© 2016 The Author(s). Background: Women with type 1 diabetes strive for optimal glycemic control before and during pregnancy to avoid adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes. For most women, optimal glycemic control is challenging to achieve and maintain. The aim of this study is to determine whether the use of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) will improve glycemic control in women with type 1 diabetes who are pregnant or planning pregnancy. 6. Third-Order Methods as Applied to Zonal Aberrations of Single Long Focal Length Lenses

Abstract

The apertures of single long focal length lenses were restricted in various ways to obtain large zonal patterns which could be readily observed and photographed. These zonal patterns were photographed in planes normal to the lens axis at different distances from the lens so that their changes in form with distance from the lens could be seen. Photographs were made for lenses of different designs to show how the design influenced these patterns. The zones of light transmitted by these lenses were either circular or rectangular in shape. Some very interesting geometrical figures can be obtained in this way. The third-order methods of L. Seidel were then used to calculate the forms of these zonal patterns in the paraxial image plane and a comparison made between the calculated and photographed patterns. To calculate the forms of these patterns in planes other than the paraxial image plane, a modification of Finsterwalder’s ray equations was used. The zonal patterns in the paraxial image plane were then projected into other planes normal to the lens axis and displaced from the paraxial image plane. Again a comparison was made between the calculated and photographed patterns. These zonal patterns were also observed with a white light source and were projected on a screen before the meeting of the Society.

Abstract

An airborne spectrometer and tracker system for quantitative spectral measurements of ballistic missile plumes in the wavelength region from 1.0 to 5.0 microns is described. Measurements are made at an altitude of about 40,000 feet. Eight spectra per second are recorded with a wavelength resolution of the order of 0.1 micron. The system NEFD is about 3 x 10 to the minus 10th power and 4 x 10 to the minus 12th power watts/sq. cm with a PbSe and InSb detector respectively. Data are processed on an IBM 7090 computer and a Stromberg Carlson 4020 microfilm plotter. Sample plots of H lambda and H lambda R2 are given. (Author)

Abstract

The extinction coefficient of filtered Potomac River water was measured at the frequency doubled neodymium 'green laser' wavelength of 5300A. Measurements were conducted in situ at the David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) in a cooperative program with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Extinction coefficients of 0.097, 0.104 and 0.119/m were measured on 4, 5 and 8 June 1964, respectively. The increase in attenuation with time is confirmed by filtered arc light measurements made by the NRL and is attributed to contamination of the water after the basin filtration system was turned off. Scattering experiments indicate that the aureole effect for the highly collimated laser beam was small over the 200 meter range of the measurements. (Author)

Abstract

Introduction: Inflammation plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, the leading cause of ischaemic heart disease (IHD). Studies in preclinical models have demonstrated that an increase in regulatory T cells (Tregs), which have a potent immune modulatory action, led to a regression of atherosclerosis. The Low-dose InterLeukin 2 (IL-2) in patients with stable ischaemic heart disease and Acute Coronary Syndromes (LILACS) study, established the safety of low-dose IL-2 and its biological efficacy in IHD. The IVORY trial is designed to assess the effects of low-dose IL-2 on vascular inflammation in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS)., Methods and Analysis: In this study, we hypothesise that low-dose IL-2 will reduce vascular inflammation in patients presenting with ACS. This is a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, phase II clinical trial. Patients will be recruited across two centres, a district general hospital and a tertiary cardiac centre in Cambridge, UK. Sixty patients with ACS (unstable angina, non-ST elevation myocardial infarction or ST elevation myocardial infarction) with high-sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) levels >2 mg/L will be randomised to receive either 1.5×10 6  IU of low-dose IL-2 or placebo (1:1). Dosing will commence within 14 days of admission. Dosing will comprise of an induction and a maintenance phase. 2-Deoxy-2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-D-glucose ( 18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography/CT (PET/CT) scans will be performed before and after dosing. The primary endpoint is the change in mean maximum target to background ratios (TBR max ) in the index vessel between baseline and follow-up scans. Changes in circulating T-cell subsets will be measured as secondary endpoints of the study. The safety and tolerability of extended dosing with low-dose IL-2 in patients with ACS will be evaluated throughout the study., Ethics and Dissemination: The Health Research Authority and Health and Care Research Wales, UK (19/YH/0171), approved the study.
