Abstract The Indonesian seas, with their complex passages and vigorous mixing, constitute the only route and are critical in regulating Pacific–Indian Ocean interchange, air–sea interaction, and global climate events. Previous research employing remote sensing and numerical simulations strongly suggested that this mixing is tidally driven and localized in narrow channels and straits, with only a few direct observations to validate it. The current study offers the first comprehensive temporal microstructure observations in the south of Lombok Strait with a radius of 0.05° and centered on 115.54oE and 9.02oS. Fifteen days of tidal mixing observations measured potential temperature and density, salinity, and turbulent energy dissipation rate. The results revealed significant mixing and verified the remotely sensed technique. The south Lombok temporal and depth averaged of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate, and the diapycnal diffusivity from 20 to 250 m are $$\varepsilon$$ ε = 4.15 ± 15.9) × 10–6 W kg–1 and $$K\rho$$ K ρ = (1.44 ± 10.7) × 10–2 m2s–1, respectively. This $$K\rho$$ K ρ is up to 104 times larger than the Banda Sea [ $$K\rho$$ K ρ = (9.2 ± 0.55) × 10–6 m2s–1] (Alford et al. Geophys Res Lett 26:2741–2744, 1999) or the “open ocean” $$K\rho$$ K ρ = 0.03 × 10–4 m2s−1 within 2° of the equator to (0.4–0.5) × 10–4 m2s−1 at 50°–70° (Kunze et al. J Phys Oceanogr 36:1553–1576, 2006). Therefore, nonlinear interactions between internal tides, tidally induced mixing, and ITF plays a critical role regulating water mass transformation and have strong implications to longer-term variations and change of Pacific–Indian Ocean water circulation and climate.

Abstract Fully targeted mRNA therapeutics necessitate simultaneous organ-specific accumulation and effective translation. Despite some progress, delivery systems are still unable to fully achieve this. Here, we reformulate lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) through adjustments in lipid material structures and compositions to systematically achieve the pulmonary and hepatic (respectively) targeted mRNA distribution and expression. A combinatorial library of degradable-core based ionizable cationic lipids is designed, following by optimisation of LNP compositions. Contrary to current LNP paradigms, our findings demonstrate that cholesterol and phospholipid are dispensable for LNP functionality. Specifically, cholesterol-removal addresses the persistent challenge of preventing nanoparticle accumulation in hepatic tissues. By modulating and simplifying intrinsic LNP components, concurrent mRNA accumulation and translation is achieved in the lung and liver, respectively. This targeting strategy is applicable to existing LNP systems with potential to expand the progress of precise mRNA therapy for diverse diseases.

Abstract In the nearshore area, ocean current display intricate complexities due to interactions among tide, river, and coastline, which makes accurate current modeling challenging. Continuous in situ observation with high spatial and temporal resolution helps to better understand the dynamics of these currents. In this study, we used a 10‐km long submarine fiber‐optic cable with distributed acoustic sensing technology to record seismic signals associated with ocean waves. The current velocity and water depth were obtained from the velocity dispersion using frequency‐wave number analysis matched against theoretical ocean wave propagation equations. The results show remarkable agreement with observation of a nearby current meter, confirming the dominance of tidal currents as well as a small‐scale residual current. The temporal variation of water depth is consistent with observation by a nearby tidal gauge. This study demonstrates the potential of using submarine fiber‐optic cable for long‐term, high‐resolution, near real‐time nearshore current monitoring.

This paper experimentally investigates the compressive and flexural strengths of cement-based grouting materials used in grouted sleeve connections at both room temperature and after exposure to high temperatures. The tests were conducted at three different temperatures (200°C, 400°C, and 600°C) using two cooling methods (natural-cooled and water-cooled), and various durations of constant temperature and dwell times after high-temperature exposure were considered. The mechanical properties of the grout after high temperature were comparatively analyzed, and the changes in the microstructure were observed and analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. The experimental results demonstrate a linear decrease in the dynamic elastic modulus as the temperature rises. Moreover, the sample tested at 200°C exhibits an upward trend in its mechanical properties due to the development of stable phases of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and the additional effects of secondary hydration. However, beyond 400°C, a substantial decomposition of C-S-H occurs, leading to severe internal structural damage and a sharp decline in mechanical performance.Furthermore, the cooling method employed also influences the mechanical properties of the grouting material after exposure to high temperatures. The sample cooled by water displays a slight increase (up to 10%) in the dynamic elastic modulus, attributed to the secondary hydration of surface hydration products, compared to the naturally cooled sample. Nevertheless, the water-cooled sample experiences an uneven temperature distribution caused by the temperature disparity between its interior and exterior, exacerbating internal damage. As a result, their flexural strength and compressive strength exhibited varying degrees of decline, up to 43.9% and 27.9%, respectively, compared to natural-cooled specimens. Microscopic observations revealed that exposure to high temperature induced significant physical and chemical changes in the cement-based grouting materials, which were closely correlated with their macro mechanical properties. Based on the experimental study, a calculation formula for the discount coefficient of flexural and compressive strengths of the cement-based grouting materials after exposure to high temperatures was established through data analysis. The computational results demonstrated good agreement with the experimental findings. Finally this study provides reliable and valuable test data for investigating the bonding properties between reinforcement and grouting materials in grouted sleeve connections.

Abstract Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) are found to control the maximum temperature and the accompanying thermal gradients effectively. However, SCMs also lead to low early age strength development. Thus, it is crucial to understand the cracking behaviour of SCMs-based concrete affected by the mix design parameters. In this paper, the thermal cracking resistance was evaluated using a rigid cracking frame (RCF) with a computer-controlled temperature profile. The temperature profile was determined using the software ConcreteWorks by assuming the centre point of the mass concrete. The free shrinkage frame (FSF) and match-curing oven follow the same temperature profile as RCF to measure the free total deformation and time-dependent mechanical properties of concrete, respectively. An analytical model was proposed to calculate the autogenous shrinkage and the thermal stress separately. A time-dependent cracking risk coefficient allowing to estimate the risk of early age cracking of concrete was also proposed.

