BACKGROUND: In recent years, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been widely used in the field of molecular biology because of its unique advantages. Anthrax is a widespread and long-standing infectious disease, which affects and restricts people’s work and life seriously. OBJECTIVE: The study goal is to develop a new method for the detection of anthrax. METHODS: A rapid, sensitive and accurate method for the detection of anthrax characteristic DNA was proposed by combing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. RESULTS: The linear range of this method is 100–2500 pmol/L and the limit of detection of 16.61 pmol/L. CONCLUSION: The proposed method has numerous advantages, including simplicity of operation, high sensitivity, and specificity, which provides a new idea for the detection of anthrax. Importantly, this methodology has good potential for the detection of other biological substances such as bacteria and viruses by changing the modification sequence on the nanoparticle probe.

A scalable and facile solid-catalyzed growth approach is reported to integrate N-doped carbon tentacles with metal selenide nanoparticles, showing great potential for mass production of non-precious metal catalysts for rechargeable Zn–air batteries.

Lateral furan-expansion of polycyclic aromatics, which enables multiple O-doping and peripheral edge evolution of rylenes, is developed for the first time. Tetrafuranylperylene TPF-4CN and octafuranylquaterrylene OFQ-8CN were prepared as model compounds bearing unique fjord edge topology and helical conformations. Compared to TPF-4CN, the higher congener OFQ-8CN displays a largely red-shifted (~333 nm) and intensified absorption band (λmax = 829 nm) as well as a narrowed electrochemical bandgap (~1.08 eV) due to its pronounced π-delocalization and emerging of open-shell diradicaloid upon the increase of fjord edge length. Moreover, strong circular dichroism signals in a broad range until 900 nm are observed for open-shell chiral OFQ-8CN, owing to the excellent conformational stability of its central bis(tetraoxa[5]helicene) fragments. Our studies provide insights into the relationships between edge topologies and (chir)optoelectronic properties for this novel type of O-doped PAHs.

A series of dicyano-imidazole-based molecules with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties were synthesized to obtain pure blue-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The targeted molecules used dicyano-imidazole with a short-conjugated system as the electron acceptor to strong intermolecular π-π interactions, and provide a relatively shallow energy level of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO). The cyano group was selected to improve imidazole as an electron acceptor due to its prominent electron-transporting characteristics. Four different electron donors, that is, 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (DMAC), 10H-spiro(acridine-9,9'-fluoren) (SPAC), and 9,9-diphenyl-9,10-dihydroacridine (DPAC), were used to alternate the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level to tune the emission color further. The crowded molecular structure in space makes the electron donor and acceptor almost orthogonal, reducing the energy gap (ΔEST ) between the first excited singlet (S1 ) and the triplet (T1 ) states and introducing significant TADF property. The efficiencies of the blue-emissive devices with imM-SPAC and imM-DMAC obtained in this work are the highest among the reported imidazole-based TADF-OLEDs, which are 13.8 % and 13.4 %, respectively. Both of Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates are close to the saturated blue region at (0.17, 0.18) and (0.16, 0.19), respectively. Combining these tailor-made TADF compounds with specific device architectures, electroluminescent (EL) emission from sky-blue to deep-blue could be achieved, proving their great potential in EL applications.

