Abstract

With modern vehicles evolving with more features, services, complex systems, with more sensors, actuators, and processing units, it is essential to think about vehicles not only as means of transportation that may tend towards full autonomy, but also as adaptive objects, that suit themselves to the needs of occupants. Vehicular services can be developed to support these adaptations. However, the increasing complexity of vehicular service development, even with current standardizations and best practices and guidelines, are insufficient to tackle the high complexity of development, with expectations of up to 1 (U.S.) billion lines of code for a fully (level 5) autonomous vehicle. Within this survey, the paradigm of Deterministic Software Defined Vehicles is explored towards increasing the quality and easiness of the development of services for automotive. Towards this, a proposed vision with four pillars is also provided: the deterministic network configurator, the data layer configurator, and the hypervisor configurator and the vehicle abstraction layer, all coordinated by a software orchestrator.

7. The New Brazilian Conservatism and Education: Mapping Its Lines of Force

Abstract

In the last decade, demands for greater order and the defense of traditional moral values have grown in Brazil within the scope of what authors have been calling the new Brazilian conservatism. Conservative and neoliberal leaders and religious groups stand out, acting on different fronts in politics and social relations, including education. Within this context, the article aims to map the different manifestations, actions and agents of the new Brazilian conservatism in the educational field through theoretical reflection and the construction of a conceptual map. First, we discuss different conservative currents, especially the new conservatism in the USA and its influences in Brazil. Based on Almeida (2017), we outline a conceptual map of the new conservatism in education, highlighting four lines of force: moral, economic, security-related and interactional. These lines are interconnected and are articulated according to the interests of their defenders. On the educational front, they propagate a technical, banking and authoritarian vision of education, emphasizing the role of the family and restricting teachers' work and students' autonomy. We conclude that these multiple lines of force lead to significant setbacks in the construction of plural educational proposals, affecting pedagogical practice, curricula and teacher education.

Abstract

This article presents the deployment and experimentation architecture of the Aveiro Tech City Living Lab (ATCLL) in Aveiro, Portugal. This platform comprises a large number of Internet-of-Things devices with communication, sensing and computing capabilities. The communication infrastructure, built on fiber and Millimeter-wave (mmWave) links, integrates a communication network with radio terminals (WiFi, ITS-G5, C-V2X, 5G and LoRa(WAN)), multiprotocol, spread throughout 44 connected points of access in the city. Additionally, public transportation has also been equipped with communication and sensing units. All these points combine and interconnect a set of sensors, such as mobility (Radars, Lidars, video cameras) and environmental sensors. Combining edge computing and cloud management to deploy the services and manage the platform, and a data platform to gather and process the data, the living lab supports a wide range of services and applications: IoT, intelligent transportation systems and assisted driving, environmental monitoring, emergency and safety, among others. This article describes the architecture, implementation and deployment to make the overall platform to work and integrate researchers and citizens. Moreover, it showcases some examples of the performance metrics achieved in the city infrastructure, the data that can be collected, visualized and used to build services and applications to the cities, and, finally, different use cases in the mobility and safety scenarios.

Abstract

Skin lesions are iceberg indicators of animal welfare. The study of the bruises in pig carcasses allows the inference of how and when a traumatic moment that resulted in the injury occurred, as well as its severity. A cross-sectional study to investigate the association between pre-slaughter factors and the type of skin lesions in cross-breed fattening domestic pigs was performed on 300 pigs slaughtered in a slaughterhouse in Northern Portugal. Data on the sex of the animals, animals’ origin, transport time and lairage time were collected. Skin lesions were evaluated according to location (region) on the carcass, shape, size, number of lesions per region and lesion age (colour). Descriptive, univariate and logistic regression analyses were performed (considering p≤0.01). A total of 468 injuries were recorded, distributed by different carcass regions. Most of these injuries occurred on the back (37.2%) and temporally close to slaughter (94.2%). Castrated males were more predisposed to present bruises probably related to fights between animals. Females and animals subjected to longer transport times were more likely to have skin lesion injuries resulting from poor handling. The study highlights the importance of regular monitoring of welfare indicators in a pre-slaughter context for more efficient surveillance of animal welfare.

Abstract

Healthful behaviours such as maintaining a balanced diet, being physically active and refraining from smoking have major impacts on the risk of developing cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other serious conditions. The burden of the so-called 'lifestyle diseases'-in personal suffering, premature mortality and public health costs-is considerable. Consequently, interventions designed to promote healthy behaviours are increasingly being studied, e.g., using psychobiological models of behavioural regulation and change. In this article, we explore the notion that psychedelic substances such as psilocybin could be used to assist in promoting positive lifestyle change conducive to good overall health. Psilocybin has a low toxicity, is non-addictive and has been shown to predict favourable changes in patients with depression, anxiety and other conditions marked by rigid behavioural patterns, including substance (mis)use. While it is still early days for modern psychedelic science, research is advancing fast and results are promising. Here we describe psychedelics' proposed mechanisms of action and research findings pertinent to health behaviour change science, hoping to generate discussion and new research hypotheses linking the two areas. Therapeutic models including psychedelic experiences and common behaviour change methods (e.g., Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Motivational Interviewing) are already being tested for addiction and eating disorders. We believe this research may soon be extended to help promote improved diet, exercise, nature exposure and also mindfulness or stress reduction practices, all of which can contribute to physical and psychological health and well-being.

In this manuscript we prove the Bernstein inequality and develop the theory of holonomic D-modules for rings of invariants of finite groups in characteristic zero, and for strongly F-regular finitely generated graded algebras with FFRT in prime characteristic. In each of these cases, the ring itself, its localizations, and its local cohomology modules are holonomic. We also show that holonomic D-modules, in this context, have finite length. Abstract

We study Merkle-DAGs as a transport and persistence layer for Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs), coining the term Merkle-CRDTs and providing an overview of the different concepts, properties, advantages and limitations involved. We show how Merkle-DAGs can act as logical clocks giving Merkle-CRDTs the potential to greatly simplify the design and implementation of convergent data types in systems with weak messaging layer guarantees and a very large number of replicas. Merkle-CRDTs can leverage highly scalable distributed technologies like DHTs and PubSub algorithms running underneath to take advantage of the security and de-duplication properties of content-addressing. 45. Competition and Diversification in Higher Education: Analysing Impacts on Access and Equity in the Case of Portugal

Abstract

In recent decades, higher education has experienced a massive expansion worldwide, which has often been linked to increasing higher education diversification. New sectors and new types of institutions emerged with this massification process to offer more diversified types of advanced training. At the same time, this expansion was often embedded in a political economy that increasingly favoured market forces, leading to growing privatisation and competition in the higher education sector. This article explores the relevance of institutional diversification and competition in higher education for access and equity in Portugal. The case of higher education in Portugal is particularly interesting since Portugal has a diverse system both in secondary education and in higher education, with significant vocational and private sectors at both levels (besides the more common academic and university tracks and public institutions). We analyse the profile of new cohorts of entrants by sector (public vs. private higher education institutions) and fields of study. Our results suggest that private secondary schools provide an advantageous track for accessing higher education, especially to prestigious programmes and institutions to which students compete to access. The analysis also indicates that socioeconomic background is a very relevant factor for access to higher education. Although students whose parents do not have a higher education degree may enrol in higher education, those whose parents have higher levels of educational attainment tend to enrol in more prestigious programmes and institutions, to which access is more competitive.
