2. Evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions from HOG manure application in a Canadian cow-calf production system using whole-farm models

Abstract

The development of beneficial management practices is a key strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from animal agriculture. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of time and amount of hog manure application on farm productivity and GHG emissions from a cow-calf production system using two whole-farm models. Detailed model inputs (climate, soil and manure properties, farm operation data) were collected from a 3-year field study that evaluated the following three treatments: no application of hog manure on grassland (baseline); a single application of hog manure on grassland in spring (single); and two applications of hog manure as fall and spring (split). All three treatments were simulated in a representative cow-calf production system at the farm-gate using the following whole-farm models: a Coupled Components Model (CCM) that used existing farm component models and the Integrated Farm System Model (IFSM). Annual GHG intensities for the baseline scenario were 17.7 kg CO2-eq/kg liveweight for CCM and 18.1 kg CO2-eq/kg liveweight for IFSM. Of the total farm GHG emissions, 73-77% were from enteric methane production. The application of hog manure on grassland showed a mean emission increase of 7.8 and 8.4 kg CO2-eq/kg liveweight above the baseline for the single and split scenarios, respectively. For the manured scenarios, farm GHG emissions were mainly from enteric methane (47-54%) and soil nitrous oxide (33-41%). Emission estimates from the different GHG sources in the farm varied between models for the single and split application scenarios. Although farm productivity was 3-4% higher in the split than in single application (0.14 t liveweight/ha), the environmental advantage of applying manure in a single or split application was not consistent between models for farm emission intensity. Further component and whole-farm assessments are required to fully understand the impact of timing and the amount of livestock manure application on GHG emissions from beef production systems.

4. Nitrous oxide emissions from a clay soil receiving granular urea formulations and dairy manure

Abstract

Soil N2O emissions vary with N source. A study was undertaken on a clay soil in the Red River Valley, Manitoba, Canada, to determine the effect of granular N fertilizers and dairy manure on N2O emissions from a field cropped to rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) in 2009 and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in 2010. Treatments included an unamended control, granular urea, controlled-release urea (ESN), stabilized urea (SuperU), and solid dairy manure added at rates to achieve a total of 140 kg available N ha-1 (product plus soil N test). The N fertilizers were broadcast and shallowly incorporated each spring before planting; the manure was broadcast incorporated the previous fall. Nitrous oxide emissions were monitored from planting to freeze in fall and during spring thaw in 2011 using static-vented chambers. In both years, N2O emissions occurred within 4 to 5 wk of planting but not in fall after manure application. Area-scale cumulative N2O emissions (∑N2O, kg N ha-1) from planting to freeze were control < ESN = manure < urea = SuperU. Nitrous oxide emission factors were 0.017 kg N2O-N kg-1 available N added for urea and SuperU and 0.007 kg N2O-N kg-1 available N for ESN. Seventy-eight percent of the variation in ∑N2O could be explained by NO3- intensity, an integration of soil NO3- concentrations during the study periods. Greater ∑N2O were also associated with higher yields. These findings suggest that N release rates, as indicated by NO3- intensity and yield, determined N2O emissions. Abstract

Background The aims of this study were: to investigate the capacity of the rare disease healthcare network in Campania to diagnose patients with rare diseases during the outbreak of Covid-19; and to shed light on problematic diagnoses during this period. Methods To describe the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the diagnosis of patients with rare diseases, a retrospective analysis of the Campania Region Rare Disease Registry was performed. A tailored questionnaire was sent to rare disease experts to investigate major issues during the emergency period. Results Prevalence of new diagnoses of rare disease in March and April 2020 was significantly lower than in 2019 (117 versus 317, P Conclusions This study describes the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak on the diagnosis of rare disease in a single Italian region and investigates potential issues of diagnosis and management during this period.

6. A gap in nitrous oxide emission reporting complicates long-term climate mitigation

Abstract

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an important greenhouse gas (GHG) that also contributes to depletion of ozone in the stratosphere. Agricultural soils account for about 60% of anthropogenic N2O emissions. Most national GHG reporting to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change assumes nitrogen (N) additions drive emissions during the growing season, but soil freezing and thawing during spring is also an important driver in cold climates. We show that both atmospheric inversions and newly implemented bottom-up modeling approaches exhibit large N2O pulses in the northcentral region of the United States during early spring and this increases annual N2O emissions from croplands and grasslands reported in the national GHG inventory by 6 to 16%. Considering this, emission accounting in cold climate regions is very likely underestimated in most national reporting frameworks. Current commitments related to the Paris Agreement and COP26 emphasize reductions of carbon compounds. Assuming these targets are met, the importance of accurately accounting and mitigating N2O increases once CO2 and CH4 are phased out. Hence, the N2O emission underestimate introduces additional risks into meeting long-term climate goals.