In recent years, small intestine as a key target in the treatment of Inflammatory bowel disease caused by NSAIDs has become a hot topic. Sanguinarine (SA) is one of the main alkaloids in the Macleaya cordata extracts with strong pharmacological activity of anti-tumor, anti-inflammation and anti-oxidant. SA is reported to inhibit acetic acid-induced colitis, but it is unknown whether SA can relieve NSAIDs-induced small intestinal inflammation. Herein, we report that SA effectively reversed the inflammatory lesions induced by indomethacin (Indo) in rat small intestine and IEC-6 cells in culture. Our results showed that SA significantly relieved the symptoms and reversed the inflammatory lesions of Indo as shown in alleviation of inflammation and improvement of colon macroscopic damage index (CMDI) and tissue damage index (TDI) scores. SA decreased the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, MDA and LDH in small intestinal tissues and IEC-6 cells, but increased SOD activity and ZO-1 expression. Mechanistically, SA dose-dependently promoted the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 by decreasing Keap-1 level, but inhibited p65 phosphorylation and nuclear translocation in Indo-treated rat small intestine and IEC-6 cells. Furthermore, in SA treated cells, the colocalization between p-p65 and CBP in the nucleus was decreased, while the colocalization between Nrf2 and CBP was increased, leading to the movement of gene expression in the nucleus to the direction of anti-inflammation and anti-oxidation. Nrf2 silencing blocked the effects of SA. Together our results suggest that SA can significantly prevent intestinal inflammatory lesions induced by Indo in rats and IEC-6 cells through regulation of the Nrf2 pathway and NF-κBp65 pathway.

The turn-off fluorescent photoswitches for information encryption are constantly being developed. However, there are no reports about time-switchable (fluorescence lifetime-switchable) encryption to overcome the limitations of tunable encoding numbers in spectrally and temporally encoded libraries. Based on the double-exponential fitting of fluorescence lifetime, we propose, a fatigue-free and highly flexible switch between the amplitude-weighted average fluorescence lifetime (τm) and the intensity-weighted average fluorescence lifetime (τi), which will realize the supermultiplexed fluorescence lifetime switchable encryption. The potentially enormous library of different fluorescent lifetime combinations would facilitate the development of information security.

Here we report stepwise solution-synthesis of linear nonalternant nanoribbons (NNRs), featuring pentagonal rings peri-fused onto the repeating perylene unit. The X-ray single-crystal structures demonstrated their π-backbones as a twisted ribbon, with the longest crystalline length of the nanoribbon up to 3.9 nm. Asymmetric, multilevel, switchable, and reversible encryption is realized by algorithm encryption, which plays an important role in encryption technology. Fluorescence lifetime encryption is currently not executed by an algorithm. It is well-known that the short fluorescence lifetime (τ1), long fluorescence lifetime (τ2), amplitude-weighted average fluorescence lifetime (τm), and intensity-weighted average fluorescence lifetime (τi) can be obtained using a double exponential fitting, and then these four lifetime parameters can be considered as four lifetime algorithms. Therefore, we propose that the acquisition of these four fluorescence lifetimes can be regarded as further dividing the lifetime by different algorithms and optimizing lifetime multiplexing. Moreover, the four lifetime algorithms of τ1, τm, τ2, and τi can be switched between each other and can be used to perform asymmetric, multilevel, and reversible lifetime encryption to effectively increase the difficulties of anticounterfeiting.

The utilization of solar energy to produce hydrogen from water is showing increased importance and desirability in the field of artificial photosynthesis to produce clean and sustainable fuels. In a typical three-component dye-sensitized semiconductor system for photocatalysis, the dye sensitizer plays an essential role of energy antenna for harvesting visible light and promoting the reduction reaction to generate hydrogen. In recent decades, a lot of attention has focused on metal-free organic sensitizers, which have the advantages of low cost, high molar extinction coefficient, good modifiability and, most importantly, ability to avoid the use of noble metal ions. This Review enumerates the design strategies, specific properties and photocatalytic performances of metal-free sensitizers in the past 30 years and concludes their evolution process. The advantages of different types of metal-free sensitizers are highlighted and the instructively enlightening experiences are systematic summarized.

