAs is a semiconductor nanocomposite working at this energy; however, high dark resistivity is challenging due to a high electron concentration as the Fermi level lies in the conduction band. To increase dark resistivity, ErAs:InGaAlBiAs material is used as the active material in a PCS detecting Terahertz pulses. ErAs nanoparticles reduce the carrier lifetime to subpicosecond values required for short temporal resolution, while ErAs pins the effective Fermi level in the host material bandgap. Unlike InGaAs, InGaAlBiAs offers enough freedom for band engineering to have a material compatible with a 1550 nm pump and a Fermi level deep in the bandgap, meaning low carrier concentration and high dark resistivity. Band engineering is possible by incorporating aluminum to lift the conduction band edge to the Fermi level and bismuth to keep a bandgap compatible with 1550 nm excitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hundreds of nanometer-thick metal layers are used as electrical conductors in various technologies and research fields. The intensity of the radiation transmitted by such devices is a small fraction and is often neglected. Here, it is shown that intense terahertz time-domain spectroscopy can probe the absolute electro-optical properties of a 100 nm thick gold sample in transmission geometry without the need to apply electrical contacts or handle wires. The terahertz conductivity of the metal film agrees with that obtained from standard contact measurements of the static component within the error bars. This experimental approach can help to quantify the electrical properties of opaque and conductive materials such as the composite electrodes used in photovoltaic or electrochemical applications, and in the quality control of metal films. The polymorphic behavior of conjugated polymers enables tunable optoelectronic properties, but their transport mechanism remains elusive due to the inherent complexity and uncontrollability of polymorphic self‐assembly behaviors and electronic processes at various length scales, alongside the ambiguous relationship between solution and solid states. Herein, precise control of multi‐level supramolecular self‐assembly of a polymorphic conjugated polymer, N‐PDPP4T‐HD with two distinct semi‐crystalline aggregated phases (β1 and β2) via solvent engineering is demonstrated. β1 forms 1D worm‐like nanostructures in solution, whereas β2 generates 2D nanoscale lamellar configuration, confirmed by experimental observation and molecular dynamic simulation. Such solution‐state features are inherited in the solid state (1D nanofibers for β1 and 2D granular‐like structures for β2). X‐ray characterizations reveal larger crystalline domains on the nanometer scale, reduced π‐stacking distance on the Ångstrom scale, and diminished paracrystallinity disorder for solid‐state β2. Going beyond conventional DC transistor characterizations, contact‐free ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy to unveil AC short‐range, intrinsic transport properties is employed. Longer charge carrier scattering time and thus intrinsic mobility of β2 result in threefold higher short‐range photoconductivity than β1. This work establishes the “solution structure – solid structure – local transport” relation in polymorphic conjugated polymers and provides new opportunities for high‐performance plastic electronic devices. Accurate monitoring of steel plate coating thickness is crucial in construction quality control and durability assessments. To address this challenge, this study introduces a terahertz time-domain reflection spectroscopy based on a BP neural network model to achieve a quantitative visualization characterization of coating thickness. The BP neural network eliminates the inherent dependence of terahertz reflection spectroscopy on the refractive index value in thickness calculation. This trained BP neural network model effectively establishes a functional relationship between signal feature parameters and the corresponding thickness values. Additionally, the proposed model can innovatively measure different coating materials' refractive indexes, revealing the corresponding values for the black paint, white paint, epoxy resin, and rubber as 2.212, 1.967, 1.924, and 2.185, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate the trained BP neural network model possesses remarkable accuracy in predicting coating thickness within the scanning area, achieving a precision level exceeding 96%. This method enables the visualization of coating thickness and the extraction of thickness characterization values. Furthermore, using the thickness imaging results as a reference, the method can accurately identify the thickness abnormalities across the scanning area, locating the position and size of potential defects such as internal scratches and foreign object defects. During the preparation of high dilutions, repeated external vibration (shaking) is used. We hypothesized that it was the vibration treatment, and not the negligible content of the initial substance, that underlies the activity of highly diluted preparations. In order to test this, the vibration was separated from the dilution process. After vibrating two tubes together on a vortex mixer (one containing water and the other the initial substance) the electrical conductivity and radio frequency radiation intensity of water differed from the unvibrated control, and the ability to exert a modifying effect on the target solution appeared, as assessed using ELISA and terahertz spectroscopy, appeared. Thus, the properties of the neutral carrier (water) changed after non-contact exposure to the initial substance. We have named this process 'crossing' and its products 'aqueous iterations of the initial substance'. Several aqueous iterations with different physical properties were obtained, some of which have a modifying effect and others cause various chemical (catalytic) and biological (antiviral) effects similar to those of the initial substance. This indicates that during crossing, substances enter into post-vibration supramolecular interactions. At the nanoscale level, aqueous iterations and the initial substance are structurally symmetrical, which allows us to assume that the preservation of the