Abstract

All species of Odontoscelio Kieffer, 1905 are imaged, with keys provided to all known males and females in this genus. Two new species, O. agnieleae sp. nov. and O. spinosus sp. nov., are described from India. The generic concept of the genus Odontoscelio is discussed. The presence of axillular spines differentiates this genus from other teleasines such as Dvivarnus Rajmohana & Veenakumari, 2011, Gryonoides Dodd, 1920 and the Trimorus carus (Nixon, 1936) species group, which possess lateral mesoscutellar spines.

Abstract

Teleasinae are commonly collected scelionids that are the only known egg parasitoids of carabid beetles and therefore play a crucial role in shaping carabid populations in natural and agricultural ecosystems. We review the available host information of Teleasinae, report a new host record, and revise Gryonoides Dodd, 1920, a morphologically distinct teleasine genus. We review the generic concept of Gryonoides and provide diagnoses and descriptions of thirteen Gryonoides species and two varieties: G. glabriceps Dodd, 1920, G. pulchellus Dodd, 1920 (= G. doddi Ogloblin, 1967, syn. nov. and G. pulchricornis Ogloblin, 1967, syn. nov.), G. brasiliensis Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. flaviclavus Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. fuscoclavatus Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. garciai Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. mexicali Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. mirabilicornis Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. obtusus Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. paraguayensis Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. rugosus Masner & Mikó, sp. nov., G. uruguayensis Masner & Mikó, sp. nov. We treat Gryonoides scutellaris Dodd, 1920, as status uncertain. Gryonoides mirabilicornis Masner & Mikó, sp. nov. is the only known teleasine with tyloids on two consecutive flagellomeres, a well-known trait of Sparasionidae. An illustrated identification key to species of Gryonoides, a queryable semantic representation of species descriptions using PhenoScript, and a simple approach for making Darwin Core Archive files in taxonomic revisions accessible are provided.

Abstract

The Platygastroidea are a diverse group of mostly small to tiny wasps, the common biology for which is endoparasitism of insect and spider eggs. No analytically-based phylogeny exists for the superfamily, and the current suprageneric classification is flawed in part because of its reliance on homoplasious and pleisiomorphic morphological characters. To determine platygastroid relationships as a basis for investigating host and ovipositor evolution, phylogenies of > 70 in-group species (representing 55 genera) were reconstructed by parsimony and Bayesian methods using three molecular markers; the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I and the nuclear genes 28S and 18S rRNA. The results strongly support the monophyly of the superfamily and one of the two families, Platygastridae, but the Scelionidae are most likely polyphyletic. However, within the Scelionidae, there is a well supported ‘main scelionid clade’ that contains the majority of genera assigned to the family. At the subfamilial level, both putative subfamilies of Platygastridae, the Platygastrinae, and Sceliotrachelinae, are likely to be polyphyletic. Within the Scelionidae, both the Teleasinae and Telenominae are monophyletic, but the Scelioninae is clearly not so. The current tribal classification for the Scelionidae is in need of major reassessment because no tribes, with the exception of the Scelionini s.s., were found to be monophyletic. Further illustrating the problems associated with the current classification is the nonmonophyly of a number of genera, namely Opisthacantha Caloteleia, Telenomus, Trimorus, Teleas and Idris. Analysis of ovipositor evolution in the superfamily revealed that the Ceratobaeus-type ovipositor system is ancestral; however, this trait was lost prior to the evolution of the main scelionid clade, for which the Scelio-type ovipositor system is ancestral and defines a mostly paraphyletic assemblage. Ancestral state analysis indicates that the Ceratobaeus-type ovipositor was subsequently re-evolved in the main scelionid clade, representing a possible contradiction of Dollo’s law. Previously, the tribal placement has been used to predict the host associations of genera for which host data were unavailable. A new species of Gryonella Dodd, 1914, is described and illustrated based on specimens from Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul). Gryonella matogrossensis sp. nov. is similar to G. bruesi Dodd but can be distinguished mainly by its lighter color, rounded vertex, striated cheeks and large metanotal teeth. A key to the described species of Gryonella is provided. Taxonomic notes on the genus are included.

Seven new genera and six new species are described from America north of Mexico, viz. Aradoctonus armatus n. gen. and n. sp. (Telenominae, Telenomini), Embioctonus setiger n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Embidobiini), Epigryon audax n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Gryonini), Exon californicum n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Gryonini), Harringtonia n. gen. for Baryconus cinctus Harrington (Scelioninae, Psilanteridini), Mecix texana n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Psilanteridini), and Spiniteleia campbelli n. gen. and n. sp. (Scelioninae, Psilanteridini). Synoptic keys to families, subfamilies, tribes, genera and species, with notes on diagnostic characters and distribution arc included. Many genera are redefined and correctly placed and are recorded for the first time from India. Twenty plates of line drawings are included. No attempt is made to elucidate synonymies. This review should serve as the basis for future taxonomic revisions.

Abstract

The following new genera and species of Proctotrypidae were all collected in Canada by Mr. W. Hague Harrington, of Ottawa. Scorrioteleia, gen. nov. Abdomen with five visible segments; the last three segments long, slender, cylindrical, together as long as the second, and resembling the tenninal segments of a scorpion; the third segment is about as long as the fourth and fifth segments united, the fifth pointed. Front wings with the marginal vein shorter than the marginal cell, and scarcely twice as long as the first abscissa of radius, which is slightly oblique. Antennfae 15-jointed, filiform, the first joint of flagellum the longest, about half the length of the scape, the following joints to the last very gradually shortening, the penultimate joint being about twice as long as thick, the last joint oblong-oval, one-half longer than the preceding.

Abstract

New taxonomic information is given on the identities, generic classification, morphology, relationships, and geographic distribution of several hundred species of proctotrupoid wasps. The paper is based on a study of primary types of 270 species of Scelionidae, many secondary types, and other important material in 40 world museums and private collections with approximately 300,000 specimens of Proctotrupoidea having been examined. Many genera are redefined, and generic diagnoses completed or corrected. The tribal classification is reviewed; four new tribes are proposed in the subfamily Scelioninae, viz. Nixoniini, Sparasionini, Cremastobaeini, and Doddiellini.

Abstract

The importance of pleural characters in Scelionidae is discussed and assessed. Two new terms, peculiar to some Scelionidae, are proposed, viz. the netrion for a specialized area on sides of pronotum, and mesopleural carina for a diagonal keel on mesopleuron (mesepisternum). Netrion and mesopleural carina are considered important characters for higher classification of the Scelionidae. The proposed characters are reviewed in the suprageneric categories (tribes and subfamilies) of the Scelionidae. The tribe Tiphodytini n. stat. is reinstated and removed from the synonymy with Thoronini, partly on account of the pleural characters.