A porous organic–inorganic hybrid material consisting of calix[4]arene dye C4BTP with pyridine as an acceptor and titanium dioxide, denoted as C4BTP–TiO2, has been prepared by a facile sol–gel method. The C4BTP–TiO2 materials show expandable photocatalytic activities for H2 evolution from water and CO2 reduction to CO when they are loaded with Pt nanoparticles or rhenium complex ReCl(bpy) (CO)3 (ReP) as co-catalysts, respectively. The optimized Pt/C4BTP–TiO2 (5.0 wt%) catalyst exhibits a high H2 production activity (11.99 mmol g−1 h−1 based on catalyst mass) and excellent recyclable durability (a turnover number of 12 981 within 50 h after 10 rounds) under visible-light (λ > 420 nm), presenting one of the best performances among all the heterogeneous photocatalytic systems based on metal-free sensitizers. As a contrast, the surface sensitized catalyst Pt/gel-TiO2/C4BTP only shows far lower activities than hybrid Pt/C4BTP–TiO2 under the same conditions. In addition, the optimized ReP/C4BTP–TiO2 (5.0 wt%) catalyst obtained by loading ReP exhibits a selective photoactivity for CO2 reduction to CO, giving a turnover number of 112 after 25 h of visible-light irradiation. The good photoactivity and durability of the as-prepared hybrid materials can be attributed to the firm Ti–N linkage and efficient electron transfer between metal-free dye C4BTP and the substrate TiO2, while the alkaline-stable Ti–N bond improves the stability of the photocatalysts under basic aqueous conditions. This study offers a good example for the design and preparation of stable organic/inorganic hybrid materials applied in solar energy-solar fuel conversion.

Honey produced from Lespedeza bicolor Turcz. (L. bicolor) is highly valued and relatively rare, leading to adulterated or ersatz substitutes in the marketplace, with no reliable authentication methods available for enforcement of regulations. Here, we characterize the physicochemical parameters (water content, pH, sugar content, amylase activity, and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural content) in L. bicolor honey and palynological characteristics of L. bicolor pollen as reference for assessment of quality and monoflorality. Mass spectrometry with Orthogonal Partial Least Square Discriminant Analysis of chemical constituent data from L. bicolor, chaste, acacia, jujube, and linden honeys, all commonly sold in China, identified kaempferol-3-O-galactoside as a candidate chemical marker of L. bicolor honey. Background Human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lacks effective curative therapy and there is an urgent need to develop a novel molecular-targeted therapy for HCC. Selective tyrosine kinase inhibitors have shown promise in treating cancers including HCC. Tyrosine kinases c-Met and Trks are potential therapeutic targets of HCC and strategies to interrupt c-Met and Trks cross-signaling may result in increased effects on HCC inhibition. Methods The effects of Indo5 on c-Met and Trks activity were determined with in vitro kinase activity assay, cell-based signaling pathway activation, and kinases-driven cell transformation. The in vivo anti-tumor activity was determined with xenograft mice and liver orthotopic mice models. The co-expression of c-Met and TrkB in 180 pairs of HCC and adjacent normal tissues were detected using immunohistochemical staining. Results Indo5, a novel lead compound displayed biochemical potency against both c-Met and Trks with selectivity over 13 human kinases. Indo5 abrogated HGF-induced c-Met signaling activation and BDNF/NGF-induced Trks signal activation, c-Met or TrkB-mediated cell transformation and migration. Furthermore, Indo5 significantly decreased the growth of HCC cells in xenograft mice and improved the survival of mice with liver orthotopic tumors. In addition, co-expression of c-Met and TrkB in HCC patients was a predictor of poor prognosis, and combined inhibition of c-Met and TrkB exerted a synergistic suppressive effect on HCC. Conclusions These findings indicate that Indo5 is associated with marked suppression of c-Met and Trks co-expressing HCC, supporting its clinical development as an antitumor treatment for HCC patients with co-active c-Met and Trks signaling. We present a phosphorescence lifetime imaging (PLIM) based oxygen sensor to monitor the local O2 level in conventional petri dish-based or microfluidic in vitro cell culture. The sensor film is fabricated by dissolving Pt(II) meso-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl) porphine (PtTFPP) into a thermal curable poly(perfluoroether) (PFPE). The lifetime response of the sensor to O2 follows a linear Stern-Volmer relationship. Compared with PDMS as polymer matrix, the use of PFPE as the polymer matrix for PtTFPP mitigates both the dye induced cytotoxicity and the biomolecule adsorption problems of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), while maintaining cell compatibility. By using the sensor film with PFPE as the polymer matrix, the O2 tension during cell proliferation can be monitored in real time, and the resulting value can be used to calculate the per-cell O2 consumption. We tested the application of the sensor for monitoring the O2 tension during long term cell culture of HeLa cells and MDA-MB-231 cells, and calculated the O2 consumption per cell for MDA-MB-231 cells. Our study demonstrates that the PtTFPP/PFPE sensor can be employed as a general noninvasive lifetime imaging platform for studying the di-oxygen in in vitro tissue models at the cellular level as a function of space and time.

