The institutional repository (IR) can provide a system for digitizing print serials for online delivery and a way to archive and preserve serial content already available online. Organizing serial content in IRs varies based on the architecture of each repository. In this presentation, Kay Teel of the Metadata Department at Stanford University Libraries discussed different approaches IRs use to manage serial content. She gave examples illustrating the inconsistent treatment of serials in the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) and described a conceptual model for serials in the SDR to provide an improved user experience finding and accessing digital serial content. Serial catalogers are required to balance the economy of taking standard cataloging copy "as is" against local demands to catalog apart from the standard. Two serial catalogers discuss examples of cataloging-enhancement practices from the viewpoint of their respective institutions. They examine each in terms of the following: impetus; problem solved or oppurtunity realized; stakeholders affected; costs, documentation needs, and new problems entailed; and factors shaping decisions to make changes. Cataloging electronic serials (e-serials) provides discovery and access to valuable resources. With the rapid growth of e-serial publishing one method of managing the cataloging workload is through cooperative cataloging projects. The University of Washington Libraries participate in a number of cooperative cataloging projects through the Cooperative Online Serials Program and the Council on East Asian Libraries.