The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is significantly modulated by Indo-Pacific climate forcing, especially the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). However, when ENSO and IOD occur concurrently, they tend to play different roles in the ITF volume transport. By employing an improved Constructed Circulation Analogue (CCA) method, the relative contributions of these climate events to the ITF inflow and outflow transport in the upper and lower layers were quantified. The results indicate that during co-occurring El Niño and positive IOD events, ENSO is the dominant influence, with ratio values of 5.5:1 (3.5:1) in the upper layer and 1.7:1 (1.6:1) in the lower layer of the inflow (outflow). Conversely, during co-occurring La Niña and negative IOD events, the IOD predominates, with ratio values of 1:6 (1:6.5) in the upper layer and 1:4 (1:3) in the lower layer of the inflow (outflow). The mechanisms underlying these variations in the upper and lower layers can be explained by the differences in sea level anomaly (SLA) and wave propagation, respectively. This study provides a new insight into distinct roles of climate forcing on the ITF volume transport during the simultaneous occurrence of multiple climate modes.

Gene-editing technology, specifically the CRISPR-Cas13a system, has shown promise in breeding plants resistant to RNA viruses. This system targets RNA and, theoretically, can also combat RNA-based viroids. To test this, the CRISPR-Cas13a system was introduced into tomato plants via transient expression and into Nicotiana benthamiana through transgenic methods, using CRISPR RNAs (crRNAs) targeting the conserved regions of both sense and antisense genomes of potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTVd). In tomato plants, the expression of CRISPR-Cas13a and crRNAs substantially reduced PSTVd accumulation and alleviated disease symptoms. In transgenic N. benthamiana plants, the PSTVd levels were lower as compared to wild-type plants. Several effective crRNAs targeting the PSTVd genomic RNA were also identified. These results demonstrate that the CRISPR-Cas13a system can effectively target and combat viroid RNAs, despite their compact structures.

The tobacco whitefly, Bemisia tabaci MEAM1, is a destructive pest that damages plants by sucking plant juice and transmitting viruses. B. tabaci insecticide resistance contributes to population resurgence, and new insecticides are continually needed. Flonicamid and afidopyropen are selective pesticides with high insecticidal activity against piercing–sucking pests and safety to non-target species. We determined the toxicity of flonicamid and afidopyropen to B. tabaci, investigated the sublethal effects on life parameters, and studied physiological responses to them. Flonicamid and afidopyropen were highly toxic to B. tabaci, with LC50 values of 12.795 mg/L (afidopyropen) and 25.359 mg/L (flonicamid) to nymphs and 4.711 mg/L (afidopyropen) and 11.050 mg/L (flonicamid) to adults. Sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC20) reduced the longevity and fecundity of the B. tabaci F0 generation. Transgenerational effects were caused by exposure to sublethal concentrations of flonicamid and afidopyropen. Nymph mortality increased, development was delayed, fecundity decreased, and adult longevity was shortened. Population parameters such as the intrinsic rate of growth (r), net reproductive rate (R0), and finite rate of growth (λ) were significantly decreased compared to the control. The activity of detoxifying enzymes, such as GSTs and P450, were induced by flonicamid and afidopyropen at 72 h, while CarE was inhibited. The expression levels of eleven P450 genes and four GST genes were significantly higher than in the control. In conclusion, flonicamid and afidopyropen have excellent acute toxicity and continuous control effects on B. tabaci. Higher GST and P450 activities and gene expression levels may play important roles in the detoxification metabolic process.

Yougui pills (YGPs) is a classical prescription formula for treating steroid-related osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, its key ingredients and mechanisms of action are still unknown. In the study, we used molecular docking and network pharmacology to comprehensively investigate the mechanism by YGPs impact on SONFH. TCMSP was used to identify the effective active components of YGPs. Targets associated with SONFH were extracted from GEO datasets in conjunction with GeneCards, OMIM, and DisGeNET databases. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks were built using the intersection targets by importing them into the STRING database. Furthermore, DAVID was used to conduct a pathway enrichment analysis for both GO and KEGG. Finally, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulation was performed to verify the binding ability between key targets and active compound. Screening using relevant databases revealed 126 active compounds with 1078 targets in YGPs, mainly including helenalin, quercetin, stigmasterol, sesamin, etc. The topological analysis of the PPI network revealed that key targets included VEGFA, IL6, IL1B, TNF, ALB, and TP53. According to the findings of the GO enrichment analysis, genes were most significantly enriched in the inflammatory response, response to hypoxia, and positive regulation of angiogenesis. The effects of YGPs have been mostly linked to the HIF-1 signaling pathway and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, according to a KEGG pathway enrichment analysis. In addition, the results of molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that the active chemicals in YGPs have high affinity with the relevant targets. This investigation integrates molecular docking and network pharmacology to identify the effective compounds, related targets, and potential mechanism of YGPs in the treatment of SONFH. This research may provide an integrative strategy to clarify the pharmacological mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicines.