A coumarin-based probe, FP2, was designed for the differential detection of fluoride anions and thiols, i.e., the corresponding nucleophilic substitution products from fluorine-containing G agents and sulfur-containing V agents, thus having the potential to discriminate between these two nerve agents. FP2 with two functional reaction groups, α, β-unsaturated ketone and silyl groups, can react selectively with fluoride anions and thiols at the μM level respectively. Intriguingly, in the THF solution, FP2 reacts with the fluoride anion but not with the thiol, whereas in the EtOH/HEPES solution, FP2 reacts with the thiol but not with the fluoride anion. As a result, FP2 can produce different fluorophores in the two detection solutions, thus displaying significant fluorescence changes. In addition, the FP2 detection system can show a significant color change from colorless to yellow within seconds when detecting fluoride anions in THF detection solutions, and from yellow to light blue when detecting thiols in EtOH/HEPES solutions, which will facilitate visual detection by emergency responders at the scene of an incident involving a nerve agent.

We developed a novel treatment strategy for metastatic cancer by synergizing photothermal therapy (PTT), chemotherapy, and immunotherapy through a nanosystem to trigger host antitumor immunity. The nanosystem was constructed by loading mitoxantrone (MTX), a chemotherapeutic agent, and SB-431542 (SB), a transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) inhibitor, onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Intratumoral administration of rGO/MTX/SB, followed by non-invasive irradiation of a near-infrared laser, destroyed local primary tumors and inhibited distant metastases in 4T1 mouse mammary tumor model, which is poorly immunogenic and highly metastatic. After treatment, 70% of the tumor-bearing mice became long-term survivors and developed a tumor type-specific immunity to resist rechallenged tumor cells. We found that rGO-based PTT provided an immunogenic antigen source, forming in situ vaccination with rGO as an immune-adjuvant. The use of SB changed the tumor microenvironment and improved the therapeutic effect of MTX-generated chemotherapy and rGO-based PTT. The immunological functions of MTX, SB, and rGO acted synergistically to induce an effective tumor vaccination, as evidenced by the increased infiltration of tumor-specific cytotoxic CD8(+) T lymphocytes and decreased infiltration of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in distal tumors. Collectively, we demonstrated that rGO/MTX/SB combined with laser irradiation provided a synergistic chemo-immuno-photothermal effect against tumors by in situ vaccination and inhibition of immunosuppressive microenvironment. This unique combination embodies a promising approach to treat metastatic cancers by inducing a systemic antitumor response through a local intervention.

Aim to classify typical hot springs in Guizhou, China and their relevance to health. Assessing geochemical characters of typical hot springs of Guizhou and classifying through hierarchical cluster analysis, an epidemiologic study was conducted to analyze the correlation between hot spring types and health, which showed typical hot springs in Guizhou can be divided into two types, A and B. Type A is rich in fluorine, metasilicic acid, radon components and a large number of essential elements, such as Na, that the human body needs, with trace elements, such as Cr and V, that are essential or possibly essential. Type B is rich in fluorine, metasilicate, strontium components and a large number of essential elements, Ca, Mg, and S, with trace elements, Cu, Mn, Mo, Co, and Ni, that are essential or possibly essential. These hot springs' effects on the health of those bathing in them showed both types were associated with bone and joint diseases. Having bathed in hot springs during the past year was associated with skin symptoms and bone and joint symptoms, and having bathed within the past two weeks was linked to sleep quality and levels of appetite and energy. However, differences do exist between the correlation between the two types and some chronic diseases, with Type A hot springs significantly related to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and diabetes and Type B to hypertension. This classification of Guizhou's hot springs can guide the future development and use of hot spring physiotherapy.

