The Nascentes do Rio Parnaíba National Park (NPNP), located in Brazilian Cerrado, protects portions of three river basins: headwaters of Parnaíba, a small portion in upper Tocantins-Araguaia, and tributaries of the middle section of the São Francisco. This protected area is in the boundaries of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia, also known as MATOPIBA, a region that has established rapid agricultural expansion associated to land conflicts between corporate agriculture, family agriculture, protected areas, indigenous territories, and quilombola communities. The knowledge of the ichthyofauna in this region is scarce while the impacts on the aquatic environments are increasing. We made a survey of fishes in the NPNP and its surroundings areas, estimating richness, endemics, introduced and shared species between river basins. During 2014, 54 sampling sites were visited, 19 in the NPNP and 35 in the surrounding area. Ninety-five species, 51 genera, 22 families, and six orders were recorded, of which 38 (40%) are in the NPNP. One introduced species were recorded in the Parnaíba River basin and no endangered species were registered. Our data corroborate the importance of the network of protected areas for the preservation of Cerrado fishes, including some possibly undescribed and restricted-range species that may be threatened due to intense agricultural encroachment in the MATOPIBA region. Resumo O Parque Nacional Nascentes do Rio Parnaíba (PNNP), localizado no Cerrado brasileiro, protege diferentes porções de três bacias hidrográficas, as cabeceiras do Parnaíba, uma pequena porção do alto rio Tocantins e tributários do trecho médio do São Francisco. Esta área protegida está localizada nos limites dos estados do Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí e Bahia, também conhecida como MATOPIBA, região que tem apresentado rápida expansão agrícola associada a conflitos fundiários do agronegócio com agricultura familiar, áreas protegidas, territórios indígenas e comunidades quilombolas. O conhecimento da ictiofauna nessas regiões é escasso, embora os impactos sobre os ecossistemas aquáticos sejam crescentes. Assim, elaboramos um levantamento de peixes do PNNP e em seu entorno, identificando a riqueza, espécies endêmicas, introduzidas e compartilhadas entre bacias hidrográficas. Durante o ano de 2014 foram visitados 54 locais de amostragem, 19 no PNNP e 35 no entorno. Foram coletadas 95 espécies, 51 gêneros, 22 famílias e seis ordens, das quais 38 espécies (40%) estão no PNNP. Uma espécie introduzida foi registrada na bacia do rio Parnaíba e nenhuma espécie ameaçada de extinção foi registrada. Os dados aqui apresentados corroboram a importância da rede de áreas protegidas para a preservação dos peixes do Cerrado, com espécies potencialmente novas e de distribuição restrita, que podem estar ameaçadas devido à intensa expansão agrícola na região do MATOPIBA.

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. We provide the first record of Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther, 1866) in a river basin in the northeastern Brazil. Specimens were collected in the Jaguaribe River basin, João Pessoa, Paraíba state, Brazil. Two hundred eighty-one specimens, corresponding to 143 males and 138 females of X. maculatus, were collected at nine sites along the basin, from 2017 to 2019. Specimens total length ranged from 17.5 to 26.6 mm in males and from 11.7 to 32.7 mm in females. Introduction of non-native species greatly threatens the biological diversity worldwide. When introduced into a new habitat, X. maculatus usually decreases microcrustacean, macroinvertebrate and native fish populations.

The Rivulidae fish family, which includes Neotropical seasonal killifishes, is one of the most diverse taxonomic groups in the aquatic systems of Caatinga in Brazil. Cynolebias and Hypsolebias genera, with 20 and 35 endemic species, respectively, concentrate the greatest diversity of rivulid species in the semiarid. Sixty-eight years after the first records of annual killifishes in the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga ecoregion (MNCE), only four valid species have been sampled in this area. Here we combined bibliographic surveys and recent samplings to investigate the distribution of seasonal rivulids in MNCE. Twenty-one records were obtained, nine of which are new localities, expanding the distribution of three species: Hypsolebias martinsi, H. antenori and Cynolebias microphthalmus. Hypsolebiaslongignatus is still only known from its type locality in Ceará, near the Environmental Protection Area in Pacoti River, and has not been sampled ever since its description in 2008. Among the four species present in MNCE, H. antenori is the only species occurring within the limits of a conservation unit in the Furna Feia National Park. Anthropogenic impacts were observed in most temporary habitats visited, which ranged from river channel to small ponds in cave entrances. All records are found in coastal basins that discharge in the northern coast of the MNCE, in Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte states, which are crucial for the conservation of the Caatinga’s killifishes. The results also evidenced the importance of karstic habitats in the Jandaíra Formation as potential biotopes for seasonal fish in MNCE. This information must be used to update the conservation status of these species and highlight the importance of strategies for preserving the Caatinga’s temporary aquatic habitats, which should be considered for environmental licensing purposes.

A new species of Parotocinclus is described from the Rio Mamanguape basin, in the State of Paraiba, north-eastern Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all of its congeners, except for P. bahiensis, P. cesarpintoi, P. jumbo, P. nandae and P. spilosoma, by the presence of an abdomen covered by a few small and dispersed platelets (vs. an abdomen entirely covered by large plates in adult individuals or the absence of plates in that region). The new species differs from those mentioned above with respect to several features, such as an exposed pectoral girdle and supporting odontodes medially and laterally, the number of premaxillary and dentary teeth, odontodes covering only the lateral portion of the cleithrum and the absence of irregular golden lines on the head and body (colour in vivo). The new species was collected only in the upper and middle portions of the Rio Mamanguape basin, suggesting a geographic distribution restricted to the Caatinga biome.