Abstract Background Drug-resistant bacterial infections in chronic wounds are a persistent issue, as they are resistant to antibiotics and can cause excessive inflammation due to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). An effective solution would be to not only combat bacterial infections but also scavenge ROS to relieve inflammation at the wound site. Scaffolds with antioxidant properties are attractive for their ability to scavenge ROS, and there is medical demand in developing antioxidant enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials for wound healing. Methods In this study, we fabricated copper-coordination polymer nanoparticles (Cu-CPNs) through a self-assembly process. Furthermore, ε-polylysine (EPL), an antibacterial and cationic polymer, was integrated into the Cu-CPNs structure through a simple one-pot self-assembly process without sacrificing the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-mimicking activity of Cu-CPNs. Results The resulting Cu-CPNs exhibit excellent antioxidant propertiesin mimicking the activity of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase and allowing them to effectively scavenge harmful ROS produced in wound sites. The in vitro experiments showed that the resulting Cu-CPNs@EPL complex have superior antioxidant properties and antibacterial effects. Bacterial metabolic analysis revealed that the complex mainly affects the cell membrane integrity and nucleic acid synthesis that leads to bacterial death. Conclusions The Cu-CPNs@EPL complex has impressive antioxidant properties and antibacterial effects, making it a promising solution for treating drug-resistant bacterial infections in chronic wounds. The complex’s ability to neutralize multiple ROS and reduce ROS-induced inflammation can help relieve inflammation at the wound site. Benzo[α]pyrene (Bap) is recognized as a ubiquitous environmental pollutant among the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) class. Previous studies have shown that the hepatotoxicity of Bap is mainly caused by its metabolites, although it remains unclear whether Bap itself induces such damage. This study integrated metabolomics and chemical proteomics approaches to comprehensively identify the potential target proteins affected by Bap in liver cells. The results from the metabolomics showed that the significant changed metabolites were related with cellular redox homeostasis. CEllular Thermal Shift Assay (CETSA) showed that Bap induced protein thermal displacement of superoxide dismutase 3 (SOD3) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), which are closely related to oxidative homeostasis. Further validation through in vitro CETSA and drug affinity response target stability (DARTS) revealed that Bap directly affected the stability of SOD3 and GPX4 proteins. The binding affinities of Bap to the potential target proteins were further evaluated using molecular docking, while the isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) interaction measurements indicated nanomolar-level Kd values. Importantly, we found that Bap weakened the antioxidant capacity by destroying the activities of SOD3 and GPX4, which provided a new understanding of the mechanism of hepatotoxicity induced by Bap. Moreover, our provided workflow integrating metabolomics and label-free chemical proteomics, can be regarded as a practical way to identify the targets and inter-mechanisms for the various environmental compounds.

Epidemiological and animal studies indicate that pre-existing diabetes increases the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. In the present study, we found that high glucose (HG) levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of diabetic rats might enhance the effect of a subthreshold dose of the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) on the development of motor disorders, and the damage to the nigrostriatal dopaminergic neuronal pathway. In vitro, HG promoted the 6-OHDA-induced apoptosis in PC12 cells differentiated to neurons with nerve growth factor (NGF) (NGF-PC12). Metabolomics showed that HG promoted hyperglycolysis in neurons and impaired tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle) activity, which was closely related to abnormal mitochondrial fusion, thus resulting in mitochondrial loss. Interestingly, HG-induced upregulation of pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) combined with 6-OHDA exposure not only mediated glycolysis but also promoted abnormal mitochondrial fusion by upregulating the expression of MFN2 in NGF-PC12 cells. In addition, we found that PKM2 knockdown rescued the abnormal mitochondrial fusion and cell apoptosis induced by HG+6-OHDA. Furthermore, we found that shikonin (SK), an inhibitor of PKM2, restored the mitochondrial number, promoted TCA cycle activity, reversed hyperglycolysis, enhanced the tolerance of cultured neurons to 6-OHDA, and reduced the risk of PD in diabetic rats. Overall, our results indicate that diabetes promotes hyperglycolysis and abnormal mitochondrial fusion in neurons through the upregulation of PKM2, leading to an increase in the vulnerability of dopaminergic neurons to 6-OHDA. Thus, the inhibition of PKM2 and restoration of mitochondrial metabolic homeostasis/pathways may prevent the occurrence and development of diabetic PD.

A two-channel, time–wavelength interleaved photonic analog-to-digital converter (PADC) system with a sampling rate of 10.4 GSa/s was established, and a concise method for measuring and data correcting the channel sampling timing walk-off of PADCs for signal recovery was proposed. The measurements show that for the two RF signals of f1 = 100 MHz and f2 = 200 MHz, the channel sampling timing walk-off was 12 sampling periods, which results in an ENOB = −0.1051 bits for the 100 MHz directly synthesized signal, while the ENOB improved up to 4.0136 bits using shift synthesis. In addition, the peak limit method (PLM) and normalization processing were introduced to reduce the impacts of signal peak jitter and power inconsistency between two channels, which further improve the ENOB of the 100 MHz signal up to 4.5668 bits. All signals were analyzed and discussed in both time and frequency domains. The 21.1 GHz signal was also collected and converted using the established two-channel PADC system with the data correction method, combining the PLM, normalization, and shift synthesis, showing that the ENOB increased from the initial −0.9181 to 4.1913 bits, which demonstrates that our method can be effectively used for signal recovery in channel-interleaved PADCs.

Sea surface temperature (SST) is an important element in studying the global ocean-atmospheric system, as well as its simulation and projection in climate models. In this study, we evaluate the simulation skill of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models in simulating the climatological SST in the Asian Marginal Seas (AMS), known as the most rapidly warming region over the global ocean. The results show that the spatial patterns and seasonal variability of Asian Marginal Seas (AMS) climatological SST simulated by the CMIP6 models are generally in good agreement with the observations, but there are simulation biases in the values. In boreal winter, the simulated climatological SST tends to be overestimated in the Japan/East Sea and the East China Seas (ECSs) by up to 2°C, while being underestimated in the Sea of Okhotsk by up to 2°C. In boreal summer, the simulated climatological SSTs are overestimated in the Indonesian seas and western Arabian Sea, while being underestimated in the Sea of Okhotsk and the northern ECSs by 1.2–1.5 and 2°C, respectively. Furthermore, we calculate the projected sea surface warming trends in the AMS under different future scenarios in the CMIP6 models. The results show warming trends of 0.8–1.8, 1.7–3.4, and 3.8–6.5°C/century for the Shared Socio-Economic Pathway (SSP) of low- (global radiative forcing of 2.6 W/m² by the year 2100), medium- (global radiative forcing of 4.5 W/m² by 2100) and high-end (8.5 W/m² by 2100) pathways, respectively. In addition, the middle and high latitudes of the AMS are found to have faster warming trends than the low latitudes, with the most rapidly warming occurring in the Sea of Okhotsk, which is around 2 times larger than the global mean SST warming trend. The SST warming trends are relatively slow in the South China Sea and the Indonesian seas, roughly equal to the global mean SST warming trend.

