1. Dynamics and Sociality of Synchronized Arousal between Dancer and Audience in Breakdance Battle Scenes

Abstract

This study investigated heart rate synchronization (synchronized arousal) between performers and audience in a real-life dance battle. Although similar phenomena have been observed in some rituals, no studies have been conducted on art performances, such as dance and music. We organized a dance battle and measured the heart rate of both the dancers and the audience during the actual performance. The degree of heart rate synchronization was calculated using cross-recurrence plot/cross-recurrence quantification analysis. The results show that 1) heart rate synchronization between the dancers and audience does occur in dance battles, 2) the degree of heart rate synchronization varies depending on the social relationship between the dancers and audience, and 3) the degree of heart rate synchronization dynamically changes as the performance progresses. These findings suggest that embodied, physiological, and social aspects are involved in the process of performance sharing and appreciation.

Abstract

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common in sports involving jumping and rapid direction changes, often occurring in non-contact situations. The risk of ACL injury is evaluated by knee flexion and valgus angles; a small knee flexion angle combined with a large valgus angle increases the risk. Monitoring these angles during activities can help athletes recognize their ACL injury risk and adjust their movements. Traditional 3D motion analysis, used for measuring knee angles, is costly and impractical for daily practice. This study proposes a knee supporter with stretch sensors to estimate knee flexion and valgus angles in practice settings, evaluating ACL injury risk and notifying athletes of high-risk movements. The proposed device wirelessly transmits data from three stretch sensors placed on the device to a PC and uses machine learning to estimate the knee angles. The results of the evaluation experiments, conducted with data from five healthy male and female participants in their twenties, indicate that the estimation accuracy for the knee flexion angle, achieved by a model trained using a Random Forest Regressor (RFR) with data from individuals other than the target user, resulted in a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 8.86 degrees. Abstract

Storytelling is one of the most important learning activities for children since reading aloud from a picture book stimulates children's curiosity, emotional development, and imagination. For effective education, the procedures for storytelling activities need to be improved according to the children's level of curiosity. However, young children are not able to complete questionnaires, making it difficult to analyze their level of interest. This paper proposes a method to estimate children's curiosity in picture book reading activities at five levels by recognizing children's behavior using acceleration and angular velocity sensors placed on their heads. We investigated the relationship between children's behaviors and their levels of curiosity, listed all observed behaviors, and clarified the behavior for estimating curiosity. Furthermore, we conducted experiments using motion sensors to estimate these behaviors and confirmed that the accuracy of estimating curiosity from sensor data is approximately 72%. Abstract

Kumite is a karate sparring competition in which two players face off and perform offensive and defensive techniques. Depending on the players, there may be preliminary actions (hereinafter referred to as "pre-actions"), such as pulling the arms or legs, lowering the shoulders, etc., just before a technique is performed. Since the presence of a pre-action allows the opponent to know the timing of the technique, it is important to reduce pre-actions in order to improve the kumite. However, it is difficult for beginners and intermediate players to accurately identify their pre-actions and to improve them through practice. Therefore, this study aims to construct a practice support system that enables beginners and intermediate players to understand their pre-actions. In this paper, we focus on the forefist punch, one of kumite's punching techniques. We propose a method to estimate the presence or absence of a pre-action based on the similarity between the acceleration data of an arbitrary forefist punch and a previously prepared dataset consisting of acceleration data of the forefist punch without a pre-action. We found that the proposed method can estimate the presence or absence of a pre-action in an arbitrary forefist punch with an accuracy of 86%. We also developed KARATECH as a system to support the practice of reducing pre-actions using the proposed method. KARATECH shows the presence or absence of pre-actions through videos and graphs. Abstract

In virtual reality (VR) tourism, when watching a video of a tourist location, the feeling of presence improves the experience. Furthermore, it is desirable to be able to give a feeling of having been there before to the users visiting the site afterward. In this study, we aimed to reveal the factors that provide these feelings. We hypothesized that one of the factors is the perception of self-motion. Therefore, we proposed a method wherein the users were induced to turn their heads to the left and right when watching the video of a tourist site via a VR head-mounted display. We conducted two experiments and found that the proposed method conveyed the greatest sense of presence. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in giving the feeling of having been there between the proposed method and watching the video of the site on a PC