Construction of water diversions in drylands is boosted by increasing demands for freshwater often due to prolonged droughts. Even though these mega-enterprises result in benefits to society, it also poses a threat to freshwater biodiversity. In Northeastern Brazil, for instance, the São Francisco River Integration Project already supplies water for millions of people, but over time it will also favor the introductions of multiple aquatic species in the river basins of the Northeastern Caatinga and Coastal Drainages ecoregion. These introductions can cause unprecedented impacts in the native ichthyofauna, such as homogenization of freshwater faunas, transmission of pathogens and loss of native species. This study compares the composition and relative frequency of fish species from Poções reservoir using data obtained by gillnetting and trawling before and after the São Francisco diversion in the dry and rainy seasons, and reports the first detection of Moenkhausia costae introduction in the Paraíba do Norte basin, through the São Francisco River channel. Our results show some evidences that M. costae may become dominant and invasive in Poções reservoir. The introduction of M. costae adds a new component of disruption for these freshwaters and may pose a serious threat to the endemic ichthyofauna in lentic and lotic systems from the Paraíba do Norte basin. Resumo: Obras para transposição de rios em regiões secas do mundo têm sido impulsionadas pelo aumento da demanda por água doce, muitas vezes associadas às secas prolongadas que são intrínsecas a essas regiões. Embora tais megaempreendimentos possam trazer benefícios para a sociedade, também representam uma ameaça para a biodiversidade aquática. No Nordeste do Brasil, por exemplo, o Projeto de Integração do Rio São Francisco já fornece água para milhões de pessoas, mas com o tempo também contribuirá com a introdução de várias espécies aquáticas nas bacias hidrográficas da ecorregião Nordeste da Caatinga e Drenagem Costeira. Essas introduções podem causar impactos sem precedentes, tais como homogeneização da ictiofauna nativa, transmissão de patógenos e perda de espécies nativas. Este estudo compara a composição e frequência relativa de espécies de peixes do açude Poções usando dados coletados com redes de espera e de arrasto antes e depois da transposição do rio São Francisco, nos períodos seco e chuvoso, e relata o primeiro caso de introdução de Moenkhausia costae na Bacia do Rio Paraíba do Norte, através do canal do rio São Francisco. Nossos resultados mostram que M. costae poderá se tornar dominante e invasora no açude Poções. A introdução de M. costae adiciona um novo componente de perturbação para esse açude e pode representar uma séria ameaça à ictiofauna endêmica de sistemas lênticos e lóticos da bacia do rio Paraíba do Norte.

A new species of Parotocinclus, apparently endemic to the rio Jacuípe basin, Bahia State, Brazil, is described. The new species is distinguished from congeners, except P. bidentatus, P. cabessadecuia, P. dani, P. halbothi, P. muriaensis, P. pentakelis, P. seridoensis, and P. spilurus, by the presence of a reduced adipose fin. The new species differs from the aforementioned species by the absence of unicuspid accessory teeth, abdomen with broad naked areas between lateral and medial patches of plates, and snout tip completely covered by plates and odontodes. The adipose fin of the new species is restrict solely to the adipose-fin spine, lacking the adipose-fin membrane, a reduction pattern previously described to P. halbothi, a congener from rivers of the Amazonas and Marowijne basins. RESUMO Uma espécie nova de Parotocinclus, aparentemente endêmica da bacia do rio Jacuípe, Estado da Bahia, Brasil, é descrita. A espécie nova se distingue de suas congêneres, exceto P. bidentatus, P. cabessadecuia, P. dani, P. halbothi, P. muriaensis, P. pentakelis, P. seridoensis e P. spilurus, pela presença de nadadeira adiposa reduzida. A nova espécie difere das espécies mencionadas anteriormente pela ausência de dentição acessória unicúspide, abdômen com amplas áreas nuas entre o grupo de placas laterais e o grupo de placas medianas e ponta do focinho completamente coberta por placas e odontódeos. A nadadeira adiposa da nova espécie é restrita somente ao espinho, sem a membrana da adiposa, um padrão de redução descrito para P. halbothi, uma congênere de rios da bacia Amazônica e da bacia do rio Marowijne.

Parotocinclus haroldoi is separated from most of its congeners by having an abdomen covered by relatively large plates (vs. naked abdomen or with small plates). This species occurs in Parnaíba River basin with two other congeners, P. cabessadecuia and P. cearensis. Parotocinclus haroldoi is distinguished from P. cabessadecuia for having developed adipose fin (vs. rudimentary or absent adipose fin) and P. cearensis, for having abdomen covered by entirely plates (vs. almost naked abdomen with small sparse plates). Parotocinclus haroldoi is known from the Parnaíba river basin in the state of Piauí, Maranhão-Piauí.

