1. Engagement through boundary spanning : insights from US entrepreneurship educators

Abstract

This paper examines how the institutional role of entrepreneurship educators influences how they span boundaries and engage students and communities. We examine boundary-spanning behaviours based on four types of orientations among individuals involved in higher education - technical-practical, socio-emotional, community and organizational. We used survey data to identify how entrepreneurship educators at higher education institutions engaged stakeholders before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings suggest that the institutional role appears to correlate with boundary-spanning orientation. Faculty reported involvement in boundary-spanning and engagement activities, albeit to significantly lower degrees than other participants involved in entrepreneurship education and administration. This paper summarizes the results of university engagement and the roles that had emerged in entrepreneurship education just before the COVID-19 pandemic. We propose a model for 21st-century engagement and document entrepreneurship education roles evolving in concert with the needs of the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Abstract

A qualitative method was used to gather data from technology transfer officers (TTO) based on their responses related to commercialization decisions and determine if the common decision-making practices are shared among officers from different institutions. Though TTO plays a central role in the technology commercialization process, there found very less evidence to confirm that professional practice and standards were integrated into decision-making processes, hence warrants further research to examine a relationship to outcome success.

12. Advancing Medical Device and Biotech Innovations

Abstract

M2D2 is a UMass Lowell – UMass Medical School Worcester initiative that helps entrepreneurs move new medical device and biotech ideas from patent to production and offers early-stage inventors and established companies easy, affordable and coordinated access to world-class researchers and resources at both the Lowell and Worcester campuses. UMass Lowell and UMass Worcester extend use of engineering and scientific resources to M2D2 companies. These core resources are available to researchers by using the research services agreement. The use of UMass Lowell and UMass Worcester interns and faculty is an enormous benefit to an emerging medical device or biotech company. UMass Worcester’s campus offers access to core research supports and highly trained personnel to efficiently conduct animal or clinical studies across the life cycle of projects. UMass Lowell has two M2D2 facilities with private and shared wet lab space, equipment, office space and conference rooms. It offers business and medical feasibility assessments, product development, medical and clinical pathway assistance, SBIR and STTR research partnerships and access to capital. M2D2 was established with seed funding from the UMass President’s Office, the Mass Life Sciences Center and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Abstract

Entrepreneurs make countless pitches and presentations to prospective stakeholders that are critical to securing needed resources. Our study examines whether or not certain aspects of visual presentations are more likely to elicit stakeholder interest. By applying precepts of information visualization theory, we empirically examine 42 early-stage venture poster presentations to determine the impact design and content have on attracting stakeholder interest. Our findings suggest that visualization matters; posters that included specific visual devices garnered a higher level of interest among prospective stakeholders, including investors and collaborators. 28. Impact of Entrepreneurial Orientation on University Performance and Regional Economic Development.

Abstract

Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has been examined immensely through a growing stream of research in both entrepreneurship and strategic management literature. As a firm-level attribute, the beneficial relationship to firm performance has been established in the corporate sector leaving EO's implications in other sectors including university settings a rather underexplored area. Further, measurement of EO has been dominated by use of scales of initially proposed by Miller, warranting need for alternative method development. Our study adds to the body of literature that seeks to understand the dimensionality of EO and in contexts other than firms. We employ the use of content analysis of university president letters to measure university EO and establish its relationship to both commercialization of intellectual property and regional business development outcomes. The findings have significant managerial implications for higher education administrators as institutional adaptiveness, capacity of universities to generate new knowledge and facilitate spillovers that spur regional economic growth are true reflections of university entrepreneurialism.