Abstract

The management of tandem extracranial internal carotid artery and intracranial large vessel occlusion during endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has been under-investigated. We sought to investigate outcomes of AIS patients with tandem occlusion (TO) treated with carotid artery stenting (CAS) compared to those not treated with CAS (no-CAS) during EVT.We performed a cohort study using data from AIS patients enrolled in the Italian Registry of Endovascular Treatment in Acute Stroke. Outcomes were 3 months' mortality, functional outcome, complete and successful recanalization, any intracranial hemorrhage, parenchymal hematoma and symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage.Among 466 AIS patients with TO, CAS patients were 122 and no-CAS patients were 226 (118 excluded). After adjustment for unbalanced variables, CAS was associated with a lower rate of 3 months' mortality (OR 0.407, 95% CI 0.171-0.969, p = 0.042). After adjustment for pre-defined variables, CAS was associated with a lower rate of 3 months' mortality (aOR 0.430, 95% CI 0.187-0.989, p = 0.047) and a higher rate of complete recanalization (aOR 1.986, 95% CI 1.121-3.518, p = 0.019), successful recanalization (aOR 2.433, 95% CI 1.263-4.686, p = 0.008) and parenchymal hematoma (aOR 2.876, 95% CI 1.173-7.050, p = 0.021). CAS was associated with lower 3 months mortality (OR 0.373, 95% CI 0.141-0.982, p = 0.046) and higher rates of successful recanalization (OR 2.082, 95% CI 1.099-3.942, p = 0.024) after adjustment for variables associated with 3 months' mortality and successful recanalization, respectively.Among AIS patients with TO, CAS during EVT was associated with a higher rate of successful reperfusion and a lower rate of 3 months' mortality.

21. Provenance and dispersion of heavy minerals in the beach sand of the Apulia coast

Abstract

A peculiar aspect of Apulia beaches sand is the occurrence of important amounts of heavy silicate minerals (mainly pyroxenes, garnets and amphiboles), forming thin, dark layers and placers interbedded with the dominant light carbonaticlastic fraction. A granulometric, compositional and microanalytical study was carried out on the sand of the beaches stretched along the Gulf of Manfredonia to the Otranto promontory, in order to detail provenance and dispersion of the heavy silicate sandy fraction. The rocks outcropping along the Apulia coast are mainly represented by the limestones of the Mesozoic platform of the foreland domain and by the Plio- Pleistocenic sedimentary covers. The origin of the silicate minerals cannot therefore be found in the rocks outcropping in the area, but must be related to a more distant source. The Ofanto river, whose mouth is in the Gulf of Manfredonia, is the main stream feeding the Apulia coast with sediments eroded by the southern Apennines units and the Mt. Vulture volcano. The microanalitical study revealed that the composition of the pyroxene, melanite garnets and Mg-hastingsite amphiboles is identical to that of the same minerals found in the sediments along the Ofanto river and occurring inside the volcanic bedrock of Mt. Vulture. A minor population of colorless grains of garnets can be probably related to the recycling processes from the Oligo-Miocene sandstones of Southern Apennine terrains. Heavy detrital minerals shed by Vulture edifice source rocks have been found in the sandy fraction dispersed along both northward and southward of the Ofanto mouth. This is in accordance with main longshore current depositing them in the Gulf of Manfredonia. Part of the sands, however, is transported southward by the littoral currents of the Adriatic Sea. The sandy heavy minerals fraction in the is not constant along the coastline. The highest contents are in the northern sector, from the Gulf of Manfredonia to Trani, while they almost disappear in the central sector between Molfetta (BA) and Torre Canne (BR). South of Posticeddu (BR) the amount of heavy minerals increases again, though being always subordinate to the carbonaticlastic fraction. These variations are correlated to the coast physiography: the northern and southern sectors are characterized by a larger platform with a wide surf zone and low energy of the waves, while in the central sector a narrower platform is responsible of a higher energy environment, preventing the deposition of the heavy fraction. A coarser grain size also characterizes the beaches of this sector. At a smaller scale, local variations in the heavy minerals abundances are also related to erosional processes due to anthropic factors: an example is the harbor of Margherita di Savoia (BT), which eastern pier obstacles the northward transport of the Ofanto sediments. The beach southward of the pier has relatively low heavy mineral percentages, while northward the carbonate erosion indirectly causes an enrichment in this component.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory activity of key enzymes linked to type 2 diabetes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase) and the antioxidant properties of non polar (n-hexane) extracts from Coffea arabica, Citrus lanatus, Cucumis melo, Cuminum cyminum, Cocos nucifera, Coriandrum sativum, Foeniculum vulgare, Nigella sativa, Rhus coriaria, Pimpinella anisum, Syzygium aromaticum and Sesamum indicum collected in Lebanon. Extracts were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antioxidant activity was investigated by using different in vitro methods namely 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Ferric Reducing Ability Power (FRAP) and β-carotene bleaching tests. C. melo showed the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 25.55 μg/ml, followed by C. lanatus white seeds and S. indicum (IC50 of 34.41 and 38.78 μg/ml, respectively). S. indicum exhibited also the highest protection of lipid peroxidation with IC50 values of 0.07 and 0.06 mg/ml after 30 and 60 min of incubation, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Six Citrus petitgrain oils, namely C. × sinensis (L.) Osbeck., C. × limon (L.) Osbeck., C. × clementina Hort., C. × aurantium L., C. reticulata Blanco and C. × bergamia Risso & Poit. (P1-P6), were characterized by means of gas chromatography equipped with flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and evaluated for their food functional-related properties. Antioxidant and radical-scavenging properties were tested by means of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, β-carotene bleaching test and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assays. The synergistic interactions on antioxidant efficacy of petitgrain oils in combination were studied. The Relative Antioxidant Capacity Index (RACI) was applied from the perspective of statistics by integrating the antioxidant capacity data determined by all used methods. A high content of monoterpenes and a less representative content of sesquiterpenes characterized Citrus petitgrain oils. In the DPPH assay, C. × aurantium showed major effectiveness with an IC50 value of 27.2 μg/ml. Citrus petitgrains oils, a rich source of healthy phytochemicals, should be considered a by-product of interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As part of our research program assessing the use of liquid hog manure (LHM) to control root-lesion nematodes, Pratylenchus penetrans, a series of acute toxicity tests was conducted to: (i) examine if non-ionized forms of volatile fatty acids (VFA) are responsible for the mortality of P. penetrans exposed to LHM under acidic conditions, (ii) determine if Caenorhabditis elegans can be a surrogate for P. penetrans in screening tests by comparing their sensitivities to VFA, (iii) characterize the nematicidal effect of individual VFA in LHM to P. penetrans, and (iv) determine whether individual VFA in LHM interact in their toxicity to P. penetrans. LHM was significantly (P/= 0.05) more toxic to P. penetrans than a mixture of its main VFA components at concentrations of 5% and 10% (vol. VFA or LHM /vol. in buffer). Pratylenchus penetrans was more sensitive to acetic acid than C. elegans, whereas the sensitivity of both nematode species to n-caproic acid was similar. Individual VFA vary in their lethality to P. penetrans. n-valeric acid was the most toxic (LC(95)= 6.8 mM), while isobutyric acid was the least toxic (LC(95) = 45.7 mM). Individual VFA did not interact in their toxicity to P. penetrans, and their effects were considered additive. VFA account for the majority of the lethal effect of LHM to P. penetrans under acidic conditions. Caenorhabditis elegans cannot be used as a surrogate to P. penetrans in toxicity studies using VFA. The efficacy of LHM to control P. penetrans can be evaluated by assessing its VFA content prior to application, and this evaluation is facilitated by the fact that the interaction of individual VFA appears to be simply additive.