During human erythroid maturation, Hsp70 translocates into the nucleus and protects GATA-1 from caspase-3 cleavage. Failure of Hsp70 to localize to the nucleus was found in Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) erythroblasts and can induce dyserythropoiesis, with arrest of maturation and death of erythroblasts. However, the mechanism of the nuclear trafficking of Hsp70 in erythroblasts remains unknown. Here, we found the hematopoietic transcriptional regulator, EDAG, to be a novel binding partner of Hsp70 that forms a protein complex with Hsp70 and GATA-1 during human normal erythroid differentiation. EDAG overexpression blocked the cytoplasmic translocation of Hsp70 induced by EPO deprivation, inhibited GATA-1 degradation, thereby promoting erythroid maturation in an Hsp70-dependent manner. Furthermore, in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients with dyserythropoiesis, EDAG is dramatically down-regulated, and forced expression of EDAG has been found to restore the localization of Hsp70 in the nucleus and elevate the protein level of GATA-1 to a significant extent. In addition, EDAG rescued the dyserythropoiesis of MDS patients by increasing erythroid differentiation and decreasing cell apoptosis. This study demonstrates the molecular mechanism of Hsp70 nuclear sustaining during erythroid maturation and establishes that EDAG might be a suitable therapeutic target for dyserythropoiesis in MDS patients.

This study sought to use the undesirable concentration-dependent quenching to propose a simple multiplexed imaging analysis for histopathological identification of different stained tissues. To verify this point, the relationship between the fluorescence lifetime and eosin concentration was obtained. At low concentrations, the fluorescence lifetimes of eosin were independent of the concentration ( 100 μg ml−1). To further verify that multiplexed imaging of different tissues could be achieved only by eosin, we used fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) to measure fluorescence lifetimes from hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained sections. Working directly on an average fluorescence lifetime (τm) histogram for lifetime-based separation easily achieved multiplexed imaging in situ. H&E stained erythrocytes, smooth muscles, collagen and artificial structures on a prepared microscopic slide could be identified without the need of alternating laser excitation, using hyperspectral systems and special staining or multi-labeled immunofluorescence. Using only eosin, different types of tissues could be distinguished by eosin concentration-dependent quenching. Hence, eosin fluorescence lifetimes potentially simplify multiplexed imaging and may have potential applications for pathological diagnosis.

In order to better investigate the working life of Smart Meter and discover in advance the possible faults existed in the same batch, the operational data of Smart Meter in running state has to be analyzed so as to construct the prediction model of Smart Meter life. Firstly, we collect all the data from the running smart meters regarding the operational faults, maintenance management, and their application data from the Power Information Collection System; Secondly, we analyze the operational data in running state; Lastly, according to the advantages and disadvantages of the three reliability prediction methods (element stress method, reliability prediction method based on reliability test, and reliability prediction method based on reliability verification), we can protract the model that can reflect the life degradation characteristics and life prediction of smart meter.

Multi-objective search algorithm is a common optimization tool to deal with complex multi-objective problems, such as Multiple Objectives Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) and Non dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) is a new heuristic evolutionary algorithm, which is based on the Newtonian gravity and the laws of motion to search optimal solutions. Some of agents have bigger mass, so other smaller mass agents are affected easily to fall into local optimization. In order to improve the search ability of the algorithm, this paper proposes an Improved Multi-Objective Gravitational Search Algorithm (IMOGSA). The proposed method uses the fast non-dominated sorting strategy and crowding distance of NSGA-II, and uses Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA). Using strategy of NSGA-II is to reduce the complexity of the algorithm, in addition, using SCA is to improve the convergence and distribution of IMOGSA by improving the weight of acceleration. Finally, the proposed method has been compared with other well-known heuristic search methods by using some benchmark functions.

