Objective: To examine Black emerging adult women's (ages 18-29) intention to meet the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Participants: Black emerging adult women (BEAW; N = 100). Methods: A cross-sectional survey design. Results: Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that in Model 1, attitudes (p<0.0001) and subjective norms (p<0.05) were significant predictors of intentions to meet the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. In Model 2, attitudes (p=0.0001) and perceived behavioral control (p<0.0001) were revealed to be significant predictors of intentions. The change in R squared from Model 1 (R[superscript 2]=0.304) and Model 2 (R[superscript 2]=0.559), was 0.255 (F = 40.08, p<0.0001) with the addition of perceived behavioral control to the second model. Conclusion: The TPB may be a suitable framework to assess factors associated with fruit and vegetable intentions among BEAW. Interventions designed to increase fruit and vegetable intake in BEAW should prioritize modifying perceived behavioral control.

The ability to adapt to changing circumstances has strong survival value. Individuals with substance use disorders tend to get "stuck" over-responding to drug-reward signals and pursuing drugs despite negative consequences. A lack of flexibility may be tied to impairments in neurocognition, including learning, memory, and executive function. However, results are often mixed, potentially due to heterogeneity in factors such as mental health, personality traits, or prior adversity. This study aimed to identify which factors influence neurocognitive variations within the opioid use disorder (OUD) population. Based on prior literature, we hypothesized that individuals with OUD would show deficits (vs. controls) in one or more neurocognitive domains, and that these cognitive difficulties might be greater in individuals with other known contributors to impaired cognition. This pilot project included 32 individuals receiving medication for OUD and 15 non-substance using controls (NSC). Questionnaires assessed addiction and relapse risk factors, such as impulsiveness, social function, depressive symptoms, and childhood adversity. Neurocognitive performance was measured via the Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery (P-CNB), including tasks that probe attention, working memory, episodic memory, cognitive flexibility, and complex cognition, and was compared between the OUD and NSC groups. OUD participants (vs. NSCs) exhibited significantly lower performance on the conditional exclusion task (CET) (Accuracy: 1.11 vs. 2.38, p < 0.001) and the n-Back task (NBT) (F1 Scores: 83% vs. 95%, p < 0.001). Impulsiveness, social function, and depressive symptoms were highly inter-related; however, only higher impulsiveness (r = -.48, p = 0.006) and more social impairment (r = -.47, p = 0.007) significantly correlated with decreased CET (but not n-Back) performance. This pilot study suggests that working memory and cognitive flexibility are impaired in people with OUD and that impulsiveness and social function are key factors in cognitive flexibility impairments in people with OUD. Background: The burden of heart failure (HF) is unequally distributed among population groups. Few study authors have described social determinants of health (SDoH) enabling/impeding self-care. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between SDoH and self-care in patientswith HF.Methods: Using a convergent mixed-methods design, we assessed SDoH and self-care in 104 patients with HF using the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patients' Assets, Risks, and Experiences (PRAPARE) and the Self-Care of HF Index v7.2 with self-care maintenance, symptom perception, and self-care management scales. Multiple regression was used to assess the relationship between SDoH and self-care. One-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted in patients with poor (standardized score = 60, n = 17) or excellent (standardized score = 80, n = 20) self-care maintenance. Quantitative and qualitative results were integrated. Results: Participants were predominantlymale (57.7%), with amean age of 62.4 ± 11.6 years, with health insurance (91.4%) and some college education (62%). Half wereWhite (50%), many were married (43%), andmost reported adequate income (53%). The money and resources core domain of PRAPARE significantly predicted self-care maintenance (P = .019), and symptom perception (P = .049) trended significantly after adjusting for other PRAPARE core domains (personal characteristics, family and home, and social and emotional health) and comorbidity. Participants discussed social connectedness, health insurance coverage, individual upbringing, and personal experiences as facilitators of self-care behavior. Conclusion: Several SDoH influence HF self-care. Patient-specific interventions that address the broader effects of these factors may promote self-care in patients with HF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIV disproportionately affects populations experiencing incarceration. Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective approach to preventing HIV acquisition among populations at increased risk of acquiring HIV. Yet few, if any, efforts have been made to offer PrEP in correctional settings. Beginning in November 2019, the Rhode Island Department of Corrections (RIDOC) implemented a systemwide PrEP initiation program with linkage to PrEP care in the community upon reentry. Incarcerated individuals identified as being potentially at increased risk of HIV acquisition during standard clinical screenings and medical care were referred to a PrEP care provider for potential PrEP initiation. Of the 309 people who met with a PrEP care provider, 35% (n = 109; 88 men, 21 women) agreed to initiate PrEP while incarcerated. Clinical testing and evaluation were completed for 82% (n = 89; 69 men, 20 women) of those who agreed to initiate PrEP. Of those, 54% (n = 48; 29 men, 19 women) completed the necessary clinical evaluation to initiate PrEP, were determined to be appropriate candidates for PrEP use, and had the medication delivered to a RIDOC facility for initiation. Only 8 people (4 men, 4 women) were successfully linked to a PrEP care provider in the community after release. The RIDOC experience demonstrates notable levels of PrEP interest and moderate levels of PrEP uptake among this population. However, PrEP engagement in care after release and persistence in taking PrEP when in the community were relatively poor, indicating a need to better understand approaches to overcoming barriers to PrEP care in this unique setting. This study examined the association between sexual relationship power, intimate partner violence, and condom use among African American and Hispanic urban girls. In this sample of 56 sexually active girls, 50% did not use condoms consistently and therefore were at higher risk for acquiring HIV or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Teens who experienced more intimate partner violence had a significantly higher likelihood of inconsistent condom use and therefore a greater risk for HIV/STDs. Girls' sense of sexual control in their relationships was not directly associated with inconsistent condom use but was inversely related to verbal and emotional abuse. Interventions aimed at reducing HIV/STD risk for adolescent girls need to address patterns of dominance and control in adolescent relationships as well as multiple forms of partner violence. This suggests the need for multilevel intervention approaches that promote girls' agency and multiple ways to keep girls safe from perpetrators of partner abuse. (Contains 2 tables and 3 figures.)

Caregivers promote heart failure self-care, yet little is known about how relationship quality and dyad gender influences self-care. The purpose of this study was to evauluate the contribution of dyad gender and relationship quality on heart failure self-care. The study was a secondary analysis from a heart failure self-care intervention. Dyad gender was categorized by patient-caregiver gender as Male-Male (M + M), Female-Female (F + F), Female-Male (Fp + Mc), and Male-Female (Mp + Fc). The Self-Care of Heart Failure Index v.6.2 measured self-care. The Mutuality Scale assessed relationship quality. Univariate linear regression identified determinants of patient self-care maintenance and self-efficacy. The sample (n = 503) was 48% Mp + Fc, 27% F + F, 15% Fp + Mc, and 10% M + M. Better caregiver mutuality in M + M dyads was associated with lower self-care maintenance (b = −7.45, 95% CI [−13.80, −1.11]) and self-efficacy (b = −18.07, 95% CI [−29.11, −7.04]). Better patient mutuality was associated with higher self-efficacy for M + M dyads (b = 12.63, 95% CI [2.18, 23.09]). Mutuality and dyad gender appear important for self-care.