Abstract

The Glenlea long-term rotation study, located near Winnipeg, is Canada’s oldest conventional vs organic crop comparison study. Since 1992, three farming systems (grain only; grain with green manure crops; combined grain-forage rotation) were evaluated under two management systems (organic and conventional). Organic system ranked higher than conventional systems in energy efficiency and biodiversity while conventional system ranked higher in yield, weed management and soil nutrient status. However, significant farming system by management interactions were observed for many variables. The basis for these interactions was enhanced performance of organic production in the combined grain-forage system compared with the grain only system. Organic crop production is sustainable provided combined grain-forage rotations and livestock manure recycling are used.

Abstract

Invasive exotic species threaten the biodiversity and function of native ecosystems. Existing models, attempting to predict and control successful invaders, often emphasize isolated stages of in their life history and fail to formalize interactions between exotic species and recipient environments. In order to elucidate key mechanisms in the success of select invaders, I investigated the role of dispersal, establishment, proliferation, and persistence in their threat to natural areas. Focusing on Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, Canada, I integrated the native climatic range and biological traits of 251 exotic vascular plants reported inside and outside the park. Based on their climatic range in Europe, 155 among 174 exotic plant species absent from the Park were predicted to establish within its boundaries; among these, 40 clonal perennials were considered the highest threat to the Park’s biodiversity. Focusing on smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.), a Eurasian perennial, threatening the structure and function of native prairies throughout the Great Plains, I extended my research to investigate the role of dispersal, establishment, proliferation, and persistence in characterizing its threat to the endemic diversity of northern fescue prairies, protected within Riding Mountain National Park. Patterns of smooth brome invasions were contingent on the type of propagules dispersed. The shallow dispersal gradient of individual florets combined with the steeper gradient of panicles and spikelets suggested that smooth brome is capable of simultaneously invading along dense fronts as well as by establishing isolated foci. While low correlations between the number of dispersed seeds and their recruitment suggested post-dispersal transport, seedling establishment remained contingent on prairie diversity.