Among Neotropical freshwater ecoregions, the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga (MNCE) is a fish knowledge gap. Its temporary drainages are receptors of the São Francisco interbasin water transfer project (SFR-IWT) in the Brazilian semiarid. We provide a comprehensive baseline of fish richness of the five SFR-IWT basins. Species richness, shared, endemic, threatened and non-native species were obtained using sampling, ichthyologic collections, literature and online repositories (306 localities). In total 121, species were recorded, 111 of them native, and 16 (14.41%) listed for all basins. Higher richness of native species (78, 70.27%) was recorded in the São Francisco lower-middle stretch (SFRE), including 23 endemic, 61 (54.95%) in MNCE basins (13 endemic), and 28 (25.23%) shared between both ecoregions. In the MNCE, 50 species were recorded in Jaguaribe (JAG), 39 in Piranhas-Açu, 36 in Paraíba do Norte, and 32 in Apodi-Mossoró (APO). The number of species shared between the SFRE and each receptor basin varied from 24 (23.08%, JAG) to 20 (22.22%, APO). JAG contains 81.97% of the receptor basins’ species. Its higher richness and endemism deserve special attention regarding the ongoing hydrological changes. This study will help detect possible modifications in the ichthyofauna of the main MNCE drainages. Resumo Dentre as ecorregiões dulcícolas neotropicais, a Nordeste Médio-Oriental (MNCE) é uma lacuna de conhecimento sobre peixes. Suas drenagens temporárias são receptoras do projeto de transposição do São Francisco (SFR-IWT) no semiárido brasileiro. Fornecemos uma linha de base abrangente da riqueza de peixes das cinco bacias do SFR-IWT. Riqueza de espécies, espécies compartilhadas, endêmicas, ameaçadas e não-nativas foram obtidas através de amostragem, coleções ictiológicas, literatura e repositórios online (306 localidades). No total, foram registradas 121 espécies, 111 nativas e 16 (14,41%) listadas para todas as bacias. A maior riqueza de espécies nativas (78, 70,27%) foi registrada no trecho sub-médio do São Francisco (SFRE), incluindo 23 endêmicas e 61 (54,95%) nas bacias da MNCE (13 endêmicas), e 28 (25,23 %) compartilhadas entre ambas ecorregiões. Na MNCE, foram registradas 50 espécies na Jaguaribe (JAG), 39 na Piranhas-Açu, 36 na Paraíba do Norte e 32 na Apodi-Mossoró (APO). O número de espécies compartilhadas entre SFRE e cada bacia receptora variou de 24 (23,08%, JAG) a 20 (22,22%, APO). JAG contém 81,97% das espécies das bacias receptoras. Sua maior riqueza e endemismo merecem atenção especial em relação às mudanças hidrológicas em curso. Este estudo ajudará a detectar possíveis modificações na ictiofauna das principais drenagens da MNCE.

The mid-north-eastern Caatinga is a semiarid freshwater ecoregion in North-eastern Brazil that is dominated by temporary rivers and is currently classified as one of the least ichthyologically-known ecoregions in the world. The present study aimed to provide an updated checklist of mid-north-eastern Caatinga ecoregion (MNCE) freshwater fish species and evaluate their taxonomic identity using morphology, DNA barcoding and multiple species delimitation approaches. After reviewing published studies and ichthyological collections, 119 species were identified. Among these were 94 putatively valid native and 14 non-native species, five undescribed native species, four new records for the MNCE, 11 potential cases of misidentification and 14 species listed as inquirenda. Additionally, 252 individuals from 49 species were barcoded, revealing three potential taxonomic synonyms. The combined molecular approaches estimated a total of 91 native species, although a finalized species list for the MNCE awaits additional taxonomic revisions and field surveys. This study provides the most up-to-date species checklist for the MNCE and a molecular reference database for identifying MNCE fishes with DNA barcodes. Results highlight the need to integrate traditional taxonomy with molecular approaches to correctly identify species, especially in taxonomically problematic ecoregions such as the MNCE.

The removal and management of the Atlantic Forest over the past centuries caused the destruction of most of this ecosystem. Among the few remaining areas of Atlantic Forest north of the São Francisco River is the Reserva Biológica(REBIO) Guaribas. This study inventoried the ichthyofauna of the REBIO Guaribas (Mamanguape, Paraíba) and itssurroundings. Two streams were sampled bimonthly (1 within the REBIO and the other adjacent to it) and another 11additional sites were sampled once, resulting in 18 species of fish (7 families and 7 orders). Characiformes was themost representative order, with12 species. This species list is an important tool for impact assessments as well as conservationand management plans, given the current state of knowledge about Brazilian rivers and streams, especiallythose of the northeastern Atlantic Forest.

A re-evaluation of the armoured catfish species of Hypostomus in the Rio Jaguaribe, north-eastern Brazil, was prompted by the discovery of specimens with pale spots on a dark background collected from that basin c. 1936 and deposited at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Recent field collections in the Rio Jarguaribe basin confirmed the presence of the pale-spotted specimens and its distinctiveness as a new species. Hypostomus sertanejo n. sp. is diagnosed from other species of Hypostomus by having fins and dermal-plated regions of head and body with pale spots or vermiculations on darker background, teeth slender, asymmetrically bicuspid and numerous (34-75) on dentary and premaxilla, depressed dorsal-fin spine not reaching adipose spine, unbranched pectoral-fin spine longer than unbranched pelvic-fin ray, seven branched dorsal-fin rays and one (rarely two) predorsal plate(s) bordering supraoccipital. Ancistrus salgadae Fowler 1941 is hypothesized to be a junior synonym of Hypostomus carvalhoi (Miranda-Ribeiro, 1937), a dark-spotted Hypostomus described from the Rio Granjeiro, a tributary to the upper Rio Salgado.

O inventário da ictiofauna do rio Jaguaribe, pequena bacia costeira localizada dentro do perímetro urbano da grande João Pessoa, Estado da Paraíba revelou um total de 21 espécies de peixes, distribuídas em 18 gêneros, 11 famílias e sete ordens. Deste total, 17 espécies são de água doce e cinco marinho-estuarinas. As ordens mais especiosas foram Characiformes com nove espécies (42,8% da amostragem), todas dulcícolas, e Perciformes com seis espécies (28,5%), das quais três são dulcícolas e quatro marinho-estuarinas. Characidae foi a família com maior número de espécies (6 spp., 28,5%), seguida de Cichlidae (3 spp., 14,0%). Duas das espécies de água doce não são nativas, a tilápia (Oreochromis niloticus) e o barrigudinho (Poecilia reticulata). Das 15 espécies de água doce nativas, nove (60%) foram registradas dentro da área da Unidade de Conservação Refúgio da Vida Silvestre Mata do Buraquinho, a qual é cortada pelo curso principal do rio Jaguaribe. A riqueza de espécies registrada neste estudo (21) mostra-se similar ao que tem sido registrado em outros rios costeiros sobre influência da Mata Atlântica da ecorregião Nordeste Médio-Oriental.