The phasor approach to fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is used to identify different types of tissues from hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stained basal cell carcinoma (BCC) sections. The results suggest that working directly on the phasor space with the clustering assignment achieves immunofluorescence like simultaneous five or six-color imaging by using multiplexed fluorescence lifetimes of HE. The phase approach is of particular effectiveness for enhanced visualization of the abnormal morphology of a suspected nidus. Moreover, the phasor approach to HE FLIM data can determine the actual paths or the infiltrating trajectories of basophils and immune cells associated with the preneoplastic or neoplastic skin lesions. The integration of the phasor approach with routine histology proved its available value for skin cancer prevention and early detection. We therefore believe that the phasor analysis of HE tissue sections is an enhanced visualization tool with the potential to simplify the preparation process of special staining and serve as color contrast aided imaging in clinical pathological examination.

The aim of this study was to distinguish basal cell carcinoma (BCC) from actinic keratosis (AK) and Bowen’s disease (BD) by fluorescence lifetimes of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and phasor analysis. Pseudocolor images of average fluorescence lifetime (τm) exhibited more contrast than conventional bright field and/or fluorescence images of H&E-stained sections. The mean values (μ) of τm distribution (τmμ) in three layers of skin were first explored for comparison with the corresponding layers of AK, BD, and BCC. Moreover, analysis of the H&E fluorescence lifetimes in the phasor space was performed by observing clusters in specific regions of the phasor plot. Various structures in the skin were distinguished. Comparisons of phase distributions from the corresponding layers of skin resulted in quantitative separation and calculation of distinctive parameters including coordinate values, diagonal slopes, and phasor areas. Butyl acrylate grafted starch (St-g-BA) was made by the method of microwave-assisted synthesis, involving the combination of microwave irradiation and a chemical free radical initiator (H₂O 2- Fe 2+ ) to initiate the grafting reaction. The optimal conditions for the graft copolymerization with respect to reaction microwave power, exposure time and type of initiator were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the percent grafting and grafting efficiency were 26.2% and 85.9%, respectively. The grafted starch was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The St-g-BA exhibited good tensile strength, elongation at break and abrasion resistance. Therefore, it is suggested this biomaterial could be used in various industrial applications such as textile sizing and food packaging.

Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) is a solid waste that generated in electrolytic manganese metal production, which would not only contaminate the environment due it contains soluble manganese, but occupy a large amount of farmlands as well. Hence, recovering manganese from EMR using economical method is the key to achieve the targets of resource recycling and solid waste harmless treatment. In this paper, pure water was used to leach soluble manganese out from EMR. Leaching kinetics model of manganese were established and examined, characteristics of EMR before and after leaching were analyzed by XRF, XRD, EPMA-WDS and SEM. The results revealed that the apparent activated energy (E) during the leaching processes was 11.17 ± 2.02 kJ/mol and the slope in fitting line of Arrhenius equation was −1.343, which indicated that the leaching kinetic model was appropriate and the rate determining step was diffusion process, that is, Mn2+ migrate into bulk solution from diffusion layer. The main crystal phases in EMR are quartz (SiO2) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4·nH2O) (n = 0.5 or 2), but the distribution relationship between SiO2 and CaSO4·nH2O was not regular. Mn is in the form of “film” covered in CaSO4 bar in EMR. High temperature and high volume of water could promote Mn2+ transport process. The optimal leaching condition was S:L (Solid : Liquid)1:4, temperature was 24 °C and the agitation rate was 300 r/min when combined the cost and efficiency, and 83.35 % soluble manganese can be leached out from EMR.

