Telecom Italia S.p.A. is planning to reduce debt and expenses by eliminating an additional 4,000 jobs and selling as much as 3 billion euro in assets. Telecom Italia had already announced 5,000 job cuts in June. The company's debt stands at 35.77 billion euro as of September 30. Olivetti SpA is planning to split off its mobile telephone business from Telecom Italia SpA. The move is part of Olivetti's major restructuring of its telecommunications operations. The splitting off of the mobile phone business will make it easier for Olivetti to service its acquisition debts of 15 billion euros. The program switch terminates the company's previous plan to merge Telecom Italia into Tecnost SA, Olivetti's acquisition unit.

Gerhard Schroeder, the chancellor of Germany, stated his support for the proposed merger between Deutsche Telekom AG and Telecom Italia SpA. The proposed deal is valued at $76 billion.