Neste trabalho são apresentados dados referentes a um inventário da fauna de peixes do Parque Estadual Mata do Xem-Xém, uma Unidade de Conservação localizada no trecho inferior da bacia hidrográfica do rio Paraíba do Norte, sob domínio de Mata Atlântica, Estado da Paraíba, Brasil. Foram amostrados sete pontos de coleta em diferentes ambientes aquáticos, incluindo rios, riachos, e um lago, situados tanto no interior quanto no entorno da unidade. Foram registradas 15 espécies de peixes, das quais 13 são nativas e duas introduzidas (Oreochromis niloticus e Poecilia reticulata), distribuídas em quatro ordens, seis famílias e 13 gêneros. Embora tenha sido registrada apenas no lago, recomenda-se o controle da população de Oreochromis niloticus desta Unidade de conservação, em função das ameaças que a espécie pode representar à ictiofauna nativa e aos demais ecossistemas aquáticos da região.

Characidium tapuia, a new species apparently endemic to the rio Parnaíba basin, Brazil, is described. The new species is easily distinguished from congeners, except C. lanei, C. nana, and C. samurai, by having a broad and conspicuous dark lateral stripe, extending from the tip of snout to the end of caudal peduncle and by the absence of dark vertical bars on body of specimens larger than 23.0 mm SL. Characidium tapuia differs from the aforementioned species by a series of features, including 12 circumpeduncular scales (vs. 13 or 14 in C. lanei and C. samurai), presence of parietal branch of the supraorbital canal (vs. absence in C. lanei and C. nana), complete lateral line and adipose fin present (vs. lateral line incomplete and adipose fin absent in C. nana), and midlateral stripe with irregular borders (vs. lateral stripe with overall straight borders in C. samurai).

Freshwater ichthyofauna from Brazil Northeast region was considered as being poorly known until recent years, with a considerable number of publications becoming available in the last decade. The present study provides an inventory of freshwater fish species from the Paraíba do Norte River basin located in Paraíba State, Brazil. This inventory is intended to contribute to the of knowledge to the regional fish diversity, pre-transposition of the São Francisco River. Collecting data was obtained from ichthyological databases of both national and foreign institutions. A total of 47 freshwater fish species are registered within the Paraíba do Norte River basin, represented by 38 genera, 20 families and six orders. Characiformes, comprising 47% (22 species), Cichliformes, and Siluriformes are among the most representative orders, 19% (9 species) each, of total recorded species. Seven species of Cichliformes are reported as introduced species in this basin. Cyprinodontiformes and Gobiiformes also registered in this region and correspond to 5% (two species) and Gymnotiformes, Perciformes and Synbranchiformes, 2% (one species each) of total recorded species. Paraíba do Norte River basin stands out in the current national scenario as it comprises the first region from the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga freshwater ecoregion to receive water from the transposition of the São Francisco River. The current inventory is important as it provides scientific data related to the ichthyofauna of Paraíba do Norte River basin prior to the commencement of the river transposition process. An identification key is also given for the freshwater fish species of the region.

Studies focusing the biology of annual fish are still scarce, and in the case of threatened species, research, as well as the adoption of protective measures for these populations, are needed. We present herein the first record of Hypsolebias antenori (Cyprinodontiformes: Cynolebiidae) in temporary pools of Lajedo de Soledade, located in a semiarid region, in Northeastern Brazil. Five individuals (two males and three females) were captured in three temporary pools in May 2017. For the capture, a sieve (50 x 50 cm) with a 4 mm of mesh size was used. The males showed a total length ranging from 3.5 to 4.7 cm (average: 4.1 cm) and body mass amplitude between 0.38 to 0.94 g (average: 0.66 g). The females had a total length from 3.5 to 3.9 cm (average: 3.67 cm) and body mass amplitude of 0.55 to 0.70 g (average: 0.64). Considering that the collection area is one of the most important archaeological sites in Brazil, this endemic species of Caatinga demonstrates the importance of conservation of the environment and serves to support the preservation of the present area that is not recognized and registered as cultural and environmental patrimony.Keywords: Karst, Jandaira Formation, Caatinga, temporary pools, Cynolebiidae, Hypsolebias antenori.

The Mamanguape River Basin is located in a peripheral semi-arid area of South America, with its headwaters and middle reaches running through the Caatinga (from wetter to drier) and its lower reaches through the Atlantic Forest. The objective of this study was to inventory the fish fauna of the Mamanguape river basin through a comprehensive sampling and to discuss its ichthyofaunal dominance pattern. Sampling was conducted between 2015 and 2016 at 38 points throughout. The main river course was sampled at 18 fixed points during two expeditions (dry and wet seasons) using traw nets, cast nets, and dip nets, with a standardized effort. The tributaries were sampled during the dry season at 20 points using an adaptaptation of the AquaRAP methodology. A total of 32 freshwater fish species belonging to 26 genera, 16 families and six orders were recorded, predominantly from the order Characiformes and the family Characidae. Astyanax fasciatus had widest distribution and greatest abundance in the basin. Siluriformes were the second most prevalent order, with five species recorded. Cichla cf. monoculus, Poecilia reticulata and Oreochromis niloticus were non-native records for the basin. Apareiodon davisi, an Endangered species, was recorded.

