3. Ring Laser Gyro: Noise Improves Performance

Abstract

We present a systematic formulation of the performance of a ring laser gyro (RLG) under the influence of a randomized sinusoidal dither. We develop the Fokker Planck equation of such a system and find its steady state solution that we use to find exact equations for the average output rate and its variance. The former determines the RLG's scale factor and the latter its angular random walk. We find a key parameter, called the residual lock-in rate, which affects both the scale factor and the random walk of the gyro. We show that when the noise amplitude is much larger than the residual lock-in rate the gyro rate output approaches that of an ideal gyro. However, this is at the expense of generating an angular random walk that is proportional to the residual lock-in rate. We present a formulation of the statistics of gyro output count and relate the average count and its standard deviation to gyro parameters. For example, we show that the angular random walk, in addition to being proportional to the residual lock-in rate, is also proportional to the inverse square root of the dither frequency., Comment: 22 pages, 2 pictures

4. Species Population Dynamics with Competition and Random Events

Abstract

Population dynamics of a competitive two-species system under the influence of random events are analyzed and expressions for the steady-state population mean, fluctuations, and cross-correlation of the two species are presented. It is shown that random events cause the population mean of each specie to make smooth transition from far above to far below of its growth rate threshold. At the same time, the population mean of the weaker specie never reaches the extinction point. It is also shown that, as a result of competition, the relative population fluctuations do not die out as the growth rates of both species are raised far above their respective thresholds. This behavior is most remarkable at the maximum competition point where the weaker specie's population statistics becomes completely chaotic regardless of how far its growth rate in raised., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Haemonchosis is one of the most important parasitic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract of small ruminants in different parts of Iran and worldwide. While the disease poses major economic problems in the livestock industry, there are many reports on parasites' resistance to benzimidazoles necessitating to study of the level of this drug resistance in pathogens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the drug resistance of Haemonchus contortus to benzimidazole using molecular method in sheep from the North region of Iran. In this study, the resistance to benzimidazole was investigated using the PCR-RFLP method in the nematode Haemonchus contortus from sheep slaughtered in the northern region of Iran (Gilan and Mazandaran provinces). The samples examined in this study were evaluated between April 2020 and September 2021 from a total of 2400 sheep by determining the age groups of <2 years, 2>4 years, and >4 years. Three hundred Haemonchus contortus nematodes were randomly selected and investigated by means of PCR-RFLP and using TaaI endonuclease enzyme (SNP) in the beta-tubulin gene, responsible for drug resistance of Haemonchus contortus to benzimidazole. Haemonchus contortus was found in 66.8% and 60.5% of sheep in Gilan and Mazandaran. The results of the study showed that the drug sensitivity rate was 24% (72/300), the drug resistance rate was 54% (162/300) and 22% (66/300) of the samples had both resistant and sensitive alleles. Presented data showed a high level of prevalence of drug resistance in the nematode Haemonchus contortus in sheep in the northern region of Iran, which requires special attention to control the development of this resistance and the epidemic of haemonchosis in ruminants. Methods: In this study, a novel peptide grafted derivative of chitosan (CPP-g- chitosan) is synthesized and its potential for oral delivery of proteins and peptides is evaluated. Drug-loaded nanoparticles were developed from this derivative using ionic gelation method with application of sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) as a cross-linking agent. Human insulin was used as the model protein drug and release kinetic was studied at gastrointestinal pH. Finally the developed nanoparticles were filled into very tiny enteric protective capsules and its effects on blood glucose level are evaluated in laboratory animals. Results: Presence of the positively charged cell-penetrating peptide moiety in the structure of chitosan polymer had slight inhibitory effects on the release of insulin from the nanoparticles in simulated gastric fluid (pH 1.2) comparing to native chitosan. The nanoparticles were positively charged in gastrointestinal pH with size ranging from 180 nm to 326 nm. The polypeptide grafted to chitosan is a novel analog of Penetratin, presenting both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic characteristics altering the release behavior of the nanoparticles and significantly increase the absorption of insulin into the rat epithelium comparing to nanoparticles from simple chitosan. In-vivo results in diabetic rat proved that this nanoparticulate system can significantly lower the blood glucose levels in diabetic rats and remain effective for a duration of 9–11 hours. Conclusion: The results indicate that nanoparticles developed from this new peptide conjugated derivative of chitosan are very promising for oral delivery of proteins and peptides. 41. Microbial Profile and Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern in Diabetic Patients with Mild, Moderate, and Severe Foot Infections in Tehran