The interannual-decadal variability in the upper-ocean salinity of the southeast Indian Ocean (SEIO) was found to be highly correlated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Based on multisource data, this study revealed that this ENSO-like salinity variability mainly resides in the domain between 13°S-30°S and 100°E-120°E, and at depths above 150 m. This variability is principally driven by meridional geostrophic velocity (MGV), which changes with the zonal pattern of the sea surface height (SSH). Previous studies have reported that the variability in the SSH in the south Indian Ocean is principally driven by local-wind forcing and eastern-boundary forcing. Here the eastern-boundary forcing denotes the influence of SSH anomaly radiated from the western coast of Australia. A recent study emphasized the contribution of local-wind forcing in salinity variability in the SEIO, for its significant role in generation of the zonal dipole pattern of SSH anomaly in the south Indian Ocean, which was considered to be responsible for the anomalous MGV in the SEIO. While our results revealed a latitudinal difference between the domain where the SSH dipole pattern exists (north of 20°S) and the region in which the ENSO-like salinity variability is strongest (20°S-30°S), suggesting that this salinity variability cannot be attributed entirely to the SSH dipole pattern. Our further investigation shows that, the MGV in the SEIO changes with local zonal SSH gradient that principally driven by eastern-boundary forcing. In combination with the strong meridional salinity gradient, the boundary-driven MGV anomalies cause significant meridional salinity advection and eventually give rise to the observed ENSO-like salinity variability. This study revealed the leading role of eastern-boundary forcing in interannual variability of the upper-ocean salinity in the SEIO.

The effects of optical sampling pulse power, RF power, and electronic back-end bandwidth on the performance of time- and wavelength-interleaved photonic analog-to-digital converter (PADC) with eight-channel 41.6 GHz pulses have been experimentally investigated in detail. The effective number of bits (ENOB) and peak-to-peak voltage (Vpp) of converted 10.6 GHz electrical signals were used to characterize the effects. For the 1550.116 nm channel with 5.2 G samples per second, an average pulse power of 0 to −10 dBm input to the photoelectric detector (PD) has been tested. The Vpp increased with increasing pulse power. And the ENOB for pulse power −9~−3 dBm was almost the same and all were greater than four. Meanwhile, the ENOB decreased either when the pulse power was more than −2 dBm due to the saturation of PD or when the pulse power was less than −10 dBm due to the non-ignorable noise relative to the converted weak signal. In addition, RF powers of −10~15 dBm were loaded into the Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM). The Vpp increased with the increase in RF power, and the ENOB also showed an increasing trend. However, higher RF power can saturate the PD and induce greater nonlinearity in MZM, leading to a decrease in ENOB, while lower RF power will convert weak electrical signals with more noise, also resulting in lower ENOB. In addition, the back-end bandwidths of 0.2~8 GHz were studied in the experiments. The Vpp decreased as the back-end bandwidth decreased from 8 to 3 GHz, and remained nearly constant for the bandwidth between the Nyquist bandwidth and the subsampled RF signal frequency. The ENOB was almost the same and all greater than four for a bandwidth from 3 to 8 GHz, and gradually increased up to 6.5 as the back-end bandwidth decreased from the Nyquist bandwidth to 0.25 GHz. A bandwidth slightly larger than the Nyquist bandwidth was recommended for low costs and without compromising performance. In our experiment, the −3 to −5 dBm average pulse power, about 10 dBm RF power, and 3 GHz back-end bandwidth were recommended to accomplish both a high ENOB more than four and large Vpp. Our research provides a solution for selecting optical sampling pulse power, RF power, and electronic back-end bandwidth to achieve low-cost and high-performance PADC.

Abstract Nonstationary internal tides (ITs) are formed from their interactions with background currents. Harmonic analysis (HA), which cannot be used to estimate the incoherent component, is almost exclusively used method to predict ITs from observations. This remains ITs prediction challenge. In this study, we establish a deep learning framework to predict semidiurnal ITs. The model is established and trained with observed semidiurnal internal tidal currents that are 172 days long, and then ITs over the next 42 days are forecasted. The prediction accuracy is greatly improved using the deep learning framework. The magnitudes of errors using the deep learning framework are approximately 35% of those obtained using HA. Most temporal and spatial variations in baroclinic currents can successfully be forecasted using deep learning. In addition, the kinetic energy and incoherent components of ITs can be accurately predicted. Moreover, the relatively high adoptability of the established deep learning model is shown.

Exact knowledge on the seasonal variations of main tidal constituents is beneficial for improving tidal prediction. The semi-annual cycles in K1 and S2 tides are abnormally exaggerated by astronomical P1 and K2 tides, which interferes with our understanding on tidal seasonality. The widely-used tidal inference method in previous studies cannot fully separate astronomical P1 and K2 tides from seasonal P1 and K2 tides due to inaccurate inference relationship. In this study, on the basis of the ‘credo of smoothness’ which indicates that tidal admittances are smooth functions of tidal frequencies, we develop a novel but simple method to address this intractable issue and applied this method to explore the seasonality of tidal currents observed in the deep Timor Passage at the depth of 1800m. We find that the timing and range of seasonal modulations of M2, S2, K1, and O1 tides are distinct. Annual variations in tidal currents are much stronger than semi-annual variations in tidal currents. The annual and semi-annual ranges of M2 tide can reach 2.69 cm/s and 1.51 cm/s, which are largest among main constituents. Although the annual range of K1 tide is only 1.85 cm/s, considering the relatively small amplitude of time-averaged K1 tide (2.87cm/s), K1 the most affected tide by the annual cycle. The seasonal cycles of semi-diurnal tides (M2 and S2) are basically synchronous while those of diurnal tides (K1 and O1) are generally out-of-phase. As a general method, the proposed method can be widely applied to other sea areas to explore local tidal seasonality.