Phenacorhamdia Dahl, 1961 comprises 11 valid species of small demersal and solitary catfishes which occur mainly along riverbeds and are widely distributed throughout rivers of South America. The genus is included within the Nemuroglanis subclade, and species of Phenacorhamdia can be separated from other heptapterid catfishes through external and internal characters. Diagnostic characters include a prognathous mouth, first ray of dorsal and pectoral fins flexible, eight or nine branched rays in the lower lobe of caudal fin, and optic foramen reduced. A new species of Phenacorhamdia is described herein from the upper Parnaíba river basin. Phenacorhamdia cabocla sp. nov is distinct from its congeners by: total vertebrae 44, nine of which with pleural ribs; bifid neural spines until vertebrae 13; last precaudal vertebrae lacking pleural ribs; 7–8 branchiostegal rays; pectoral-fin rays i+6; first pterygiophore of dorsal-fin associated to the neural spine of twelfth vertebrae; dorsal-fin pterygiophores associated to vertebrae 12 to 16; anal-fin with nine branched and 3–4 unbranched rays; upper and lower lobes of caudal fin with 8–9 branched rays each; adipose fin corresponding to 14.9%–18.1% of standard length; and snout length corresponding to 30.0%–35.9% of head length.

The Gurgueia River in southern Piauí state, Brazil, is the largest affluent on the right margin of the Parnaíba River basin. This study aimed to inventory the Gurgueia River ichthyofauna, and contribute to the knowledge of fish diversity in Northeastern Brazil. We sampled 71 locations throughout the Gurgueia sub-basin between 2006 and 2014, which resulted in 90 fish species representing 67 genera, 26 families and six orders, including two non-native species. Six species are newly recorded for the Parnaíba basin (Hasemania nana, Hemigrammus brevis, H. guyanensis, H. ora, Corydoras sp. and Cetopsorhamdia sp.), increasing its freshwater ichthyofauna to 152 species. The Gurgueia River contains 59.2% of the ichthyofauna known for the Parnaíba basin, and can be used as a reference point for the establishment of priority areas for the conservation of the freshwater fish fauna of the Brazilian Northeast.

Intraspecific morphological variation can be generated by a set of historical and ecological processes, and can be induced by anthropogenic actions. One such activity that has large-scale environmental impacts in freshwater environments is interbasin water transfer. Brazil’s Mid-Northeastern Caatinga freshwater ecoregion is going through an interbasin diversion that will link waters from Sao Francisco ecoregion with the four major basins of Mid-Northeastern Caatinga. Here, we aimed to evaluate the morphological variation of two cichlids, Cichlasoma orientale and Crenicichla menezesi, from both ecoregions and test, whether this morphological variation is related to historical isolation among basins and/or to local water flow regimes, through mtDNA (cytb) and geometric morphometric approaches. Our results showed, for both species, significant morphological differences among basins. However, the comparisons between genetic and morphological differences among basins were not significant. Additionally, a significant shared morphological pattern between species (body depth and mouth position) among different habitats was found. These results reinforce a potential role of environmental pressures upon fish morphology, possibly through phenotypic plasticity. The evolutionary role of morphological responses in freshwater fish populations—especially in variable environments—is discussed, as well as the potential eco-evolutionary damages that might result from the artificial river connection.

The scale of impact that the São Francisco River transposition project will have on the drainage basins ichthyofauna is still unclear, however, changes in the fish community diversity and abundance is probable. Surveys and registries of the fish fauna within key systems of the catchment basins are priority actions for the conservation of the aquatic diversity. This study conducted a taxonomic survey of the Epitácio Pessoa (Boqueirão municipality) and Argemiro de Figueiredo (Itatuba municipality), reservoirs ichthyofauna, both belonging to the Paraíba do Norte River basin, important socioeconomic and environmental systems for the transposition project. Monthly sampling was carried out between October/2014 to September/2015 in the upstream and downstream zones of the reservoirs. The specimens were collected using dip nets, drag nets, and sieves, and placed on ice in the field. Later in the laboratory, they were transferred to 10% formaldehyde and then preserved in 70% alcohol. A total of 2,328 specimens were collected representing five orders, 14 families, and 31 species in both systems. At the upstream zones 2057 specimens were collected representing 17 species, and at the downstream zones 271 specimens were collected representing 24 species. Of the 31 species recorded, 13 species are endemic to watersheds that drain rivers from the Brazilian semi-arid region, and seven species (Apareiodon davisi, Characidium bimaculatum, Hypostomus pusarum, Parotocinclus jumbo, P. spilosoma, Pimelodella enochi, and Prochilodus brevis) are endemic to the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga Ecoregion (MNCE). Among the latter, Parotocinclus spilosoma and Pimelodella enochi are endemic to the Paraíba do Norte River. Apareiodon davisi is classified as Endangered according to the current published Brazil’s official list of endangered species of fish and aquatic invertebrates. This pre-transposition ichthyofaunistic survey will serve as a basis for future post-transposition analyzes, considering this action will change the scope of the ecosystems diversity.

Ichthyological studies in coastal basins of the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga ecoregion were first conducted in the early 20th century, including collections from the Ceará-Mirim River basin, in northeastern Brazil. Besides a few systematics and ecological studies, the knowledge on fishes from this watershed is still considered partial and restricted to the freshwater portion. Thus, the objective of this paper was to conduct a comprehensive ichthyological survey of the entire Ceará-Mirim River basin, from the headwaters to the estuarine area. Fish surveys were conducted from 2011 to 2016 using varied fishing gear, resulting in the record of 63 native species (24 freshwater, 15 estuarine, and 24 marine species) and two introduced species. Four species are putatively endemic to the ecoregion, and 48 consist of new records for the basin. According to the Brazilian's threatened fish list, three species are currently classified as 'vulnerable' (Megalops atlanticus, Hippocampus reidi and Mycteroperca bonaci), four as 'near threatened' (Kryptolebias hermaphroditus, Dormitator maculatus, Lutjanus sygnagris and L. jocu) and three as 'data deficient' (Cheirodon jaguaribensis, Mugil curema and Sphoeroides testudineus). The Ceará-Mirim River basin does not have any protected areas and has been suffering multiple anthropogenic impacts, however the "Centro Tecnológico de Aquicultura" (Aquaculture Technological Center) of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (CTA/UFRN) at the lower portion of the basin may help in the conservation of the estuarine and estuarine fish species.