Abstract

It is estimated that 10-25% of diabetic patients will encounter diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) during their lifetime. This study evaluated the microbiology of DFUs and determined the antibiotic resistance pattern of bacterial isolates based on the severity of wounds and infections in different grades of ulcer. The specimens were collected from115 diabetic foot infections (DFI) deep tissue by needle aspiration and biopsy. The aerobic and anaerobic cultures and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were carried out. The presence of resistance genes including metallo-beta-lactamases (MBL), extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), ermA, ermC, and mecA was also determined. A total of 222 microorganisms were isolated. The prevalence of poly-microbial infections was 69.6%. Bacterial isolates comprised 64.2% Gram-positive bacteria (GPB), 33.5% Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), and five isolates of anaerobic bacteria were also detected. The most prevalent GPB and GNB were Staphylococcus spp. (52.2%) and Escherichia coli (33.3%), respectively. The prevalence of poly-microbial infections and GNB was positively associated with increased grades of Wagner and IDSA classifications. Among Staphylococcus aureus isolates, resistance to clindamycin (73.5%), ciprofloxacin (70.6%), and erythromycin (70.6%) were noticeable. GNB was also highly resistant to cephalosporins and ciprofloxacin. ESBL genes were detected in approximately 40% of isolates of Enterobacteriaceae. The prevalence of ermA, ermC, and mecA genes in S. aureus isolates were 8.8%, 32.3%, and 14.7%, respectively. In conclusion, our data suggest that GPBs are the most common isolates from DFIs. Furthermore, with the development of wounds and infection, the prevalence of GNB in DFIs are increased.

49. Diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot infections: adopted IWGDF guidline

Abstract

Background: Diabetic foot infection is the most common complication of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) leading to amputation. The treatment requires special attention to disease conditions, proper diagnosis, appropriate sampling for cultures, careful selection of antibiotics, rapid determination of the patient’s need for surgical intervention, and wound care. Clearly a systematic approach or, if possible, an evidence-based approach by using clinical guidelines about diabetic foot infections will lead to better outcomes. In this regard, this article aims to adopt the IWGDF clinical practice guideline on DFU infection. Methods: In this study, the adoption of the international evidence-based clinical guidelines on the DFU infection was carried out using the ADAPTE methodology, which involved three stages of setup, adoption, and finalization. AGREE II tool was used to evaluate the quality of the selected clinical guideline. Results: The results of this adopted clinical guideline according to the national facilities and access to equipment are described with 26 recommendations along with related reasons for the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot ulcer infections. The recommendation categorized into six different categories including Classification/ Diagnosis, Osteomyelitis, Assessing severity, Microbiological considerations, Surgical treatment, Antimicrobial therapy. Conclusion: The mentioned recommendations in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot ulcer infections extracted based on the methodology of systematic review studies. Actually the opinion of experts have been prepared and adjusted according to the limitations, equipment and facilities in the country. But in general, there are some challenges in diabetic foot infections should be considered as well. So monitoring the treatment of infection, optimal duration of antibiotic treatment, optimal treatment of infection in low-income countries, time and type of imaging studies, selection of medical or surgical treatments and hospitalization conditions are some of these challenges. However the definition and practical clinical application for the concept of bacterial bioburden of the wound for wound healing, evaluating the cost-effectiveness of new technologies in improving treatment and appropriate interpretation of microbiological (genotypic) microbiological tests are important too.