Passive imaging for mid-wave infrared (MWIR) is resistant to atmospheric pollutants, guaranteeing image clarity and accuracy. Arrayed photodetectors can simultaneously perform radiation sensing to improve efficiency. Room temperature van der Waals (vdWs) photodetectors without lattice matching have evolved rapidly with optimized stacking methods, primarily for single-pixel devices. The urgent need to implement arrayed devices aligns with practical demands. Here, we present an 8 by 1 black phosphorus/molybdenum sulfide (BP/MoS2) vdWs photodetector linear array with a fill-factor of ~77%, fabricated using a temperature-assisted sloping transfer method. The flat interface and uniform thickness facilitate carrier transport and minimize pixel nonuniformities, showing an average peak detectivity (D*) of 2.34 × 109 cm·Hz1/2·W-1 in the mid-wave infrared region. Compared to a single pixel, push-broom scanning passive imaging is eight times more efficient and further enhanced through mean filtering and fast Fourier transform filtering for strip noise correction. The Karimata Strait (KS) throughflow between the South China Sea (SCS) and Java Sea plays an essential role in heat and freshwater budget in the SCS and dual roles in strengthening/reducing the primary Indonesian throughflow (ITF) in the Makassar Strait. A sustained long-term monitoring of the ITF is logistically challenging and expensive; therefore, proxies are needed. Here, we use a combination of in situ measurement of the KS throughflow and satellite-derived sea surface height (SSH) and sea surface wind (SSW) to determine the interannual and decadal modulations in seasonal amplitude of the KS throughflow associated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean dipole (IOD), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Linear regression, correlation, harmonic and power spectrum analyses are used. The results manifest that there are significant interannual to decadal modulations in the seasonal amplitude of the KS throughflow. The modulations of the seasonal amplitude in the volume and heat transports range 1.36-1.92 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s-1) and 126.41-173.36 TW (1 TW = 1012 W), respectively, with a significant cycle of ~9 years. From 1994 to 2020, the seasonal amplitude of volume transport through the KS shows an increasing trend of 37.75 ± 15.69 mSv decade-1 (1 mSv = 103 m3 s-1). The seasonal amplitude of the heat transport also increases, at a rate of 4.78 ± 1.52 TW decade-1. The KS volume transport is positively correlated with PDO and ENSO indices (r2 = 0.69 and r2 = 0.58), with a lag of 12 and 10 months, respectively. The results of composite analysis suggest that the interannual variability of the KS transport is related to the interannual anomalies of the SSH gradient and the local SSW fields in boreal winter.

The Japan/East Sea (JES) is known as a mid-latitude “Miniature Ocean” that features multiscale oceanic dynamical processes. Using principal component analysis (PCA), we investigate the variability of the sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (SSC) and its bloom timing in the JES based on satellite remote sensing products spanning 1998–2019. The JES SSC exhibits strong seasonal variability and blooms twice annually. The spring bloom is induced under combined factors of increased photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), weakened wind speeds and sea ice melting, and terminated by the enhanced stratification. The fall bloom is induced by destratification and active dynamic processes (such as upwelling and front), and terminated by decreased PAR. The interannual variability of spring and fall bloom occur along the northwestern coast of the JES and in the deep Japan Basin, respectively. The positive SSC anomalies along the northwestern coast of the JES in spring is associated with more sea ice in the previous winter, weaker wind speed, and stronger stratification induced by the El Niño events. No significant relationship has been found between the fall bloom and the El Niño events. The bloom timing is controlled by the critical depth hypothesis. The initiation/termination timing of spring blooms has shifted earlier by 0.37/0.45 days, and the counterpart of fall blooms has shifted 0.49/1.28 days earlier per year. The duration and magnitude are independent with each other for spring bloom at interannual time scale. In contrast, they are positively correlated for fall bloom, because of both bloom timing and magnitude are dominated by active oceanic dynamical processes in fall.

The lag correlations between the observed sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) in the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean in fall and those in the Pacific cold tongue at the one-year time lag are calculated in running windows of 7–11 years and are shown to have decadal variability. Similar decadal variability has also been identified in the historical simulations of the Community Climate System Model version 4 (CCSM4) that participates in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase-5 (CMIP5). During the positive phases of the decadal variability, the significant lag correlations are diagnosed to be dominated by the oceanic channel dynamics, i.e., upwelling Kelvin waves associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) force enhanced Indonesian Throughflow transport anomalies and western Pacific thermocline anomalies to propagate eastward, resulting in SSTA in the central-eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. During the negative phases of the decadal variability, the subsurface lag correlations suggest that the western Pacific Ocean are still dominated by the oceanic channel dynamics, but do not correlate well with the SSTA in the cold tongue due to a deeper thermocline in the eastern equatorial Pacific. The IOD-ENSO teleconnection is not affected significantly by the anthropogenic forcing during either the positive or the negative decadal phases. The CCSM4 model is found to underestimate Indonesian Throughflow transport variability but overestimate the westerly wind anomalies in the western-central equatorial Pacific, which forces unrealistic anomalies in the equatorial Pacific Ocean associated with the IOD.

Existed studies have suggested a precursory relation between Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and El Niño and the Southern Oscillations (ENSO) with 1-year time lag. The underlying mechanisms were attributed to atmospheric bridge and/or oceanic channel processes. In this study, the oceanic channel dynamics in 23 climate models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) are assessed by correlation analyses in comparison with observations. The results show that the lag correlations between the IOD and ENSO anomalies associated with oceanic channel are significant, suggesting important role of oceanic channel dynamics in the cross-basin teleconnection in the analyzed CMIP5 models, consistent with observational analyses. In comparison, the correlations associated with atmospheric bridge are highly dispersive among the models and generally inconsistent with the observational analyses, suggesting model deficiencies. In a single climate model, the lag correlations associated with oceanic channel dynamics are consistent among different ensemble experiments, whereas those associated with atmospheric bridge processes are dispersive.