Recent taxonomic studies indicated the presence of several undescribed species in the rio Parnaíba basin. Among those, a new species of Parotocinclus endemic of this drainage is herein described. It differs from most of its congeners, including the sympatric P. haroldoi and P. cearensis, by a vestigial or rudimentary adipose fin (vs. conspicuous adipose fin). This character is also present in P. bidentatus and P. muriaensis (both from the rio Paraíba do Sul basin, southeastern Brazil), P. spilurus (rio Jaguaribe basin, northeastern Brazil), P. seridoensis (rio Piranhas-Açu basin, northeastern Brazil), P. halbothi (rios Trombetas and Marowijne basins, northern Brazil and Suriname) and P. dani (from rio Tapajós in Mato Grosso State, Brazil). The new species differs from these latter species mainly by the abdomen extensively covered by broad dermal plates. It also differs from P. haroldoi and P. cearensis by light bands between the snout tip and the nostrils. RESUMO Estudos taxonômicos recentes indicaram a presença de várias espécies não descritas na bacia do rio Parnaíba. Dentre estas, uma nova espécie de Parotocinclus endêmica desta drenagem é aqui descrita. Ela difere da maioria dos seus congêneres, incluindo as simpátricas P. haroldoi e P. cearensis, por apresentar nadadeira adiposa vestigial ou rudimentar (vs. nadadeira adiposa desenvolvida). Este caráter também está presente em P. bidentatus e P. muriaensis (ambos do rio Paraíba do Sul, sudeste do Brasil), P. spilurus (bacia do rio Jaguaribe, nordeste do Brasil), P. seridoensis (bacia do rio Piranhas-Açu, nordeste do Brasil), P. halbothi (bacias dos rios Trombetas e Marowijne, norte do Brasil e no Suriname) e P. dani (do rio Tapajós no Estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil). A nova espécie difere destas principalmente pelo abdômen extensivamente coberto por placas dérmicas largas. Também difere de P. haroldoi e P. cearensis pela presença de faixas claras entre a ponta do focinho e as narinas.

Mundaú river basin is located at Center-North Ceará State and occupies a total area of 2,227 km2, including Estuário do Rio Mundaú Environmental Protection Area. This study aimed to catalog the fishes of this basin. Collections were performed with active and passive gear in 35 sampling sites, between 2012 and 2014, in several habitats (main channels, streams, floodplains, permanent and temporary pools, ponds, and dams). A total of 2,545 specimens were collected, belonging to 55 species distributed in 10 orders, 31 families, and 50 genera; 30 of these are strictly freshwater species, and 25 estuarine-marine species. Three species (Hemigrammus guyanensis Gery, 1995, H. rodwayi Durbin, 1909 and Poecilia sarrafae Bragança & Costa, 2011) represent new records for the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga ecoregion. Besides, two cynolebiid species, Hypsolebias sp. and Anablepsoides cearensis (Costa & Vono, 2009), were found and the latter, currently classified as critically endangered, had its occurrence area widened.

Hypostomus johnii (Steindachner) was described from the rio Parnaíba basin in the state of Piauí and the rio São Francisco basin in the state of Bahia. Despite the good quality of the original description of H. johnii, it does not currently allow its distinction from congeners. Thus, H. johnii is redescribed based on the analysis of the types and several recently collected specimens. Recent collecting efforts of the rios Parnaíba and São Francisco basins resulted in specimens only being found in the rio Parnaíba basin. This raises doubts about whether H. johnii occurs in the rio São Francisco basin. The species is distinguished from its congeners by having a high number of teeth on the premaxilla and dentary (between 60-115); small to moderate-sized dark spots with a light background; absence of keels on flanks; and abdominal plates more evident on laterals. A lectotype of H. johnii is designated herein and H. eptingi is considered a junior synonym of H. johnii. RESUMO Hypostomus johnii (Steindachner) foi descrita a partir de espécimes da bacia do rio Parnaíba, no Estado do Piauí e da bacia do rio São Francisco, no Estado da Bahia. Apesar da descrição original de H. johnii ter sido adequada para a época, esta não permite atualmente a sua diferenciação dos outros congêneres. Portanto, H. johnii é redescrita, baseado na análise dos tipos e de espécimes recentemente coletados. Recentes esforços de coleta nas bacias do rios Parnaíba e São Francisco resultaram em espécimes coletados apenas na bacia do rio Parnaíba. Este fato coloca em dúvida a ocorrência de H. johnii na bacia do rio São Francisco. Hypostomus johnii é diferenciada de seus congêneres principalmente por possuir um elevado número de dentes no pré-maxilar e dentário (entre 60-115), por apresentar pequenas manchas escuras de tamanho moderado sobre um fundo claro; ausência de quilhas sobre flancos; e as placas do abdômen mais evidente nas laterais. Um lectótipo para H. johnii é aqui designado e H. eptingi é considerado sinônimo júnior de H. johnii.