symmetry of substances subjected to vibration treatment is the basis of the post-vibration interaction phenomenon. Background: Paclitaxel is a widely used cancer treatment drug that has a significant inhibitory effect on cervical cancer cells (HeLa cells). This study aims to investigate the effects of paclitaxel on HeLa cells and evaluate the application of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors in this process. Methods: We utilized an SPR biosensor in conjunction with THz spectroscopy to measure the terahertz absorbance spectra of HeLa cells exposed to various concentrations of paclitaxel. The minimum number of cells used for detection was 15.25 × 105. At the same time, cell proliferation levels were assessed through proliferation assays and compared with the terahertz spectroscopy data. Results: The experimental results indicated that with the increasing concentration of paclitaxel, the terahertz absorbance spectra of HeLa cells exhibited a blue shift, and cell proliferation was significantly inhibited. The results of the proliferation assays were consistent with the terahertz spectroscopy data, validating the effectiveness of this method. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the combination of THz spectroscopy and SPR biosensors is a promising technology that can provide a simple, rapid, and low-cost method for studying chemistry–biology relationships, especially in the field of drug evaluation. The terahertz (THz) region of the electromagnetic spectrum, spanning from 0.1 to 10 THz, offers unique opportunities for imaging, spectroscopy, and communication applications. However, the potential of THz technologies has been limited by the availability of efficient and versatile THz emitters. Spintronic THz emitters (STEs), leveraging the ultrafast dynamics of electron spins in magnetic materials, have emerged as a promising solution to this challenge. STEs offer significant advantages, including broad bandwidth, high power output, and room-temperature operation, positioning them at the forefront of THz technology development. Despite these advances, understanding the operational principles and improving the performance of STEs remain areas of active research. This review focuses on the theoretical models that describe the behavior of STEs, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the underlying physics and suggest directions for future enhancements. Through a detailed examination of these models, the review seeks to clarify the basics of the physics driving STE performance and highlight innovative strategies for their optimization and application expansion. Wafer-scale rare-earth iron garnet (RIG) single crystal thick films were fabricated on 3-in. gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrates using liquid phase epitaxy. The terahertz transmittance of the RIG crystals improved after removing the GGG substrate by polishing. The time-domain spectra at Terahertz (THz) frequencies indicate the existence of a magneto-optical effect in RIG samples. The results indicate that the RIG samples exhibit a high refractive index of ∼4.50 within the 0.1–1.0 THz frequency range, a transmittance of around 40%, and an absorption rate of only 10–50 cm−1. The Faraday rotation angles of the thick single-crystal films of the RIG samples were measured using a THz-TDS system. The RIG has a thickness of ∼330 μm. The Faraday rotation angles of RIG crystals at THz frequencies can reach up to 16° when an external magnetic field of 0.18 T is applied. The Verdet constants of the RIG sample were calculated to be ∼120°/mm/T. To improve the transmittance of the RIG sample, epoxy resin and polymethylpentene (TPX) were used as anti-reflective films. The transmittance of the RIG sample increased by ∼5% for the 80 μm thick epoxy and about 10% for the 320 μm thick TPX. Therefore, this RIG single crystal thick film can achieve a low loss, a high transmittance, and a strong magneto-optical effect in the terahertz region with the cooperation of a reflection-reducing film. To investigate the novel quantum dynamic behaviors of magnetic materials that arise from complex spin–spin interactions, it is necessary to probe the magnetic response at a speed greater than the spin-relaxation and dephasing processes. Recently developed two-dimensional (2D) terahertz magnetic resonance (THz-MR) spectroscopy techniques use the magnetic components of laser pulses, and this allows investigation of the details of the ultrafast dynamics of spin systems. For such investigations, quantum treatment—not only of the spin system itself but also of the environment surrounding the spin system—is important. In our method, based on the theory of multidimensional optical spectroscopy, we formulate nonlinear THz-MR spectra using an approach based on the numerically rigorous hierarchical equations of motion. We conduct numerical calculations of both linear (1D) and 2D THz-MR spectra for a linear chiral spin chain. The pitch and direction of chirality (clockwise or anticlockwise) are determined by the strength and sign of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI). We show that not only the strength but also the sign of the DMI can be evaluated through the use of 2D THz-MR spectroscopic measurements, while 1D measurements allow us to determine only the strength. Pulsed terahertz (THz) electric fields enable various coherent THz imaging modes, such as reflection tomography, spectral imaging, and computed tomography (CT) for nondestructive inspection, quality control, and material characterization. The extension of coherent THz imaging modes to moving objects has been regarded as key to their social implementation. This Tutorial focuses on two-dimensional spatiotemporal (2D-ST) THz imaging of objects moving in one direction with constant speed as a promising means of enabling real-time coherent THz imaging. In 2D-ST THz imaging, the temporal waveform and line image of the THz pulse are simultaneously acquired without the need for mechanical scanning of the time delay and sample position using a combination of non-collinear 2D free-space electro-optic sampling with THz line-imaging optics. This 2D-ST THz imaging boosts the imaging rates of THz reflection tomography, THz spectral imaging, and THz CT to levels that are applicable to moving objects. The advanced THz reflection tomography and THz spectral imaging that result from the assistance of 2D-ST THz imaging achieve real-time line imaging of cross sections and spectral signatures, respectively. Subsequently, this enables in-line total inspection of objects moving on a translation stage or a conveyor belt. A THz CT system using real-time line projection of a THz beam is effectively applied to a 2D spectral cross section of a continuously rotating object. 