Using waste aggregate materials has a considerable influence on resource conservation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence and reliability of the application of tire-derived aggregate (TDA) in buckling restrained brace frames on seismic design factors as well as the overall system earthquake performance. The results suggest that such an application could be advantageous for improving seismic safety and enhancing the damping properties of the system., Die Verwendung von Abfallzuschlagstoffen kann einen erheblichen positiven Beitrag zur Ressourcenschonung liefern. Ziel dieser Studie ist es, den Einfluss und die Zuverlässigkeit des Einsatzes von aus Altreifen gewonnenen Zuschlägen in knickstabilisierten duktilen Rahmenstreben auf die seismische Beanspruchung und das allgemeine Erdbebenverhalten des Gesamtsystems zu untersuchen. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass eine solche Anwendung vorteilhaft sein könnte, um die seismische Sicherheit zu verbessern und die Dämpfungseigenschaften des Systems zu erhöhen.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to investigate dynamic properties of polypropylene fiber-reinforced concrete beams with lightweight expanded shale (ES) and tire-derived aggregates (TDA). The mixture design followed past experiences in combining ES and TDA to enhance toughness and energy absorption in flexural behavior. The new mixture also contained 2% fiber by volume to improve such properties further. Experiments included compressive testing on cylindrical specimens as well as flexural testing on rectangular specimens to verify mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced tire-derived lightweight aggregate concrete (FRTDLWAC) subject to static loading. The results of these experiments confirmed reduction of mechanical strength due to addition of TDA and improvements in flexural strength due to fiber reinforcement. The dynamic testing included non-destructive impact loads applied to flexural specimens using a standard Schmidt hammer. A high-speed camera recorded the response of the system at 200 frames per second to allow detailed observations and measurements. Interpretation of energy-based dynamic results revealed that TDA enhances energy absorption through damping in flexural behavior. Results also indicated that fiber reinforcement reduces the amount of absorbed dynamic energy, even though; it enhances the absorbed strain energy due to crack bridging effect.

This research addresses the need to extend the service life, reduce the life cycle cost, and improve the safety and reliability of bridge abutments, part of the nation’s critical transportation infrastructure. Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) abutments contribute to the constructability and economy of bridge infrastructure. The electrochemical properties of backfill materials influence the corrosion of embedded steel strips in MSE systems. The application of rotary kiln manufactured lightweight aggregates contributes to the sustainability of bridge abutments by addressing corrosion concerns, reducing structural loads and settlements, providing free drainage, and accelerating construction. This project investigates the properties and characteristics of expanded shale, clay, and slate aggregates compared with normal-weight aggregates concerning the corrosivity of steel reinforcement.