The Caatinga, located in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil, is dominated by a seasonally dry tropical forest and encompasses a relatively modest hydrographic network, characterized by intermittent water courses. Even the major rivers which are perennial, such as the Sao Francisco and Parnaiba, have mostly intermittent tributaries within the Caatinga. Despite some early explorations dating back to sixteenth century and the systematic compilation of fish species which started in the beginning of the nineteenth century, until recently the fish fauna of the Caatinga biome has been considered poorly known due to the lack of adequate sampling. The present study assessed the current state of knowledge on this fish fauna, in terms of species richness, endemism, and conservation status, based on a literature review, recent field work, and collection records. Our major result was finding a considerable increment in the species richness in the biome when compared with previous estimates, totaling 386 fish species, 371 of which are native freshwater species, 203 are considered endemic to the hydrographic ecoregions where the Caatinga occurs, 15 are introduced from other basins, and 15 listed species have doubtful taxonomic status. Additionally, 32 species are currently recognized as undescribed. We also highlight that the 33 endangered fish species in the Caatinga are possibly not included in protected areas, and that the conservation units in the biome are not enough to ensure protection for endemic and endangered fish species.

The purpose of this study was to inventory the ichthyofauna of the coastal Pratagi River basin, located on the east coast of the state, region with intense tourist activities. A total of 2,181 specimens were collected, from August 2011 to August 2013, using sieves, trawls, cast nets, traps and gillnets. Additionally, two species (Centropomus sp. and Lutjanus alexandrei) have only been recorded through underwater observations, summing 22 species and genera, 18 families and nine orders. Along the Pratagi drainage some human impacts were identified, mainly related to tourist activities, such as removal of riparian vegetation and sedimentation caused by the passage of vehicles on dunes. Species richness was lower near the most visited places and greater in the lower portion of the basin, due to the presence of estuarine and marine species. Apparently, a set of small waterfalls act as a barrier to some fish species, both upstream and downstream.

A new species of Parotocinclus is described from the upper rio Piranhas-Açu basin, northeastern Brazil. The new species differs from all its congeners, except P. bidentatus, P. muriaensis (both from rio Paraíba do Sul basin, southeastern Brazil), and P. spilurus (rio Jaguaribe basin, northeastern Brazil) by presenting the adipose fin rudimentary or absent. The new species differs from P. bidentatus, P. muriaensis, and P. spilurus mainly by presenting the abdomen region extensively naked, with few reduced rounded dermal platelets between the pectoral girdle and the anus. Parotocinclus seridoensis is probably an endemic species of the semi-arid Caatinga, region where the genus presents high species richness. Uma espécie nova de Parotocinclus é descrita da bacia do alto rio Piranhas-Açu, nordeste do Brasil. A espécie nova difere de todas as congêneres, exceto P. bidentatus, P. muriaensis (ambas da bacia do rio Paraíba do Sul, sudeste do Brasil) e P. spilurus (bacia do rio Jaguaribe, nordeste do Brasil), por apresentar nadadeira adiposa rudimentar ou ausente. A espécie nova difere de P. bidentatus, P. muriaensis e P. spilurus principalmente por apresentar no abdômen extensas áreas nuas, com poucas placas dérmicas reduzidas e arredondadas entre a cintura peitoral e o ânus. Parotocinclus seridoensis é provavelmente uma espécie endêmica da Caatinga semi-árida, região onde o gênero apresenta elevada riqueza de espécies.

Humid highland forest enclaves are remnants of Atlantic Forest found in tablelands within the Caatinga biome (Northeastern Brazil), which emerged during interglacial periods in the Pleistocene. These ecosystems have a highly diverse and endemic fish fauna. Most earlier surveys have focused on the tableland of Borborema (Pernambuco and Paraíba States). In this study we surveyed the fish fauna of the humid forest enclaves in the tablelands of Ibiapaba and Araripe, based on samples collected in the rainy season (March and April) between 2009 and 2014. The 45 sampling points covered rivers, streams and reservoirs in five river basins belonging to three ecoregions. The species were listed according to drainage divide, and endemism was determined for each ecoregion and for the Caatinga. Our area was more species-rich (n=59) than Borborema (n=27). The samples included five introduced species and 29 species endemic to the Caatinga (49.1% of the sampled species). The distribution of Parotocinclus haroldoi was expanded to the Mid-Northeastern Caatinga ecoregion (Timonha river basin, Ceará State). Our study intends to make a significant contribution to current knowledge of the ichthyofauna in humid highland forest enclaves of semiarid Northeastern Brazil, identified as a priority in the conservation of the biodiversity in the Caatinga. Resumo Florestas úmidas são enclaves de Mata Atlântica em regiões elevadas inseridas no bioma Caatinga que surgiram no Pleistoceno em eventos interglaciais. Esses ecossistemas abrigam alta diversidade de espécies para diversos táxons e elevadas taxas de endemismo. A maioria dos levantamentos de peixes nesses ecossistemas foi realizada no Planalto da Borborema, nos Estados de Pernambuco e Paraíba. Dessa forma, visando conhecer a ictiofauna de dois enclaves de florestas úmidas no nordeste brasileiro, foram feitas coletas no período chuvoso (Março e Abril) entre 2009 e 2014 no Planalto da Ibiapaba e na Chapada do Araripe. Foram amostrados 45 pontos em rios, riachos e reservatórios em cinco bacias hidrográficas e três ecorregiões. A lista de espécies por drenagem e o endemismo foi definido para cada ecorregião e para a Caatinga. A riqueza de peixes (59 espécies) foi superior quando comparada a dos enclaves da Borborema (27), com cinco espécies introduzidas e 29 endêmicas para a Caatinga, o que representa 49,1% das espécies capturadas. Destaca-se a expansão de ocorrência de Parotocinclus haroldoi para a ecorregião do Mid-Northeastern Caatinga, na microbacia do rio Timonha, no Estado do Ceará. Este estudo pretende contribuir com informações inéditas para o conhecimento ictiofaunístico dos ecossistemas aquáticos dos brejos de alitude do semiárido brasileiro, apontadas como prioritárias para conservação da biodiversidade da Caatinga.