Air–sea heat flux is one of the most important factors that affects ocean circulation, weather, and climate. Satellite remote sensing could serve as an important supplement to the sparse in situ observations for heat flux estimations. In this study, we analyze the uncertainty of the turbulent heat fluxes derived from wind speed measured by the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) over the global tropical oceans at different time scales. In terms of spatial distribution, there is large uncertainty (approximately 50 to 85 W·m−2 in the RMSE) near the equator in the western Pacific Ocean, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and near the Gulf of Guinea. The turbulent heat fluxes are in agreement with the buoys in representing the intraseasonal and seasonal variability, but more specific regional validations are needed for revealing the synoptic and sub-synoptic phenomena and the diurnal cycle. The uncertainty of the CYGNSS wind speed contributes approximately 50–57% to the uncertainty of the estimation of turbulent heat fluxes at the frequency band with a typical period of 3–7 days. In addition, the input sea surface temperature, rather than the wind speed, results in differences in the estimation of the monthly mean turbulent heat fluxes in the tropical Atlantic Ocean based on the COARE 3.5 algorithm. In conclusion, although the CYGNSS-derived turbulent heat fluxes are basically in good agreement with the in situ observations, our analysis highlights the importance of considering the limitations of these datasets, particularly in high wind speed conditions and for higher-frequency variations, including at synoptic, sub-synoptic, and diurnal time scales.

Internal solitary waves (ISWs) with features such as large amplitude, short period, and fast speed have great influence on underwater thermohaline structure, nutrient transport, and acoustic signal propagation. The characteristics of ISWs in hotspot areas have been revealed by satellite images combined with mooring observation. However, the ISWs in the Timor Sea, which is located in the outflow of the ITF, have not been studied yet and the characteristics are unrevealed. In this study, by employing the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images taken by the Sentinel-1 satellite from 2017 to 2022, the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of ISWs in the Timor Sea are analyzed. The results show that most of ISWs appear in Bonaparte basin and its vicinity. The average wavelength of the ISWs is 248 m, and most of the wave lengths are less than 400 m. The peak line of ISWs is longer in deeper water. The underwater structures of two typical ISWs are reconstructed based on the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation combined with mooring observation. This shows that, compared with the two-layer model, the continuous layered model is more suitable for reconstructing the underwater structures of ISWs. Further analysis shows that both the rough topography and the spring-neap tides contribute to the generation of ISWs in the Timor Sea. This study fills a gap in knowledge of ISWs in regional seas, such as the Timor Sea.

The accurate estimation of ocean tide loading displacements is essential and necessary for geodesy, oceanic and geophysical studies. It is common knowledge that K1 and K2 tidal constituents estimated from Global Positioning System (GPS) observations are unsatisfactory because their tidal periods are nearly same to the revisit cycle or orbital period of GPS constellation. To date, this troublesome problem is not fully solved. In this paper, we revisit this important issue and develop a novel method based on the unique characteristic of tidal waves to separate GPS-system errors from astronomical K1/K2 tides. The well-known credo of smoothness indicates that tidal admittances of astronomical constituents in a narrow band can be expressed as smooth functions of tidal frequencies, while the interference of GPS-system errors seriously damages the smooth nature of observed tidal admittances. Via quadratic fitting, smooth functions of tidal frequencies for tidal admittances can be determined, thus, astronomical K1 and K2 tides can be interpolated using fitted quadratic functions. Three GPS stations are selected to demonstrate our method because of their typicality in terms of poor estimates of K1/K2 tidal parameters related to GPS-system errors. After removing GPS-systematical contributions based on our method, corrected K1/K2 tides at three GPS stations are much closer to the modeled K1/K2 tides from FES2014, which is one of the most accurate tide models. Furthermore, the proposed method can be easily applied to other areas to correct GPS-system errors because their smooth nature is valid for global tidal signals.

Strawberry mottle virus (SMoV) is associated with strawberry decline disease, causing losses to fruit yield and quality. In this study, using a screening system that enables detection of both local and systemic plant host (RNA silencing) defense responses, we found that Pro2Glu and P28, encoded by SMoV RNA2 genome, functioned to suppress local and systemic RNA silencing triggered by single- but not double-stranded GFP RNA. Subcellular localization assay revealed that both Pro2Glu and P28 were localized to nucleus and cytoplasm. The deletion of 11 amino acid residues at the C-terminus destabilized Pro2Glu protein, and the disruption of two conserved GW motifs deprived Pro2Glu of ability to suppress RNA silencing. Additionally, SMoV Pro2Glu and P28 enhanced the accumulation of potato virus X (PVX) in Nicotiana benthamiana 22 days post-infiltration, and P28 exacerbated significantly the symptoms of PVX. Collectively, these data indicate that the genome of SMoV RNA2 encodes two suppressors of RNA silencing. This is the first identification of a stramovirus suppressor of RNA silencing.

Sea surface salinity (SSS) is a crucial indicator that is used to monitor the hydrological cycle in the ocean system. In this study, we evaluated the simulation skill of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models in reproducing the SSS in the Asian Marginal Seas (AMSs). The results show that the AMSs’ SSS simulated by most CMIP6 models is generally in good agreement with the observations in terms of spatial patterns and seasonal variability. However, these models tend to overestimate the SSS in the Eastern Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal by up to 1.3 psu, while they underestimate the SSS in the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the Southern South China Sea, and the Indonesian Seas, with the bias exceeding −1.5 psu. Additionally, the seasonal variations in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea exhibit large biases with phase shift or reversal in some CMIP6 models. Notably, the observed magnitudes in the AMSs are significantly higher than the global average of 0.2 psu, ranging from 0.22 to 1.19 psu. Furthermore, we calculated the projected trends in sea surface salinity under different future scenarios by using the CMIP6 models. The results reveal relatively larger SSS freshening trends in the second half of the 21st century compared to the first half. Specifically, the freshening trends for the Shared Socio-Economic Pathway (SSP) of low- (global radiative forcing of 2.6 W/m2 by the year 2100), medium- (global radiative forcing of 4.5 W/m2 by 2100), and high-end (8.5 W/m2 by 2100) pathways are 0.05–0.21, 0.12–0.39, and 0.28–0.78 psu/century, respectively. The most rapid freshening trends of SSS are observed in the East China Seas and the Indonesian Seas, which are over two times greater than the global mean. On the other hand, the SSS freshening trends in the Arabian Sea are slightly lower than the global mean SSS freshening trend.