Conventional organic dye encoding is limited by photo-bleaching and spectral overlap, thus restricting the number of distinguishable codes that can be used in practice. The utility of a single dye for increasing additional encoding capacity has yet to be explored. To this end, we firstly report a facile, flexible and green sustainable method to maximize the time-resolved encoding capacity of the xanthene red dye, eosin. By simply adjusting the concentration, pH and viscosity of the eosin solution, eleven distinguishable populations of fluorescence lifetimes were obtained with a short lifetime range of 1.0–3.4 ns, which in turn could increase the difficulty of duplication and provide extra high-level security protection. The results provide a facile strategy to increase the temporal multiplexing capacity, and may result in the reuse of existing organic dyes as lifetime-coded polymer microspheres in the fields of information security.

The arteriovenous oxygen content difference disappears after blood is exposed to air. The blood oxygen level-dependent imaging method is unable to differentiate oxygen-saturated arteriovenous bloods, and no other method exists for determining them. To overcome this limitation, we first proposed that the fluorescence lifetime of eosin added to wet whole blood (WB) can distinguish air-exposed wet arterial blood (AB) from venous blood (VB). We then demonstrated that the urea level in wet WB can be employed as an indicator for further confirmation of wet arteriovenous blood based on the change in the eosin lifetime in the urease-urea reaction. Because arterial clots mostly comprise aggregated platelets in dried blood whereas venous clots contain higher amounts of fibrin. The eosin-stained platelets and fibrin have different eosin lifetimes, and this difference between platelets and fibrin during clotting when the blood dries explains why the eosin lifetime can be used to differentiate air-exposed wet and dried blood. Moreover, we found that the eosin short lifetime (τ1), mean lifetime (τm), and lifetime-based scatter parameters can be applied to discriminate dried AB and VB clots. Indeed, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) could be a potential method to support bloodstain pattern analysis in criminal cases.

Herein, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) was used to directly measure eosin fluorescence lifetimes from H&E-stained umbilical artery, and a further utilization of eosin for high-content and multi-target analysis was proposed for the first time. Smooth muscles, collagens, and elastic fibers can be distinguished by eosin fluorescence lifetimes (P < 0.001). Erythrocytes, smooth muscles, elastic fibers, and type I and III collagen from the H&E-stained umbilical artery can be simultaneously identified by multiplexed fluorescence lifetimes of eosin. Use of eosin and lifetime-based separation is a potential method to simplify the special staining for clinicopathologic examination. Multiplexed eosin fluorescence lifetimes may be a newly developed method that can directly determine the relative content of elastic fiber and collagens from the H&E-stained sections. FLIM may have potential applications as an assisted tool in the assessment of the severity and complexity of cardiovascular diseases.

We present our recent work on the applications of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy(FLIM), including the monitoring of macromolecule dynamic changes in the nucleolar compartments and the auxiliary diagnosis of H and E-stained sections. We demonstrated the capability of FLIM to measure protein concentration in the specific cellular compartments in live cells. We proposed to use FLIM to monitor changes in intracellular protein concentration caused by various factors e.g. cell cycle progression, drug treatment etc. In the future, FLIM technology is expected to be combined with super-resolution optical imaging. FLIM with molecular resolution will have the potential to serve as a powerful tool for discovering new phenomena and revealing new mechanisms in biomedical research, which will effectively promote the development of life science.

New supramolecular structures were designed in this work using large-sized polyoxometalates (POMs) and crown-ether-based supramolecular cations selected as building blocks. Two novel supramolecular inorganic–organic hybrids [(3-F-4-MeAnis)([18]crown-6)]2[SMo12O40]•CH3CN (1) and [(4-IAnis)([18]crown-6)]3[PMo12O40]•4CH3CN (2) (3-F-4-MeAnis = 3-fluoro-4-methylanilinium and 4-IAnis = 4-iodoanilinium) were synthesized. Crystals 1 and 2 have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and elemental analysis (EA). Based on X-ray diffraction analysis, Crystals 1 and 2 were constructed through noncovalent bonding interactions and belong to different space groups due to the difference of the building blocks used. Supramolecular cations formed due to strong N–H···O hydrogen bonding interactions between the six oxygen atoms of [18]crown-6 molecules and nitrogen atoms of anilinium derivatives. Crystal 1 has two different supramolecular cations with an anti-paralleled arrangement that forms a dimer through weak hydrogen bonding interactions between adjacent [18]crown-6 molecules. Crystal 2 has three independent supramolecular cations that fill large spaces between the [PMo12O40] polyoxoanions forming a rhombus-shape packing arrangement in the ac plane. Crystals 1 and 2 are unstable at room temperature.