Eight species are considered valid in the genus Achirus (Lacepede), distributed on both sides of the Americas, mainly in marine and estuarine waters with A. novoae being the only species of this genus restricted to freshwaters of the Orinoco basin and its delta. A new species, A. mucuri, is described from the estuary of the Mucuri River, a small system in Bahia state, northeastern Brazil. A. mucuri differs from congeners, except A. novoae, in having a connection between the branchiostegal membrane and the isthmus. A. mucuri differs from A. novoae in its labial fimbriae and latero-sensory cephalic canal pattern.

The Parnaíba River is the largest hydrographic basin with its limits entirely within the northeastern region of Brazil. It is one of the few perennial rivers in the Brazilian Northeastern Region, running predominantly in the area of Caatinga on the eastern portion (with intermittent drainages associated to this type of environment), and partly extending into the Cerrado region on the western portion. The objective of this study was to describe the diversity of freshwater fishes of the Parnaíba River basin by conducting a comprehensive ichthyofauna inventory of the basin. The sampling design of this study was based on the placement of (1) Fixed Sites for seasonal collection (dry and wet season, two years) in the three portions of the main course of the Parnaíba River, and (2) “Aquarap” protocol collections which covered the entire basin. The collection effort consisted of 244 sampling sites surveyed along the entire basin between the years 2004 and 2011. Fish were collected with the use of seines, cast nets, gill nets and dip nets; only the first two fishing gears were used in Fixed Sites. As a result, 146 species of freshwater fish were recorded in the Parnaíba River basin, distributed in 103 genera, 36 families and 11 orders. The registered endemism reached a total of 54 species.

The Seridó/Borborema region is located between the States Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte and a priority area for conservation of the Caatinga. This region is under the hydrological influence of the middle portion of Piranhas-Açu River basin. Previous systematic inventories of the ichthyofauna of this Caatinga’s area are not significant. The Caatinga fish fauna is threatened due the advancement of historic anthropogenic activities, mainly agricultural. Furthermore, another relevant aspect is the recent governmental decision of transferring water from São Francisco River to other Northern river basins, which includes the Piranhas-Açu basin. This study performed a systematic survey of the Seridó/Borborema’s ichthyofauna. The sites were sampled during the years 2006 and 2007 (four annual, diurnal samples), using three different types of gear: beach seine nets, cast net and gillnets. We captured 13,009 individuals of 5 orders, 14 families, 28 genera and 35 species of fish. The predominant orders were Characiformes (21 species), Siluriformes (6) and Perciformes (5). The greatest number of species (11) was catch from the family Characidae, followed by Cichlidae (5) and Loricariidae (4). This inventory produced a comprehensive sampling of the middle portion of Piranhas-Açu River basin and its result overcomes the diversity reported in previous studies (22 species) on the same region.

Cynolebias parnaibensis from the Canindé River drainage, Parnaíba River basin, northeastern Brazil, is described. It is considered to be a member of a clade endemic to the Caatinga. The clade is diagnosed, e. g., by a series of structural modifications of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus, which is related to the sound production exhibited by males during courtship behavior. The courtship sound of C. parnaibensis consists of a single pulse named as thump (duration 0.031-0.133s; interthump intervals 0.020-8.319s; dominant frequency 70.3-93.8 Hz). The new species is distinguished from all other congeners by a combination of 27-31 neuromasts around eye, 29-33 supraorbital neuromasts, 16-18 dorsal-fin rays and 19 anal-fin rays in males, 28-31 caudal-fin rays, 33-36 scales in the longitudinal series, 3+10 gill-rakers in the first branchial arch, absence of second pharyngobranchial teeth, absence of contact organs on the flank scales, 34-35 vertebrae, absence of teeth on vomer, and presence of transverse series of scales on the anal-fin base. Cynolebias parnaibensis, da drenagem do rio Canindé, bacia do rio Parnaíba, nordeste do Brasil, é descrita. Ela é considerada um membro de um clado endêmico da Caatinga. O clado é diagnosticado, e. g., por uma série de modificações estruturais do aparato mandibular faringiano, que está relacionado à produção de som exibida por machos durante o comportamento de corte. O som de corte de C. parnaibensis consiste de um único pulso denominado como thump (duração 0,031-0,133s; intervalos entre thumps 0,020-8,319s; frequência dominante 70,3-93,8 Hz). A nova espécie se distingue de todos os outros congêneres por uma combinação de 27-31 neuromastos em torno do olho, 29-33 neuromastos supraorbitais, 16-18 raios na nadadeira dorsal e 19 raios na nadadeira anal em machos, 28-31 raios na nadadeira caudal, 33-36 escamas na série longitudinal, 3+10 rastros branquiais no primeiro arco branquial, ausência de dentes no segundo faringobranquial, ausência de órgãos de contato nas escamas do flanco, 34-35 vértebras, ausência de dentes no vomer e presença de séries transversais de escamas na base da nadadeira anal.

This study records the first occurrence of Kryptolebias hermaphroditus Costa, 2011 in canals or perennial salty water pools in two mangroves of the Rio Grande do Norte state, in the estuaries of Ceará-Mirim River and Curimataú River. Due to its hermaphroditism and self-fertilization, a unique feature among vertebrates, this species is very important for many biological areas. Kryptolebias hermaphroditus depends on favorable conditions for their development, therefore, human impacts such as shrimp farming and removal of native vegetation from mangroves may affect populations of this species in northeastern Brazil.