This paper proposed a new method of exposing fibers using expandable polyethylene (EPE) foam to improve the interface performance. The flexural tensile behavior of the interface between precast steam-cured and cast-in-place non-steam-cured ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) members was examined under four-point bending. The improvement effects of four non-destructive interface treatments—e.g., coating with epoxy glue and coating with a cement-based interface agent—were experimentally studied for comparison. The load-deflection curves of the specimens were measured, and the flexural tensile behavior of the interfaces was analyzed, including the failure mode, flexural tensile strength, ductility, fracture energy, and residual strength. The results indicate that the flexural tensile strength of an interface without any treatment is low and that coating with the cement epoxy glue or the cement-based interface agent has a limited effect on improving the flexural tensile strength. As a result of the bridging effect, the exposed steel fibers can transfer the tensile force across the interface. Therefore, exposing fibers using EPE foam can significantly improve the bond behavior of an interface. This enhancement effect depends on the number of exposed steel fibers and can be simulated based on the pullout load–slip relationship of the steel fiber embedded in the UHPC matrix. The proposed numerical model can be used to predict the bond behavior of an interface with the fiber-exposing treatment.

Influenced by local mixing and coastal runoff, water masses in the South China Sea degenerate significantly. The K-means algorithm is used to classify the water masses based on WOD13 temperature and salinity observations from 1966 to 2013 because its principle is consistent with the definition of a shallow water mass. The numbers and initial centers of the water masses are determined using functions of in-cluster distance and density values. The result shows that there are ten water masses in the South China Sea. In combination with the T-S scatter diagram, the properties of the South China Sea water masses were analyzed, including their distribution, the seasonal variability, and the degeneration processes. The temperatures of water masses were higher in summer and lower in winter, with the amplitudes of variation gradually reduced from the surface to the bottom. The seasonal variation in salinity of the surface water masses was high in winter and low in summer, which mainly depends on the amount of river discharge and precipitation. The subsurface water masses were strongly affected by water from the Pacific Ocean; thus, the seasonal variability of these water masses is weak, especially for the intermediate water mass that characterized by prominent low salinity. The water mass formed by the Kuroshio water invading the South China Sea has insignificant seasonal variations in temperature and salinity. The properties and seasonal variabilities of the water masses derived from the K-means algorithm are in agreement with the existing conclusions, suggesting that the improved K-means algorithm is efficient and accurate in the shallow water mass division.

Sea surface salinity (SSS) extremes, characterized as events surpassing a certain threshold percentile, pose a threat to stenohaline organisms worldwide. This study presents the first global mapping of SSS extreme metrics and investigates their underlying drivers using daily reanalysis data. Our key findings have revealed that mesoscale eddies drive SSS extremes over most of the global ocean with peaks in duration ranging from 5 to 10 d and peaks in intensity ranging from 0.2 to 0.3 g kg ^−1 . Freshwater fluxes (FWFs) and mean currents are generally associated with the occurrence of prolonged and intense SSS extremes in tropical and extratropical oceans, respectively. FWFs related to interannual climate modes contribute to the asymmetric distribution of high and low SSS extremes in the central Pacific Ocean and the western Indian Ocean. These results highlight the distinct impacts of different local drivers on the mean states of SSS extremes.

The natural host range for brassica yellows virus (BrYV) is generally limited to Cruciferae. However, we found that BrYV can naturally infect strawberry. The full-length genome sequences of BrYV-MB (accession No. MZ666129) and BrYV-HY (accession No. ON060762) identified in strawberry from Yantai and Beijing, China, were obtained by high-throughput sequencing (HTS) combined with the RT-PCR and RACE techniques. The complete genome sequences of BrYV-MB and BrYV-HY are 5666 nt and contain six open reading frames (ORFs). The two isolates have the highest nucleotide (nt) sequence identity of 99.0%. The infectious cDNA clone of BrYV-HY was constructed through homologous recombination and used to agroinfiltrate Nicotiana benthamiana and Arabidopsis thaliana. The inoculated leaves of N. benthamiana showed necrotic symptoms after 4 days of inoculation (dpi), and the systematic leaves of A. thaliana exhibited purple symptoms at 14 dpi. To develop a rapid and high-sensitive method for the detection of BrYV, a TaqMan real-time fluorescence quantitative RT-PCR method (TaqMan RT-qPCR) was established. Under optimum reaction conditions, the sensitivity of the detection was as low as 100 fg and approximately 100-fold more sensitive than the conventional RT-PCR, so it can be used in large-scale testing.

Some traditional acidic ionic liquids (AILs) have shown great catalytic potential in esterification; meanwhile, the design and application of more new AILs are expected at present.Tropine-based functionalized acidic ionic liquids (FAILs) were synthesized to realize esterification catalysis for the first time; with aspirin synthesis as the template reaction, key influences on the substrate conversion and product yield of the synthesis, such as IL type, ratio of salicylic acid to acetic anhydride, temperature, reaction time and amount of IL, were investigated. The new tropine-based FAILs exhibited excellent performance in catalytic synthesis of aspirin with 88.7% yield and 90.8% selectivity. Multiple recovery and re-usage of N-(3-propanesulfonic acid) tropine is the cation, and p-toluenesulfonic acid is the anion. ([Trps][OTs]) shows satisfactory results. When [Trps][OTs] was used to catalyze different esterification reactions, it also showed good results. The above studies proved that ionic liquid [Trps][OTs] could serve as an ideal green solvent for esterification reaction, which serves as a suitable substitute for current catalysts.