2D-ST THz imaging enables the functional THz imaging of moving objects in various practical applications. We evaluate the terahertz (THz) detectors based on field-effect transistor (FET) with the graphene channel (GC) and a floating metal gate (MG) separated from the GC by a black-phosphorus (b-P) or black-arsenic (b-As) barrier layer. The operation of these GC-FETs is associated with the heating of the two-dimensional electron gas in the GC by impinging THz radiation leading to thermionic emission of the hot electrons from the GC to the MG. This results in the variation of the floating gate potential, which affects the source–drain current. At the THz radiation frequencies close to the plasmonic resonance frequencies in the gated GC, the variation of the source–drain current and, hence, the detector responsivity can be resonantly large. In this paper, we study terahertz generation through optical rectification in reflection at normal incidence in a dielectric nonlinear crystal. We first analyze, with a nonlinear optical model, the sample parameters (thickness, absorption at both laser and terahertz wavelengths, etc.) for which a terahertz optical rectification reflection scheme is preferable to the common transmission scheme. Then, we report our experimental observations of a reflected terahertz signal generated at the surface of a ZnTe crystal. The reflected terahertz signal shares all the characteristics of a signal generated in transmission but is not limited by absorption losses in the crystal, thereby providing a broader bandwidth. At high pump laser power, the signal exhibits saturation, which is caused by the decrease of the nonlinear susceptibility due to photocarriers generated by two-photon absorption. This reflection scheme could be of great importance for terahertz microscopy of opaque materials like, e.g., humid samples or samples exhibiting strong absorption bands or to study samples for which the transmitted signal cannot be recorded. Terahertz molecular motions are often probed by high-frequency molecular oscillators in different types of non-linear vibrational spectroscopy. Recently developed two-dimensional terahertz-infrared-visible spectroscopy allows direct measuring of this coupling and, thus, obtaining site-specific terahertz vibrational spectrum. However, these data are affected by the intensity and phase of the employed laser pulses. In this work, we develop a method of extracting sample response—representing solely physical properties of a material—from experimental spectra. Using dimethyl sulfoxide as a model molecule to verify this method, we measure the coupling between C–H stretch vibration of its methyl groups and terahertz intramolecular twist and wagging modes. We investigate terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) as a non-destructive and non-contact technique for depth profiling of dopants in semiconductors. THz temporal waveforms transmitted through silicon-ion-implanted semi-insulating gallium arsenide substrates, as-implanted or post-annealed by rapid thermal annealing, were analyzed by assuming a multi-layered Gaussian refractive index profile in the ∼sub-micrometer-thick implantation region. The implantation energy and dosages in this work were 200 KeV, 1014, 5 × 1014, and 1015 ions/cm2, respectively. The average values of real (n) and imaginary (κ) parts of refractive indices of an as-implanted sample in the depth range of 0–800 nm are 5.8 and 0.7, respectively, at 0.5 THz and are 6.2 and 0.2, respectively, at 1 THz. On the other hand, the refractive index profile of the post-annealed samples displays a prominent Gaussian-like form, and peak refractive indices (n ∼ 25 and κ ∼ 32.7 at 0.5 THz and n, κ ∼17 at 1 THz) were found to be at the depth of 210 nm. Reconstructed dopant profiles in as-implanted, implanted, and post-annealed substrates were found to be in good agreement with measurements by secondary ion mass spectroscopy as well as simulation by the Monte Carlo method. We were also able to determine accurately the projected range (Rp), straggle (Rs), and concentration of dopants by the analysis of THz-TDS data. The spatial resolution, along the depth direction, of the THz-TDS technique for depth profiling of dopants was estimated to be as small as 8-nm. We have studied THz heterodyne detection in sub-micrometer MgB2 hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers based on superconducting MgB2 films of ∼ 5 nm (HEB-A), corresponding to a critical temperature (Tc) of 33.9 K, and ∼ 7 nm (HEB-B), corresponding to a T c of 38.4 K. We have measured a double sideband (DSB) receiver noise temperature of 2590 K for HEB-A and 2160 K for HEB-B at 1.6 THz and 5 K. By correcting for optical losses, both HEBs show receiver noise temperatures of ∼1600 K referenced to the front of anti-reflection (AR)-coated Si lenses. An intermediate frequency (IF) noise bandwidth of 11 GHz has been measured for both devices. The required local oscillator (LO) power is about 13 μW for both HEBs. We have also measured a DSB receiver noise temperature of 3290 K at 2.5 THz and 5 K but with an AR-coated lens optimized for 1.6 THz. Besides, we have observed a step-like structure in current voltage (IV) curves, which becomes weaker when the LO power increases and observable only in their differential resistance. Such a correlated structure appears also in the receiver output power as a function of voltage, which is likely due to electronic inhomogeneities intrinsic to the variations in the thickness of the MgB2 films. Different behavior in the IV curves around the low bias voltages, pumped with the same LO power at 1.6 and 5.3 THz, was observed for HEB-B, suggesting the presence of a high-energy σ-gap in the MgB2 film.
