We present a new approach to femtosecond direct laser writing lithography to pattern nanocavities in ferromagnetic thin films. To demonstrate the concept we irradiated 300~nm thin nickel films by single intense femtosecond laser pulses through the glass substrate and created complex surface landscapes at the nickel-air interface. Using a fluence above the ablation threshold the process is destructive and irradiation leads to the formation of 200~nm thin flakes of nickel around the ablation crater as seen by electron microscopy. By progressively lowering the peak laser fluence, slightly below the ablation threshold the formation of closed spallation cavities is demonstrated by interferometric microscopy. Systematic studies by electron and optical interferometric microscopies enabled us to gain an understanding of the thermo-mechanical mechanism leading to spallation at the solid-molten interface, a conclusion supported by molecular dynamics simulations. We achieved a control of the spallation process that enabled the fabrication of closed spallation nanocavities and their periodic arrangements. Due to their topology closed magnetic nanocavities can support unique couplings of multiple excitations (magnetic, optical, acoustic, spintronic). We investigate generation of exchange magnons by ultrashort, picosecond acoustic pulses propagating through ferromagnetic thin films. Using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations we derive the dispersion relation for exchange magnons for an external magnetic field tilted with respect to the film normal. Decomposing the solution in a series of standing spin wave modes, we derive a system of ordinary differential equations and driven harmonic oscillator equations describing the dynamics of individual magnon mode. The external magnetoelastic driving force is given by the time-dependent spatial Fourier components of acoustic strain pulses inside the layer. Dependencies of the magnon excitation efficiencies on the duration of the acoustic pulses and the external magnetic field highlight the role of acoustic bandwidth and phonon-magnon phase matching. Our simulations for ferromagnetic nickel evidence the possibility of ultrafast magneto-acoustic excitation of exchange magnons within the bandwidth of acoustic pulses in thin samples under conditions readily obtained in femtosecond pump-probe experiments.

We demonstrate the nonlinear frequency conversion of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) frequency by optically excited elastic waves in a thin metallic film on dielectric substrates. Time-resolved probing of the magnetization directly witnesses magneto-elastically driven second harmonic generation, sum- and difference frequency mixing from two distinct frequencies, as well as parametric downconversion of each individual drive frequency. Starting from the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations, we derive an analytical equation of an elastically driven nonlinear parametric oscillator and show that frequency mixing is dominated by the parametric modulation of FMR frequency.

We generate in-plane magnetoelastic waves in nickel films using the all-optical transient grating technique. When performed on amorphous glass substrates, two dominant magnetoelastic excitations can be resonantly driven by the underlying elastic distortions, the Rayleigh Surface Acoustic Wave and the Surface Skimming Longitudinal Wave. An applied field, oriented in the sample plane, selectively tunes the coupling between magnetic precession and one of the elastic waves, thus demonstrating selective excitation of coexisting, large amplitude magnetoelastic waves. Analytical calculations based on the Green's function approach corroborate the generation of the non-equilibrium surface acoustic transients.

Ultrafast optical excitation of gold-cobalt bilayers triggers the nontrivial interplay between the electronic, acoustic, and magnetic degrees of freedom. Laser-heated electrons generated at the gold-air interface diffuse through the layer of gold and strongly overheat the lattice in cobalt resulting in the emission of ultrashort acoustic pulses and generation of exchange-coupled magnons. Time-resolved optical measurements allow for extracting the thermal boundary (Kapitza) resistances at metal/metal interfaces and the hot electron diffusion length in ferromagnetic materials. Both the experimental data and the analytical treatment of the two-temperature model reveal the role of the Kapitza resistance in transient lattice overheating.

The detection of ultrashort laser-generated acoustic pulses at a metal surface and the reconstruction of the acoustic strain profile are investigated. A 2 ps-long acoustic pulse generated in an SrRuO$_{3}$ layer propagates through an adjacent gold layer and is detected at its surface by a reflected probe pulse. We show that the intricate shape of the transient reflectivity waveform and the ability to resolve acoustic pulses shorter than the optical skin depth are controlled by a single parameter, which is determined by the ratio of the real and imaginary parts of the photoelastic constant of the material. We also demonstrate a Fourier transform-based algorithm that can be used to extract acoustic strain profiles from transient reflectivity measurements.

Ultrafast laser excited hot electrons can transport energy supersonically far from the region where they are initially produced. We show that this ultrafast energy transport is responsible of the emission of coherent acoustic phonons deeply beneath the free surface of a copper metal sample. In particular we demonstrate that enough energy carried by these hot electrons over a distance as large as 220nm at room temperature in copper can be converted into coherent acoustic phonons. In order to demonstrate this effect, several configurations of time-resolved optical experiments of time of flight of coherent acoustic phonons and of hot electrons have been performed., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

It is shown theoretically that a single a few picoseconds long acoustic pulse can reverse magnetization in a magneto-strictive material Terfenol-D. Following giant magneto-elastic changes of free energy density the magnetization vector is kicked out of a local in-plane energy mininum and decays into another minimum. For acoustic pulse duration significantly shorter than magnetization precession period $\tau_{ac}$<<$T_{prec}$, the switching threshold is determined by the {\it acoustic pulse area}, i.e. pulse integral in time domain, similar to coherent phenomena in optics. Simulation results are summarized in a magneto-acoustic switching diagram and discussed in the context of all-optical magnetization switching by circularly polarized light pulses.