The design of highly efficient drug carriers, and the development of appropriate techniques to monitor their mechanism of action and therapeutic effect, are both critical for improving chemotherapy. Herein, a polymeric nanoparticle, PAH-Cit/DOX (poly(allylamine)-citraconic anhydride/doxorubicin), was synthesized and used as a nanodrug system for the efficient delivery and pH-responsive release of doxorubicin (DOX) into cancer cells. The PAH-Cit/DOX nanoparticles were stable at physiological pH but effectively released DOX under weakly acidic conditions. The release efficiency was 90.6% after 60 h of dialysis in phosphate-buffered saline at pH 5.5. Confocal images showed the rapid movement of the drug from the cytoplasm to the nucleus, indicating the effective drug release MCF-7 cells. Notably, the combination of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) and phasor analysis (phasor-FLIM) provides an approach to monitor the dynamic change of DOX fluorescence lifetime in intercellular environments. Phasor-differentiated lifetime pixel intensity in FLIM images was quantified and used to evaluate the DOX release from nanocarriers, making it possible to detect the dynamics of intracellular release and transport of DOX.

With the rapid development of life sciences, there is an increasing demand for intravital fluorescence imaging of small animals. However, large dimensions and limited working distances of objective lenses in traditional fluorescence microscopes have limited their imaging applications mostly to superficial tissues. To overcome these disadvantages, researchers have developed the graded-index (GRIN) probes with small diameters for imaging internal organs of small animals in a minimally invasive fashion. However, dynamic imaging based on GRIN lens has not been studied extensively. Here, this paper presented a fluorescence endoscopic imaging system based on GRIN lenses using one-photon and two-photon excitation. GRIN lenses with 1.15 mm diameter and 7.65 mm length were used in the system. The images were acquired by a compact laser scanning imaging system with a resonant galvo-mirror system to scan the laser beam and a photomultiplier tube (PMT) to detect fluorescence signals. Experimental results showed that this system using two-photon excitation could implement dynamic fluorescence microendoscopic imaging and monitor the movement of blood flow beneath the skin in anesthetized mice while producing images with higher contrast and signal to noise ratio (SNR) than those using one photon excitation. It would be a useful tool for studying biological processes of small animals or plants in vivo.

This paper analyzes the status quo in China regarding carbon emissions, and discusses challenges facing coal utilization in China. It concludes that the development of clean coal technology is an important means to realize low-carbon emissions in China. Using scenario analysis methodology, this paper presents quantitative analysis of the potential of clean coal technologies for carbon emission reductions in 2015 and 2020. The analysis indicates that high-efficiency combustion in industrial boilers and clean, highly efficient coal-fired power generation should serve as important factors for carbon emission reductions before 2020.

The aaviation kerosene is a practical candidate fuel for scramjet engine in the flight regimes of Mach number less than 8, in considerations of safety, economy and portable. In the present paper, the ignition characteristics of a scramjet combustor model fueled by aviation kerosene was experimentally investigated, using the resistance heating direct-connected supersonic combustion facility of Northwestern Polytechnical University. The inflow conditions at the direct-connected combustor entrance were specified as: the nominal Mach of 2.0, the total temperature of 870～930K and the total pressure of about 770kPa. Three combustor performance of difference ER were compared applied CFD simulated. The experimental result suggested that: the cavity design is a key problem for kerosene successful ignition is the combustor; That chooses appropriate gas-oil ratio could increased performance of combustor and kept isolator interfered by gas.
