Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are a hopeful noble-metal-free catalysts for water splitting. In this study, we used a three-dimensional nanostructure on nickel substrate to easily synthesize a nickel–cobalt phosphide electrocatalyst (NixCoyP, x = 1, 1.5, 2; y = 1, 1.5, 2) through hydrothermal reaction and in situ phosphorylation. The NiCo1.5 P exhibited relatively excellent oxygen evolution activity performance, and it only needed the overpotentials of 123 mV for HER in 1 M KOH to perform the current densities of 10 mA cm−2. It is worth mentioning that the Ni2CoP exhibited better bifunctional electrocatalyst characteristics. As to water splitting, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) require 197 and 253 mV overpotentials separately to provide a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Its relatively excellent electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the high-density sea urchin-like three-dimensional structure, which provides greater specific surface area and more active site. Besides, Ni2CoP also shows long-term durability lasting 80,000 s, and on this basis, there is no distinct deactivation. This work emphasizes that Ni2P and CoP play a vital role relative to the good activity of HER. Moreover, the unique morphology with self-supported structure provides a larger specific surface area, making it possible the exposure of higher amount of active sites for HER. These self-supported electrocatalysts that do not require a binder could also make the electrode more active and stable. This work, therefore, presents a strategy that is controllable and feasible strategy for the synthesis of bimetallic phosphides with unique morphology and high HER and OER activity.

CrFeNiTix (x = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 molar ratio) compositionally complex alloys were fabricated by vacuum arc melting to investigate the microstructure, hardness, and compressive properties. The results revealed that CrFeNiTix alloys consisted of the principal face-centered cubic (FCC) phase and body-centered cubic (BCC) solid solution, with an amount of (Ni, Ti)-rich hexagonal close-packed phase. CrFeNiTix alloys exhibited the typical dendrite. Ti0.2 and Ti0.3 alloys were composed of FCC and BCC solid solutions in the dendrite, as well as e (Ni3Ti) and R (Ni2.67Ti1.33) phases in the inter-dendrite, simultaneously. For Ti0.4, Ti0.5, and Ti0.6 alloys, (Fe, Cr)-rich solid solution separated out and e phase transformed into R phase gradually. Meanwhile, TEM analysis indicated that Ti0.4 alloy matrix consisted of the principal FCC phase containing (Ni, Ti)-rich intragranular nanoprecipitates. The hardness values of CrFeNiTix alloys were increased with the addition of Ti content and the high compressive strength of CrFeNiTix alloys was maintained, which was attributed to the solid solution strengthening and precipitation hardening.

Background Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Major breast cancer surgery especially with axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), is associated with upper limb functional decline. Majority of studies are conducted in Western population and may not be applicable to Asians. This pilot study aims to evaluate whether major breast surgery results in upper limb functional impairment in a cohort of Asian women with breast cancer. Methods This is a prospective cohort study of 41 patients who underwent 44 major breast surgeries from April 2018 to August 2019. Main inclusion criteria were patients over 21 years of age undergoing major breast surgery for breast cancer. Major breast surgery was defined as wide local excision (WLE) or mastectomy. Main exclusion criteria were patients with pre-existing neurological or rheumatological co-morbidities affecting upper limb function or previous trauma with resulting deformities to the upper limbs. Patients underwent early rehabilitation from post-operative day 1. Shoulder flexion and abduction active range of motion (AROM) and QuickDASH disability score were assessed 1 week before surgery, post-operative week 2 and week 6. Baseline demographics and peri-operative data were also collected. Results Median age was 62.5 years. There were 16 (36.4%) wide local excisions and 28 (63.6%) simple mastectomies. Two (4.5%) cases had neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Fifteen (34.1%) cases had ALND. At post-operative week 6, shoulder flexion was comparable to baseline (p = 0.775), while abduction improved from baseline (p = 0.016). However, QuickDASH disability score was significantly worse at post-operative week 6 compared to baseline (median score 2.5 vs 0, p = 0.027). Subgroup analysis of patients with ALND demonstrated significantly worse QuickDASH disability score at post-operative week 6 (p = 0.010) but not for patients with only sentinel lymph node biopsy (p = 0.396). Conclusion This pilot study in an Asian cohort found that patients were able to regain AROM of shoulder after major breast surgery at post-operative week 6 but had a worse QuickDASH disability score, especially in the subgroup with ALND. Aggressive and early rehabilitation should be encouraged. However, a longer follow-up is required to evaluate long term functional outcomes.

The diagnosis and treatment of intussusception is often confusing in infants aged younger than 3 months. This study aimed to discuss the particularity of diagnosis and treatment of intussusception in this age group. From April 1983 to June 2008, 39 infants aged 3 months or younger who had been diagnosed with intussusception were treated and their clinical data were analyzed retrospectively. Of the 39 infants (29 boys and 10 girls), ages ranged from 12 hours to 3 months, with a mean age of 52.6 days. The duration from onset to admission ranged from 7 to 142 hours (mean 39.6 hours). Three infants had intrauterine intussusception and 36 postnatal intussusception. The 3 infants with intrauterine intussusception had typical presentations of complete ileus after birth. Gap type ileal atresia was found in surgery in 2 of the 3 infants and primary anatomosis was performed therapeutically. The other infant was found to have ileal separation and a patent proximal end with diffused meconium peritonitis. The patient died 2 days after primary anastomosis. Most infants with postnatal intussusception had two or more manifestations of the tetralogy, namely intermittent screaming, vomiting, bloody stool, and abdominal mass. In 23 infants who underwent pneumatic reduction, 17 had a successful reduction and 6 converted to open surgery. Surgery was indicated for 19 infants, with maneuver procedure in 14. Meckel’s diverticulum was noted as a leading cause in 2 infants, ileal duplication in 1 with necrosis of intussusceptum, and primary intussusception with lead point necrosis in 2. The 5 infants, on whom segmental resection was performed, underwent primary anastomosis. All infants with postnatal intussusception had a smooth recovery. Infants aged 3 months or younger may suffer from intussusception and most of them present with typical symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment are needed for a good prognosis. Intrauterine intussusception may be an etiological factor for ileal atresia.