Based on multibeam bathymetric data and high-resolution shallow sub-bottom profiles acquired during China’s 10th Arctic Scientific Expedition Cruise in 2019, a sediment wave field was found on the western slope of the Chukchi Rise, in the Arctic Ocean. This sediment wave field developed on the lower slope with water depths of between 1200 m and 1800 m and stretched 15 km in the downslope direction. It comprised several parallel sediment waves, with wavelengths ranging from 700 m to 3400 m and wave heights from 12 m to 70 m. In the vertical direction, well-stratified deposits, tens of meters thick, were affected by sediment waves, which exhibit asymmetric waveforms and upslope migration trends. The morphological and seismostratigraphic characteristics of the sediment waves suggested their genesis as a result of the interaction between the bottom current and seafloor morphology, which was also supported by hydrographical data adjacent to the sediment wave field. It was infered that this bottom current was related to the Arctic Circumpolar Boundary Current, which many researchers suggest flows through the study area.

Imidazolium-based ionic liquids are wildly used in natural product adsorption and purification. In this work, one typical polymeric ionic liquid (PIL) was synthesized by using L-proline as the anion, which exhibited excellent adsorption capacity toward tea polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The adsorption conditions were optimized with the response surface method (RSM). Under the optimum conditions, the adsorption capacity of the PIL for EGCG can reach as high as 552 mg/g. Dynamics and isothermal research shows that the adsorption process of EGCG by the PIL particularly meets the quasi-second-order kinetic equation and monolayer adsorption mechanism. According to thermodynamic parameter analysis, the adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous. The results of theoretical calculation by molecular docking also demonstrated the interaction mechanisms between EGCG and the ionic liquid. Considering the wide application of imidazolium-based ionic liquids in component adsorption and purification, the present study can not only be extended to other similar experimental mechanism validation, but also be representative for guiding the synthesis of PIL and optimization of adsorption conditions.

Voltage-dependent anion channels (VDACs) are the most abundant proteins in the mitochondrial outer membranes of all eukaryotic cells. They participate in mitochondrial energy metabolism, mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, and cell growth and reproduction. Here, the chromosomal localizations, gene structure, conserved domains, and phylogenetic relationships were analyzed. The amino acid sequences of VDACs were found to be highly conserved. The tissue-specific transcript analysis from transcriptome data and qRT-PCR demonstrated that grapevine VDACs might play an important role in plant growth and development. It was also speculated that VDAC3 might be a regulator of modulated leaf and berry development as the expression patterns during these developmental stages are up-regulated. Further, we screened the role of all grape VDACs’ response to pathogen stress and found that VDAC3 from downy mildew Plasmopara viticola-resistant Chinese wild grapevine species Vitis piasezkii “Liuba-8” had a higher expression than the downy mildew susceptible species Vitis vinifera cv. “Thompson Seedless” after inoculation with P. viticola. Overexpression of VpVDAC3 resulted in increased resistance to pathogens, which was found to prevent VpVDAC3 protein accumulation through protein post-transcriptional regulation. Taken together, these data indicate that VpVDAC3 plays a role in P. viticola defense and provides the evidence with which to understand the mechanism of grape response to pathogen stress.

As a ubiquitous movement in the ocean, tides are vital for marine life and numerous marine activities such as fishing and ocean engineering. Tidal dynamics are complicated in the East Asian marginal seas (EAMS) due to changing complex topography and coastlines related to human activities (e.g., land reclamation and channel deepening) and natural variability (e.g., seasonal variations of ocean stratification and river flow). As an important tool, numerical models are widely used because they can provide basin-scale patterns of tidal dynamics compared to point-based tide gauges. This paper aims to overview the development history of the numerical simulation of tides in the EAMS, including the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, the East/Japan Sea, and the South China Sea, provide comprehensive understanding of tidal dynamics, and address contemporary research challenges. The basic features of major tidal constituents obtained by tidal models are reviewed, and the progress in the inversion of spatially and temporally changing model parameters via the adjoint method are presented. We review numerical research on how a changing ocean environment induces tidal evolution and how tides and tidal mixing influence ocean environment in turn. The generation, propagation, and dissipation of internal tides in the EAMS are also reviewed. Although remarkable progresses in tidal dynamics have been made, nonstationary tidal variations are not fully explained yet, and further efforts are needed. In addition, tidal influences on ocean environment still receive limited attention, which deserves special attention.

Understanding nodal tidal characteristics is essential for accurate long-term tidal prediction. Observational nodal evolution of tides is mainly based on tide gauge records in coastal areas which are limited in time and space, thus impeding coherent determinations of basin-wide patterns of tidal variability. In this paper, we indicate the potential of satellite altimeter data to investigate 18.61-year nodal modulations of main constituents in the Gulf of Tonkin. Three tide gauges and multi-source satellite altimeter observations (TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason1, Jason2, and Jason3) revealed that 18.61-year nodal cycles in tidal amplitudes have noticeable deviations from the equilibrium tidal theory in the Gulf of Tonkin. In general, M2 and N2 nodal modulations are anomalously larger than theoretical values while K2, K1, and O1 nodal modulations are noticeably smaller than theoretical values. Compared to point-based tide gauges, satellite altimeter records can provide basin-wide features of nodal modulations of main constituents. Although overlapping geographical blocks are applied to eliminate the effect of tidal alias originated from long-period sampling intervals, the estimation of nodal cycles of minor constituents are still questionable. Nevertheless, the methods described here provide a strong foundation for future research on time-varying tidal dynamics using the combination of tide gauges and satellite altimeter data.

We report the direct and quantitative measurement of five significant near-inertial waves (NIWs) events observed by Lander at water depths of 600 m to 1100 m at 119°17′ E and 22°06′ N in the northern South China Sea from July to November 2017. We found that these five NIWs events lead to strong shearing, which plays an important role in deep water mixing. Each event corresponds to several different NIWs generation mechanisms. The results show that the NIWs events generated by typhoons were the most regular. This was caused by dispersive NIWs propagation over long periods of time and over long distances. NIWs formed by spontaneous generation do not have this feature. The strongest NIWs events during the observation period were caused by a combination of shelf wave attenuation and monsoon. This time, the signal was transmitted to the seabed, and the upward signal reflected in the meridional direction was found. The reflected signal was anisotropically affected by the seabed topography. A horizontally propagated NIWs event with relatively weak dispersion was also found in this study. Based on the topography, we suspect it was formed by the Lee wave, but we cannot provide any more useful evidence.
