4. Increasing the Resistance of Steel and Austenitic Stainless Steels Against Pitting Corrosion by a γ-Irradiated Self-Assembled Amphiphilic Molecular Layer.

Abstract

This study, based on our previous research, aims to quantitatively determine the enhanced protection of austenitic stainless steels against pitting corrosion in NaCl solution by self-assembled molecular (SAM) layers, in their original form and after γ-irradiation. This study focuses on four stainless steels of varying compositions, covered by self-assembled undecenyl phosphonic acid layers. The metal dissolution in corrosion experiments was measured by a special, highly sensitive analytical technique using the inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The comparison of the dissolved metal ion concentrations measured in the presence of different metals with and without nanocoatings allowed the evaluation of the anticorrosion effectiveness of nanofilms as well as the importance of the alloying elements. The ICP-OES results demonstrated that the quality of layers have a significant impact on anticorrosion efficacy. The γ-irradiated self-assembled layers were the most effective in controlling the dissolution of stainless steels. The mechanisms of the inhibition in the presence of these nanolayers were elucidated by infrared spectroscopy. First of all, it revealed the differences in the adsorption of the undecenyl phosphonic acid self-assembled layer, both with and without γ-irradiation. The other important observation that confirmed the increased anticorrosion efficiency after γ-irradiation proved the formation of a more compact, polymer-like layer over the metal surface. The increased anticorrosion efficacy, defined as the enhancement in Pitting Resistance Equivalent Numbers (PRENs) in the presence of self-assembled layers (either pre- or post-γ-irradiation), can be documented. 17. Development of Effective Infrared Reflective Coatings.

Abstract

Featured Application: This infrared reflective coating could be applied to vehicles and buildings in order to save energy. The adsorption of surfaces exposed to sunlight results in increased temperatures that can cause physical damage and an increase in energy consumption. Infrared reflective coatings can keep objects cooler and have significant benefits in a wide variety of application by reflecting infrared light and decreasing heat, reducing operating costs, improving energy efficiency in buildings and vehicles, and extending an objects' lifespan. The main aim of our research was to develop coatings in a RAL7016 Anthracite grey color with minimum heat adsorption in the infrared wavelength range. This was achieved using a combination of infrared transparent and infrared reflective pigment built-in coatings applied on two primers: white and black. Infrared reflectivity or transparency, as well as surface temperature, was investigated as a function of the composition and concentration of pigments. These coatings were characterized by chromatic parameters, by total solar and infrared solar reflectance in the UV, visible, and infrared wavelength range, and by heat reflection. Among the coatings developed, two produced very effective controls for infrared reflectance and transparency, and they could control heat reflectance, resulting in a significant decrease in surface temperature. Abstract

Langmuir-Blodgett monomolecular layers of alkylhydroxamic acids and alkylphosphonic acids on copper and iron substrates are studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy. According to XPS results, the structures of the hydroaxmic acid and phosphonic acid Langmuir-Blodgett films are very similar.

Abstract

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans are two of the most important bioleaching mesophiles used in the extraction of metals from sulfidic ores. Key to the bioleaching process is the attachment of the bacteria onto the ores. This is done by means of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) found in the bacteria. An analysis of the chemical composition of the EPS revealed high concentrations of sugars and lipids. Nitrogen, phosphorus and free fatty acids were also found. Experiments also found an involvement of charge effects in the attachment mechanism.

Abstract

In this modern age, sensors are used in all aspects of life, whether to gather data in a laboratory, to control system in industrial process, to measure sugar or cholesterol levels in blood, car, and home alarm systems, or as huge as home-land security, sensors have become an essential in our private and general surroundings. An important part of the sensor system is the transducer, where a lot of innovations and improvement takes place in order to improve sensor output both quantitatively and qualitatively. Nanofilms and nanostructured materials can contribute largely to the processes of sensing, such as stability improvement, signal noise filtering, and most important in the transduction element. Functional nanofilms and micro- and nanostructured materials can achieve more functions in many applications that range far beyond sensing. In this chapter, sensors, transducers, and their applications are discussed. Preparations and characterization of the functional nanofilms and micro- and nanostructured materials are introduced in the framework of transduction. The significant roles of functional nanofilms in resolving matters and their advantages in applications both in liquid and gas phase sensors are demonstrated. This main part of the chapter covers the description of sensors, sensors types, transducers, transducing principles, preparations, and characterization methods of nanostructured materials, as well as applications of functional thin films and nanostructured materials in sensing.
