A Chinese television series called Heshang that promotes Westernization while criticizing nationalism and traditional Chinese culture is an example of the modernization changes and economic reform taking place in China. Heshang sends the message that tradition and modernity are incompatible. The series was aired through the CCTV, the Party's official propaganda, which may indicate a rift in the Party or a lessening of Party control over the media. The resulting Heshang phenomenon illustrates how marketization can assist in developing a public sphere or civil society.
